    I’m happy to finally see that someone besides Roy Underhill knows how to build a real hand cut half dovetail notch and build a cabin in the old tradition!! I have a Woodmizer 40HD and have been wanting to build one myself!! Great Job Thank you for carrying on the long lost trade!! Wish you were closer to Western Kentucky I would love to work with you on a project!!

    You work the closest in measure I have ever seen.to some one who calls himself a carpenter. Without any better for words of praise that I can think of rite now. You are a master Carpenter. I worked in a machine shop going on to 15 years so I worked in thousand of an inch so I know measure. First 7 years was in a production shop tolerance +/- .005 then i moved to an oil field shop where fitting bearings to shafts tolerances was .0001 / .0002 that's in 1/10 thousands of an inch.
    You explain how to do your work very well. Problem ...how n what to look for n then fix. I really like your videos. Great job.

    Dear Sir, greetings. I did not understand why was it necessary to use that small block on 4AL to check whether it is in line with the sill log, since you had already checked that by placing your 2 feet level along the inside face of 4AL? Do the two techniques give different results? Secondly, did you nail the string on the floor plyboards 3 inches inside the sill logs on all four sides, or did I hear you wrong? To the naked eye, the string looked like an inch or an inch and a half away from the inside face of the sills. Regards.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 года назад

      AS Howdy AS- the small block is 6” long which is the thickness of the logs. By placing the level on it and checking for plumb will show how much wood needs to be shaved off either the inside or outside to make the log sit plumb on the wall. It gives me a more accurate way of knowing what I need to do to make it plumb. The strings on the floor are 3” in from the inside face of the sill logs and are held by a small nail. Sometimes the videos are a bit deceptive on the depth perception. Thank you for the questions- l hope l was able to clarify for you. God bless you

    Good day to u sir, and greetings from South Africa. I have one question : Why do u not install the door frame / window frame at this stage in order to line up the logs from the corner to the door frame / window frame? Hugs and stay safe.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 года назад +1

      Annette Zang Howdy Annette- Thank you so much for watching the video and you have a really good question. I have put in a temporary jamb to keep the logs in line but on this little cabin it really wasn’t necessary because the weight of the logs pretty much keep them where they are without them moving. After the log that goes over the door and windows is up I cut a groove for angle iron to fit in the end of the logs that make up an opening which keeps it all lined up. Hope y’all are doing well in Africa. Stay safe and God bless you

  • @JF-fx2qv
    @JF-fx2qv 4 года назад

    The detail explanation is greatly appreciated. Thank you. So how will you keep all the fine adjustment is its place while continuing on in the work, or will it hold its own and stay put? I assume when the time come the hoist will be taken apart to remove it from the cabin?

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 года назад +1

      J F Howdy JF, the weight of the logs will keep them where I need them to be. After the header logs go up l will be putting angle iron in all the openings which will keep the logs from moving at the openings. The angle iron slides up into the header log and fits in a kerf in the ends of the logs. While the log is on the sawhorses l will cut a slot in them to accept the iron. When I get the second floor joists up l will take the hoist apart and put a shorter one on the second floor. God bless you

    Great video, thanks for teaching people how to build beautiful cabins. technical question .
    you build a small cabin and the logs are connected only in the corners, and if you build a cabin 20 * 30 feet in size will there be no sagging of the logs in the middle because they hang in the air in this place? Do I need to connect the logs in any other way to each other for greater stability such as dowels?

    What keeps the logs from twisting along the wall without using dovels?

      Alvar Lipp Howdy Alvar- the openings will have 2x3x1/4” angle iron fit in a kerf in the ends of the logs which is slotted into the header log and into the bottom log of the opening. The notch holds the log at the corners. Thank you for your question. God bless you

      @@TheBeardedCarpenter The wood you are using must be more stable than what i have used around here. I use mostly pine and spruce. Was taught to pegg the logs together in a scattered way every 50cm. That holds them straight . I have seen them twist even from the middle with years past when its not pegged together properly. Even notches dont hold on some logs. With dovetail we have used long metal rods drilled into the corners to hold. Saddle notch and norwegian notch hold a bit better. Usually avoid left twisting logs completely. Its great to see so vastly different technique of log building to what we do here in Eastern and Northern Europe. That wooden lift inside the house is genius! Thank you for responding! God bless you too!

      Alvar Lipp It’s always exciting to hear from another log builder! Thank you so much for your interest. I am building with southern yellow pine which we have in abundance here. It is used in conventional house building mainly because of the availability and the strength it has. I too, try to avoid left hand twist, but occasionally you have to deal with it. Yellow pine is a heavy ( weight) wood and will, for the most part, stay put. I would say that white pine would be a little more stable but it isn’t available here where we live so l use what we have as did the pioneers who settled this area back in the 1800’s. I love the looks of round log buildings but I am pretty much a tradionalist with the hewn log, dovetail corners. We have lived in our house 25years now and none of the logs did anything other than the expected setting which l allow for- screw jacks, angle iron in the openings, and the way I frame the interior walls. I would love to see the buildings you do. I ‘ve always admired the European log builders. God bless and keep you safe

      @@TheBeardedCarpenter The buildings you have built look cozy and straight. Very good quality craftsmanship. Here we have always thought about how Americans build with clay between the logs. I have never used this method but im hoping i get to try it out on a project. My great grandfather built hand hewn loghouses also that was a tough job. We use sawmills on the square log houses and notch everything with a chainsaw. Alot of ppl here prefer the traditional dovetail and norwegian notches. But i personally have always liked the round saddle notch more. I have been lucky to have been able to build all of the common notches. I am very thankful to God for giving me this passion that kept me busy so had no time to mess around haha. It is good there is so many ways to choose from when building a loghouse. We use the scribe method on all the notches thats where the difference comes in. I have built houses under companies for 14 years and i have always had my heart in it. Always wanted to learn more. Im happy that i found your channel and i will look thru your series gladly. You have a lifetime of experience ppl will benefit from definetly. I only have some old phone camera footage of me carving a saddle log. Have never thought about making videos of my technique. Maybe one day i will. But i have always made photos of my work. I would also use more hand tools if we were not rushed so much. Building for a company rushes things and would go bankrupt fast with hand tools. The rush we are in this world is bad not enough time to fully enjoy the builds.

      Alvar Lipp I do certainly appreciate your philosophy on log building. I do use chainsaws and power tools in building but to have an old tool in my hands is very therapeutic for me. I feel like l can get my joinery much closer by finishing up the notch with hand tools. I ‘m thankful for the modern tools and I do take advantage of them. If our forefathers had them they would certainly have used them. It’s so good to hear from you and I would like to stay in contact. I ‘m sure you have lots you could teach me. I certainly am not the best but I do have the same passion you do, so that makes us of a kindred spirit. May God bless all of your endeavors
