The ending is really sad. Andrew didn't regress. He was brought back to sanity, but he still preferred to be lobotomized rather than live with what he had done.
It gets even worse if you understand how psychology works - it's entirely likely that the only reason Andrew killed his wife in the first place was because he was experiencing an episode of PTSD brought on from his time in the war. When the US soldiers discovered the bodies of those Jewish people in Germany, they were so traumatized that they snapped and reverted to their military training, which conditioned them to shoot the enemy. When Andrew discovered his children's dead bodies, the similarity to those Jewish bodies immediately made him start "replaying" his experience from WW2 (notice Andrew's thousand-yard-stare before he shoots his wife). I have gotta say, you two have become my two favorite reactors. your passion, enthusiasm, fights, and banter is reason enough to come back. so entertaining. love you both so much :)
This movie blew my mind when it came out, I watched it like dozen of times after that and every time I was discovering new details. It is definetly in my top 3 movies of all times.
Hey Ash, I've watch over 1000 movies in my lifetime and I could tell you only a few like your Hannah would get the eventually plot twist to this movie until the very end. That's what makes this type of writing and directing so amazing and spellbining. Props to Leo and Marty for taking us on a wild wild ride. Next you need to watch "The Departed".
You really need to find a way to where you can both have two earbuds in. You have to be missing out on some of the experience by only having audio in one ear. That must be horrible tbh.
If you like this psychological thriller? I think you'll like ''Identity'' with John Cusack - Or ''Zodiac'' that is HUGE casting wise! Its a great film! Shutter island is a classic - The cast is amazing! You should've heard the gasps in the cinema lol
*THESE* are the thriller/mysteries that I love (off top of my head, loved “The Prestige”-4 same reason) A story that doesn’t hold your hand at all, but if you do pay close attention, you can put together just what is going on. Love it, masterclass. Can’t stand mysteries where the “surprise” wasn’t even a part of the story’s world, or when a scene revisited is changed, revealing or hiding an important detail NOT due to a character’s flawed memory/unreliable narrator; but very purposeful & sloppy by the director. Creating a lazy “surprise” rather than a clever puzzle you may or very well may not see-but it’s there
I've watched this movie twice and only now, by watching your reaction, I realize the true meaning of the last scene and last line. Awesome reaction, guys!
Man great reaction! This film is on my top5 all time for a reason, it's amazing. Incredibly impressed with how Hannah managed to catch so many details on the first watch.
The thing I like about the ending is that you can interpret it two ways because maybe he has regressed & that line at the end is just idle conversation. Total Recall has a similar ending. They're the kind of movies that you wanna discuss with someone right after you leave the theater
Something that was pointed out to me about this movie and one of the things that I appreciate a lot is that this is one of the VERY FEW movies that shows asylum staff as the "good guys" - often times if you see an asylum in a movie/story, they always have an evil, ulterior motive. In this case it's people doing their genuine best to help even the worst of their cases.
Okay, so this is maybe the 4th reaction I’ve watched. I am so happy that you connected with this film. It is a masterpiece, clearly. And its also humane. It has respect for the characters, and the audience. I loved watching you piece it together, and mostly i loved your reaction to the full realization of the story. You are both the best. Patreoning now. Bye.
So happy that you guys did this. It's one of the best underrated psycho-thrillers. Hannah is SO on point with finding that Chuck is the Dr. And Teddy is a patient. Great job you guys.

This movie is a fucking trip. It is so god damn good. Absolutely underappreciated film. That ending just hurts. Like the whole thing with him realizing the truth, but then him having the realization that he doesn't want to live as the monster is just a gut punch.

The word the doctor in the cave said that you didn't hear/understand was "Kafkaesque" which relates the the writings of author Franz Kafka where the main characters in his stories experience a nightmarish and illogical scenario where some unknown, powerful entity, power, or organisation is in complete control of you or you sense something sinister and yet bewildering is pulling all the strings and you are helpless to fight it or the complexity of bureaucracy leads to insane and illogical results. For example, in the Kafka story 'The Trial', a bank clerk is randomly arrested out of the blue one day without knowing what crime he has supposedly committed and when he asks why, nobody answers him or they think he's pretending not to know and nobody attempts to defend him. Or like when you're applying for an internship to get experience for a job only to be turned down for not having enough experience. Or imagine you are applying to a bank to get your first ever credit card but the form you need to fill in to get your first credit card requires you to fill in the account number of your current credit card. In this case, the doctor in the cave is talking about the pointless, absurd scenario of being stuck in an insane asylum where admitting you're insane confirms your insanity whilst denying you're insane means you're delusional and in denial about your own insanity, thereby making it impossible to escape as a sane person in their eyes.
First reaction I've seen for this movie with someone who really understand so much. Hannah, you're the first one who have noticed that the glass of water missed. It's because Andrew / Teddie was affraid and sick with water so he didn't see the glass. And you realized so early that he was patient 67, bravo. You are both right about the last sentence. I'm convinced that he knew. And that is THE big difference with the original Book. At the end of the nouvel, he didn't say those words so we can presume he has reset. In the movie, I think he made his choice. Thank you for your great reaction from France.
I first watched Shutter Island when I was 14, and I had no idea what was going on till the end. But watching it, knowing what happened, you do pick up on little hints that allude to the ending. I love how you noticed how that female patient asked Dr Sheen for a glass of water for the purpose of sending him away from almost the beginning of the movie. Love it
Ive read in some other comment that thew new approach trying empathy and actually trying to find out and treat traumas of the patients was some new thing that started by that decade-ish. Its interesting to see everyone was in on it, genuinely trying to help him.
🤭 This film, especially for a reaction channel, is a great lesson in jumping to too many conclusions right away. 😁 22:44 _Bravo Hannah!_ 55:18 *Ash:* _"There's no way he's regressed again."_ That *is* the question, isn't it? Did he actually regress? Or is he now only pretending to, so he can end his pain? Terrific reaction. 😄
Great reaction Hannah is definitely sharp! Not a psychological thriller but great revenge thriller is Count of Monte Cristo if you haven’t seen it yet A++
it took me a few watches after first seeing this movie to be convinced he was already a patient. I had a story made up in my mind that he was an actual detective and was drugged to be a patient. but one line convinced me otherwise, remember the scene when the manager says to Leo that he lets the patients talk and he listens to them. that made me believe he went with the scenario Leo created in his head about him being a detective and made all the employees including his doctor play along. notice how when they were interviewing the employees it was like they didn’t care, it’s because they really didn’t. the lady wrote “run” because she knew if he didn’t take advantage of the situation and escape they were going to do the surgeries on him. they didn’t want to do those surgeries on him but he just couldn’t get right an accept who he was.
I'm so happy you guys reacted to that! I was recommending this movie a lot. Hannah actually nailed it. You both were so much invested to the movie, it was a pleasure to watch! The best Leo's role ever in my opinion. Finest Scorsese movie too. If you ever run out of movies, I would recommend Bladerunner (final cut) and Bladerunner 2049, both are amazing and got this detective vibe too.
"Shutter Island" is probably, alongside "The Lord of the Rings", my favourite movie, ever. The acting, the plot, the twist, the second vewing, the message, the last sentence of DiCaprio's character... This is an insane movie. Insane.
It's definitely in my top films. The Others gets a spot up there for me as well for how unique a take that one was. With some massively quality jump scares as well.
But what you guys missed was the fact that Leo's character WILL eventually regress, even if he stays as his true self for a while. So, in actuality, he chose to be lobotomized in his true self to avoid becoming the detective and causing harm to people.
16:25 "baby i hate the sound of pencils, like that was unbearable for me," lool the genuineness in her voice, proving our millennial perspective on what hardship is

You're observations and instincts are great, Hannah. You're a queen.
So awesome, guys!
Props to Hannah for figuring out the twists and noticing the little details. Well done to Ash for really understanding that last line, it was so satisfying to watch his reaction cause not a lot of people get it. Thank you guys for another amazing reaction❤️❤️❤️
This is one of those movies that gets more and more fun to watch every time you watch it cause you start picking up on things you weren’t paying attention to. Top 10 favorite movie of mine! I remember showing this movie to my sister and it blew her mind. She ended up showing her friends and it blew their minds too. Love this movie.
Been recommending this one for a while! Insane twists, and I was getting so frustrated that you guys were onto the plot the whole time 🤣 I wanted you guys to be as shocked at the reveal as I was. But you guys had a feeling that something had to be hidden. Great intuition, and another great reaction!
Thank you mate for recommending it ❤️
Watching this film after the first time is always fun.
Honoured to have watched this with you mate ☺️
Hannah is a legend! I've watched this movie multiple times and somehow never noticed the missing glass. Eagle Eye! She had this movie figured out so fast and when I saw it I had no idea lol!
13:38 did you notice the missing bottle?
i cannot believe how Hannah pieced all of this together som damn fast, watching it the first time. BRAVO!!
You really, really NEED to watch "A Beautiful Mind" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Love your reactions.
Yep. And *Awakenings* with Robin Williams.
A beautiful mind is one of the best movies I've ever seen
Jack Nicholson at his finest, a young Danny DeVito, and even Scatman Crothers in really an all-star cast in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
So hyped to watch y'all with this!! Scorsese really messes with the head in this one. Then finishes by hitting the heart pretty hard.
I have gotta say,
you two have become my two favorite reactors.
your passion, enthusiasm, fights, and banter is reason enough to come back. so entertaining. love you both so much :)
you 2 should watch true detective season 1. amazing crime/thriller show.
👍...this...
@@timothyhedrick5295 I second this 👌👌👌
Yep and I voted for this so ash knows I know my shit. Lol
Yes 🙌🏻
This movie blew my mind when it came out, I watched it like dozen of times after that and every time I was discovering new details. It is definetly in my top 3 movies of all times.
Hey Ash, I've watch over 1000 movies in my lifetime and I could tell you only a few like your Hannah would get the eventually plot twist to this movie until the very end. That's what makes this type of writing and directing so amazing and spellbining. Props to Leo and Marty for taking us on a wild wild ride. Next you need to watch "The Departed".
- How about "The Others" - that one has a really interesting and unexpected plot twist.
You really need to find a way to where you can both have two earbuds in. You have to be missing out on some of the experience by only having audio in one ear. That must be horrible tbh.
So glad you and Hannah were able to really appreciate it by the end. My favorite thriller of all time and such an underrated Scorsese film.
She’s really smart. Great reaction
Hannah caught on so quick to the twist
Yeah I hate that! 😅
“You’re a Rab Lat!” Made my day 😂
Hannah’s empathy is always amazing to watch. I cried at the exact same time when realizing what was happening at the end 😂
If you like this psychological thriller? I think you'll like ''Identity'' with John Cusack - Or ''Zodiac'' that is HUGE casting wise! Its a great film! Shutter island is a classic - The cast is amazing! You should've heard the gasps in the cinema lol
The inmate he talked to that said "you did this to me" is the actor that played in the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street as the new Freddy Krueger
He also played Kelly in the 1976 film, The Bad News Bears.
And Rorschach in The Watchmen,...plus Bad News Bears.
Jackie Earl Haley.
so sad that the remake is a complete trash tho
*THESE* are the thriller/mysteries that I love (off top of my head, loved “The Prestige”-4 same reason)
A story that doesn’t hold your hand at all, but if you do pay close attention, you can put together just what is going on.
Creating a lazy “surprise” rather than a clever puzzle you may or very well may not see-but it’s there
How in the F*** did Hannah figure that out so fast?!?! Freaking genius.
I've watched this movie twice and only now, by watching your reaction, I realize the true meaning of the last scene and last line. Awesome reaction, guys!
This movie is the definition of symbolisms
Watch it again. There are lots of subtle hints that you don't pick up on first watch. It's brilliant.
Man great reaction! This film is on my top5 all time for a reason, it's amazing. Incredibly impressed with how Hannah managed to catch so many details on the first watch.
I really enjoy your guys reactions. This is definatley my favourite reaction channel on youtube.
BEST REACTION YETTT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR APPRECIATING THIS MOVIE PROPERLY
You caught on to everything that you were supposed to catch on to. Perfect
Ash... Quit messing around mate and put a ring on it. World's greatest detective!
Wooooooooooo!!!!
OMG! You guys rock, and roll bro!
JUSTTRUSTASH is the best!
Everyone better watch this video, like and share.
😂🤣🧐😬🥳🤩😃😁
Okay, so this is maybe the 4th reaction I’ve watched. I am so happy that you connected with this film. It is a masterpiece, clearly. And its also humane. It has respect for the characters, and the audience. I loved watching you piece it together, and mostly i loved your reaction to the full realization of the story. You are both the best. Patreoning now. Bye.
So happy that you guys did this. It's one of the best underrated psycho-thrillers.
Hannah is SO on point with finding that Chuck is the Dr. And Teddy is a patient.
Great job you guys.
- To be honest, I am glad I don't have the mind she does; I'm fairly intelligent, but having everything revealed at the end was mind-bendingly awesome, this movies truly took me through the wringer. If I had been like Hannah, I wouldn't have had nearly as good of a reaction, I would have basically spoiled the ending for myself figuring it out too soon.
This movie is a fucking trip. It is so god damn good. Absolutely underappreciated film. That ending just hurts. Like the whole thing with him realizing the truth, but then him having the realization that he doesn't want to live as the monster is just a gut punch.
Glad you liked this one! .... I think is time for you guys, well I´m thinking yu are ready for "Primal Fear" now. Great reaction and take care.
One of the most underrated movies of all-time
I love this movie. I never guessed that he is a patient so the ending really shocked me.
Hannah is always gonna guess the plot if you throw out 50 theories! Hahaha I am just poking fun! I've always loved this movie too. I wasn't a big Leo fan in his early career, but mature Leo kills it in basically everything he's in.
I think her first guess was spot on so I’m going off that first one 😂
@@justtrustash haha for sure. Like I said, I'm just poking fun. Hannah is definitely very observant, and has a knack for seeing the future like The Minority Report, haha. I'm usually the one saying to my wife, "Babe, Babe!" Like I'm some genius, pointing at the screen, and she just says, "Uh yeah, you just now got that??"
30:20 Ash no….. this is the moment she starts looking at you differently. She tried so hard to not react or comment on that scream of yours 😂. LOVE THE CHANNEL!
Let’s gooo!! Appreciate you mate ❤️
🤣 This is the moment he realized he fucked up. I mean he uses the word bitch so much in his videos, this was the moment, he literally turned into a bitch 🤣😂. Symbolisms 😆. She's not gonna look at him the same way anymore. Poor guy!
Eyyyyyy welcome back Ash!
This movie is one of my favorites. Another gem from Marty Scorsese
Symbolism Ash! Symbolism!🤣
I love how this is a completely different movie the second time you watch it.
Such an amazing film. In particular the dream sequences are phenomenal. Leo clearly knows how to pick a role. Also Ben Kingsley is always a win.
Love it
Hannah figured it out so freaking fast! nice
I'm so impressed...Hannah got every clue in real time. No one does that!!❤
Props to Hannah for figuring it out so quickly
My girl 🙃
Ive read in some other comment that thew new approach trying empathy and actually trying to find out and treat traumas of the patients was some new thing that started by that decade-ish. Its interesting to see everyone was in on it, genuinely trying to help him.
If ash and Hannah made a podcast, I would absolutely listen to it.
Oiiiiiii sooooooon!!! See you there 👀
🤭 This film, especially for a reaction channel, is a great lesson in jumping to too many conclusions right away. 😁
22:44 _Bravo Hannah!_
55:18 *Ash:* _"There's no way he's regressed again."_
That *is* the question, isn't it? Did he actually regress? Or is he now only pretending to, so he can end his pain?
Terrific reaction. 😄
I was laughing through every discovery they made 😂
@@MusicLife-pb2es 🤣 _Right?!_ LOL!
Appreciate you mate ❤️
When the lady takes the water and sips it it’s not there but it’s on the table. Bc it’s all in his imagination
Great reaction Hannah is definitely sharp! Not a psychological thriller but great revenge thriller is Count of Monte Cristo if you haven’t seen it yet A++
"AHH! Your air went in my eye! 😠" Had me in tears. Oh and those dang rab lats 🤣🤣
it took me a few watches after first seeing this movie to be convinced he was already a patient.
He did accept who he was, and realised hi didn’t want to live with it.
Can't help but give mad respect to Hannah and kiss that super compassionate and beautiful detective brain of hers like Ash did.
Appreciate you recommending it ❤️
"Shutter Island" is probably, alongside "The Lord of the Rings", my favourite movie, ever. The acting, the plot, the twist, the second vewing, the message, the last sentence of DiCaprio's character...
This is an insane movie. Insane.
It's definitely in my top films. The Others gets a spot up there for me as well for how unique a take that one was. With some massively quality jump scares as well.
Ash, after this scene about woman axing her husband you should hide your sword 100% 🤣🤣
But what you guys missed was the fact that Leo's character WILL eventually regress, even if he stays as his true self for a while. So, in actuality, he chose to be lobotomized in his true self to avoid becoming the detective and causing harm to people.
im not even a quarter in and already love it
My day 1 brother ❤️
@@justtrustash have a great day Ash ✌and send Hannah my regards 🎻
The shot in the beginning is Alcatraz island in San Francisco but the entire movie was filmed in Massachusetts
The beauty of movies like Shutter Island is watching first watchers react 😂
16:25 "baby i hate the sound of pencils, like that was unbearable for me,"
lool the genuineness in her voice, proving our millennial perspective on what hardship is
Epic reaction. And Hanna, you’re incredible. To figure out basically the whole plot halfway in? Get outta here! Best reaction channel on RUclips, by far!!!
Joeyyyyyy where’s my compliment? Haha love you bro ❤️
@@justtrustash you’re THE man, my brother! Symbolisms!!!
It was so difficult to understand until I rewatched it a few times. Now that I understand, the movie was genius.
I feel so ashamed that I only just realised he actually did NOT regress. You guys were so quick on everything, I thoroughly enjoyed rewatching Shutter Island with you.
"It begins very manly"
The editor of the film is called Thelma Schummaker, who at the time she edited this movie was in her early 70s.
For the curious, Patricia Clarkson's character said "That's the Kafkaesque genius of it," referencing writer Franz Kafka.
I had a feeling she said that. I only know Kafka's fiction via "The Metamorphosis" story in which its protagonist Gregor Samsa awakens as a big insect one morning.
Symbolisms
37:45 - "Rab Lats"! I cant stop laughing, bro! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 And Hannah's reaction!... priceless! 😄
Awesome film.
Another great Dicaprio movie is "Catch Me if You Can". Very funny, emotional, and extremely entertaining. All-star cast too.
This was a fantastic reaction video!! You guys should do more "who done its" It was so fun watching you constantly guess what was going on. I recommend "Gothika" its a movie that takes place in a women's asylum for criminal insane and there is a mystery and twists and turns. Also "What Lies Beneath" another good edge of your seat, mysterious movie.
