The part where Costello says "She fell funny" was a Jack Nicholson idea. Matt Damon talked about it in an interview, it would have just stopped after the executions but the rest was Nicholson's idea.
Two of the best movie quotes in the first 2 minutes. " Back in those days you had the church, which was just a way of saying, we had each other " "I don't want to be a product of my environment I want my environment to be a product of me"

Masterpiece! Performances, story, pace, sigh...I'm glad it was a long movie bc the story needed to develop and the director knew that. The ending is a gut punch, followed by 2 to the chest and then one to the head. Crazy story!
Now you seriously HAVE to watch "Black Mass" with Johnny Depp!! Amazing movie, amazing cast and it might be my favourite role Depp has ever played. I think I might watch it right now actually. He plays a real life person and the former boss of the Irish mob in Boston. The infamous, James "Whitey" Bulger. Bulger is exactly who Jack Nicholson's characrer is based off of in The Departed. Whitey Bulger was #2 on the FBI's Most Wanted List ... to put that in perspective, the only person above him on the list, at that point in history, was a guy named, Osama Bin Laden!! Once Bin Laden was killed he was pushed up to #1 and it didn't really take very long to find him at that point. Whitey even said himself that he knew his days were numbered when all the resources they were using to find Bin Laden were freed up. This last fact doesn't spoil anything about the movie "Black Mass." It was made before this happened... but several years ago Whitey was beaten to death by another inmate in federal prison.
Love both movies, despite Hollywood's obsession with poor attempts at "Boston accents." I recommend The Departed for its script, acting chops, and wide range of emotions (tension, shock, confusion, light humor). As Ash said it's ~2.5 hours, but you're hooked. I recommend Black Mass for a more "gritty and real" portrayal of the city, its surrounding areas, and real characters. Though a cinema layperson, I think it's a prime example where I see and appreciate the full production (+ a good dose of bias as a staunch New Englander). This includes cinematography and set location leaning into the "drab" working-class suburb feel neither cheesy nor stereotypical; hair/makeup capturing Bulger's look; Depp's ability to convey a sense of both "neighborhood boy" and "pure evil" in demeanor, mannerisms, and tone; lighting that enhances all of those points (notably Bulger's blue eyes, but also seemingly pools of black in any given scene). It also stays true to its roots as a story about Whitey Bulger and the Winter Hill Gang. While there is some context in his relationship with John Connolly, it does not delve too deep, and brother Billy Bulger is more of a character in passing despite having a story of his own. I got carried away typing, sorry for piggybacking on your comment.
In real life the actual Boston gangster's brother was the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. That shot at the end of the gold building is the Massachusetts State Capital building.
This partiality inspired by a true story. The FBI actually had a South Boston mob boss as an informant. Whitey Bulger. Who then disappeared for over 30 years. It’s also a film: Black Mass. starring Johnny Depp in Jack Nicholson’s “role”
I was late to the party, had to scroll to check. Knew someone would mention ‘Whitey’. Also the only reason the Italian Mob could never get a stronghold in Boston. Black Mass 👍🏼 disturbing but awesome.
No, it's a direct rip of a Hong Kong film - Internal Affairs - both are excellent in their own ways, but I still lean towards the original despite the amazing work from Jack, Leo and Matt.
@@xsjado_anon I grew up in Boston and moved away in 2016 and I can tell you this is movie is loosely based in the life story of James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger Jr. ( September 3, 1929 - October 30, 2018) was an American organized crime boss who led the Winter Hill Gang in the Winter Hill neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts, a city directly northwest of Boston. On December 23, 1994, Bulger fled the Boston area and went into hiding after his former FBI handler, John Connolly, tipped him off about a pending RICO indictment against him. Bulger remained at large for sixteen years. After his 2011 arrest, federal prosecutors tried Bulger for nineteen murders based on grand jury testimony from Kevin Weeks and other former criminal associates. Although Bulger adamantly denied it, the FBI revealed that he had served as an informant for several years starting in 1975. Bulger provided information about the inner workings of the Patriarca crime family, his Italian-American Mafia rivals based in Boston and Providence, Rhode Island. In return, Connolly, as Bulger's FBI handler, ensured that the Winter Hill Gang were effectively ignored.[5][6][7] Beginning in 1997, press reports exposed various instances of criminal misconduct by federal, state, and local officials with ties to Bulger, causing embarrassment to several government agencies, especially to the FBI. After Bulger became a fugitive in 1994, he was added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in 1999, and was considered the most wanted person on the list behind Osama bin Laden. He was apprehended along with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, outside an apartment complex in Santa Monica, California, on June 22, 2011. By then he was 81 years old. Bulger and Greig were then extradited to Boston and taken to court under heavy guard. In June 2012, Greig pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud, and conspiracy to commit identity fraud, receiving a sentence of eight years in prison. Bulger declined to seek bail and remained in custody. Bulger's trial began in June 2013. He was tried on thirty-two counts of racketeering, money laundering, extortion and weapons charges, including complicity in nineteen murders.[16] On August 12, Bulger was found guilty on 31 counts, including both racketeering charges, and was found to have been involved in eleven murders.[17] On November 14, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus five years by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper. Bulger was incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida. Bulger was transferred to several facilities in October 2018; first to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma and then to the United States Penitentiary, Hazelton, near Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Bulger, who was in a wheelchair, was beaten to death by inmates on October 30, 2018, within hours of his arrival at Hazelton. In 2022, Fotios Geas, Paul DeCologero and Sean McKinnon were charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in Bulger's death.

Jack Nicholson stole the show once again especially with the infamous rat monologue, he was chewing the scenery in the literal sense. The ending was also symbolic.
In an interview, Leo said Jack went completely off script that whole scene. He mentioned Jack wasn't even supposed to have a gun. He also said that his character showing fear wasn't acting. Leo was feeling genuinely afraid of Jack Nicholson.
Since you both love Jack (who doesn't?) might I recommend one of his absolute classics: the 70s neo-noir mystery Chinatown. The twists in that one will blow you away.
It's a pretty common practice for Feds to use high ranking crime bosses as informants. Lookup Whitey Bulger as an example. The bosses give up smaller fish (lesser criminals) and are given immunity to an extent for their crimes. The reasoning is that it's easier to maintain crime than to eliminate it which is next to impossible. And normally once a crime boss is removed it creates a power vaccum which is often pretty bloody. Everyone scrambling to be the new boss with lots of people killed in the process.
Great reaction like always, this film is a remake of a Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs (2002) and some fun facts about this movie Scorsese was the only person who warner Bros wanted to direct the film, and he agreed to do it pretty quickly. Warner Bros had bought the rights to Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs (2002) and always had Scorsese in mind to direct a remake. When Scorsese read the script he loved it as it reminded him of classic Hollywood genre pictures by people like Robert Aldrich, Sam Fuller, and Don Siegel. Specifically, Scorsese said it reminded him of White Heat - a 1949 film noir directed by Raoul Walsh and starring James Cagney. Production of the film was so long and arduous that even Martin Scorsese was left ill and exhausted from making the film. Scorsese later said, “I call The Departed ‘Moral Ground Zero’. All the characters are killed at the end, and there was no place to go after that. Scorsese had been nominated for 7 Oscars previously, and lost every time. The Departed, though, was the movie where Scorsese finally won. The Departed won Best Picture (the first remake of a foreign film to do so) and Scorsese won Best Director. When Scorsese won the Oscar, it was presented to him by three of his old movie brat pals in Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola. The lead role of Billy Costigan is played by Leonardo DiCaprio, in one of his most acclaimed roles. When the studio bought the rights to Infernal Affairs, however, they had another famous actor in mind for the role. The studio originally planned for Costigan to be played by Tom Cruise. And the main female character in the movie is Madolyn, who has relationships with both Sullivan and Costigan. She’s played by Vera Farmiga but Scorsese originally had a shortlist of 4 big stars to play Madolyn: Kate Winslet, Emily Blunt, Hilary Swank and Jennifer Aniston. One of the most popular and acclaimed moments in The Departed is when Costello is talking to Costigan about the rat, and questions if it could be Costigan himself. Costello pulls out a gun and points it in Costigan’s face. That wasn’t in the script - Nicholson improvised it, and DiCaprio wasn’t expecting it. Then Costello burns a drawing in front of him with a lighter - this was also not scripted. Nicholson also improvised the, “I got this rat. This gnawing, teething f***ing rat,” line. Keep up the amazing work.
I'm confused by how confused Ash is about Costello being an FBI informant. Even the way he was talking about it at the end (42:22) sounds like he still doesn't really get it.😂
I'm from Boston, and this movie deserves every accolade you can give it. It's loosely based on the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang, Whitey Bulger turned FBI Informant, different endings, lol
@@bikingchupei2447 The character of Costello was based on Whitey Bulger. Yes, the film is a remake of the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs"; but the Boston setting and the Costello character were based on Bulger and his Winter Hill Gang.
My friend Ash, Nicolson wasn't playing a character. Hanah was kinda spot on. Everyone is a rat. Police chiefs and big mafia bosses are a different side of the same coin. They do business together, they collaborate. The system is so corrupted that different police agencies who want a bigger piece of the pie don't even know who is an informant of who. And they antagonize each other. Ultimately, it doesn't even matter. While the lowly police officers and petty criminals are playing a game of cowboys and indians with each other, thinking they make a difference, or they're climbing ranks, their bosses are shaking hands backstage. The game is rigged from the beginning, and nobody wins because the actual point of the game is to carry on existing so that people at the top can retain their status quo. People watch this movie and they find it absurd. That's what's absurd to me. This movie is very close to real life.
The Departed: my 2nd favorite Scorsese film, Taxi Driver, being the first, this movie is the gift that keeps on giving, it gets better every time you watch it. The soundtrack is also amazing. It is Such good timing that Hannah asked about nuns drinking beer. Earlier today we were chatting with my mom and my aunt. And my mom said that 1 time she was volunteering at A hospital called Sisters Of Mercy. The nuns that worked at that hospital would regularly do volunteer work out in the community. Everything from running Salvation Army to helping people move to a new apartment that are too infirm to do so themselves. They helped my mom do something and I can't remember what but my mom wanted to thank them but didn't know what to do. So she went to the priest at the hospital and asked him what might be something to give them as a thank you. Without missing a beat the priest says "Beer......just get them beer."😂
Hannah, I'm Catholic. Drinking to the point of drunkenness is a sin in Catholicism. (Yes, people do it, anyway, but that's the official teaching.) But you can absolutely enjoy alcohol in moderation. You have to know yourself and practice self-discipline, which is really the big key to Catholic living if you actually try to do it. It also does not matter if you are a priest, nun, any kind of religious, or a just a regular layperson. Anybody can enjoy a drink, but the sin is in being drunk.
While this story itself is entirely fictional, the premise of the head of an Irish crime family actually being a protected FBI informant himself is based on an actual person. If I remember correctly, his name was James "Whitey" Bulger and I believe Johnny Depp portrayed him, think the film was called Black Mass. Costello is based on him and this was such a hit that people got interested in the inspiration himself.
Bostonian here. That is correct. This film weaves a couple of facts about "Whitey" Bulger into its fiction. The first is that Bulger's FBI handler routinely tipped him off to protect Bulger as an asset, so in a way he had a man inside the police. The other is that "Whitey" Bulger -- mob boss and serial killer -- had a brother, William "Billy" Bulger, who was actually president of the Massachusetts State Senate... so there's a theme of evil/good duality there (although Billy Bulger's administration was rife with corruption... a criminal enterprise of a different stripe).
the final shot with the rat actualy is focusing on the Justice Building in the view from the window, yeah the rat was obvious and almost detracts from the justice building symbolism
Love this one. This movie is actually a remake of the original Hong Kong classic trilogy Infernal Affairs (2002) which was equally awesome. This movie is almost a clone of the first movie in the trilogy. Both have epic casts at their best. Excited for this reaction!
In my view, Jack Nicholson is the actors actor. Every person he worked with said he was always prepared, cordial, professional, and hilarious. Beyond all that he is one of those rare actors that doesn't even need to speak, he absorbs a role so well his eyes and body language says everything. It's a shame he retired but like the legend he is he's living the best life everyday.

some extra symbolism for ya, throughout the movie every time you see a x next to or behind a character that person dies later in the film. Some examples, Jack Nicholson walks infront of a x at the beginning of the film, Leonardo de caprio is in front of x's in the airplane terminal, the sun shining a x through the window on the wall in Matt Damon's office, and many more.

@mikef2811 Wait, what ??? You re saying that the ending was different when the movie came out??
@@philippebiendon5809 No. What I am saying is that this movie was a remake from Hong Kong's movie, Infernal Affairs. Infernal Affair, the bad guy never got caught and went on with his life.
@@mikef2811 damne , i didn't know that.... freaking American always stilling the best work of others. Whats the name of that japanese movie ??
I love the way Ash gets annoyed at actual symbolisms! 🤣 This was a fun reaction to watch!
Tbf, that rat running across the screen got raked over the coals when this movie came out. Everyone thought the exact same thing, like bit on the nose, innit, Martin?
@@potato-whiz No it didn't lol. Also, It wasn't intended to be symbolism or have any deep meaning.... it was a joke.
@@TahiriVeila13ABYthere is literally a petition to get Martin to release a version where the rat is digitally scrubbed out.
@@TahiriVeila13ABY it absolutely did. I was there, I remember when it came out. Everyone hated it and thought it was a heavy handed tack on at the end of an overall great film. Go look at the discourse from that time. Go look at the archived IMDb boards lol. Go look at the reviews from then. It don’t ruin the movie or anything but it was just more of an eye roll moment for people.
@@theamericanaromantic lol right, I don’t get why we’re doing revisionism here. I very distinctly remember the rat discourse.

The acting in this film is beyond legendary. The cast is equally so too.
The cool thing is that you rly feel and experience how Hannah appreciates movies more and more
"You think you were the only one he had on the inside?!?!"
"Pfffrr...WHAT???"
Best reaction ever! :-D
Boy did Scorsese do us dirty with that elevator scene. Such a gut punching but great ending.
I love the irony how Ash loves his symbols, but when Scorsese shows the most blatant symbol of a rat, hes like "Come off it."
If you love Jack Nicholson please watch One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest...you will NOT regret it! 🙏 ❤
The part where Costello says "She fell funny" was a Jack Nicholson idea. Matt Damon talked about it in an interview, it would have just stopped after the executions but the rest was Nicholson's idea.
Now. . If ya keep the camera rolling. . . 😉
Same with the gun when him and Leo are in the restaurant.
I don't know if you watched yet, but a reaction for The Wolf of Wall Street would be perfect
Two of the best movie quotes in the first 2 minutes.
" Back in those days you had the church, which was just a way of saying, we had each other "
"I don't want to be a product of my environment I want my environment to be a product of me"
She felt funny is the best lmao
One thing I never noticed till now is that the psychiatrists Boston accent is a lot stronger with Leo. With Matt Damon she speaks in her professional accent. I wonder what such code-switching means? Did she instinctively trust one man more than the other right from the start?
Staff Sargent Dignam is right up there with Severus Snape as a character that demonstrates that unpleasant doesn’t necessarily equal a villain
By far the best film of the 21st Century. One of your best reaction videos. You two need to check out the 1975 Classic "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Jack Nicholson is Unforgettable in that movie.
Ooh I saw this reaction pop up in my feed and had to come check it out. Amazing movie and I love seeing people react to it
First movie I ever saw Leo in that I thought, damn this guy is actually good. Not just a romance lead like Titanic or Romeo.
I recommend watching the original film Infernal Affairs . The departed was closely based off of that movie and its a banger with some of the biggest Asian stars at the time. I remember going to see the departed and being very confused. I was like "hey ive seen this before , but i havent "

You gotta google the symbolisms in this movie. Each main character that dies is literally marked for death with an X. There is one on the elevator wall behind Leo, the carpet before Matt Damon gets killed etc etc. For real, you love your symbolism, google it and check out the screenshots 😀
It was a total accident for sure. Dead 30 minutes after his transfer to a new prison 😂
Depp should have played Jack's part in the departed. Jack was miscast. Was a characature in The Departed
Hannah really needs to see the first two Godfathers if only on her own channel
Love the rat at the end. You know whoever came up with that was laughing their balls off. No F's were given.
One of my all-time favourite films. Congrats on 150K subscribers, Ash!
This film has given me the realization that Hannah has no understanding of the Boston/New England accent of Northeast America
"My theory on feds is they're like mushrooms. Feed 'em shit and keep 'em in the daahk."
In real life the actual Boston gangster's brother was the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. That shot at the end of the gold building is the Massachusetts State Capital building.
"I thought we were gonna get sprayed!" "Close your eyes it stings!" You two are hilarious!🤣🤣
Yo. When Leo got shot, did she say "I just farted"? That's how you know that this is a fantastic movie!!!
I like how Ash instantly recognized the terrible Scorsese decision to put an actual rat in the final shot. “Come on Martin.” Exactly.
Yeah; too on the nose.
@@xsjado_anon I must watch, not the first time I’ve heard this.
@@xsjado_anon true, but Whitey did also have direct influence on the story with Nicholson’s character and the setting.
The “she fell funny” line was improvised by Jack and Damon said they were all laughing their asses off

"He tapped mine earlier and it wobbled for like 5 minutes!" 😂😂😂
Since you both love Jack (who doesn't?) might I recommend one of his absolute classics: the 70s neo-noir mystery Chinatown. The twists in that one will blow you away.
Everything and everyone in this movie is nothing but pure masterpiece
It's a pretty common practice for Feds to use high ranking crime bosses as informants. Lookup Whitey Bulger as an example. The bosses give up smaller fish (lesser criminals) and are given immunity to an extent for their crimes. The reasoning is that it's easier to maintain crime than to eliminate it which is next to impossible. And normally once a crime boss is removed it creates a power vaccum which is often pretty bloody. Everyone scrambling to be the new boss with lots of people killed in the process.
Nicely done guy's! If you liked this you're gonna love :"The Town!" Another Boston crime classic!

The character of Costello was based on Whitey Bulger. Yes, the film is a remake of the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs"; but the Boston setting and the Costello character were based on Bulger and his Winter Hill Gang.
Wow! Finally! Haha I think I stopped requesting this, like, 1yr ago. LMBO Glad y'all finally got around to it.
26:59 Hannah just surprises me every time to know that it burns so close your eyes wow
You guys should watch Black mass with johnny Depp. It's based on the real life mobster this movie is based on

Without missing a beat the priest says
"Beer......just get them beer."😂
This movie is so good. One of my favourites
I’m a Protestant and laugh at Catholics
Man... I still remember the gasp in the theater during the elevator scene.

some extra symbolism for ya, throughout the movie every time you see a x next to or behind a character that person dies later in the film. Some examples, Jack Nicholson walks infront of a x at the beginning of the film, Leonardo de caprio is in front of x's in the airplane terminal, the sun shining a x through the window on the wall in Matt Damon's office, and many more.
That beautiful building is the State House Boston, MA. The capital of Massachusetts. There are some dope ass Boston based movies. They are all loosely based on actual events in this complicated and historic region.
