- "In 1971, up and comer Jackson Browne was working on his ‘all important’ debut album, and decided he needed to get out of LA, and take a road trip to visit the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona, to clear his head and discover inspiration for new material. He got as far as Winslow, Arizona, when his old Willys Jeep broke down- stranding him for two days. It could’ve been a frustrating ordeal, but instead, Jackson turned an engine-troubled adventure into an American Rock standard called Take It Easy. With a little help from a future hall of fame buddy named Glenn Frey, who lived upstairs in the same apartment complex, it became the Eagles first huge hit. With one of the greatest opening lines in rock history, as soon as radio played it, the 70s officially kicked off. With the smooth harmonies of the other band members like Don Henley. “Well..I’m a runnin’ down the road, trying to loosen my load, I got 7 women on my mind.” That, oh so familiar opening line of Eagles classic “Take It Easy” sounds so carefree and whimsical. and it’s completely true...The 9 hour trek down Route 66 may have started as a decompression cruise for a then relatively unknown Jackson Browne, the musician that wrote that famous lyric, but it turned into a mechanical nightmare when his 1953 Willys Jeep broke down in the middle of Winslow, Arizona.
1971 was a very exciting year for Jackson Browne, who had just inked a deal with Asylum Records, his manager, David Geffen’s record label, to make his debut album- a watershed achievement for Jackson, who, up to that point, was primarily behind the scenes, away from the spotlight. Jackson had written a number of songs for other artists- such as Greg Allman, Linda Ronstadt, and Joan Baez, but he had yet to establish himself as a solo artist.
Rolling Stone Magazine saw something in the emerging talent, dubbed Jackson the “new face to look for.” It was time for Jackson to break out of anonymity, and vault into the limelight.
The pressure to come up with compelling songs for his debut album overwhelmed Jackson. He spent months working on music, laboring through many sleepless nights. To clear his head, Jackson decided to get out of LA, and visit the Hopi (hope-ee Reservation of Northeastern Arizona, a place that he had fond memories of visiting as a child.
For the journey, Jackson’s chariot was a beat up, 1953 Willy’s Jeep, normally a vehicle used by the U.S. Army. It had no sound system, so Jackson used a cassette player that he bought at a pawnshop, to listen to his tape of Willy and the Poor Boys by Creedence Clearwater Revival, over and over again, along with a tape of Santana. After hours of driving in the night, Jackson got tired, and decided to pull off the road to sleep- somewhere near Tuba City, Arizona.

In 1977 my parents had broke up, Mom was raising three kids on her own, working as a cashier. Every Friday was payday, and she would bring home a new 8-track. Eagles 71-75 Greatest Hits was played virtually every day for the next 10 years. Thanks Mom for raising me right, Eagles fan for life. 🎸 Love you Mom, miss you everyday ♥️

Esteemed Professor, two things, Eagles were wise enough to evolve from album to album. The rise of of Frey and Henley as songsmiths of the first order certainly gave the band a lasting appeal. They succeeded in a large way where Poco did not. Also, you are so good at pointing out how music is the soundtrack for our memories. My childhood memories are accompanied by the sounds emanating from a cheap transistor radio that played into my ears and was recorded by my heart, and I hit the playback button regularly. Keep up the labor of love.

Jackson Brown allowed Stevie Ray Vaughan to record his first album, Texas Flood, in his studio. So without him we wouldn`t have that album either, at least in its current form. Maybe not at all.

JB has long tentacles that reach all over the 70's and 80's. People know his songs but have no idea about his influence and reach.
The idea of Frey and Browne both living next to each other in the same building has always blown my mind. What are the odds of unknown talents on that level moving in next to each other? The other thing that blows my mind is that Jackson wrote Doctor My Eyes at 18 yo. He must have a wise old soul.
It’s AMAZING. No wonder this song was hugely influenced by Browne. Doctor My Eyes is over 50 years old now. Still timeless.

Money is always a bit tricky for us, and as the new year approaches so do my big bills for each year, but at this moment we had a few bucks we could spare so we upgraded some small appliances (microwave, coffee grinder, toaster, etc) while everything is on sale. I even scored a really nice smart TV for a song 🎵. LOLOL So, our day to day is generally more pleasant right now. For that I am truly grateful, as it's not often that way. Probably a lot better than you'd expect. When you get into these sorts of professions the world is a lot smaller than you'd imagine. I remember in a previous career, it only took me a few years to meet just about all the major players in the entire state through various events. And when you're talking about musicians that are just starting out, there's a limited number of places where you're going to be able to go an soak up the new music being made.
I don’t know if you’ll see this, Professor, but my father passed earlier in the month this video dropped, and crazy enough Take It Easy was one of his favorite songs. I remember being a kid listening to my dad play it on his guitar, and eventually learned guitar myself to play it too.

As a Flagstaff resident, thanks for making sure our amazing town got its due for its role in this incredible Jackson Browne song. You misspoke-flagstaff is 60 miles to the west (not East) of Winslow, but all good...this was a great episode, as always. Browne deserves more credit than he gets in the songwriting world, and segments like this help give him his due.

When Glenn Frye passed away, the "Standing on the corner" foundation, ran a fund raiser and had a 2nd Bronze statue made and placed in the park, none other than Glenn Frye himself. What a fitting tribute to the artists and the forever memorable song!
Glenn deserved better.

I worked at a pizza place in NW Arkansas owned by a couple who were close personal friends of the Frye's. They mentioned being at the Frye's house, I jokingly said, "who, Glenn Frey" and they answered actually, yes.
Every time I hear any Eagles song... I'm instantly back in my dad's Ford!! Riding around with him, going camping and learning to drive in that truck at 13 years old. Three years later, he had converted his pickup into a flat bed. Needless to say this song quickly became my favorite for cruising on Friday or Saturday nights, when dad would let me borrow his truck to go to the Loop. Even though it was the 80s, I was a true 70's Eagles girl, driving a flatbed Ford. Thanks for a great tell on this .. sending it to my dad now to listen. ❤️💕

As a person who has road tripped through the entire western US over the past 25 years, and who has stood on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, this song is an absolute staple of every road trip playlist I've ever created. Probably a top 20 all time rock-pop song in my lifetime.
You'll never do wrong listening to any classic rock while on a hammock in a Sunday afternoon. Eagles, Bread, and so many other rock bands of the '70s are so great to listen to
Plus Steely Dan, Chicago, Doobie Brothers. Great stuff.

I’ve seen Jackson over 50 times and hosted him for a private show for 100 friends here in Cincinnati in 2016. I think he’s up there with the finest songwriters of all time. I put him up there with the likes of Dylan, Springsteen, etc. His catalogue is amazing. The album Late for the Sky is epic. And, he’s a super nice guy.
Late for the sky is my all time favorite album. Every song on it has just amazing lyrics. Totally underrated album in my opinion.
The Late Show of that album is a masterpiece. Jackson is an American treasure. Still good, too.

LTFS is the greatest album of all time IMO. I was born in ‘69 and literally raised on his music. He’s always been my favorite and always will be. Finally made it to that corner in Winslow in 2021, a major bucket list item. I was sad how the gift shops made it more of an Eagles song and gave little bling to JB.

I was born in '63 and it sounds as if he and I were of the same era (I'm near the tail end of a set of 8 sibs). What's funny from my perspective is that you look too young to remember the eighties! Thanks for all the great back stories and for taking me back to the music I grew up on.

If you aren't familiar with a lot of his work I would suggest listening to his acoustic versions of "Sky Blue and Black" or "Shape of a Heart" (also the acoustic) where he can put more emotion behind them. Same goes for "All Good Things".

I think I’m probably about your dad’s age. I agree with his assessment. This song still resonates with me. At the time, it evoked a sense of freedom and the road. Now it’s surreal nostalgia.
It was JB and Eagles that lead me not to want to play an Instrument, but to write and sing songs. I’ve written over 400 songs and have been singing professionally for 40 years. I can honestly say that those two gifts were inspired by the words of Take It Easy, Witchy Woman, Doctor My Eyes and Running On Empty.
Inspired to tell stories of people and places, I developed a king sense of observation that has made my life’s journey special and rewarding.
Our lives are never as boring as we may think, when observed by a writer and paired with melody.

Hi Rock Fans. I went to Winslow a little over a month after Glenn passed away. It was a Sunday morning, at the beginning of March. People were there already standing at the corner taking pictures. For me it was a Bucket List Moment. "Take it Easy" has been one of my Favourite songs since the '80's. Also a Great Road Trip song.

I met Jackson Browne a few years ago after he played at the Lummis Festival in LA. My uncle was in the band for that show so we got to go back and meet Jackson. He was such a gracious guy. He talked to my two young teen boys for a good 5 minutes or so about their own music when they told him they played guitar. He showed such interest and encouragement they have never forgotten him. Just a classy thing to do when you have a bunch of people around you after a show trying to get your attention

I was 12 - in fact, it peaked on my 13th birthday. It was the 1st song I actually pooled my allowance and spare change, went to the record store and bought the 45. The 1st record I ever bought. It hooked me the 1st time I heard it.
One lady told me that she remembers buying the record for Take it Easy immediately after hearing it on the radio.
I have been an eagles fanatic since 1972. Still am. Took my grandkids in Nov for the 50th anniversary of Hotel California. They love them too. I want only Eagles tunes played at my funeral.

For 50 frig'n years, "Take It Easy" has been on my Top 10, but I never knew that Jackson Browne was the genesis of that great tune. I travel past Winslow on my way to visit my daughter several times a year and it "ALWAYS" triggers thoughts of the Eagles and Glenn Frey - to the point that I stage "Take It Easy" to play as I approach Winslow. I'll continue to stage "Take It Easy" through my travels, but now I get to add your story and Jackson Browne to my internal sound track as I'm "running down the road..." Thanks Prof. Who says you can't teach an ol 'dog a new trick or three.
There's a show on hbo called laurel canyon it actually shows them working on that song together! Great show two or three parts all about the music scene back in them days!

The American spirit of helping a neighbor, even if that neighbor is a new friend who lives 9 hours away.
Can you imagine being the mechanics in Winslow, or Buckmaster and friends, knowing they were involved with the creation of that massive hit? And telling friends for decades that was the case, and they say, "Sure you were, bud, sure you were..."

As big and as popular as this classic song is, I'm surprised I've never heard about Jackson Brown's road trip that inspired it.
I'm a boomer, in the late sixties and early seventies my parents religiously turned popular music off, whenever it came on the radio. They were adults during WWII and I was born twenty years later. Eagles were one of the very few bands that were allowed to be played. I don't know how but I love music, I have worked at a touring venue and seen many bands. I love live music but hate the stadium performances. The theatre I worked held 2500 people, everyone could see the performers. If you go to a concert and have to watch a screen, stay at home.
I have to agree with your Dad, this song does mark the start of the seventies and the end of the sixties.

I'm a singer songwriter, and I play a lot of solo acoustic gigs. Take It Easy is one of my "go to" tunes, because I know beyond any doubt that I can pull it out and and everyone, I mean EVERYONE will be singing along. One of the great American songs! And I loved seeing Glen Frey with his California Jam T-shirt.... I was there!

I am 60 years old, and have been an Eagles fan for 45 of those years.
I was there. July 1973 at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, Washington to see Jackson Browne in concert. I talked my date into smuggling in my portable cassette recorder under her dress and I bootlegged the concert. A child of the 60's I have been grateful for the best ever era of music to witness first hand.
From their rich catalog of terrific songs, "Take It Easy" has always been my favorite Eagles song. It was their first major hit that launched their careers as they became the most successful American pop band of the 1970's. The song "Take It Easy" also made the town Winslow, Arizona famous through its lyrics. Great song.

Despite not being my favourite Eagles' song, Take it easy always reminds me of the Knight rider's first episode and also of a fan from the Hell freezes over DVD showing a picture of her "standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona".
Being more a fan of british rock myself, I think the 70s started with the Beatles' desintegration but (imho) they 'officially' began with two records from 1971, the Rolling Stones' Sticky fingers and Led Zeppelin IV.

Thanks for your honoring your dad - that was very nice to hear. As a late Boomer, graduated HS in ‘76, the Eagles and America were THE BANDS that defined my experience. Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd was key, too, but it is the Eagles early stuff that awakens my somnolent immortal youth hiding in the recesses of my mind.
Dear Professor, I am 77 years old, never paid much attention to any kind of music except maybe the Beach Boys and the alike in the late 60s. but Now that I am old 77, rock and roll, heavy metal, electric guitars, crazy vocals have caught my imagination, damn even classical. You (and a few others) skillfully and passionately explained to me what music is, where it came from and the price paid by the people who made it alive. This is weak but, Thank You!

Hotel California was my introduction to Eagles...but Take It Easy is my favorite. Didn't know that Jackson Browne wrote it...and the story behind is fabulous. Take It Easy is always one of the first tracks I put on my play list when doing a road trip. Just sets the mood to calm down...get there when you get there...and enjoy the adventure. It is their signature song, but most people overlook Take it Easy. It’s one of my favorite songs that the Eagles did. The best songs for calming down anxiety.

Eagles, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, and Linda Ronstadt dominated my ears the summer between my freshman and sophomore years in high school. My older brother introduced me to all of them. It was my fondest memory of a summer ever. It was that transition from a geeky freshman to the first steps of manhood.
I will always love this music. Linda did so many covers of their music, and each had a hand in the other’s it seems. Sharing backing vocals on the other’s albums. I didn’t even know it then, it was just music we listened to that summer.
Your videos always take me back to a time, and they are always good times, even when they might not have felt like it when they were happening. I love that you and your dad talked music. My dad and I talked very little growing up, and I wish we’d have had something to talk about.

I didn't have that with my Dad, he's still alive ( I'm 61, he's 93 ), we talk about his music, Big Band Era, European and Spanish songs. I was 12 when I first heard that song. Listening on a console tv radio the size of a couch. It was the first warm spring day and we had all the doors of the house open. No rewind button
I was 13 in 1972 and was a budding rock fan. As my taste and love of music grew, Jackson Browne was always one of my favorites. I got to see him in NYC in the 80s. Those were the good old days…and the music was amazing! Thanks for doing this show. I just subscribed!

I was also 13 when this song came out. Eagles was always and will always be my favorite band. I plan to go see them live in Tampa March 28th 2023. Glen fry will live on in our hearts forever.
I have deep affections for this song and group. I listened to their greatest hits over and over in 1984-86 on my walkman as I rode a train back and forth from college in Miami. Mid 1980s I was working in a mall bookstore in Amarillo Texas. One guy who worked with me had the last named Souther. Come to find out, his son was famous, J.D. Souther. John was very proud of his son and his success in writing. It was great to hear the thing in this video about J.D. and brought back memories for me of working with his dad, who was very well versed in everything literary.
I think the greatest line isn't one line. It is the line that hit you at that right moment and kept you looking for more of that moment. So much music brings you there, that I don't know if I could point to just one line.
Wonderful homage to your father! One I can particularly relate to. I too, recall hearing Take it Easy for the first time. Ironically, my father hated rock but found that song almost enjoyable. He loved the banjo riff at the end. A band that transcends music genres left their mark on history and will always be one of the greatest of all time. I also love the influences of artists who are not nearly as notorious (Jackson Browne) but we’re such a dominant force in the industry. Jackson reminds me of another massive talent whom I feel was always underrated and that would be George Harrison. But that’s another story. Great video!

1972 Las Vegas Convention Center, Eagles opened up for Jethro Tull's "Thick as a brick Tour". In Vegas , We hadn't even heard the Eagles yet, couldn't even find an album the next day. But, for my Birthday, May 28th, My best friend Howard Jones bought me the Jethro Tull Album, as it was new as well. Take it Easy was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. It's a Fun Song and everybody Loves to sing Along.

Jackson Browne always makes me think of Bob Seger, another Rock Legend that I'm a huge fan of. And I agree, Jackson Browne is an amazing, talented storyteller.
Man! I not too proud to say your commentary about you and your dad made me tear up! My dad and I played in a band when I was a teen in the 70's (covered many Eagles tunes). We seldom got along for very long at a time before ticking each other off... but there was no one else in my universe that I could talk about music to like I could him (ALS took him in '91). Fantastic job talking about the song and the Eagles legacy!
There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the greatest of all youtube channels, and stands as a great justification for the existence of the website. Consistent high quality of subject matter and the inside track on the music that moved us through our lives.
I've been a fan of Eagles since the late 70s - since I picked up an ex-jukebox 45rpm copy of Hotel California with New Kid In Town on the b-side. I got married, and divorced to eagles songs, with Peaceful Easy Feeling and Tequila Sunrise becoming my own soundtrack. Me, along with tens of thousands of guys of my generation.

In June 1972 I loaded up my yellow Chevelle with all I owned and left the East coast for the rest of my life. As I crossed the George Washington bridge, under a bright noonday sun on the fateful trip, I still remember hearing "Take it easy" on the car radio. I thought I was headed to Arizona and the song felt like an anthem. But on July 3 my engine blew up outside Ft. Morgan, Colorado and so began the rest of my life. It's been over fifty years now and that song on that bridge is a milestone in my mind and heart.
Once again you blow me away at the depth of your knowledge of behind the scenes of Rock & Roll songs I guess I should not be surprised when someone has a passion for something it comes through in there work!
My husband and I made a pilgrimage to “The Corner” in April 2021. Lots of fans of all ages were there getting photos of themselves at the corner. A souvenir store blasts Eagles music out in the street. We had great fun in Winslow!

Made it there in July of 2021 with my daughter. A big bucket list item. Was just sad that it was mostly presented as an Eagles tune. JB should have a better presence there in the gift shops.

Your dad was right, I was there too, and this song turned the corner on the previous decade. A whole new feel to music! I was at Target last month when this song came on, and a stranger and I were singing along to it in the pharmacy aisle. It not only gets better with age, it’s ageless.

Jackson is a great story teller,his tune running on empty was my theme as a teen keeping the gas tank filled. Take it easy was the gateway song to the seventies and the era of the Eagles so your father nailed it. We felt the same way at that time.
From 1971 to 1985 Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey produced so many songs that defined American Folk/Country Rock.

Another amazing story. I remember hearing Glenn Fry relate the story onstage during a concert. Glenn always shared the best stories and made Eagles music come alive. He shared where he was and his state of mind.

Always have loved this song! I actually sang backup with some buddies of mine when I was 17 to this song. We got into a bar by saying we were part of the band. The door guys made us go straight to the stage and fortunately my buddies started playing “Take it Easy”. I can’t sing at all and was pretty messed up, but we can all sing backup to this legendary classic! Thanks for the trip down memory lane and keep doing what you do Adam..

Your comments about your Dad tug at my heart. I remember at about 4 promising my Mom I wouldn't listen to the Beetles! At 91 Mom has long forgotten but it made listening to the Beetles a guilty pleasure to this day.

Appreciate your heartfelt comments about the discussions you had with your Dad when you were growing up. I can relate both as a son and as a father with my own son. Hard to argue against Take It Easy and Eagles in general... knowing the volume of sales associated with their albums and Greatest Hits collections. Truly a defining song of a decade and genre. Hope to make the pilgrimage to that corner one of these days. Cheers

I saw Clint Black years ago in concert. Opened for Alabama. Outdoor concert. The crowd was really enthusiastic and I remember Clint Black saying “ Y’all’s raising some heck tonight!” Great concert.
I discovered the Eagles in the late 80s and instantly fell in love with their music. I have all of their albums, and my top three are One of These Nights, Hotel California, and Desperado. These are magnificent albums. From Journey of the Sorcerer, Take It to the Limit, Lyin’ Eyes, Doolin-Dalton, Certain Kind of Fool, Outlaw Man, New Kid in Town, Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane, The Last Resort, and of course Take It Easy, they have made some of the coolest songs I’ve ever heard. Rock on.
In 1977 my parents had just moved from a large city to a much smaller town (in Ontario, Can). I made several friends, who were also guitar players, who turned my ears to the likes of Eagles, Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton and many others. Boy, did it turn my head. I was fortunate enough when the Eagles did their "Hell Freezes Over" Tour to get great seats (17th row - floor) to see them in Ottawa. It is without a doubt one of the best concerts, if not the best, I've ever seen. I consider myself extremely lucky to have grown up in the late 60's and 70's to catch some of the best music in the world. No one can take that away from me. Rock on..... rock on man. (I expect to be buried with one of my guitars.)
All GF & Eagles accolades aside, Jackson Browne (much like Dan Fogelberg) is a criminally underrated and overlooked lyrical wordsmith and composer. FWIW: My Fave JB LP is 1980's 'Hold Out'.

There's a song for every man on that record, love Redneck Friend it has some fantastic slide guitar on it,forget the guy's name but he's a great guitarist. Gotta say JB is one of my favorites from the seventies. Take it easy everybody. 😀🤪

Love the music of Eagles and Jackson Browne and love this story. Nothing like those 70’s groups I grew up listening to them because of my older brother and I am forever grateful. We even saw the Eagles together 10 to 12 years ago or so with all of the members including Joe Walsh what a great concert.
Sure. This content resins with me. Just when I prepare in my mind, my comment on the song, the Professor whips up a memory from the backroads of his mind that touches the "father and son moments" of his heart. That love is what resonates to all of his listeners, and it's what makes me sit back and say "Wow, that was a spiritual feeling. " We never knew your dad, but we sure feel as though we did. As if we were in the same room. God bless.

Don't want to rub it in but I was here. I saw Linda at the Whiskey with the Eagles backing here. I fell in love. She was wearing short little jean shorts and a tied up white top. She was nursing a sore throat with shots of something and apologizing for her raspy voice. Thank professor for bringing back some of these great memories. If you are really interested there is a video out called "legends of the canyon", that is as close to a documentary of this time and place as I have ever found
