I used to share an office with John Howlett at Leyland Cars. He was responsible for liaison with TV companies and told me that thing was practically undriveable at normal road speeds, mainly because the steering was so heavy that it was the devil's own job to get it round corners.

yes the wheel offset of the wheels was so wrong it was terrible to drive , they narrowed the wheels only on the inside , so the outside stayed the same to keep the look of the racecars

I would have been about 12 when my eldest brother came home with a brand new Jag 4.2 - it was in brown with leather upholstery and more buttons and switches than a BBC outside broadcast unit, it was love at first site. My folks had a 1300 mk 2 Cortina - the deluxe model with chrome wheel trims and very little else. The Jag had a/c and electric windows, it went like stink and drove like nothing else I had experienced at the time. I have had half a dozen Jags myself to date, my favourite being the 2000 XJR supercharged beast - what a car. Times are hard now so a turbo charged mini is my daily driver but as soon as things turn around my days of Jaglessness will be over once more.

A few other things about the "Big Cat" to note:
The original color of this car from Jaguar was Lilac. Thank goodness for the repaint!
Also, if you didn't realize, at the 2:27 mark, Steed actually looks like he's driving a manual (watch his left arm) and with the correct soundtrack (it were really a manual in the first place) to match.
Both Patrick Macnee and Joanna Lumley have talked a great length about the car, with Patrick stating it was an absolute bear to drive due to the modified suspension and Joanna (being a car gal) stating she loved the car, but was always relegated to the back seat!
I was also keeping track of the car from here in the US, and after the restoration company tanked, the owner had the car supposedly sent off to another resto company to be completed. Nothing's been confirmed though, and that's the very last thing about the car that I've heard.

In 1985 I bought an accident damaged 1976P reg 4.2Coupe. Once repaired it was a dream to drive. All my friends who had normal 4door XJ's commented on how nice to drive it was.
As for the quality of the car... ummm... that's another story.

I had the 4.2 Daimler sovereign in the 80s I did like it at 1st but the steering was very slow to react maybe because of those big tyres that those cars had... The car though was beautiful to be inside with wood everywhere tastefully done.. And very quiet on the motorway... I've replaced it with a Granada 2.8 I more nimble and more fun to drive.. But there was always something about the Big cat in a way.

probably the rubber bushing on the steering rack , when they get older the steering feels like a boat , the whole rack moves first before it starts doing something
we used to put metal shims in it so the rack could not move anymore that way the handeling would improve a lot

Sadly film and television props aren't really valued by the production companies once they've finished with them. Mark I Productions probably stuffed it in a lock-up with a load of other stuff and left it there until it was eventually sold. I have a friend who used to work in the model unit on the Bond films and much of the stuff he made suffered the same fate.
