    Good tutorial. It's nice to see someone knowledgeable talk about a scream that doesn't use the true folds.
    I've been a professional opera singer for about a decade now, so I can't practice any true fold screaming without jeopardizing my actual career lol. I understand that you can scream and rasp with the true folds without damage, but goddamnit if opera at a professional level isn't high stress enough without adding a small chance of wear and tear on the folds. Even a small strain or swelling can mean you don't have the notes, volume, or stamina for a 3 hour long show, which means no paycheck. It's too damn olympian.
    This style I like, and hopefully it'll have no effect on the true folds, or the mechanisms other classical mechanisms. Big LoG, Opeth, Arch Enemy and recently Jinjer fan.

    When trying to scream is there a better technique to prevent my brain from making my throat take over midway? I get maybe 1-3 seconds of proper diaphragm scream before my throat involuntarily takes over and cant seem to shake it no matter how much i try to force my brain to not let it takeover. or am I just going to have to practice twice as much to get it right?

  • @edunogues23
    @edunogues23 7 лет назад +31

    And one last question. Sam Carter (Architects) has a kind of unique scream which has sounds like if it has a clear pitch, and obviously he has a good technique because he has been doing it for a long time,so he would have no voice if he did it incorrectly.
    So is that king of scream achieved by fry or false chords?

    • @nsiepmann

      My gut instinct is that it sounds pretty fry-ish to me - the way it blends with his natural voice and particularly with his high notes, and the tone of the distortion (drier and more white noise-like, rather than the wet, looser kind of tone of false cord - hoping that that description makes sense to anyone other than me...), but I'd love to hear Mary's take on this.

    You really know what you're talking about. Once I watched the regular screaming video, I instantly got it. Been using it for a Disturbed song. My clean singing has improved. Had to go into an ENT Dr for non vocal reason, so I asked her to look at my cords as long as I'm in. I told her i was singing with distortion and screaming.. She said to be careful,, because damage can happen.. She said they look great and super healthy, so I must be doing it right. I don't do this professionally, but once I saw Disturbed sing The Sound of Silence, and I thought it was amazing. My research led me to your video. No doubt your advice is spot on. I'm 57 and not supposed to like this stuff, but Disturbed bridged that gap. I practice every day in the car.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  7 лет назад +9

      Try doing the vowel changes with Fry scream. Gutteral or toilet bowl is usually Low Fry. So, do a fry scream then use the vowel shapes of OOO or UUUU or URRRR and do not press on the tongue. It will just naturally lower the larynx and be much less strenuous with a great sound.

      The trick I learned from watching Melissa Cross interview Philip Labonte is to imagine an egg in your throat, with the fat end towards your vocal cords and the narrow end towards your teeth. This can open up the sound and you can further enhance the tunnel effect by flipping up your tongue towards the roof of your mouth to create a sort of acoustic chamber.

      Yes, it's because your body isn't used to pushing out so much air at once. It is normal to get dizzy when you breathe a lot of air in for some minutes, or the other way around. Just try to take brakes. The more you practice the better it gets. Good luck!

I do believe I can sing rock with distortion and no pain whatsoever, just the normal feelings you described from your other video... I can sing Chris Cornell and Dave Grohl songs, but not the screaming parts... I would like to be able to sing false cord, or fry scream, to the level of Chris Cornell or Dave Grohl... • @wrenchviking8527
    @wrenchviking8527 5 лет назад

    I have developed a form of low gutteral sound that seems to make a lot of use of my soft palate, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. The closest examples I can think of are a mix between Randy Blythe, Dez Farara, and Wayne Static's lows. It's a comfortable technique that I originally formed when hosting D&D games and had to do voices for things like trolls and orcs. I'm trying to learn better false fold and low fry vocals, but this seems to be something else entirely, as it doesn't feel or sound like either of those techniques. Is it unhealthy to make use of my soft palate and surrounding tissue for metal vocals?

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  5 лет назад +1

      Soft palate is a major part of making distorted noises! Totally safe to use providing the sounds accompanying it (with the voice for example) are healthy

  • @Denature1020
    @Denature1020 7 лет назад

    does your tissue have to be lubricated while doing this? I have a tendency to sing/speak while trying the "huhhh"... could it be because I vape?

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  7 лет назад +2

      No, vaping or smoking wouldn't make that action occur. Your vocal cords are just not staying open when that happens so, alternate your false cord attempts with whispers. Sometimes this helps so try saying "huhh" in a whisper then go back to trying "huhhh" false cord. This helps to get the "voice" out of the sound.

    • @Denature1020
      @Denature1020 7 лет назад

      VoiceHacks the whisper exercise helps a lot! I was talking about the bubbling noise used to produce the white noise in fry screaming. I take it the whisper exercise applies across the board? Can you do the white noise / bubbling noise with a dry throat? cuz I sure as hell can't...

I was preparing to sing for a wedding and during the last day of rehearsals, I couldn’t sing- I just lost my singing vocals? It’s been 15 years and I’ve never got them back. how can I get high screams like suicide silence?

    • @irondudeful
      @irondudeful 6 лет назад

      your screaming range is based on your anatomy- your singing range can be extended but your screaming range is not so easy to expand- because you're not using your vocal chords, and you're strictly using the shape of your windpipe/folds/etc. your highs might not be able to reach Mitch Lucker's or Eddie Hermida's- that being said, everyone is different and there's probably a good deal of stuff that you'd be able to do that they cannot.
      until you find your limits, keep working at it though! there's no telling if you could get screams as high or higher than their's!

    I have been false chord screaming for about a year now but am still having trouble with breathing. I tend to get dizzy after a while because of lack of air. Any tips on how I could work on getting more air in and lasting longer? Thank you!

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  6 лет назад

      So this is pretty tough actually and pretty common. But in False Cord, with your vocal folds open, you run out of air quickly and there's only so much you can do. Try my breathing exercises for screamers, and if that doesn't help you may want to adjust your writing style to shorter sentences etc and learn some fry and maybe mix them together.

    I think I do got it but the scratchy sensation you describe feels like too much sometimes like it doesn’t hurt but it tickles so much it feels like it does and I have to stop after a while or maybe idk what I’m doing :)
    Edit: and it makes me cough🤧

    • @Hakorai

      Yes! You can for example push the front of your tongue against your front upper teeth and the back of the tongue more down. Experiment by placing your tongue in every possible position in your mouth

    I’m curious about my false chord scream since I can hold it at a maximum of 4 seconds, and when I try singing at the same time about 3 seconds. Am I doing something very wrong or not? Since Im breathing very slowly before I do it. I also get a bit different voice after I’ve been screaming for a while. Any tips?

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  7 лет назад +3

      TDlolgamer //TrueLG// The vocal cords are open in False Cord so there's nothing regulating the release of air really. All false cord screamers have a short limit on length. Usually 3-4 words per breath that's it. Long screams are generally fry or copy and pasted in pro tools hahah

      I couldn't find the comment where you asked "how do I know if my vocal cords are open or closed?" and that is very tricky because we can't see it and we don't really feel it, but it would be based off of the sound you are making. If they are open, it will sound like my demonstrations of false cord, if they are closed it will sound like my demostrations of fry - good question!

      You're probably just getting a little hyperventilated as you're taking in more oxygen than you're used to. The dizziness should pass if you take a short break and your "tolerance" will increase as you practice your vocal and breathing techniques.

    • @sarahconnor4984

      It happens to me as well and I was wondering if it's because we aren't breathing correctly? Like we let air get out too fast instead of "pushing" it slowly.

    Im trying to learn, i sound like a zombie, and my brothers laughed at me, i feel its not right and there's room for improvement with practice, but i wanna get a little better with it. i first started with trying to say vowels and learn proper breathing. i cant get that extra part. I wanna say its a high scream e. i don't know how to describe it...

    Welp, I messed up. I was doing some false cords, and they were going quite well, but suddenly, my voice got cut off, and I had to stop. We're two days later, and I've been feeling as if I have pharyngitis, but more focussed on my vocal cords. I thought my technique was alright, but apparently, it wasn't... I really hope this is temporary!

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  7 лет назад +3

      TheFrenchTaunter Take it easy! Go on vocal rest (no singing, screaming and minimal speaking) for awhile to reduce swelling and hoarseness. But don't attempt screaming again until you see a medical professional like a laryngologist or ENT specialist to make sure there is nothing wrong and that it is safe to continue. You only get one voice, don't take chances. Make sure that it's healthy and that you consult with a doctor. I am not a medical professional and my advice cannot be substituted for that of a medical professional

Email: VoiceHacks@gmail.com for rates and scheduling. Also maybe try false cord first, then singing with grit then go back to fry. Don't forget the "breathing for screamers " video also! good luck!
