    I currently believe universities are purely for those with the ability to stay constantly focused and WANT to study to continue their career with the degree they try their hardest to earn. There are great people you meet along the way who can definitely help you during university or after, but you avidly must want to continue to learn and not waste your time, knowing full well beforehand what you will be doing with the degree you are working so hard for.

      @@heyramineni I never said education was a waste, I mean that pouring tens of thousands of dollars into a university course for education isn't the best option if your using the degree for a job that wont pay you back well.
      If your ready to spend that kind of money on education sometimes considering other paid sources that allow you to learn by doing such as skillshare, mentors or online courses could allow you to tailor to your weaknesses much better and help you learn what you need to learn in your career's specific field.

    Going to college as a non traditional student it proved to me as a 50+ yo woman that even though I grew up before computers, when girls weren’t encouraged to pursue math or science and flunked out in math as early as elementary school that I CAN DO HARD THINGS. I graduated manga cum laude in Computer Science and see the world so different now.

    Online communities like Discord can be game changers for education. Having top teachers from around the globe collaborating and sharing knowledge with students collaborating.
    I've been going to university for engineering in Western Australia and my first 2 years (2 left woohoo) - I still feel like there isn't enough utilisation of online platforms even after the push from covid. I don't think it will change substantially even with new technologies like AI approaching. Honestly, I feel like right now the best way to learn is to enrol in online courses and put in full attention, while joining online communities that all have a common passion for thier career goal.
    Self driven learning will end up on top so long as you actually are driven IMO

      How do you use discord to support your engineering study? I've been struggled in my engineering degree for a pretty long time

    • @all-round-automation
      @all-round-automation Год назад

      @@chocosherry19 when i fist started uni - some of the in person stuff was still shut from covid. So some students made a discord for first year engineering students, we used it to collaborate on group projects (individual groups to each own channel group vc and text) and just announcements/important dates were put in their own channel.
      Now the server is dead 1 year later lmao - the first year of my degree was to allow us to get a feel for each of the different majors. We started our majors in second year and ever since then the cohort was too fragmented to benefit from the server and we havent been able to get individual servers for individual majors.

    When he mentioned the "own your learning", I remember listening to that concept in grade 10 for the first time and I saw it in action this week. I am a first year in university studying a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television and there is this one class that all Arts students have to take. Throughout the semester I attended almost all my classes and tutorials without knowing exactly what I am learning. I was there to say that "I attended my classes." I had a quiz this Wednesday on the concepts we were learning and it wasn't until Tuesday evening that I realised that attending the classes didn't mean I was learning. I would say I "owned my learning" that evening, finally making the work easier for me by breaking down everything I didn't understand and asking every single question I had. I didn't end up studying everything I needed to for the quiz, but that experience taught me a lot about university: lectures throw knowledge at you at a fast pace. I have to learn to prioritise what is important to complete, attend or understand. And it is up to me how I choose to understand the knowledge. If a lecture doesn't do it, I do it on my own.
    yeah. a lot. but university is fun as Samuel mentioned, learning alongside a group of people with the same interests as you. I think that's why I love my degree so much.

  • @НиколайПавлочев-д1л

    In my opinion, the main task of an university is to teach "to learn". And this already implies the following skills:
    1. Correctly form a hypothesis;
    2. Test it;
    3. Check the results;
    4. Form knowledge.
    Is it possible to do it yourself? Yes, but you will spend much more time on it, both because of the blurring of focus and because of the lack of a mentor. And now the mentor plays a huge role, since he can help you get ahead of those 20% of information sources that will form you as a specialist by 80%. The Pareto rule.

    Well said man, while there is a world of information out there, and if one is only after knowledge, that can be found for free, the community and collaboration that can be found inside the university is absolutely priceless.

    This is spot on. My time as a student is also coming to an end, and I've been having many of the same reflections. Many of my peers struggle to see the point of the institution and yearn to start a full-time job. Your point of 'opportunity for growth' hits home here, something you cannot gather from an online course or practical class. I would add another point; the German term 'Bildung' is a reflection of the formation and cultural maturation to be gathered from knowledge accumulation - this is essential, in my opinion; there is something intrinsically good in learning that builds you up as a person.
    Thank you for the great video!

    Hey there Samuel! First of all I'd like to congratulate you on graduating university soon and for growing as a person through all the tough times at university. As a first year student who just finished first semester and into the second one, things have been a bit more harder and challenging both in life and university, but your words really spoke to me. Having teachers who I feel I don't understand much from, I've been rather complaining but I'll learn to be more curious and own my learning from now.
    Just getting into university, I felt exactly what you described and the company of others in the same phase of life is essential to learn better ngl. I've made so many wonderful friends and we learn and laugh together that I already sometimes fear what will happen when I graduate.
    Thank you for taking the time to make this wonderful video (love the intro song too btw). Really appreciate it

    While there’s a lot of growth to be had in the universitary environment, I also noticed it’s potential to stifle people’s emotional and social growth, if the focus is abstract thinking and theories and knowledge alone. The quest for knowledge can become an escape from really experiencing life and mistaking book knowledge for life knowledge. So yeah, by all means, even when you decide to go to university, enjoy and cultivate your social life and don’t forget to feel and experience some of the best years of your life.

    I want to give you a tip for your lighting setup. I would switch the lightbar from the left with the brighter ball-light on the right. That way (because the ball is brighter) it would give you a nice fill on the right side of your face. This would help you stand out from the background.
