I was an extra in this movie. I’m in The subway scene when leo is talking to Martin sheen on the phone. I sat across from Leo. I worked as a dispatcher for the Boston Police at the time. We were all allowed to be in the movie. Martin Scorsese is an amazing director and a very nice guy. Once in a lifetime opportunity. That scene btw, took 8 hours to film
@Danny Dolan No, we were told not to say anything to him or anyone else. he only showed up when the cameras were 30 seconds from rolling then he would leave. his stand in did all the rehearsals
Few movie deaths are as upsetting as Bill Costigan’s in “The Departed.” Bill went through so much in this story. He was so brave and sacrificed so much for the good of others. We desperately want him to be safe and finally be able to rest (throughout the movie, Bill talks about how tired he is). And we want others to recognize him as a hero. So to see him killed in such an abrupt and unceremonious way provokes not just sadness but a bitter feeling of injustice. At his funeral, Bill is finally honored as a hero. As for his tiredness, I don’t think it’s an accident that we hear the priest say, “Eternal rest, grant unto him, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”
Wahlberg's character in this movie is one of my favorites. He's crass but 100% honest to Leo when they first meet. Probably the only one in the entire movie that was honest.
"Would you like to be a cop or appear to be a cop?" Me: "Appear sir, 100%. I want the fame, the uniform, good pay and lots of pussy. Thats me sir. One day I'll make commissioner and even politician."
Mark Wahlberg had said in an interview once that this film was one of the most enjoyable ones he got to be a part of. And I agree with him on this. The talent in this cast is truly amazing.
I truly miss seeing Jack Nicholson. It sucks that him and Gene Hackman retired from acting. They are still two of absolute best actors to ever grace the silver screen.
I think the best part of the ending is that you think Sullivan has gotten away with everything until Dignam just shows up when you least expect it. Leo’s death will forever be one of the most shocking deaths in any movie too, just comes out of nowhere
I think that even with Sullivan "getting away with it," he probably doesn't have much meaning left in his life. Costello is gone as well as his relationship and what he thinks is his child. He probably doesn't have any actual family left either, having been raised by his Grandmother. To me, Sullivan even looks a bit relieved when he sees Dignam(Diglet), knowing that he won't have to continue living a lie. Sullivan probably figured that Dignam knew the truth, and that it was only a matter of time. Maybe Dignam didn't care that much about Costigan, but he would never forgive for what happened to Queenan.
The ending is 100% satisfying for me. After Billy's surprising death, it was so shocking to see Sullivan won. But when Dignam killed Sullivan, its a reminder that just as injustice can take hold, retribution can too. Also, if you pay attention to what Dignam says to Billy, nearly everything comes true. Like, yeah in the end, Dignam was the only friend Billy had inside the State Troopers after Queenan's death.
Only until you realize that it kind of defeats the whole purpose of the movie that it’s adapting. Not to mention leaving several plot holes left unsolved.
Not all endings are made to be happy. Sometimes, what matters is an incredible story along the way. The way you two went through this, the emotional rollercoaster, is the whole point and it's why I enjoy watching reaction videos. If I don't see anything new I want to see, watching someone experience an incredible movie is almost as good as seeing it for the first time. Plus I always wanted someone to talk to about these movies when I watch them, so it's fun to hear what you guys have to say.
Idk I think Sullivan dying in the end and Dignam (as vulgar as he was, was still a good cop) getting his revenge is a happy enough ending to me. I’m sure the media would figure out & expose what happened after they found Sullivans body too…a lot of people died though holy fuck
@@nooneofconsequence1251 Ya. The original had no Wahlberg character, whose only job was to just be brash and get revenge. American audiences are children and can't handle a realistic ending where the good guys lose.
The envelop from Costigan (Leo) that he gave Madolyn told her to contact Dingam (Whalberg) basically and that he would know what to do. That's what was in his final envelop. Because Costigan trusted Dingam even if he was an a hole, he was the only one left he truly trusted. And yes she was pregnant with Costigan's baby most likely :(
But what was the point of trying to bring him to the rooftop? And if he did come to the rooftop to arrest Colin but later got killed by Trooper Barrigan, then the envelope is meaningless.
@@osmanyousif7849 then he wouldn't have her send the envelop. She was only to send it if she didn't hear from Costigan in 2 weeks or he wound up dead. He tells Madolyn if something happens to him to send it. But he was still going to try and catch Colin himself of course. Dingam was just a back up plan. Because if Dingam gets involved its outside of the law pretty much since he's put on leave. But Costigan also doesn't want them getting away. It was just an insurance plan to track down his murderer and take care of the rat after his own death
@@CrazeeAdam Exactly. The attention to detail in this movie is second to none. If you miss even ONE line of dialog, you'll be a little lost. There are no wasted, time filler scenes in this movie.
@@CrazeeAdam , No... you're missing the point. My point was that I found Billy's plan to try and take down Colin just absurd. I mean, ask yourself this: You're an undercover cop who's been hunting down a mole for quite some time, causing you to suffer a lot of stress and trouble, BUT SUDDENLY, you're given a bountiful amount of clues or evidence to learn and proof the mole was right in front of you. Now do you: Option A - Immediately take said evidence to the police station so the mole can be outed as the traitor (maybe even playing a recording of them confessing their crimes to further humiliated them), and will be arrested. Option B - DON'T DO THAT. And do the dumbest things ever like.... 1. Leave a trail that tips the mole off that you know they're the mole. 2. Tell the mole to meet you at a rooftop, despite it risking the mole getting the upper hand on you. 3. Don't call for the whole cavalry to meet you there, let alone the people who can actually back you up. 4. Don't bring any of your evidence with you, LITERALLY. 5. Say you're gonna march him to the PD, despite not doing any of the 4 things I listed. Not to sound like a downer, but Billy's actions in the movie just makes him look like an idiot. Now you can argue that credit should be given due to the fact that The Departed did something better that Infernal Affairs (which it was adapting from) didn't, which was have Billy let someone know what could happen to him if Colin killed him. As in Infernal Affairs (SPOILERS), while Billy's counterpart Chan does call the police to let them know that he has the mole in custody, he doesn't actually give them a name, nor does he let someone know that in case s**t goes wrong, and he's killed, to let that person go and reveal what actually happened. But this is still frustrating, as The Departed does a poor job at showing the passage of time (which I'll explain that problem later...), so I was left to believed that all of the events happened the very next day. And here's where the problem lies. EVEN IF we the audience didn't know yet to what was in the envelope Billy gave to Madolyn, and we would assume he was gonna take down Colin at the rooftop, WHY couldn't Billy bring Dignam himself instead of having someone else do the job? The movie never give an explanation to why Billy doesn't, UNTIL AFTER. But what's the reason for not doing it BEFORE? Billy could have just called Dignam or go to his house, show him said-evidence he's got on Colin proving he's the mole. Even if Dignam resigned (Which is where the the movie's passage of time becomes a problem, as I couldn't tell if it's been two weeks that Dignam had finally resigned to put his papers in), Billy should have just located the dude, show the tapes and this mess would have never happened. And WHY didn't Trooper Brown bring Dignam? Did he try to find him and couldn't, or did Brown just say, "F**k it!" and came alone? And then comes the reveal that there was another mole, who happens to be Trooper Barrigan. Now I have my issues with this reveal somewhere else with why Barrigan being a mole makes no sense. But putting them aside, let's just say Dignam did meet with Brown, Billy and Colin on the roof, but they all got killed (except Colin) by Barrigan? That would mean Madolyn would have the envelope saying to contact Dignam, BUT HE'D BE ALREADY DEAD, therefore she'd have nobody to go to, so they'll know what actually happened. Now you can argue here that this was why Billy gave her the envelope, in case he was killed before he met Colin on the roof, but as I mentioned earlier, the movie's the passage of time is executed poorly here, again. So how can you tell how much time has passed between Billy giving Madolyn the envelope and then the package with one of the tapes to Colin arriving? I'm certain there would be no reason for Billy to wait, so it shouldn't be very long. I'd even assumed that the sequence of Billy doing what he did happened the very next day. Also, Colin doesn't even know about the tapes UNTIL Billy sends him one, so WHY would Billy even be in fear for his life? And why would Colin risk killing Billy as he thinks he's someone who has nothing on him to prove he's the mole or a record of being a cop? And yeah, so Dignam kills Colin so semi-happy ending, RIGHT? But what happened to "the boxes of tapes" Billy had? Are they at his or Dignam's place? Did police find them when Billy died? Did Colin locate Billy's home, break in, and destroyed them? Will Colin even be outed as the mole? Well, the movie doesn't answer these plot-holes, so what's the point? If the movie doesn't care how can anyone?
The ending of this movie, to me, is what makes people remember it. It was such a shock, and you just don't know how to feel about it. But you definitely feel SOME kind of way, and it sticks with you for a long time.
Everyone was talking about the head shots and then the badass ending. I’m not a Wahlberg fan but that’s his shining moment. But really it’s Nicholson’s acting and Leo’s that takes this movie to the high level it’s at, and obviously Scorsese brings it out of them.
"I'm the guy who does his job; you must be the other guy." Dialogues in this movie are just pure gold. It's one of the most re-watchable 2 and 1/2 hour movies ever made. Also, this was the film where Martin Scorsese finally won the Oscar for Best Director. He had been nominated, lost five times before and got it on his sixth nomination. His previous nominations were for "Raging Bull", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Goodfellas", "Gangs of New York" and "The Aviator". He has been nominated three more times for "Hugo", "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "The Irishman". All of them are great films.
I LOVE this movie and this reaction was PERFECT!! All the gasps and shock faces were excellent and I couldn’t stop laughing at Cassie calling Dignam, Diglet
Black Mass is a really good movie. Just my opinion, I know some disagree. I think that would be the logical next movie after this. Hope they get to it sometime. Johnny Depp was great in that
Costello’s character is for sure based on Whitey Bulger, but only to Americanize the mob boss from the original movie this movie is a remake of. Which is the Chinese film Infernal Affairs (2002).
Not realising they’ve done exactly the same as him and had multiple “rats” in operation. Costello also had the other guy, the one that offs Bill, as well as Sullivan.
I suppose the satisfaction is that in the end, Colin met retribution. Dignam, despite being insufferable, had a clear moral compass. I can't wait for a Gangs of New York reaction!
Dignam was suspicious of Sullivan and didn't trust him. Considering that he got Queenan killed. So he knew that he would have to give up his badge to get rid of Sullivan.
It’s nice to see after taking the movie in, is Dignam was really testing Bill, (when he knocks the coffee out of his hands) because he had to really know to trust him, that he hadn’t turned or lost sight.c like an older brother and Queenan the father in that scene. Just nice to know after the hard time he gave him, in the end he really cared about him, those 3 were like a little family.
My daughter (13) is a HUGE Leonardo fan cuz of Titanic. Poor kid made the mistake of walking in the living room right as the elevator doors opened a few years ago. This is one reaction I KNOW she won't be watching.😂😂😂
@@Wurzelknecht No idea how many Bean's died in, but Leo does die a freaking lot lol. He had a streak there where it was a foregone conclusion. I remember my oldest niece was scared to even watch his movies.
@@Zack_410not yet. But whenever I watch a DiCaprio movie, I'm 95% prepared for it not ending well for him. I'm still surprised he survived Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
"Is this why she's a therapist, because she's addicted to broken men?" That may be the single best line I've ever heard from any reactor. Bravo, Carly! You were on your game, girl! You even knew immediately that Dellahunt was undercover when he told Bill about the wrong address! (Cassie, you're great, too! You caught the baby is Bill's. Colin is impotent, sometimes, possibly gay. And your editing was superb!)
The observations made during their reactions are so great cause it just feels like they're just so into it lol. I literally had to pause during the elevator scene cause I needed to be ready to see their looks of horror when Costigan gets shot. I knew they were gonna freak
I'm pretty sure Dellahunt wasn't undercover. He just liked Leo's character and didn't wanna give him up without being sure about it before hand but he didn't live long enough to and was a little preoccupied with dying to do it. He probably didn't want the last thing he was going to do be killing Leo's character either. When Nicholson said the news was lying about him being an informant he was correct and for the correct reason as well.
@@parker469a Wow, good call! I just read an article about the original "death-bed" scene between Delahunt (one L, it turns out) & Bill being longer & leaving no doubt that the former is NOT an undercover cop but Scorsese cut it to make it more ambiguous. Well done!
As Jack Nicholson pulled the severed hand out of the bag, I got an ad for Cholula hot sauce. It was both the funniest and most disturbing thing I've ever seen. 😂
There is a reason why Romeo and Juliet is consider one of the best plays of all time. Tragedy with characters we come to understand and love can be so emotionally powerful. It can effect us deeply and as seen in video just shake us up to the core especially when don't see it coming. This is what separates those traditional action movies where good guys always win vs a drama/thriller.
Love catch me if you can, but the aviator is a bit tough in some parts. I like the fact it was based on real events but its awful long for what it is in my opinion. I respect it, but its no where near my favorite Decaprio movies.
The dinner scene when he pulls the gun on Leo and you see that horrified look on his face was supposedly genuine lol. I believe that shocked look from Leo is because there wasn't a gun in the script and Jack was messing with him
@@PopcornInBed Seriously Cassie, you and Carly are a phenomenal team. Seeing you two in every reaction video is a pleasure always. Please keep giving us great reactions.
My first, and still one of my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio roles is Arnie in _What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)._ That guy acted the heck out of that role! I remember wondering if they possibly got an actor with that character's condition to play him, and even if he was not quite that far, how they could have even directed him, how much of his lines were fortunate ad libs, etc. Tremendous talent!
I have never seen Cassie and CArly so shaken from a series of events in a movie. -------- Which includes "Silence of the Lambs" and "The Shining" The Departed did really good at shaking Cassie and Carly to their core. Such a great great great reaction. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED it.
I think that a happy ending would have been far less satisfying than the one we are given: this whole story is set up as a tragedy, with the inevitability of some sort of disaster clear from fairly early on - a happy ending would have felt like cheating. Yes, the great majority of the important characters die (hence the title); and to me that just makes the movie feel very reminiscent of Shakespeare's tragedies.
@@tsogobauggi8721 Also true; and of course, the original Hong Kong movie was the first of a trilogy. But The Departed puts a distinctive American spin on the story by conspicuously basing Frank Costello on the real Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, who controlled the criminal underworld of the city for many years.
Cassie, I love your faulty memory for names. No matter how many times it's said in the film you manage to come up with a different variation. Very endearing and makes me laugh.
There was a time when Jack Nicholson didn't always play lunatics. I think it started with "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and was cemented with "The Shining." You need to see him in "Chinatown."
Jack is definitely best known for his villainous roles, but he has played some more likeable characters, even later on in his career. (in Mars Attacks! and in As Good As It Gets, for example)
You two are great! The best part about this reaction is even with all the times you call characters the wrong name, you both know who the other one is talking about! It's that sister connection coming in clutch!
"Diglet" 😂😂 You both are adorable. First time I saw this movie in theaters and the elevator scene came on at the end, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor and you could hear a pin drop. Gut-punching twist.
I enjoyed this movie. Kind of "in my backyard" style. South Boston, Boston, etc. Grew up just east of there. As a local, all these things make sense. Costello was supposed to be "Whitey Bulger", crime boss from the 70's to early 90's when he disappeared because the Feds were looking to take him down. They did finally in 2011. You noticed the XXX's that got shown before someone was going to die, right? A Martin Scorsese trademark.
Cassie is so precious. She is always wanting a good resolution. In the words of Cassie, "I DON"T WANT THIS!!!!!" Ahhh Cassie, movie goers love a bitter-sweet ending.
I saw it in the theater, I didn't see any meltdowns, lol. A little gasp but give me a break. I guess if all a person knows is dopey franchise crap mixed with a few horror movies here and there (which are basically formula movies), I can see why "The Departed" would seem "wild" but jeez, this is so second-rate Scorsese (and Nicholson, for that matter). Wait till you see the great Nicholson movies, dude, and the great Scorsese movies, jesus christ. There are like two reactions for "King Of Comedy", there is ONE for "Cape Fear", there are two for "After Hours".....I think there are three for "Raging Bull". And ten million for the sloppy "Departed", lol. (A lot for "Taxi Driver", which is good, although you have to wonder about all the people who love that movie so much, lol.)
@@tsogobauggi8721 LOL. Hilarious watching people go crazy over Scorsese's worst mob movie, something he practically sleptwalk through. Couldn't even be bothered to get a new soundtrack, recycling "Gimme Shelter" from "Casino" (not to mention the movie "Gimme Shelter"! lol)
You guys are too funny, you actually said is everyone ok with everyone dying in the movie 🎥 you guys do know the title of the movie is literally called The departed 😮😊
@@TJMiton I disagree. The ending, while tragic, was still satisfactory, especially when Damon's character comes home and finds Wahlberg standing in his living room wearing cleaner's shoes.
@@iamjamesmix Infernal affairs tells the story better, but the acting is aimed at an eastern audience. That's why some scenes feel really awkward. I still have Infernal Affairs on DVD 🤣✌️
A Martin Scorsese Masterpiece. In the "I smell a rat" scene, Jack Nicholson went completely off script. According to Leo DiCaprio, Nicholson must have taken a gun from the props department because the scene didn't call for one. Leo said his acting turned into genuine fear, especially when Jack pulled out the gun.
If you like this movie you should check out “infernal affairs’ from Hong Kong that this movie was based of,Martin Scorsese is so in love with the original movie that he bought the rights & remake it western styles.
Hey CAssie for many moviegoers, The unresolved ending I think takes the movie to even higher heights. Life often goes like that but studios are often afraid to go there for fear of losing that precious cinema audience score. It created a way more compelling ending. Especially for a big-budget movie like this. Give the people, not the executives what they want. More risk-taking like, "The Departed"
Scorsese made this more unresolved because it's a remake of Infernal Affairs. Scorsese wanted to tell the same story in a Boston-like way which Boston is always unresolved because that's just it's history. Infernal Affairs still remains the better film in my opinion but Scorsese definitely made it in HIS style and I enjoy both films.
You ladies are absolutely fantastic lol. As far as the ending, that's just how it goes sometimes. Redemption isn't always guaranteed in this life and we need to be reminded of that.
I was seriously shocked at Billy’s death, but the redeeming quality, for me, was Sullivan not getting away with it at the end of the movie. I believe Sullivan thought he was in the clear, but I would have been very frustrated, with the movie, if he had. So him getting killed by the unexpected source, in Dingham, gave me closure. Not the perfect ending but certainly different and unexpected!
The ending is VERY satisfying. To see Sullivan finally get his comeuppance (especially after the shock of thinking he gets away with it) is what makes it good.
Ahahahahaha 38:45 😂😂😂 oh man that's the minute your heart broke! Ahahahahahaha 😂I almost didn't get to feed because she kept saying Diglet 😒 how do you confuse Marky Mark with a goddamn Pokémon?!
Recommendations: The Hitcher (1986) - a fantastic thriller; Dark City (1998) - one of the best dystopian sci-fi; Gattaca (1997) - also a fantastic futuristic utopia/dystopia; High Fidelity (2000) - Cassie, you'd love it; A Bronx Tale (1993) - a kind of coming of age story directed by De Niro; They Live (1988) - a low-budget dystopia masterpiece from John Carpenter. Edit: In relation to De Niro an another great but perhaps forgotten film which adds more color to the above list; Ronin (1998) - whoever saw it knows how great it is. :)
Cassie, "We deal in deception. We don't deal in self-deception." GODDAMN what a wake-up call. That felt like a splash of cold water first thing outta bed. Such killer lines in this flick for sure.
OMG and you watched this with Carly...lol! Now you are going to have to have her along when you watch "The Revnant" too!! get a whole Leo D series going. P.S. you should watch "The Aviator" also if you haven't already seen it.
The pacing of this movie is nuts. The way it quickly cuts added to a feel that when it came out made it feel very modern. It holds up well in that regard in that it still feels different whenever I watch. I like when Scorcese is flashy and this and Casino are my favorite movies of his
Some stories give meaning and purpose, and some stories question meaning and purpose. Some stories are like a whodunnit, where the point is to capture the criminal and trill us with the roller coaster ride of how they did it. Stories like this give us the roller coaster ride of a thriller, but it's not about the criminal or the cop and justice getting served, rather it's about the complications of life/relationships/society/justice. To wrap that up in a happily ever after ending, would belittle the big questions asked. Great reactions btw, one of the best reactions channels. And you two together is double the awesomeness! 💯
@@osmanyousif7849 Agree but both films have their own taste even if it comes from the same source. I enjoy them both in their own right. But yeah, Infernal Affairs is better hands down.

This is such a well put together movie, with a brilliant cast. I wish we could get quality like this ALL the time. While I hated seeing Leo and Martin checking out, seeming Mark show up and get Matt felt really good at the end.
One of the best reactions on this channel! Loved it! I cracked up when Nicholson smashes Leo’s arm and both Cassie and Carly scream and dive off-screen! 😂😂😂
It took me a second watch to pull it all together too. She's having Leo's character's baby though so that's all the redemption we can get. That and Walberg's character is still alive doing his vigilante justice.
"The Departed" was an American remake/reimagining of the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs," which IMHO, is the superior version. For example, the pivotal elevator scene? I thought IA's version was far more suspenseful/dramatic/shocking than The Departed's.
Just sitting down to watch this. Very cool you mentioned Blood Diamond in Leo DiCaprios body of work, Cassie. It's a great, difficult movie that's always been one of my favs.
Eh, I don’t think it’s the best. I think the Academy just gave him the award just to act all sympathetic for screwing him over for Raging Bull and Goodfellas.
Amen! Though, you may even be underselling just how great this movie was/is! It's imo not only Scorsese's best crime film, it's in a three-way tie with "Heat" and "The Godfather: Part 2" for being the number 1 greatest crime film ever made, regardless of director.
@@osmanyousif7849 The only other 2007 film that could have won Best Picture was Letters from Iwo Jima. Babel, the Queen, and Little Miss Sunshine where also nominated. Babel was okay as was the Queen but no one goes back to rewatch those. Sunshine was a tragic comedy and those never win best picture. I think only two comedies ever, actually, have won the best picture. So it was a softer year. The Departed actually didn't do great at the box office even with all that star power. I think it was confusing for the average person. But it gets better every re-watch.
This is a ending you talk about for years. I watched a interview short with Tarantino where he talks about having people leave the theater and making a continuation in their own heads instead of being spoon fed every detail. Like every one is still wondering what was in the briefcase in pulp fiction.
One of the most intense visits to the cinema I've ever had. This film is beyond awesome. It just locks you in and the way Scorsese keeps the momentum and tension rolling for the whole film so unbelievably good. I still give the nod to Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, as my best Scorses films, but The Departed is top tier as well and so hard to top.

Not sure if you are into foreign language movies, but it would have been good if you also watched the original Hong Kong film this movie was based on. Martin Scorese basically did a Hollywood remake of the Hong Kong movie "Infernal Affairs" starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung and won an Oscar for it. It was basically the same with plot characters and all, but something is lost in the translation.
If Leo is the greatest actor of our time, Jack Nicholson is the greatest of his. Plus, Jack actually has several Love stories that I know you both of you would love. Something’s Gotta Give and As Good As It Gets are two of the most recent.

It just goes to show and remind how quickly a person's life can really be taken. I was more than satisfied with the ending because it was abrupt and disturbing. You are only the main character in your own story. The good guy doesn't always win in a traditional sense etc.

Of course I felt he would get typecast after Titanic and was even more impressed by the roles he took afterwards when he could have probably done rom coms for the next few decades, but instead played some difficult roles and really should have 4-5 best actor Oscars if the academy was honest with themselves, but the director of this film won his first Oscar for it and also, Martin Scorsese, should have 3 minimum.
I know that Scorsese gets a lot of credit for this movie but it's a remake so I feel like the credit should belong to the original makers and not Scorsese.

Wahlberg's character in this movie is one of my favorites. He's crass but 100% honest to Leo when they first meet. Probably the only one in the entire movie that was honest.
what about queenan?
100%
"Would you like to be a cop or appear to be a cop?"
Me: "Appear sir, 100%. I want the fame, the uniform, good pay and lots of pussy. Thats me sir. One day I'll make commissioner and even politician."
His theory on feds IS to treat them like mushrooms. So...She also calls Diggler Diglet lmao.
Mark Wahlberg had said in an interview once that this film was one of the most enjoyable ones he got to be a part of. And I agree with him on this. The talent in this cast is truly amazing.
He also had the best lines.
I think Wahlberg just likes cursing people out and this gave him a perfect cover. This role is every bully's wet dream.
Jack Nicholson has a phase in the 90's and 2000's where he played in a lot of comedies. He was thrilled to play a villain again in this movie!
I truly miss seeing Jack Nicholson. It sucks that him and Gene Hackman retired from acting. They are still two of absolute best actors to ever grace the silver screen.
This is a comedy performance.
I think the best part of the ending is that you think Sullivan has gotten away with everything until Dignam just shows up when you least expect it. Leo’s death will forever be one of the most shocking deaths in any movie too, just comes out of nowhere
For no reason
You mean Diglet. 😂
So true
I think that even with Sullivan "getting away with it," he probably doesn't have much meaning left in his life. Costello is gone as well as his relationship and what he thinks is his child. He probably doesn't have any actual family left either, having been raised by his Grandmother. To me, Sullivan even looks a bit relieved when he sees Dignam(Diglet), knowing that he won't have to continue living a lie. Sullivan probably figured that Dignam knew the truth, and that it was only a matter of time. Maybe Dignam didn't care that much about Costigan, but he would never forgive for what happened to Queenan.
I think that was the first time he had a character die since titanic
As a jaded cynical old man, I find the girls reactions to the violence surprisingly refreshing.

Awww 🥰 😅
It is a satisfying ending! Leo stopped Matt Damon in the end by getting the message to Wahlberg in the end.
Indeed, every time I watch this I am pissed off after Sullivan wins. And then Dignam takes care of bidness and I am just like "Fuck yes, bro".
That's absolutely 100% right. The bad guy can never ever win. If they by some miracle do win. We got to have sequel where they die.
Mark Wahlberg's addition to the original story was to make American audiences not cry over a sad ending.
Idk I think Sullivan dying in the end and Dignam (as vulgar as he was, was still a good cop) getting his revenge is a happy enough ending to me. I’m sure the media would figure out & expose what happened after they found Sullivans body too…a lot of people died though holy fuck
The Chinese original that this was a remake of was better... the ending had the "bad" guy win and not get caught... but US audiences didn't like that.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 Ya. The original had no Wahlberg character, whose only job was to just be brash and get revenge. American audiences are children and can't handle a realistic ending where the good guys lose.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 I did not know this movie was A remake. Thank you for explaining that.
@@handsomeX I'm not one to choose an absolute favorite movie most the time, but I think this is.
Now do you:
Option A - Immediately take said evidence to the police station so the mole can be outed as the traitor (maybe even playing a recording of them confessing their crimes to further humiliated them), and will be arrested.
It kinda reminds me of No Country For Old Men. Totally not what people were expecting
The theater gasped, then the theater gasped, then the theater laughed when the guy who shot Leo gets his.
Everyone was talking about the head shots and then the badass ending. I’m not a Wahlberg fan but that’s his shining moment. But really it’s Nicholson’s acting and Leo’s that takes this movie to the high level it’s at, and obviously Scorsese brings it out of them.
that's why tragedy is considered a more effective form of fiction when dealing with realism
Mark Wahlberg's dialogue is what I remembered most
"I'm the guy who does his job; you must be the other guy."

You saying Diglett had me in tears XD
Thanks for that!
It took me a second watch to pull it all together too. She's having Leo's character's baby though so that's all the redemption we can get. That and Walberg's character is still alive doing his vigilante justice.
It's called The Departed for a reason.
"The Departed" was an American remake/reimagining of the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs," which IMHO, is the superior version.
For example, the pivotal elevator scene? I thought IA's version was far more suspenseful/dramatic/shocking than The Departed's.
plus i'm so excited that she is watching with carley this should be fun !
Just sitting down to watch this. Very cool you mentioned Blood Diamond in Leo DiCaprios body of work, Cassie. It's a great, difficult movie that's always been one of my favs.
💯
Winner of 4 Oscars including Best Picture. This is one of Scorsese's best crime thriller movies ever made.
Eh, I don’t think it’s the best. I think the Academy just gave him the award just to act all sympathetic for screwing him over for Raging Bull and Goodfellas.
Plus it's just a remake
Let's not forgot this movie is a straight remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs".
This is a ending you talk about for years. I watched a interview short with Tarantino where he talks about having people leave the theater and making a continuation in their own heads instead of being spoon fed every detail. Like every one is still wondering what was in the briefcase in pulp fiction.
Cool Hand Luke (1967)- Paul Newman 😎
Papillon (1973)- Steve McQueen / Dustin Hoffman🦋
American Splendor(2003)- Paul Giamatti✍️
This is my favorite channel on RUclips. Every reaction is just a joy, whether I love the movie, hate it, or haven't even seen it.
Hasta be one of y’all’s best reactions. That stair that cassie gave Carly when she told her she said the incorrect name oh my gosh.
Oh, I can't wait. Definitely a favorite of mine. I hope you were as speechless as I was the first time. Lol
One of my all time favourite films. Great reaction. All the best from Scotland 🏴
Nicholson ad-libbed the "gnawing rat" scene and Leo just went with it. He (Leo) said it was the most thrilling experience of his career.
The Revenant is an Absolute Must watch.. Leo won best actor Oscar.
Indeed
Oh wow I didn't realize that he finally ended up winning one.
Based on the Chinese film Infernal/ Internal Affairs.
LoL when you dropped yer bottle during that one scene 😃 Think this movie played on the fact that Leo & Matt looked a lot a like back in the day
One of the most apt named movies 😉 Brilliant movie!
If you haven't seen Secretariat yes, I think you would really like reacting to it, based on true events. Also The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Also, The Book Thief, based in the best selling novel. I think these movies are right up your alley.
Thanks, John. Wanted to say this. I personally prefer the original.
If Leo is the greatest actor of our time, Jack Nicholson is the greatest of his. Plus, Jack actually has several Love stories that I know you both of you would love. Something’s Gotta Give and As Good As It Gets are two of the most recent.
as good as it gets was from 1997.... its 26 years old.. hardly recent.
leo is nowhere close to that..
Cassie's reaction after Costigan was shot was priceless. That, "No!!!!!!!" reverberated through my laptop. Thank you for your reaction!
Without a doubt, this is THE BEST reaction channel. You girls are fantastic! I throughly enjoy watching you both react to these amazing films. As I'm sure others have said, it allows us to relive the experience of watching these films for the very first time. Keep doing what you do!
It just goes to show and remind how quickly a person's life can really be taken. I was more than satisfied with the ending because it was abrupt and disturbing. You are only the main character in your own story. The good guy doesn't always win in a traditional sense etc.
This is also a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, well worth a watch if you have the time.
Yes, I 100% agree. But they won't be shock the 2nd time around since they already saw The Departed.🤣🤣🤣
Four years earlier. Fucking shameless. for people too dumb to read subtitles.
I prefer the original 'Infernal Affairs'. So much better.
WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE!
one of Leonardos best performances.
One of the best movies and film endings of all time. It’s rare for a director like Scorsese to make a masterpiece for every decade the last 40-50 years
I *LOVE* just how invested they were in this story 😊🙏
Please add "Cold Mountain" to the list for both of you to watch together. It's such a beautiful and underrated film.
Excellent movie!
Just when you think you are over your Carly-crush, she says she didn't like "Titanic" and, to paraphrase Al Pacino, "She pulls me back in!". 😂
You two are hilarious! I don't know how your editor is able to cut so much out of your Patreon full reactions and still make the YT version incredibly fun to watch, but she does! ❣
Neither of you have seen The Revenant?!? Definitely needs a reaction of it's own!
Oh Boy.... 😅
Way too edgy
Life doesn't always wrap things up nicely with a satisfying resolution. This movie works better because it has a just ending, but not the cliché satisfying one.
The Departed was a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs).
Ya'll are now required to watch MORE Leo movies! "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Marvin's Room", "Basketball Diaries", "Romeo & Juliet", "Shutter Island", "The Beach", "Don't Look Up", "The Revenant", "J. Edgar", "Inception", "Body of Lies", "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”, “The Aviator", "Gangs of New York", "The Man In the Iron Mask", "This Boy's Life". In conclusion...YES, Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the BEST male actors in the Western world!😄
you forgot THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
The " island " is called the beach .
Add Blood Diamond to the list as well.
@@tpndgo2061 yes, the Island is a whole different movie
Don't ignore Django or Once upon a time In Hollywood either. I'm also not seeing The wolf of wall street, but maybe it's already been reacted to on this channel. I remember seeing Leo on an 80's sitcom Growing Pains when he was a kid and no cap, I was immediately impressed by his acting chops.
One of Scorsese’s greatest films. A masterpiece.
I know that Scorsese gets a lot of credit for this movie but it's a remake so I feel like the credit should belong to the original makers and not Scorsese.
@@mikef2811 the basic idea and some key moments are the same. But the departed is so much better in everyway.
@@josephwalker1853 I prefer the original better
@@mikef2811 why?
@@josephwalker1853 The reason I preferred the original over this one was because of the ending. The bad guy got away with it. Plus, Scorsese was not the original maker. He took the idea off of another person. Same goes for remake of OldBoy, the remake is never as good as the original. It's a copy version of the original.
