Brilliant work - saved me the price of a new lawn mower - thought that this honda would never go again ...... the fact that you went into so much detail about stripping it down - I thought I would just give it a go. Much to my surprise .... there were a couple of things stopping it working - 1 ... the air filter was clogged as one of the plastic tabs had broken letting rubbish grass get into it. 2 ... the spark plug was covered in carbon - so a good clean of that ... I did strip the carb down .... but the jet would not come out - so I just blew through it ... must have cleared anything that was in there ..... any way - it all works fine now. Cheers ....and a Big Thank you ......... from me .
Just followed along and got my carb out, cleaned and back in with little to no effort thanks to your video - fired right up after giving the carb a little TLC. If you don't have cleaning brushes for the jets a few strands of copper from a speaker cable worked for me... not ideal, but did the job on the top jet. Thanks!

Headphone warning around 2:37. I need to do this to mine. I bought an old Honda HRC216 K1 commercial mower second hand from a friend. It runs like garbage. Funny though it still starts on the first pull like all the advertisements 😂. The problem isn’t starting it, it’s keeping it running. I have to let it warm up for about a week before I can engage the blade without it stalling out. After that it does pretty good. Might need a valve adjustment too which looks pretty simple. Carb looks pretty similar but what sucks is the fuel shutoff is actually part of the carb. So I can’t just shut the fuel off and take the carb off without spilling gas everywhere. I’ve got an old shutoff valve hanging around that will hopefully fit on the hose. I used to soak motorcycle carbs in pinesol over night and then blew them out. That worked pretty good too.
When there's no shutoff I usually use a pair of needle nose vise grips and crimp the fuel line shut. Yes, I'm not convinced of a carb problem with what you've described there. Do you have a compression gauge? Might check that and see if it's low.. If so, it could be valves. I don't remember if the rocker arms were adjustable, so hopefully they are. I wouldn't discount the carburetor all together, but it doesn't sound like my first guess.

I don't see anything wrong with Gumout cleaner...Without the air?... It is kinda necessary,.. maybe go to Best Buy and get a can of the compressed air for cleaning computers? They usually come with a straw.. it's not as much pressure as a air compressor, but it'll probably still work fine.. spray the carb cleaner in first, and follow behind with the air... hope this helps..
I did the exact same repair. Gas flooded out of the carburetor at first before starting. Cleaned it up, started up on three pulls. Mows with no problem but doesn't stay running at reduced idle speed. Are there any adjustments to be made on the carb screws? Good video. One suggestion, clean the carb area before disassembly.
philipfm Thanks for the input... I don't think there's much adjustment on that one.. but I don't have one sitting in front of me... but if the carb is flooding out the needle may be leaking into the carb and possibly the oil... could that be what's going on?
Take the carb off and pull out the 2 brass screws on top. under the large one the piolet jet is under there clean it out n it will be fine just did the same to mine with the same symptoms
"carburetor doesn't look that bad" .... Exactly why I'm switching to a battery operated mower. I'm tired of breaking down the carb almost every season.
Two questions. Do you use the store bought gas that has no ethanol in it? Also if I start the mower and let it run until it stops (after the season is over) does that run all the gas out of the carb and bowl?
HI David,... I don't buy the gas from Lowes for example because they are just crazy at $20 for a gallon can of it. I have a local gas station that sells ethanol free gas. If you have something like that available to you, then by all means get that. If not, I use the blue star tron stable. If you have a Honda there's usually a screw in the bottom of the bowl that can be removed so you can drain the bowl. If you have a gas cut off valve cut off the gas, then run the mower until it quits... but it still doesn't empty the bowl. You can remove that screw and drain the rest of it. The best way is no gas at all in the system. Also, if you have a local small airport, they might sell you 100LL AV fuel in a 5 gallon can, that would be a great alternative to automotive fuel at the pump.. Hope this has helped... thanks... :-)
New Honda carb is under $20. At boats.net for most of their small engines and can be swapped in about 15 min. Hardly worth messing with a carb and definitely not worth taking it to a shop. Local honda dealer wanted $130. + Tx for the carb. Plus labor $45. / Hr . Madness !!!
Yeah well, pulling out the pilot jet is all well and good, but why not go the next step and pull out the emulsion tube behind it. The fuel ports are so tiny, they could use a least a quick purge. Plus...filter your gas with a paper paint strainer. And use at least premium gas, or better yet, gas with no ethanol.
I did a updated video on this... ruclips.net/video/u_edeuxc4k0/видео.html... I agree with the gas with no ethanol.. I want to go down to the local airport and see if they'll sell me 5 gallons of AV gas....
can you have the same no start problem if the spark plug was unplugged? Or the fuel shutoff valve was off? Or the ignition coil were bad? You determined that the problem was the carburetor without discussing or sharing with us how you deduced that. What did you check & why so we can understand your troubleshooting techniques and processes.
spacecowboy98 I deduced the carb was the problem because I took one look and smell in the gas tank and saw that it had been sitting for a long period of time...I actually did say this in the beginning of the video about the fuel
Im not very mechanically inclined which will be obvious from my question, but my ratchet set does not have one that fits the bolts to take it off the lawn mower. What kind/size did you use?
nick gilbert hi Nick... I really don't remember,.. that's been a while ago ,.. but more than likely it's metric.. probably in the neighborhood of 10 MM.. of course it varies depending upon which bolts your trying to take off
It's probably not to good for it. Look into the low speed jet in the carb, it may be clogged or needs to be drilled slightly bigger.. If you google that you should find some info on it..
@@johncollins8304 Not sure who said stuck emulsion tube, but if it sits long enough, it could get stuck with all the goo that'll be in the carburetor.. 😂
Hello, My mower stopped while mowing due to low fuel. And the it doesn't start so far even though I filled gas. I did followings for my not starting Honda engine mower. 1.replaced ignition plug and confirmed ignition works well. So no problem with ignition coil. 2.cleaned the carburetor twice following instruction. 3.Confirmed fuel is provided into the carburetor well. 4.replaced all gaskets around carburetor. 5.replaced air filter. 6.provided fresh gas. But my mower is not still work. If I installed the air filter, I cannot feel anything from the engine, but if the filter is removed the engine works two or three times irregularly and then stop. I can see backfire at that time. I bought the new Husqvarna mower just two years ago. Could you tell me what I can try to do anymore? Thanks.
Well if you didn't hit anything, then this is very unlikely,... the reason i suggested it is because of the backfiring.. that's usually a timing issue,.. but to check the timing,.. you would have to take off the top cover and the nut that's on the flywheel so you can see the keyway,.. if it's still lined up then it's ok... I do have a video on this issue, but it's a briggs engine,.. but the principal is the same..
I found one 5 yrs ago was so heavy could not get it on the truck ,all pure aluminum ,cleaned the bowl and it start always the first pull.Wash it every time i am finished.
same exact mower as the one in this video, but my carb starts leaking about 5 seconds after turning the fuel valve open, then when I try and start it, it revs super high and then dies. Any Ideas?
well if it's leaking out of the carb where the choke is.. you know, where the air intake goes in,.. you've probably got a needle and seat leaking.. if it's leaking around where the bowl mates with the carb body,.. it's probably the bowl gasket... the reving super high? Not sure on that one,.. i'd almost have to see it..
Well I will follow your steps by cleaning the carb and order some replacement gaskets. If it continues to rev up, perhaps I could take a video and send it to you?
I was filling gas in my honda ready to cut grass for the spring and noticed gas dripping from the gas line by the carburetor. Was not sure why or if the cable loosened as the carb.
It's hard to tell where it's coming from. Check the air cleaner to see if it's soaked with gas.. if it is, it's coming from the needle and seat in the carburetor.... It could be a cracked fuel line, it could be a leaking gasket at the top of the bowl or from the bowl screw... etc...
@@JLPicard440 i checked carefully and saw the clamp was missing on the fuel line by the carburetor. I couple of years ago i gave my mover to Home Depot to do the regular maintenance and oops they missed a clamp. Surprising there was no immediate leak. They charge $70 but did a crappy job.
Replaced new carburetor, new spark plug, new, air filter but my GCV160 still has backfire. I am using non ethanol fuel. Any advice to fix backfire? Thanks.
Actually when you do that, it still leaves a little bit of fuel in the bottom of the bowl which can rust it out. That drain screw doesn't really require any fishing, it's usually facing the front (the head side) and is easy to get to.
Could be it's still dirty? Did you flush out the gas tank? Sometimes there's water in the fuel or some contaminant that gets back into your newly cleaned carb...

Did it run shortly before that or has it been sitting? Was it in the sunlight all day? It could have developed condensation in the gas tank... ? I can try to help, but might need more info. BTW, I think Matthew 24 is coming on us shortly.. 😀
dick sdan it goes back in no problem... a lot of times u don't need the ez out... just tap the carb and it'll come out... I have a newer video on this carb... but sometimes they are very stubborn and I just use the ez out to have a way to grip it and guide it out... hope this helps... thanks
Did you remove the emulsion tube? When you remove the jet from the carburetor, there's another brass tube in the middle. Is the gas contaminated with water?
@@JLPicard440 I just took out the jet didn't notice the tube,I'll check again, how about the gas should you put the high octane gas in,the good gas or regular unleaded.
@@RC-jr8fi You can use regular unleaded, but if you have a gas station near by that sells ethanol free I like to use that. But it's not required. If your mower has been sitting for any length of time, I would definitely drain the gas into something and flush the gas tank out with a water hose, then of course let it dry out in the sun so you don't wind up putting water in with the gas..

Brake cleaner works just as well!
Yes those are getting much better with the better batteries nowadays..
Thanks for posting. Good stuff.
You're welcome!
thank you buddy, this was a big help.
You're welcome!
Hope this has helped... thanks... :-)
thanks for made that video make Its more clearly
what's that thin wire you used to poke the holes open? is that something you can get on Amazon or hardware store?
It's just a torch head cleaning tool... comes with several size wires on it. yes, I'm sure Amazon will have it.
Welding torch tip cleaners do .5mm and .3mm ( main and pilot jet)
There are 6 tiny (smaller than the smallest torch tip cleaning tool) that you overlooked...I used a bristle from a brass wire brush for those.
Can I take the bottom part of the carburetor off and spray carburetor cleaner will that work
It depends on how much goop is in the carburetor. Sometimes it'll work if its just really mild.
Excellent video, Thank You!
Thank U!
Thank you sir. About to fix mine now
Excellent! Good Luck
Great video if doing half a clean job gets your mower running. This one must have just had ick or water in the bowl.
That's all it was... I have a newer video that shows more detail
New Honda carb is under $20. At boats.net for most of their small engines and can be swapped in about 15 min. Hardly worth messing with a carb and definitely not worth taking it to a shop. Local honda dealer wanted $130. + Tx for the carb. Plus labor $45. / Hr . Madness !!!
jer prime thanks for the tip!
@@JLPicard440 thanks will check that out. Hope ing someone has a STUCK emulsion tube!
@@johncollins8304 I think I responded to your other comment..
can you have the same no start problem if the spark plug was unplugged?
I really don't remember,.. that's been a while ago ,.. but more than likely it's metric.. probably in the neighborhood of 10 MM.. of course it varies depending upon which bolts your trying to take off
Thanks for the video and the reply! It was posted long enough ago that i did not expect anything back when i commented, let alone within a few hours!
even the master mechanics were once wet behind the ears. keep tinkering with the mechanical stuff and you too will one day be a master.
Mine runs but later it surges and backfires do you think this would give issues?
It's probably not to good for it. Look into the low speed jet in the carb, it may be clogged or needs to be drilled slightly bigger.. If you google that you should find some info on it..
Might be good to clean the diffuser above the main jet? And the pilot jet and pilot screw? ... when its apart.
Yes your right.
@@JLPicard440 Yes, he's right but no-one has a really STUCK emulsion tube.
Thanks.
If it's backfiring, there could be a timing issue.. did you hit anything in the yard?? It could jolt the flywheel out of time.. just a possibility ..
if there is timing issue, could you recommend what I have to do?
Well if you didn't hit anything, then this is very unlikely,... the reason i suggested it is because of the backfiring.. that's usually a timing issue,.. but to check the timing,.. you would have to take off the top cover and the nut that's on the flywheel so you can see the keyway,.. if it's still lined up then it's ok... I do have a video on this issue, but it's a briggs engine,.. but the principal is the same..
Thank you for your tip.
Thank you for your answer, if there is nothing wrong with the flywheel key what can I do now? Thanks again.
Where did that tiny needle come from? Mine just fell out when I took the carb off and I didn't see where it came from.
Are you taking about the pin that holds the float on?
@@JLPicard440 I finally found it. Thanks!
@@terrilhargrovejones Oh great! Glad you got it going..
thank you I will try it looks good info
Thanks.
You're welcome.. :-)
Thanks brother
Any time
I found one 5 yrs ago was so heavy could not get it on the truck ,all pure aluminum ,cleaned the bowl and it start always the first pull.Wash it every time i am finished.
Oh wow! I've seen those... Didn't think it would be that heavy! 😂
Cool! Thanks man.
Excellent!... Thanks... :_)
Do you happen to know of any other mowers that use honda engines or clones?
8Jory yes a lot of them do.... Troy built does and a few others I can't think of this minute... but yes they're out there
same exact mower as the one in this video, but my carb starts leaking about 5 seconds after turning the fuel valve open, then when I try and start it, it revs super high and then dies. Any Ideas?
well if it's leaking out of the carb where the choke is.. you know, where the air intake goes in,.. you've probably got a needle and seat leaking.. if it's leaking around where the bowl mates with the carb body,.. it's probably the bowl gasket... the reving super high? Not sure on that one,.. i'd almost have to see it..
Well I will follow your steps by cleaning the carb and order some replacement gaskets. If it continues to rev up, perhaps I could take a video and send it to you?
Sure,.. that's ok..
Very good... sounds like a easy fix... :-)
Thanks helpful !
You're Welcome 😎😎
Replaced new carburetor, new spark plug, new, air filter but my GCV160 still has backfire. I am using non ethanol fuel. Any advice to fix backfire? Thanks.
If u hit anything in yard check out the timing at the flywheel key.... if not that's a good one with a new carb already
Turn off the fuel shut off and let it run the carb dry. Easier than fishing around for that drain screw.
Actually when you do that, it still leaves a little bit of fuel in the bottom of the bowl which can rust it out. That drain screw doesn't really require any fishing, it's usually facing the front (the head side) and is easy to get to.
Thank you
No Problem 😀
I can't even get the bolts out behind the air filter. They seem to be an irregular size; too big for a 3/8 and too small for a 7/16.
I think you mentioned it's metric that explains it...
They're metric... 10MM if I remember
I have a guestion I have a push mower I cleaned the card.. it idle but want idle up
Could be it's still dirty? Did you flush out the gas tank? Sometimes there's water in the fuel or some contaminant that gets back into your newly cleaned carb...
Why bother? A new carburetor is around $12!!!
Yes, I know, but I'm very cheap! :-)
Take a Bath Productions ok then I’m guess and I’m lazy ;-)
Me too, cheap and lazy!!!
What's that knockin' ?
Old fuel from before Winter
My mower is surging. I changed the carb and it's STILL surging. Any ideas?
Could be water in the fuel, a blockage in the fuel line, a blockage in the fuel filter, or something wrong with the fuel cap (not venting).
Good information but camera work is to far from it to see and is shot over the dark ground instead of the cardboard
Sorry about that.. I did a newer video. If there's a way to search my channel for Honda it should come up as a more recent video.
Appreciate the info, but couldn’t see what you were doing half the time. Helpful though.
Mark Spangler I did a newer version of this carb.... check that one out and see if it’s any better.... thanks
my fathers is a 2002 and still going strong a friend of his gave him the mower probably sat out side for some years took her home tried to start her, changed the spark plug away she started, so replaced the grass box strengthening bar gave the box a clean, replaced the drive gear box and cable and belt, new oil new spark plug new filter and fresh fuel, cut the grass with her today brilliant job she done, running stronger then ever

Use non-ethanol gas and the carb won't clog up
I do! That mower wasn't mine... 😀. Thank you for the info...
Thanks. Get a bench though :)
877cms your welcome! Sometimes I just like being outside 🙂🙂... I am usually on the bench in most of my other vids...
The problem is checking the ili in all those lawnmowers ,first
What's an ili?
Interesting video but i would need to be working in cleaner conditions not in my garden
Ok thanks!
Wax cartridge?
Yes, I replied on your other questions..
Left mine out for 1 night. Didn't rain or anything. Changed sparkplug and air filter, still won't run 🤦.
Did it run shortly before that or has it been sitting? Was it in the sunlight all day? It could have developed condensation in the gas tank... ? I can try to help, but might need more info. BTW, I think Matthew 24 is coming on us shortly.. 😀
@@JLPicard440 I emptied gas tank also. I'm thinking I'll have to clean out carburetor?
@@JLPicard440 maybe blow out gas tank and clean thoroughly? Idk
@@Ephesians28n9 Yes I definitely would do that..and also make sure to clear out the fuel line in case there's any junk in there too...

Have my Honda GCV160 on a splitter,I did that still starts up and dies, any ideas, thanks...
@@JLPicard440 usually sits a week or two then I use it on the weekend, not for a lengthy of time.
@@RC-jr8fi OIC, that's not long enough to cause any trouble with the gas gelling up.
