    Thank you for all your vocal knowledge! This was such a great video. I have been practicing My screaming vocals for about four years now and I can proudly say that my fry screams sounds good when I’m screaming along to bands like miss May i and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. I also like to scream along with songs that don’t have screaming vocals because it really gives me a chance to hear my voice throughout the song. Your video has been the first one that I’ve watched where a female is giving the tutorial and I love being able to hear the scream from a females voice because it really allows me to examine how well my screams actually sound when they are being compared to a females voice. I still remember the first time i told myself I wanted to scream one day. I was 13 years old listening to fly leaf. ♥️

    One question I've had for a while: would swollen tonsils affect your screaming? It may be just my personal opinion, but I think my fry screaming could be louder. No matter how much I push from my diaphragm, I sometimes struggle with projection.
    Also have an observation that I made on fry screaming: If I bring my chin in or look down, it can reach a point where it sounds like my scream is being choked out. Not sure if that's normal. I can look up, left right, slightly down, but tilting my head straight down and trying to fry scream is a problem

    I’ve been trying to do several different styles of screams for 4 years now and nothing works for me. I’ve done the research, I’ve looked at the anatomy, the breath control, I’ve practiced it all. I tried to do gutturals for a full year out of the 4 years I’ve been trying and don’t have any progress. With Fry screaming I picked it up for about 7 months, gave up, and have been trying again for the past 5, and still am getting nowhere. I’ve tried all sorts of ways but those 2 are the ones I really want to get going, and I’ve not had any success. Anyone that can do it will tell you that it is possible for any person to do it with enough practice, but what the hell does that even mean? I mean months and years of working on it, and nothing at all. It’s bullshit, honestly I don’t think it’s fucking real at this point, I’m genuinely starting to believe it’s a fucking hoax and that it isn’t even possible.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  3 года назад +2

      Did you ever take lessons with anyone during this time? If it is all totally on your own and with videos only you will likely be stuck in the situation you are in. But I find that with lessons and specifics tailored to the individual you can change that a lot. You might just need a good instructor and some individual attention. I assure you it’s not a hoax! I make many of these sounds totally raw in my tutorial videos, and also there isn’t really a plug-in or “effect” that can truly make someone scream or do gutterals if they can’t do them. There’s nothing out there that can make a sound that’s not a scream into a scream. There is some processing to make some sounds more compressed or clip a little for distortion but the person still has to be doing the gutterals in the original recording. So I recommend putting down everything until you can get some one on one lessons and have someone evaluate you individually before you give up! Very sorry to hear of the frustration though!

      @@Astrocreep696 you’ve got to mess around for awhile, sometimes, to find the proper sound. I notice for myself, I like to do so many different “styles”, if that makes sense, that sometimes it can be easy to confuse one with another (but I usually end up noticing).
      Gutterals can be harder for some people, Ive heard. I recommend watching many “how to” videos online, and practicing to bands like Devourment, etc. that fit the style yer lookin for. Honestly, for myself, practice and just watching some how to videos after i already knew how to do a lot helped me get to where i am now. Id say im a well experienced extreme metal vocalist at this point but always want to learn more things and get better for sure.

    My fry sounds so different 😅 is that because I have a high pitch voice? Smaller vocal cords and all that? But even my small 3:30 style one doesn't sound the same, like I'm doing something different from the start, less gurgly(?) or airy idk lol. What really gets me though is how to combine fry with stuff like false cord, and whatever those other tissues are, like what kinda mind trick will help figure that out?

    • @travisfodrie5410
      @travisfodrie5410 3 года назад +1

      Your vocal pitch shouldn't really be a factor in a voiceless scream. The size of your larynx may determine how low you can take a fry, but you can always go false cord for lows if you're not happy with it. Try starting with a vocal fry, as gurgly as you can get, and then push air from your diaphragm, imagining that you're projecting the scream into the roof of your mouth. Correct me if you disagree with anything Mary!

    • @DestroyerMariko
      @DestroyerMariko 3 года назад +2

      @@travisfodrie5410 I'm already good with false cord, it's really only fry that I'm wondering about. I can also already get something of a fry scream but I don't currently consider it useful to me, which is why I'm also curious about how to combine it with other coordinations, like maybe that'll help me get more of the sound I'm after. Just need something else in my toolkit so all my RUclips covers don't have to be tricky adaptations of fry screaming songs done in false cord hahaha (altho I do have fun with that lol). Idk, bit worried my fry will end up only good for In This Moment type stuff. I also tend to lose it once I've warmed up or been false cording a lot, and half the time I sound like a thin broken tea kettle! 😂

    • @travisfodrie5410
      @travisfodrie5410 3 года назад +2

      @@DestroyerMariko I checked out a couple of your covers. Nice job on the false cords! Meant no disrespect about the projection comment before. You clearly already know how to do it!
      Mary really helped me drive my low fry in a lesson during a time that I had hit a wall. All I can really say is that when I'm happy with the sound of my fry, I feel significant vibration from the top of my throat to the back of my teeth. The mental image I get is like I'm pushing a ball of static with my airflow and keeping it from escaping with my teeth. It's working very well for low fry, but I'm still working on holding it when I change my tone placement to higher tones. Hope this helps.

    • @DestroyerMariko
      @DestroyerMariko 3 года назад +1

      @@travisfodrie5410 Oh thanks so much for checking out my stuff! ^_^ No worries, just thought I should give more context. Hmm, I definitely don't get that vibration you're talking about when I fry, and when I try to push more air I tend to end up coughing, or accidentally switch to false cord lol. Seems like the key I need is very hard to explain, had one guy even demonstrate the exact switch I need to make, but what he said about doing it made zero sense to me lol. I probably do need lessons but my timezone never matches up 😭

    • @travisfodrie5410
      @travisfodrie5410 3 года назад

      @@DestroyerMariko Funny thing is that I had the same issue with false cord reverting back to fry for a while! I think it's because I started with fry and it's just what I got used to. When I get choked up from fry, it's usually because I still have too much voice in it. Mary taught me some good vocal stretches to help loosen everything up and it's done wonders for making it come out voiceless! Once I reached that point, I found it easier to experiment outside of my comfort zone to see what works a little better for me.

    One thing that I want to get better on is to take away more of the natural pitch in my false cord screaming, I do the right thing (I think at least) I only make the white noice and and do full on distortion without voice in it. But it still sounds a little bit pitched for some reason and it kinda annoys me. I want my screams to sound more “dry” if that makes sense....and because of that it’s not sounding that good, I have kinda moved over to make more fry screams, but I want to be able to like the sound of both when I do them, what should I do?

    • @Berganon
      @Berganon 3 года назад +1

      Maybe you can experiment with extreme tongue placements (curled back, pushing against lower teeth and forward,etc ), that will give a different color to your sound, as she said, Pitch is still gonna be present in the screams, and that matters a lot.
