The Moody Blues had some of the most lush harmonies of the late 60's and early 70's. Hypnotic and tight, and like most prog rock, best experienced while "under the influence."
And although they were more of a jazz quartet, The Manhattan Transfer had some of the tightest and most intricate harmonies in all of music. Two of their biggest crossover hits are great examples of this: "The Boy From New York City," and "Soul Food to Go" (which also had an amazing music video featuring stop frame animation in the style of the old award-winning California Raisins commercials).

Yes the Association is one of my all time favorite groups. Along Comes Mary brings back memories of happier times Summer of 1966, graduation from high school, last really free summer. It was an anti drug song, ahead of its time. I love to sing along, but you gotta sing fast. Another song of theirs I like is a unique song called "Requiem For the Masses. " About a soldier in Vietnam, poor sucker catches a bullet and wanders off into the jungle to die. Tells of the thoughts going thru his head as he lay there expiring. A very scathing anti-war song.

A good friend passed on me a couple of years ago.
I was with him every day for a few years.
I knew he had a heart problem, and I would do things after hours at the shop so he didn’t have to.
    I wouldn’t let him.
One day, he was in great pain, and had two forms of stage four cancer.
    Three weeks later…
I was scrolling through music, and came across The Byrds, Turn,Turn,Turn.
They didn’t have the song, but the funeral director did better.
He read the verses directly from the Book of Ecclesiastes.
    We all miss you, Tony.

Being able to sing is not require and if you spit and slobber like a brainless monkey then you can do rap, too. I suspect that the industry forgot to put the C in front of rap because the people running it aren't intelligent enough to spell it correctly. It's all no talent noise now.

Funny thing is of the hundreds of songs, albums and shows he played on jazz was his favorite music. He also wrote and played the theme song for Green Acres and the Wild Wild West. RIP Bill Pitman.

Naturally I then had to begin listening to them and wow, it's amazing. It's almost like Brian is doing the arrangements for them. Glad I saw that documentary and have added the Lettermen on my "harmony-centric" playlist along with the Beachboys, CSNY, 3 Dog Night, Queen. ABBA, Bee Gees, Momma's & Poppa's, Cowsills, E.W and Fire, The Association, Peter-Paul& Mary, Certain Beatle songs with lush vocal arrangements, Manhattan Transfer, and a good grouping of individual songs that have harmonic magic.

I personally, for the harmonic balance put " California Dreamin" at the top of the list. The singers loft the tune into the air and its just "picked up" by the others, who "answer" the sound by adding to it, rather than all singing the same notes, demonstrating a " group vocality".
    They "echo" each other!
Thats why i think it should be top of the list

Plenty of songs & groups are left out here, simply because there are so ridiculously many that you'd have had, not a 13-minute, but a 13-hour video! My own 2¢ -
    Almost anything by The Seekers, maybe choose _I'll Never Find Another You,_ lead vocal by the late Judith Durham; wr. by Tom Springfield;
_You Were On My Mind,_ by We Five; lead vocal by Beverly Bivens; written by Sylvia Fricker of Ian (Tyson) & Sylvia.
Many songs by The Roches, 3 sisters with fantastic vocal harmonies; _Losing True_ (their own composition) or the _Hallelujah Chorus_ by G. F. Handel (from The Messiah)
If you can find a better 3-voice, _a capella_ version of that work, I'd like to hear it!!
All these (& more!) are highly recommended. Have a listen!
    Fred

Home Free is doing covers of so many of these songs. And they knock them out of the park! Their harmonies are amazing. And the fact that they are also Acapella makes their music even more thrilling!
("All I have to Do is Dream" was my husband and my theme song. And, yes, those years were more innocent for most of us than today.)

I’m glad that Because was included. The harmony is so dreamy and complex.

You could say can't really say top 10, you could say some of the top songs. Being those songs were in a window of time of about 12-15 years only. They are definitely some of the greatest with harmonies along with a lot more. Still great, Thanks for putting them on here.

Peter, Paul and Mary had some phenomenal harmonies and I'm surprised to see no mention of them.

Yes, I was disappointed they weren't mentioned. Three voices, two guitars and backing them one upright bass. Just beautiful, moving music.

Their pick here was worthy, yet nothing topped "Cathy's Clown" for harmonic perfection.

Queen and Boston are also well known for the musicality of their harmonies. I never hear good music of any kind without thinking of my mom, a humble piano teacher, who taught me to love and take joy in beautiful music. Thanks Mom!

Hard to do a list like this without leaving people out, but this did a pretty good job. Carpenters, Bee Gees, Crosby Stills and Nash, and The Association should be on such a list, too. As somebody mentioned below, The Association's "Everything That Touches You" is not just one of the most beautiful songs ever written in the pop/rock age, but the harmonies are breathtaking. And, of course, you could fill all ten spots with Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. "Our Prayer" (a cappella) is unparalleled.

Excellent list of classics! If you do a top 20 list, please add anything by Queen, unless they deserve a list all their own. They have so many superb songs with such spin-chilling, haunting harmonies its hard to keep track.
