      Ok, here's what I do:
      First, you gotta know that it is easier to learn screaming when your are also singing the normal way, because you can start slowly to build up strength in the breathing and vocal areas. Screaming is not just about figuring the technique out and then you can do it forever. It is very dependent on your breathing and vocal muscles, so if your don't sing or shout for 2-3 days after practicing for a week, your will feel that you're weaker (yes, it decreases that fast). When I started singing, some time after a failed attempt at shouting, I liked loud country, songwriter stuff like Against Me!. So I would always sing very loud. Learning how to sing very loud, without hurting the voice, wich is much easier, helped me gain strength and control over my singing organs and stuff.
      Then I started to sing very airy, with a lot of work in the diaphragm and less pressure from the vocal chords (like Tom Waits in Jockey Full of Bourbon). After a while, when I would sing this way very loud, it started to distort by itself. I had like 1/10 pressure on the vocal chords but let out so much air with every word, that the false chords just started to vibrate, but I had no control over the false chords. I can't press my throat down in any way to tighten my false chords, there is really close to no pressure on the throat involved. Imagine it like overdriving a Guitar signal. You don't do that by compressing, you do that by boosting the signal and the boost is your airflow from your diaphragm. Also I found that singing very low was easier for me to get into distortion mode and it helps me to train my singing muscles harder. I tuned my guitar a whole step down and play and sing everything in D standard now.

    I took your advice on using air support, but I live in an apartment and think the airstrike hit my neighbors instead. I'm also being questioned by the FBI, so I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong?

      Hey friend, If you're worried or feeling like "screaming" is somewhat of a "man's world," and others will think less of you for doing so, let me assure you some of the best vocalists I've heard in the metal genres are females and I have never met someone who thought any less of a woman who screams (in fact, i've heard only positive remarks in this regard). Some great examples (and some of my favorite bands) are Walls of Jericho, Arch Enemy (both previous and current vocalists), and Kittie. Get out there and do what you love! Forget the rest of them who want to make you feel less than for whatever reason. If you're loving it, keep doin it! ^_^

    I finally did a freaking long comfortable fry scream!! I'm having vocal scream lessons of someone and I learn a lot from her, but this sure is a very clear instruction. I found out that I can fry scream much more easily then false chord. Even tho the practice went 60/50 tho. at the end the was a bit of voice which cracked up the sound but still a difference!
    Thanks for adressing this whole posterior and how the abdomens get their tention, cuz it was hard for me to find out how to stock of the breath support.

    When I started screaming 2006 or so we hardly had good tutorials like this on YT. Most of us had to figure things for ourselves and many good voices were lost along the way. Listen to Mary, people and play the long game. You need to build a good base to build decades of expertise on. Stay brutal and experiment with caution ;)

    Very helpful video! This week I just started screaming for my cousins bands and I sounded pretty good at first but I had zero technique and I completely screwed my voice. It didnt sound bad kind of like alpha wolf. But I started doing these exercises and they actually helped me get my voice back! Amazing thank you!

    Question: what is the reccomended amount of practice daily? I magically got them right ((assuming because my shoulders didn't budge)) but i practice at night and yeah , i can't do more than breathing exercises , unless i want the neighbours to call the cops on me for demonizing myself at 3 am.

    Hey Mary, i started 6 weeks ago with building up my diafram and now i am even able to cover songs I love. Nothing hurts. Spend a lot of time to find and use the natural distortion for false chord. Today I involved your breathing and yoga thing and it opened new worlds for me. Wow. So much comfort.     If you are having trouble finding your diaphragm, and trouble with breathing in general, try this exercise I would use on my trumpet students. Breathe in and out, while thinking about the following syllables: "e," "ah," "oh," and "oo." Especially when you get to "oo," you will notice that your stomach sticks OUT when you breath in. THAT'S the type of breathing you want. Then try the "hoo" sound she used to push the air out in short bursts. When you do so, you should feel this muscle in your core tightening up. If you are STILL having trouble, think of the "oo" syllable and cough. Congratulations, you found your diaphragm.
    Always keep in mind this is the ONLY muscle you should use... everything else is as relaxed as possible. If you are doing anything and start to tighten up, immediately stop, take a moment, and start back from the breathing exercises again. From there build back up to a scream. I know that seems frustrating, but if you always stop yourself and go back to the fundamentals, this will become second nature and prevent you from hurting yourself. Happy screaming.

    Oh my god, I feel so dumb. The reason my screams hurt and sounded so lifeless was because my posture was that of a goddamn gremlin. I even knew before this video that posture is important and yet I somehow managed to forget.

    about time i find a nice video for my screaming. i have a deep voice so its not hard to achieve low notes but it was the distortion that i wasnt doing good. also do you have high pitch singing lessons for those with deep voice ? its really hard for me to do. its hard for me to do and my favorite vocalist is Bruce Dickinson.

      I think simply cannot, I'm baritone and I just can dream reaching note of singers like Dickinson, Allen etc that are probably natural soprano-tenor, you could reach with falsetto (and lot of practice) but hardly sound powerful like them. But I'm not professional nor a coach so it's just my 2 cents :D

    Fantastic video!!! Really helped me put the pieces together I had always been able to produce an okay scream with somewhat good tone and in tune but it never had any power behind it and was never able to go loud enough to actually be of any use. The diaphragm is a muscle and like all muscles you must exercise it to build strength. These exercises really helped me out thank you so much!!

    What if when I scream, my normal voice never gets hoarse but my falsetto is completely dead?

      yeah, sorry. When I scream, my falsetto becomes very airy and raspy when I try to sing with it. I'm also unable to hit the higher notes I'd usually be able to hit in my falsetto after screaming

      Okay so I'm still not 100% sure if I know what is happening because it's always hard to tell without being in a lesson or hearing in-person. But, to me, it seems like you are probably slamming the vocal cords together and maybe doing something to cause swelling in the vocal cords when screaming. If the cords become swollen due to slamming or not enough breath support or improper sound production then the swelling would certainly make high notes, especially very high falsetto notes, difficult or impossible to hit. To sing high notes, we need to have healthy, non-swollen vocal cords. Swelling thickens the cords which would limit note range significantly. So, be careful and try to work on your breathing and support for your screaming...something is happening to cause hoarseness and that shouldn't really be the case. Try to re-work or re-learn your screaming so that it does not cause this issue. Always stop if something is painful and see a doctor/ENT/Laryngologyst if issues persist.

    i tend to get a headache after singing, screaming for a longer set. do you think that's because i'm not using the correct technique or would you say it's a way of my body to tell me it's enough? might be because of a lack of oxygen? thanks

      Make sure your blood pressure isn't naturally high, consult with your doctor to make sure it's not a blood pressure issue and also make sure you're warming up a lot, your voice and your body it will help dilate the blood vessels and make flow easier, also stretching the neck, face and shoulders to relieve tension before going on stage. And yes, being in good cardio vascular health will help. Although, I do all of these things and have very low blood pressure and still get these headaches when screaming from time to time. I think it's the giant rush of blood to the head that takes place even when we use proper technique. This is why it's so important to warmup and be in shape so we don't burst any blood vessels in our vocal cord or eyes for example. Our bodies can handle it but only if we are prepared physically for the intense work. Also we want to check with our physicians and make sure that our overall blood pressure is low and we're healthy enough to proceed with the physical demands of intense vocalizing. If your overall blood pressure is really high, your doctor may advise against screaming and singing until you get it lowered.

    This is so great and clear - thank you! Will try to do this daily and enjoy the results :) Is it right that in the beginning it's actually kinda tiring to breath in this lifted-fixed sternum fashion, using only the abdomen to 'pump'?

      Bryan Waters yep! It won't be easy at first but over time your abs and back will strengthen. I have gotten even my oldest 60+ students to develop this...it comes gradually

    I know this is an older video, but I did have a related question. I'm sure I have some posture issues I need to work on, but I occasionally feel pain/strain in my lower back opposite my core when doing false chord screams. Any ideas to what the culprit might be? I suspect that I am either continuing to push/strain after my lungs are out of air, or that I'm still a bit inefficient at pushing air this way and am overdoing it. Any suggestions would be welcome!

      She explained in another comment and seems be caused by high blood pressure, if your blood pressure is high; high pitch screams demands more blood go thru the head and causing various symphtoms.

    I have a question in regarding learning this teqnique and maintaining it! I recently learned to fry scream and thought I finally broke that threshold of separating the fry from a more growl sound however I cant seem to get back in that high fry zone again after about 2 weeks of actually doing it, what would u recommend for warmups that may be able to distinguish the high frys from growling?

    How will I know my sternum is lifted? I can’t visualize it, it’s very difficult for me. And my voice just feel like is burning a little after I scream for a while. I’m very confused.

    I'm getting much betting at everything thanks to your help, Mary! Only thing is after a few screams I start to get a bit of a headache?!? Am I doing something wrong or is this natural? Or could it be a sinus issue?

      It's a tension headache! Look up some orthopedic neck stretches or ask a chiropractor to recommend tension relieving stretches...it will help a lot!

    I need advice.. I feel tension and pain in my throat when I'm "hissing"(I can clearly see and feel my diaphragm working but still..)

      it takes years to do it properly, take care of your voice and many recommend not practicing vocal fry for more than 10 mins a day, good luck and have fun:)

    Is it a natural thing to not feel extremely comfortable doing the lifted posture at first? I've only been screaming for 2 and a half months and the vertical posture can get a little uncomfortable.

      _-EvilSkittles-_ id say yes. I think everybody has this problem because of how much we sit, including driving. If you want to strengthen your posture to naturally support itself: try looking into strengthening your core. This doesnt just involve ab work outs, but also a muscle in your back called the Soaz.

    When screamers for the sake of the performance are leaning forward or don't have a straight back, does their screaming get affected by their posture?

      Good Question! So, obviously in my live vids with the bands I'm in, I'm not in a perfect posture like this. It's really meant to be for exercises, learning, warmups and studio. Once you get good at it you can fill the lungs and empty from underneath without the posture. But the posture will teach you to do that. I still do it in warmups to remind my body how to breathe

    What if I take breath from my diaphragm when I scream but after that my cords are still swollen. So am I doing it wrong or just because I don't pratice screaming often? Please response to my question, I need a help. Thank you!

      Swelling isn't good but having some muccus in your throat after a longer session with false chord screaming is relatively normal as the false chords have the task to moist your vocal folds.
      If you get hoarse or your falsetto breaks away or you have problems to get into the normal fry noise, hours after you have screamed, try to rebuild your technique from the beginning. I have to do this pretty oftenly as i have learned many bad behaviours regarding screaming when i began with it (thanks to bands like whitchapel which i wanted to imitate. There is too much pressure and pushing for a beginner to learn a solid technique)

    I can't maintain the false cord more than 2 or 3 seconds... On the other hand i can maintain fry like 25 or 30 seconds. Any advice for me? I've been doing this exercises but i'm not improving on false cord :(
