Years ago when I was a kid, I'm 71 now I worked at a Sunoco gas station on interstate 70 in Washington Co. Pa. I was working the gas pumps and a truck pulling a trailer pulled in. Inside the trailer was the "Monkeymobile". I was allowed to see it up close and personal. It was a high school kid's dream come true. A couple of years later I had my own "66" Goat.
@@loucostabile Actually, I was so crazy about the GTO'S that when I was in high school they called me "GTO John". That's actually true. I would have loved to have it to this day but unfortunately I couldn't feed it and a family and pay rent too. But I've had a couple of nice cars since. I have a "63" Falcon Futura sport Convertible in an upholstery shop in Southern California right now and I hope to bring it home in the near future. 👍
Awesome 😎 Did you happen to have a factory fm radio with a 'reverb' switch to make it sound like it was in stereo? A friend of mine had a (bronze or tan maybe) '66 GTO and it had that and I have never seen it in any other car. Ever. That's why I was asking. What was a cool option.

I was born in 1966, but became a Monkees fan after watching the show in syndication in the early to mid 70s, and the Monkeemobile made an impression on me from the minute that I saw it. My father owned a 1969 GTO Convertible and I have been a fan of those cars ever since. Thanks Lou and Tony for giving this tour of a piece of TV history.

Really enjoyed getting a close up tour (and a ride!) in this classic custom; been a fan since I was a kid. I got a chance to chat with Dean Jeffries at the 2010 Detroit Autorama while standing next to the Monkeemobile with the white interior. It was a fascinating and very frank conversation. Dean was not a fan of George Barris at all, and he had good reasons. RIP Dean; you were and still are a legend. Thanks to Tony Rota for caring for the original, and thanks to you, Lou, for sharing this with us.

Hi, Lou! You and Tony say this is the real Monkeemobile...I say "I'm a believer!" LOL! Thanks for presenting this iconic vehicle to us and wishing you a Pleasant Valley Sunday!
I can understand why some people question the authenticity of this particular car. Getting accurate information on the Monkeemobile isn't easy. This appears to be the one used on the opening credits of the television show but on TV it had no Monkees logo on the door. According to most of the research I've done Dean Jeffries built 2 Monkeemobiles. One for the show and one for promotions. I found a picture of dean Jeffries and a Monkeemobile, possibly the promotional car but the Monkees logo was different.
@@gator2813 the logo on this car is different because the owner didn't have permission to use the original one. This is the original #1 car used in the show for all the important shots.
When I was teenager (way back back in 1973) I moved to Hollywood, CA and started working with my father who was building custom cars for George Barris and the Monkeemobile was one of the cars we had there. I was pretty excited to see it but flat out stunned when I found out that "Supercharger" was fake! Good to see it's still being cared for and looking so good. Among the "Show Cars" we had there it was one of the better crafted cars, and one of the few that was a running car.

Super cool!!! I used to watch this show in re-runs and I have several of their albums!!! What a fantastic creation of a car!!! Lots of shows back then had a custom car to represent the show, too bad we don't really see that anymore. Fun car for "Fun Friday"!!!
Such a great car!! I watched the show as a kid, and have the DVD box sets! Its funny, in a interview, Mike Nesmith was dumbfounded that Dean Jeffries was mentioned in the shows credits. "It just a car...?"🎸😎👍

Have always been a monkee and still am. This car got me hooked on GTO's. Have a 69 judge which looks alot this car atleast in the front. I prefer the one with the white interior, but they are both great.
Tony- I enjoyed talking with you at the Autofair on Friday. I'm the guy that has the Dean Jeffries built bullcar from Deathrace 2000. Thanks for taking care of this historic Pontiac!

Now I have to drag out my 35 mm pictures of the Monkeemobile that I saw in the early 80's, I seem to remember it with a white top and interior. Also the Dragula, Munstermobile, there also. I had a Montero Red/black vinyl top 1966 Pontiac Grand Prix with that 389 (4bbl, 325hp 429ft lbs torque) Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. The grille of the Grand Prix had more angular rake to it than the stock '66 GTO, more like the Monkeymobile, but not that exaggerated!

I live in the Uk and I have always loved American muscle cars, although I like classic British cars a close second. I really appreciate being able to see the cars you show on your channel, as there are very few American cars around my part of the UK.
I was hired to do the interior and build the whole top on that car in 1997 when it was owned by the Unanue family (Goya Foods)....just after the 4 Monkees had their reunion tv show in it. You know it's Monkeemobile#1 because it still has the camera mounts under it and the Jeffries decal in the glovebox. I got to drive it to our Cruise Night in Rockaway, NJ ...that was an experience!

Great video, Lou. It’s one, if not THE MOST memorable TV & Movie cars from my childhood. The original George Barris Batmobile, Dean Jeffries’ Green Hornet “Black Beauty,” of course The Munsters’ Munster Koach and Grandpa’ Drag-U-La Coffin dragster, James Bond’s gadget-filled Aston Martin, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’s Piranha...such iconic cars that people still idolize to this day. Yeah, I had the lunchboxes, the Corgi toys, the model kits...all that stuff. But having the chance to sit in one and even take a ride in one must’ve been a dream come true! Thanks so much for bringing us something truly iconic.

Wow, truly iconic cruiser. Yea I had the model & watched the episodes, always thought Barris was original builder.....I love the simplicity of this car, no windows, 3rd row seat, no handles...If I made one I'd surely use a real blower dual quads & a 4speed....389 was a good motor.

I tell you what. You are so lucky to be able to experience all of these awesome cars. The Monkees was a little before my time, but I still recognise this iconic automobile. What a wild and fun custom. I had to share this video with my Dad. He got a kick out of seeing the Monkeemobile in a little more detail than what he remembers from the television show. Thanks for sharing Lou. Take care.

The Monkees was one of the shows I grew up on and I was a car freak as a kid. The Munster mobile, Batmobile, Monkeymobile, General Lee, Bullet, and the Starsky & Hutch Torino. The 60s and 70s were the time for big power and crazy custom cars. Thanks for bringing my childhood back from distanced memories.

Wow, what a great find! Like yourself and other commenters, I mostly watched the Monkees to see the car. Which has got me thinking - on TV in the past some cars were almost characters (Monkeemobile, Munsters car, Rockford’s Firebird, Starsky’s Gran Torino, KITT, Miami Vice “Testarossa”, General Lee, Batmobile etc). That’s not really the case any more. Thanks for bringing this piece of history to us. Very interesting car and a neat build.
Hi Jeff, Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-) Hmmm, only one missing from your list is 1) Starsky's Torino & 2) Testarossa from Miami Vice, all other here, Lou

Back several years ago, I was working on a swimming pool in Ormond Beach Florida. The house next door had a Monkee Mobile in the garage. It had a white top and interior. One day I heard this rumble and walked out front to see the car coming out of the garage and take off down the street. I have seen it a few times on the roads around Ormond Beach and Daytona, but it's been a few years since the last time, then again I don't get around as much as I did. I don't know if it's still around or not.

A car, thats exaggerated in all the right ways. A great way of putting it !!!! Takes me back as a kid. The Munsters car, the bat mobile, the green hornet and the orange drink tang and of course,, the Monkees, the Archie's and the cardboard records behind the cereal boxes, lunch boxes of the TV shows, H.R. puff 'n'' stuff, Adam 12, I just couldn't wait to see the cars in the background. Seem people were just more innovated back in the day. Too bad. We were so Damm poor. I couldn't enjoy but only watch..boo hoo hoo...l.o .l but the memories, will always be priceless in my mind. Really great that Tony knows the car's history so well, found myself nodding as he related all the correct details. I'm glad that Dean Jeffries gets correct credit for the build after Barris craftily insinuated that he created it! The story I heard about the running gear was that it originally had a genuine blown and injected 455 Pontiac Big Block and a solid-mounted rear axle so it would wheelstand easily, but as Tony says, it scared the crap out of the actors and crew so they tamed it down!

@@Ponchoman07 You've got a point there! Yet the fitment of a 455 is how the story was related to me, I think the source was an old hot rod or car craft mag? I'll try and solve that mystery!
@@Ponchoman07 According Wikipedia it was originally a blown 389. The 455 reference could have been a magazine reporting error. Both cars were factory 389s apparently, so I'd say you're right :)

High praise :-) Happy to read this car brings back memories!
Such a great car!! I watched the show as a kid, and have the DVD box sets! Its funny, in a interview, Mike Nesmith was dumbfounded that Dean Jeffries was mentioned in the shows credits. "It just a car...?"🎸😎👍

Hi zulumax1, The other car does have a white top & interior. Thanks for viewing and sharing you had a nice 1966 Grand Prix, sounds like a fun car, Lou

I was hired to do the interior and build the whole top on that car in 1997 when it was owned by the Unanue family (Goya Foods)....just after the 4 Monkees had their reunion tv show in it.

GM did not begin making 455’s until ‘70 or ‘71
@@Ponchoman07 You've got a point there! Yet the fitment of a 455 is how the story was related to me, I think the source was an old hot rod or car craft mag? I'll try and solve that mystery!
My point being only that a 455 was not the original engine; that could only have been a 389 or 421.
@@Ponchoman07 According Wikipedia it was originally a blown 389. The 455 reference could have been a magazine reporting error. Both cars were factory 389s apparently, so I'd say you're right :)
I don't remember Peter Tork driving the Monkeemobile much in the The Monkees, my recollection is Mike Nesmith doing a lot of the driving (take a look at the opening of the show, for instance).

Closest l got was my beloved metallic green 1970 Chrysler VIP with a torqueflite and a 318 two barrel - that was a big motor in Australia!

Those cars had lead metal working down to perfection back then! My father in law still talks about it being a lost art in body repair. Hard to do with all the plastic nowadays, huh?! Nice video Sir Lou. Thx.
