The Departed is a masterpiece
It's good, very good but pretty damn FAR from a masterpiece Sir.
Nah low bar Scorsese. He's made a tonne better films. Just as long as you know what you love about it is a copy.
Nah it’s excellent but it’s far from a masterpiece. It’s like an 8/10. Scorsese’s made 3 gangster movies that are definitely better (Mean Streets, Goodfellas, & The Irishman)
The Departed is fantastic and even a "lesser" Scorsese film is better than 95% of the rest of the stuff out there.

The blu ray came out in February 2007. It’s so old that I purchased it on release day from Circuit City.

Thanks for the review. You inspired me to watch it last night since I recently picked it up and hadn’t seen it since the original blu came out. It was better than I remembered and looked great in 4k!
I have the Blu-ray and with my Panasonic 820 it up converts it and it looks great
For a Best Picture winner and one of the most iconic movies of that decade - they definitely should have gone back and rescanned the conformed OCN at 4K. I get using upsampled DI for effects shots that they don’t have the time nor funds to re-render, but I doubt that applies for most of this movie. It’s a good looking disc and leagues better than the old HD-DVD and BD, but should have been more.
Boston accent on point Jeff. Absolutely loved this film in its entirety. I remember watching the trailer for it as a middle schooler and eventually watching it. The DVD was just collecting dust on my dad's movie shelf and I watched the film on my own in one sitting.

As someone who grew up the Boston area also.. you def have this small accent that comes out rarely that my grandparents also had. It comes out in certain words and def from living around the northshore 🤣
That makes sense. I wasn’t living in Boston, I was in the suburbs around it and lived in The North Shore for 5 years or so

The Departed looks and sounds spectacular on 4k Ultra HD Steelbook 👌
Also the Blu-ray would be a 25GB Blu-ray because HD-DVD maxed out at 30GB, so in order to release on both formats they used single layer discs to much in 2006. Also like you say Blu-rays have come on a hell of a long way.

I bought the digital. It has Dolby Vision and was only $15. I luv growing my physical media collection but when it's an upscale I get a little pissed off.
Would not pay too much attention to that. It looks very good
Fine details and textures are notably improved in close-ups, revealing knit patterns on police uniforms and other costumes, while black levels and darker details also get a nice bump; the entrance of Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), for example, is famously bathed in shadow and his initial presence feels quite a bit more foreboding this time around. Nighttime scenes also look tight with good contrast balance and deeper blacks, none of which seem threated by crush, banding, or noise-related artifacts. The new HDR10 enhancement unsurprisingly deepens specific color values: blues overwhelmingly stand out on uniforms and the like (although certain skin tones do tend to look a bit orange in tandem) and the overall range between its darkest values and brightest whites should look quite striking, at least depending on the capabilities of your display's local dimming capabilities. But overwhelmingly, this is top-notch work from WB. and the disc itself, all three layers of it, is nicely encoded and gives this 151- minute film plenty of room to breathe with a supportive bit rate. Simply put, die-hard fans should find this to be quite the satisfying upgrade indeed.
@@ps5andstuffhere Wow, that does sound incredible. But, it's a first, at least as far as my upscales are concerned. I do have a great setup and my upscales do look better for that reason only. I know that it's most likely the best these movies have looked at this point so maybe it's psychological for me. I'm also hoping that there's future releases for some of them.

I was hoping for a dolby true HD track. Its the only one I feel i dont need to mess with my audio levels to get everything to sound just right.
But is the movie good? Worth buying for someone thats never seen it?

Cause saying 2K is pretty general.

I've mixed feelings about upmixing original soundtracks to fit modern setups. Sometimes it's better to hear it the way it was intended.
One of the best trilogies made in HK.
The last DVD 📀 I ever rented in January 2007 . Great ❤movie. The best of the 2000s . Why didn’t you review the 4k steelbook rather than a 2k upscale?!? Would have made more sense.
I already have a DTS HD master audio blu ray, (Ireland) was it just in the US as True HD
Hello fellow Irish person. It was according to DVDcompare LPCM 5.1 uncompressed audio in the US, TrueHD in some other territories and DTS HD Master Audio in UK/IE.
Sad that Scorsese wins his Director Oscar for a remake; Mystic River and Friends of Eddie Coyle are better Boston crime films.
I get getting the title wrong, but the origins of the source, sheesh. Hong Kong fam! The way you said it sounded like "fuck it, some Asian country" I know you didn't mean it that way but that's the way your tone sounded.

Infernall Affairs is so much better. I love Scorsese but this is bloated and the best bits they just copied from the original. Infernal Affairs is a really right crime thriller. Everyone who likes Departed should give it a go.
Of course it takes from the original, it's a remake! A fantastic one at that. It's so grating seeing smug dorks belittle it as if it was some subpar movie like the Oldboy remake. Or something really egregious like the dreadful Hunger Games ripping off Battle Royale.

The Departed is a fun movie, but I think The Town might be a better movie.
I think it's Nicholson's performance that keeps it from achieving greatness. He seems to be acting in a different movie than everyone else. Harvey Keitel would've been a better fit in my opinion.

I never thought about it before but yes, I think you make a good observation and JN does seem to have been a miscast here. He just didn’t scream “Irish mob boss” to me in this movie.

The Town is mediocre at best and was so disappointed with it in theaters. To compare it to The Departed (or Heat which it definitely took inspiration from) is like comparing some old McDonald's burger to a filet mignon. Absolutely no comparison.
Yikes...only a 5.1 audio mix AND 2K upscaled picture? That's disappointing. I'll wait for an anniversary edition or possible Criterion version. So thanks for the heads up, Jeff!

I already own the Blu-Ray, but this is an easy pick up for me. The movie is too good to pass up, it’s Scorsese. Besides, I blow my money on 80s and 90s comedy movies that get upgraded to 4k. I recently picked up Major League and I think next week American Pie comes out, I’ll buy that as well. Easy buy.

I’m probably in regardless. I tried watching my dvd copy and just couldn’t. I made it all of ten minutes before searching for a digital stream.
Tired of Boston complaining about their accents.
Off course there is an original film cell… it was shot on film… and if warner wasnt so lazy they would have produced a new DI in 4k after making a new scan… as is common practice these days and should be… but since i dont like the movie i wont get it anyway… so fine by me… but they still should have done it the right way…
Shot on film but completed digitally. They don’t have a film source. They have a digital source. They’d have to go back and do an entirely new cut of the film from the original negatives. That’s a crazy ask

Infernal Affairs is great but to dismiss The Departed like that is ridiculous. It's a fantastic remake and it's like only smug hipsters knock it down as if they're trying to belittle others in an arrogant manner.
It's not like Departed is on the level of Oldboy or some actual crummy western remake. Asinine.

I don’t quite understand why some people made a fuss about the Hong Kong/Chinese distinction. I mean I understand the crucial distinction between Chinese and Japanese. It seems that some people just want to politicalize this for no good reason. For those who watched the movie trilogy “Infernal Affairs”, or at least have read the Wikipedia, they would understand one important theme/background of this movie is about the “reunification with Mainland China”.
