My Kneaded Eraser Is Bad! What Can I Do About It?

- Did you purchase a kneaded eraser that just crumbles & doesn't stretch or knead? YOU AREN'T ALONE! I've heard this for at least 5 years about Prismacolor/Design brand kneaded erasers from you & my students. Take a look at the video to see if your eraser behaves as it should or if it doesn't.
Watch to the end to see the results I got when I contacted the parent company of Prismacolor, Newell Brands. They were awesome and sent 4 replacement erasers for the 3 I purchased, but they still aren't really stretchy and I am guessing if they sit in my supply closet for a year they won't work at all... Still, it was appreciated that they took on replacing their product at their expense.
Unfortunately, today (6/10/22) the Newell Brand/Prismacolor website contact page link is NOT working! I'll include the link in case they fix it. You have to select Prismacolor from the brand drop-down menu and you should get a contact form to fill out.
*Note as of August 26, 2022, this contact form doesn't seem to work:
www.newellbrands.com/contact
Try them on Facebook instead:
/ prismacolor
I suggest every single one of you contact them to protest this poor-performing product if you get one. They don't seem to know how bad it is!
And if you're looking for a RELIABLE kneaded eraser experience, I recommend these two brands that have been consistent over the last 5 years and also come with a plastic case to keep them from sticking to other stuff:
Lyra Kneaded Eraser

Faber-Castell Kneaded Eraser

I have no relationship with the manufacturers/dealers of this product, I just have experience using it in my artwork/teaching.
Just opened the two Prismacolor kneaded erasers in my drawer and sure enough, they’re unusable.
I used to use the Prismacolor brand hence me switching to the brand of the Art store I currently go to. Not sure why the prism quality went poor, could have changed.
Grr. So frustrating! Well now you know you can contact the Newel brand and get replacements 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Wish I would have seen this before buying a Prismacolor kneaded eraser! I trusted the brand based on their markers which was apparently a silly assumption. Mine arrived looking yellowed, hard, and impossible to knead. Right now it's sitting on my desk as a collection of crumbles- and this is after 15 minutes of trying to knead it! Just complete garbage.
Thank you for the recommendation & demonstration of better brands- I'll be buying both a Faber-Castell and Lyra to try out :-)
Please do let the manufacturer know. This has gone on for too many years and they don’t seem to have any idea the number of bad erasers people spend money on. It drives me crazy! So the more we can demonstrate the problem to them - the better! So sorry you got the bad kind, too.
@@Lzmstudio will do!!
Definitely hit or miss with kneaded erasers. I myself purchased ones that were too hard and too soft; both can be a pain to deal with. Recently purchased two kneaded erasers from the brand of the Art store that works very good regardless of the humidity. Good topic.
The Art Store is a brand name? Thanks so much for watching!
@@Lzmstudio Blick Art store, yes they have their own eraser, which is named after the store..(weird I guess) I used to shop at Da Vinci Art however most of those art stores have closed down, unfortunately.
Yes, I tried that one once! You can see my comparison here: ruclips.net/video/JJUgw0Lpoac/видео.html
Wish I would have seen this 2 days ago. Yup. Mine is so tough it just tears into little pieces. Sad. :(
Boo. Definitely contact the manufacturer. You are not alone in this…😢
OMG! Thank you!! I'm new and I've tried for 2 years and just wasn't getting it. My brother who's an artist said it was trash. So I bought a "fresh" one and EVERYTHING you just showed was 100% my experience! Thank you Thank you! I don't feel like I'm going crazy anymore :)
It is almost gaslighting that this company continues to sell bad erasers for nearly a decade! It is maddening!
@@Lzmstudio I was wondering why my needed eraser was so bad thank you so much 😊
@@tadziuwajler739 I need to start tallying how many people come here to say this and what brands they are. So sorry 😞
Super video timing as i was just about to buy one of these. I certainly won't bother now. Especially as they're the most expensive kneaded eraser in the UK.
I hadn't considered Lyra, i'll hunt them down and hopefully give one a try and see how it goes.
Thanks for great informative video.
Thank you for sharing. I am new to the earaser and I thought I was using it wrong. It would just crumble. I was going to do without. I will try another brand thanks to you.
Glad it was helpful! I'm bummed everyone keeps buying these bum erasers! Wish they would alter the formula to make them better, so definitely contact the manufacturers.
I just went into storage and pulled out all of my prism erasers and whoa...strait to the trash. thanks for sharing the alternative brands. just added to my amazon cart.
Sorry it happened to you too😢
This has been an irritation for YEARS!! I appreciate your video and recommendation!
Ugh. I hate that we’ve all been dealing with it for years. They need to know their product is bad!
To this day I never thought that was exactly how they are meant to be used. Sure I rolled them inside itself to get a clean surface but I didn't know you're meant to kneed it stretching it like Buble gum. I assume they are all meant to be tough... The more you know 😮
The name has meaning! Knead those babies up!😆
The one nice thing about the Prismacolor Kneeded Eraser is you can form it into sort of a pencil shape and use it to draw. But it turned me off of Kneaded erasers, so I'm glad to hear it's just Prismacolor.
Hmm that sounds like it’s too firm but a more functional one vs the drums led that won’t mix together ones I’ve gotten. Nice way to use what you can with what you have!
Thank you for this! Have you had any bad experiences with the other recommended erasers? And where can I buy them?
Here are my other reviews: ruclips.net/video/JJUgw0Lpoac/видео.html and I always buy the Lyra eraser! amzn.to/3Y7vSVr Hope that helps you out!
should i throw mine away? i just opened it and was really excited then shot down real quick because it started breaking and was really tough
I’d follow the suggestions in the text description of the video to write the manufacturer and get a replacement. They need to know how many of us have this experience. So sorry you’re one of the many. 😞
ty girl i was so confused! u are amazing and gorgeous :D
Hahah thanks. Glad to help out!
@@Lzmstudio :D
This was my first one and I actually tore up my hands and tried everything but it won't recombine at all! I don't know what to do :(
Please write the company so they know how many of us are affected. Sorry you got another bad eraser 😢
Thank you so much for discussing this subject! How can I prevent my kneaded eraser from fading my pencil lines? Thanks
I am not understanding your question because the kneaded eraser will fade pencil lines you erase… maybe try to ask me another way so I comprehend what you’re getting at?
It is supposed to do that so your pencil lines won't show through. Otherwise, you would not have a need to use an eraser at all.
i just opened a faber castle eraser and when i stretch it it become a sandy texture
Yup. Another victim. Please let them know!
I am glad I never tried the Prismacolor one. I have always only bought the Faber Castell ones. I never had a problem with those.
Yep they are consistent even if they are a little too gooey!
Thank you LZM , I will order the Faber and Pastell....
The Faber Castell one is great! amzn.to/3KmxuEy
I opened a new one right now. I thought, “oh prismacolor. They have really good colored pencils, so their erasers must be great too!” When I was buying it. I opened it and tapped it on my desk and it sounds like a rock more so than an eraser. I tried to knead it and it crumbled. It doesn’t stick to itself. And I actually bought this pack of erasers because I have a final exam tomorrow and I am at my dorm and forgot to bring erasers from home with me, which will likely be needed for me to be able to complete this very difficult chemistry exam. This was the only eraser that my bookstore carries. I can’t return it cus I need the other erasers in the pack for my exam tomorrow. I came to this video looking for a way to get this kneaded eraser to work, but I guess it’s impossible…
Ugh I’m sorry!! I’d write the company- instructions in the text of this video- after your exam and they should send you a new one. Save the wrapper and receipt in case they need it. And good luck on that exam!!! Go get it!!!
i have a kneaded eraser that just gets stringy when i try to pull it apart, can i fix it or should i throw it out?
Hmm. Stringy can be normal but it can also mean it’s absorbed too much graphite and needs to be replaced. Hard to tell!
My kneaded eraser cant stick together and it will just fall apart when i pull it what did i do wrong 😢
You did nothing wrong- it’s likely one of the bad brands. I suggest you contact the manufacturer!
Had Prismacolor kneaded eraser unused, just opened it and it cracked in half when I tried to knead it. Maybe it's because I didn't open it when I first bought it but I'm unsure.
I’m guessing no- they are just bad all the time now😭
I don’t think so. Just got mine and it’s unusable
Which is the most trustable brand? I found a brand called Koh-i-noor 6422 which has a different case, and i found a faber castel one so i dont know what to pick 😅
The faber castell is good but very very soft. Haven’t used the koh-I-noor. These are my recommendations: Review: Kneaded Eraser/Gummy Eraser Comparison

@@Lzmstudio ah, thank you for responding ^^ ( new sub by the way 😊 )
@@shibajuniorp3365 Aw thanks!!
@@Lzmstudio do you have tips on how to make your kneaded eraser stretchy?
@@shibajuniorp3365 if it doesn’t stretch at all- it’s garbage. If it has some stretch to it hold it in your palm to warm it up a few minutes then knead it between two hands and it should stretch more. The older they get the less they stretch so after loads of erasing you’ll need a new one.
mine is hard as a rock, any tips to soften it up?
Sadly I don’t have any. I’d write the company. :/
What abt mont marte I got one it so hard
Hmm, I haven't tried that brand, but sounds like the same problem. Bummer!
Watching this because I was wondering why my brand new prismacolor eraser was a literal rock 😭 i cant even break it apart its SOLID 😂
So frustrating. They are thieves 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you! 💜
Aw, thank you! :)
If you use the Faber Castell ones that come with its own little box, you will never have that problem.
Yes! Those are a little too gooey though, which makes them difficult for very young and older students to control. They are at least consistent though!
I have a generals kneaded ereaser and it was not good once I opened it
Like it can't stretch
Oof I haven’t heard of a bad batch from General’s yet. This is the first. I’d definitely contact them so they know!
Bought two and can't knead them at all. I thought I bought a standard gum eraser. Thanks for the video so I know it's not just me.
It’s everyone I’ve known who has bought one of this brand for the last five years 🤦🏻♀️ try one of these other brands instead ruclips.net/video/JJUgw0Lpoac/видео.html but definitely let Newell Brands know so others don’t have the same fate!
Opened mine two days ago and have been trying with all my might to knead it, then searched on youtube for a solution. So here I am, just realizing it's just a scrap product. 😢
Ugh. Yeah. Another lemon. So sorry
I bought fiber castel kneaded eraser and they are pretty sandy
Hmm sandy- haven’t had that experience with Faber Castell myself!
I am so frustrated with kneaded erasers. The prismacolor erasers are too soft. I use kneaded erasers sometimes to shape into a point and then I can pull lines up from my drawing. Or I will shape them into a small shape so that I can reach small spaces. But all the kneaded erasers I've use lately are way too soft and I can only use them as a blob. Which is fine if you're just pulling up graphite or charcoal in large areas. So why is it they've all of a sudden gotten so crappy? I would like it if they were harder.
The best ones are linked in the text of this video. They don’t last longer than 6-12 months but they are more firm, thankfully!

What’s the paper used in this demo?
Likely Strathmore sketch or Legion Stonehenge. Pretty much what I use daily!
Thank you! :-)
I recently was given a Prismacolor kit (markers, pencils, and kneaded eraser) as a gift since I've started getting back into drawing after 15 years of barely picking up a pencil. I've been...less than impressed, to say the least. The markers can't put down a consistent amount of ink, the graphite in the pencils seems way too brittle compared to anything else I've used, and the kneaded eraser is all but useless. I literally spent two hours playing with it and trying to knead it while watching a movie and it never came together. It's a shame, because I've heard good things about this brand in the past. But I guess I know what to avoid going forward.
Yeah the only thing this brand is consistently good at is colored pencils now. Although I don’t use markers for work… so I can’t vouch for that myself. Check if you can email them regarding the eraser? What a bummer. I hope you keep drawing though- that’s exciting!
To expand I used the markers, the colored pencils, even the sharpeners and such for years and from 1995 until 2021 Prismacolor was owned by the Sanford LP company. In 2021 Prismacolor was bought by Newell brands and they discontinued free stock markers, some art shops were told to discontinue free stock pencils (free stock or open stock means you go pick a color instead of having to buy an entire set of markers or pencils), some products I can't find anymore and am happy I have two of. They have changed since 2021 and not for the better as some of us who were fans were hoping for some line redo's as the colors were added over the years and weren't in any particular order so we had always hoped for it to be relaunched, but it seems to be not a quality company anymore. Pre 2021 all the way back to 1856 the company was founded on graphite and then colored pencils for professional artists. In the 2010 to 2020 they were know for the fact their markers were actually blendable AND the color on the paper, especially their reds were the most resistant to fading as far as art markers went. Red stayed vibrant red for an extensive amount of time vs anything else that was available and similar with the brightness of the colored pencils. They were an exceptional company for over a century.
What about mont marte Kneaded eraser it is very hard.
Hmm I haven’t tried that brand. These are the ones I like: ruclips.net/video/JJUgw0Lpoac/видео.html
I have the Prismacolor kneaded eraser and what I do to make it a little bit more malleable is to place it on top of a warm pot lid for a few minutes. It gets a bit more malleable but then it returns to it usual state 😕
A great idea! But also, what an annoyance to have to do - that would make my long drawings take so much longer!
I open mine a month ago and I just added hair oil and it started getting softer
Curious about this solution. Did it last? Did it transfer oil to your paper?
had to buy one of these for a class, I kneaded it for about an hour and I'm pretty strong, it won't even stick to itself
Yep they’re the worst. Please write the company! So sorry you joined the bad eraser club 😢
Every Prisma eraser I've bought has been bad!! I thought it was me....like there was a secret technique or something I wasn't doing to get it soft! lmao....Thank the Lord.....I'm not nuts!!
It’s a “them problem”- definitely not a “you problem”😬! Please write them and tell them- it’s a shame they keep selling them!
Add me to the long list of dissatisfied customers. Art teachers often recommend kneaded erasers and I always think they must be crazy since my experience for a long while has been that they do not work better than white plastic erasers. Now I know why. I will search for Lyra and Fabre-Castell and throw away the Prismacolor. Sorry I am finally seeing this old news today. Thanks.
Yeah it’s a bummer but there are a couple of reliable brands out there, thank goodness!
Well I guess I can't contact them about it because I got this piece of crap more than a year ago and definitely don't have the packaging or receipts anymore and I'm not in a position where I can afford a new one and why tf would I want another copy of the same kind of product that is literally unusable? Like no Prismacolor needs to just give me $5 so I can go buy an actual KNEADED eraser
Yeah. The goal for all of us contacting them is they learn their product is consistently 👎🏼👎🏼 and remake the formula. Because it’s not just your $ but everyone who has come here to comment that they lost their $, too! It’s madness!
Darn it I was hoping I could fix it
I’m sorry. I’m not an alchemist🤣
Mine too! Never qorked at all.

I got two faber castell kneaded erasers for 3 dollars and it has far better quality than prismacolor. Prismacolor is far too tuff making my hands sore, i thought i just got a bad one so i bought it again still it was bad.
Yup. Faber castell and Lyra save us!
Purchased a prismacolor brand graphite set that came with the same kneaded eraser. It's garbage
Ugh. The worst. Please please let the company know! It’s awful.

yup, regular erasers are better but also these kneaded erasers are good: ruclips.net/video/JJUgw0Lpoac/видео.html
my dirty kneaded eraser is littreally loosing elasticity
That will happen over time as it absorbs more graphite/charcoal which changes the composition. That just means it’s time for a new one.
I just got a kneaded eraser in a PrismaColor sampler pack, and let's just put it this way it doesn't knead it solidified itself into a solid eraser. x(
I so feel your pain. Ugh.
@@Lzmstudio it sadly never fully reconstituted so I have a quasi-eraser
@@Zworykin I so get it. Buy a Lyra brand instead!!
@@Lzmstudio my original one I had from a Barnes and noble set of pencils dried out and started working again . 😅 But still lesson learned on buying sampler packs though... At least the other two prismacolor erasers are nice the kneaded one turned back into a rock. I'll have to check out the brand you mentioned. Thank you for the suggestion!
Prismacolor has become a total waste of money all around, Pencils included. They were great quality when Eberhard Faber used to make them.
I still used the colored pencils because I’m less of a colored pencil snob than a graphite snob😂
If anyone finds the kneaded erasers too soft give poster tack a try. It's a bit firmer holds the shape longer and works the same. I tried it out with Faber Castell poster tack and with the one we can buy here in the US I think it is called blue tack.the one from Faber castell comes in neon colors and in white.
Mine is pretty hard but useable
Not bad if it’s still useable!
In India we have Doms, Faber Castell and Prismacolor 😃
Ooh, I haven't heard of Doms. I'll have to look for it online!
I am literally MAD AS HELL... I've not had any satisfaction from Amazon I suppose because it only $5.00 ... I ordered my first one thinking it was white but it was grey...contacted customer service but they basically said...your fautl...too bad...the next one I paid for arrived quickly but yup hard as a rock... I am kinda furious because I am WAITING to work on a project that is almost complete ...who makes a customer wait for weeks??? I am livid.
Def contact the manufacturer as Amazon isn’t responsible for the problem. Newell brands needs to know about this issue and they will send you a replacement. For what it’s worth I’ve never seen a white kneaded eraser so likely the grey color is as it should be. Hope you get your project done!!🙂
Ngl, I went into this video thinking you had a trick to get them to be usable (I just bought one today because it's all my work carried).
The moment your solution was to complain to the company, my witch's cackle could be heard from space.
Well I’m an artist not a sorcerer so I don’t have some magic chemical solution. That responsibility falls on the company’s chemists!
@@Lzmstudio oh absolutely! Hopefully Staedtler's aren't too bad, otherwise I I'll have to order a General one online at some point lol

I'm here because I wanted to know what happened with these kneaded erasers. I'm pretty sure I'd used Prismacolor and liked it, so I ordered a box of 12...and they're all junk! What a waste.
They used to be reliable but not for the past 8-9 years in my experience which is far too long!

I wish you did, too. These erasers are the pits.
I thought you're actually going to show how to fix it.
We need the company to stop robbing people. I am not a chemist so I know of no way to fix it😞
Might be good exercise for arthritic hands
Good idea!! Oops but in the bad erasers they won’t knead so no exercise is possible🙃
I use a plastic Easter egg to store mine in.
Brilliant idea! Love it.
@@Lzmstudio thanx. Appreciate your video too. ☺️
You wonder if climate change has affected rubber plantations, like droughts in California are affecting the wine industry. One could try keeping these in a humidor with those foam disks with screens that allow you to recharge them with propylene glycol and distilled water once a month..don't all seven year olds have a humidor?
