I personally have come to the conclusion that time travel paradoxes don’t occur if you assume that the act of time travel also includes travel to a parallel universe. For example, the grandfather paradox is rendered moot if you consider that you are preventing your alternate self from existing in that universe, but you yourself existed in your universe of origin, and therefore will not cease to exist. Works when moving forward, as well, as you would enter a parallel universe where your absence rather than presence would effect events for the period you traveled.
Well I’ll be using this as a resource on how not to handle the weird time travel stuff I decided to implement in my D&D game because I hate myself and don’t want to have fun.
I've always been of the opinion that there *has* to have been at least one timeline in which John Conner existed without Kyle Reese as his father. Sure, he'd be a completely different person, but he'd have the same name and still lead the resistance. And given how many different people have played him at various points of his life, it actually fits pretty well, honestly, imo. Each timeline essentially has a slightly different John Conner, anyway (despite him always having Kyle Reese as his father) 🤷♂.
This is a terrific analysis of Terminator timeline. I never truly understood all the effects of the time travel and the Terminators, and how Skynet actually came about. You explained it all very well.
Personally, I don’t think of it as a bootstrap paradox. OG timeline: Sarah meets dude, gets pregnant. Dude disappears cause guys do that. Sarah has John (random dad). War with machines happens. John sends back Kyle. Still OG timeline: Kyle comes back, OG terminator movie happens. Sarah never meets dude. But NOW John has a different dad. Kyle. Sarah does whatever that leads up to T2. T2 happens. No bootstrap paradox. John never told Kyle he was his dad the first time cause he didn’t know. After T2 happens, John knew, so when it got to T3 and Salvation, John knew that Kyle was the dad of THIS VERSION of him. Wrapped up nicely in a bow.

T1 + T2 is where the story ends for me. I'd LIKE to consider the alternate, "Good Ending," as the true ending to the story. Everything that came after would be, "alternate universe," or "What If," type stories. The Series was ALOT closer to T2 and undid almost everything from T3, but still used some of the dates from T3 I feel erroneously.

I would like for a TV series to explore the "unaltered" main timeline; one where events occurr that lead to the creation of Skynet, Sarah meets someone (not Kyle since he hasnt been sent back in time yet), has their child who goes on to become the resistance leader who is on the verge of defeating the machines, which then come to the conclusion that sending a T800 to the past to terminate their adversary should give them the victory over humanity. The series would go through several time jumps with parallel stories being told: the origin of Skynet and Sarah raising John. We would get to see Sarah raise John in the midst of Judgement Day since she is supposed to be alive during that time. We get to see how a waitress grows into a survivor and being a mother raising a child in such terrible conditions. As for Skynet, does Miles Dyson still create it? what breakthrough in AI leads to Skynet? Is it as playful as Joshua in War Games to begin with? When does Skynet realize humans are the real danger to the world? Does Dyson realize the AI is going rogue but higher ups don't want the project stopped for fear of losing funding?
Terminator 1 and 2 are canon everything else is non canon. The films ended with sarah in a park in 2029 living a happy ever after life which is an actual filmed ending that i think should have stayed and the fact it exists makes it canon in my opinion. T3 and beyond are just dreams john has cause he knew of that reality.

I won't lie, I finally watched Genisys a Dark Fate. I honestly thought they were going to be some of the worst movies ever. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. They are way better than I thought they would be. Not as good as T1 and T2 but still pretty good
Time loops and time travel are just too stupid and hard to end, they could literally go on forever without any end in sight. I hate time based plots in pretty much any movie because those types of paradoxes just have no ending. There is ALWAYS a possibility a remnant survives and in a far future timeline after secretly rebuilding ends up creating a new loop just because. Then stuff keeps changing and it gets overall completely convoluted, I think T2 should be the cannon ending, with all the extra stuff just being non canon "what if" scenarios where they introduce a type of multiverse kind of like marvel, where there are tons of multiverses but only one cannon time line.
For me the T1-Salvation is the only "realistic" timeline that makes "sense". They tried hard to stay in their timeline and Salvation for instance have a lot of flirts back to the previous movies with hand-puppets, old Terminator versions from T3 and also using a brand spanking new T800 Arnold that looks the part before becoming more "human". So any other movie made after Salvation just doesn't make sense because the only main characters that's original from the previous movies is Arnold and Linda (yes T3 and Salvation too but they tried and Arnold still looks Robo). Not only that the later movies just mess up the timelines too much and changes systems/names etc. And recasting Arnold all the time, he's too old, stop making excuses for his age! It would've been fine to have side stories to Terminator, maybe other people from the Terminator timeline with missions or maybe Skynet sending out units in desperation to stay a live in other timelines and then get's hunted down by the resistance, who knows but anything but what they are doing, killing the franchise with recastings over and over and over....
