Its amazing how much work goes into a building like that amd to see big houses done that way or even rail road ties that were done with a broad axe and how much work went into them. Amazing job!! Thanks for the video! STAY SAFE!!
307 J.O.A.T Howdy Travis, Yeah, there’s a lot of work goes into it. Those old timers knew what hard work was. God bless y’all

salamat sa pag share ng info
tsikot39 Howdy- thank you for watching. God bless you
like the idea of leaning the log back a little...what is a "slick?"
WORM GITTER Howdy Mr. Duke, hope y’all are doing well down there. I appreciate you watching the videos. A slick is just a big ol chisel with a long handle made for paring wood. Some of the videos show me using one. There gettin harder to find if you’re lookin for an old one. Both of mine were restored and retempered. I turned the handles out of black walnut that came out of a log house. Ya’ll take care and God’s blessings rest on y’all
Paul, could you apply Anchorseal to the dovetail joints where the top log sits on the lower log?
I know it's not needed but could it be used to seal that area from water?
Your cabin looks amazing.
Thank you Sir for the documentary of a hand hewn log cabin build.
Howdy Tim- yes, I do coat the upper and lower notches which helps protect the notch. I also coat a pocket that will receive the tenon of a timber. Thank you for watching. God bless you
Nice axe work! Have you ever tried a lighter weight European style hewing axe? Do you prefer the heavier American style hewing axe?
Refiner's Forge Howdy Brother, I have always used the heavier axes. The one I was using is an English style axe. I reworked the back of it like an American axe and had it retempered. I never had an axe like the Europeans use. I worked a little bit with a feller who had one and he really liked it. After using the heavier axes his seemed real light. God bless y’all
What do you paint the joints with?.
What is this substance?
Howdy y’all/ I’m using a product called Anchorseal. It a water based parrafin. God bless
Is the hewing just for the looks or does it server some other purpose?
Howdy Chuck- I like the look of hewn logs. Hewing the logs has a tendency to close up the wood and gets rid of the sawmill marks. God bless
Great video Paul, the cabin is coming together really nice. About how long do you have to wait before chinking with the green logs to account for shrinkage?
mm h Howdy- thank you for watching the video! I like to let them settle for a year before chinking. During that time other aspects of the building can be done. God bless you
Paul, if I may ask: is this hewing (3:58) done for the looks of the log only? Or has it got another purpose, that at this moment eludes me? And same question for the axe marks you made earlier?
Love this series, by the way, have been binge watching from episode one!
Howdy- I score ( the vertical axe marks) and hew the logs to remove the circular saw marks and put the hewn finish on the logs. I sure appreciate you watching the videos. God bless you
@@TheBeardedCarpenter Is a hewn finished log more resistant to rot/bugs over the the years, since it is smoother than a rough finished one?
But why do you do the the scoring first, Paul, that is still not clear to me. It leaves small cracks in the log which, as I assume, is a place for water of bugs to creep into and do damage to the logs?
I believe The Outsider or Shawn James (both log builders on youtube) referred to your youtube channel. I love your work ethic and admire your skills!
Keep up the good work, Paul!
The score marks aren’t very deep and when I hew the saw marks they are even shallower. Since the surface is hewn smooth there is less chance for moisture to soak in. I put a good overhang on the roof and keep the logs high enough off the ground to protect them from rain splatters. Blessings
@@TheBeardedCarpenter Thanks for explaining! I'm halfway the series so I have a lot of catching up to do. Can't wait to see the progress!
How thick should you mill your logs? Thanks
Howdy- these logs are six inches thick which is sort of a traditional thickness. I’ve worked logs that were eight inches thick but they were a lot bigger logs. The bigger the logs the thicker I like them for proportional looks. Take care and God’s blessings to you
6:00 what's the purpose of the scoring and the hewing? ornamental mainly?
Howdy Bobby- good question. I like the logs to have an authentic look and I achieve that by using the same tools that were used when logs were hewn out of the round. Hewing off the sawmill marks closed the grain somewhat and helps against weathering. Thank you for watching our video. God bless
@@TheBeardedCarpenter Thanks for the reply. I was directed over here from TheOutsider's channel. He and his dad built that nice cabin. I loved his style of video where there's no music and very little talking but I also appreciate how you share how to execute the details of this kind of work. Im a tool guy at heart and I love the giant circular saw and the big slick chisel. I want one of those slicks. :)
@@dizzolve Yes, The Outsider has a beautiful cabin! I watch his videos. Blessings
You have the company of a Barred Owl. Must be near evening time.
That sound you hear on the video is what the old timers used to call a rain crow, actually a ring necked dove.
J F Howdy JF- we have owls around here and they will start their hooting close to dark. I don’t hear very well anymore so I guess I might have missed it. Charles may be right, it could have been what we call
a rain crow. Now I need to go back and watch it with the volume turned up more. God bless you
@@TheBeardedCarpenter Listen at around @8:20, @8:35 @8:48. Many birds are singing , but this one stands out.
☺️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
ZEKİ TAŞER Howdy Zekl- Thank you so much for watching and your support. God bless you
👏👏👏🇺🇾👋👋👋
FOTO MOMENTS Howdy, thank you so much for watching! God bless you
I’ll bet that’s hard on your back.
Howdy Cindy- it’s a bit physical but very therapeutic for me. I guess it’s one of the most favorite things I’ve ever done. Take care and God bless you
@@TheBeardedCarpenter hi, I asked a couple of years ago if you thought a person could buy a few wooded acres and build their own log cabin, is there a place where you can get hands on experience. You said to email you but I never got back to you. My husband and I live in Michigan, what do you think?
@@cindybonem494 I’ve wanted to do some workshops for a long time but haven’t gotten all the logistics worked out. I talked to a fellow in another state last fall and he was willing to sponsor the workshop but hasn’t gotten back to me yet. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get some going soon. I’m trying desperately to get caught up so I can focus more on some things like that. Blessings
@@TheBeardedCarpenter thanks for getting back to me, I’ll keep my eyes open for that workshop.
