  • We had a fantastic stream with Dr. Sharon Saline, who is THE expert on ADHD and anxiety. With it being such a long live stream... we wanted to cut it down to some of the information we thought was important to highlight!

    Now, here's the highlights!
Anxiety erases memories of success and causes the anxiety to continue growing.
    - Anxiety is experienced cognitively, physically, and emotionally.
    - Anxiety involves the physiological brain, emotional brain, and thinking brain.
    - When anxiety is triggered, the amygdala takes over and the thinking brain becomes less active.
There are two types of worries that lead to anxiety: motivating worry about doing things and poisonous worry about things you can't control.
    - We can't eliminate anxiety, but we can learn how to turn down the volume on the worry.
    - Identifying bodily signals that indicate feeling triggered is important in managing anxiety.
To manage tendencies and feel more at ease in social situations, try slowing down, focusing on one thing at a time, and using a humorous phrase to laugh at impulsive actions.
    - Slowing down and making deliberate choices can help ease anxiety in social situations.
    - Focusing on one thing at a time can help reduce overwhelm.
    - Using a humorous phrase to laugh at impulsive actions can help relax others and make you feel better about yourself.
Making a list of things that make you feel better can help manage anxiety and ADHD symptoms.
    - Some examples of activities that can make you feel better include exercise, going outside, listening to music, reading a book, petting a cat, or having a cup of tea.
    - Planning ahead by making a list can be helpful because anxiety can make it difficult to think of coping strategies in the moment.
    - Instead of getting angry at what is causing anxiety, it is important to recognize the anxiety and practice self-soothing activities, such as holding a cup of hot tea.
Making mistakes is common for individuals with ADHD, and it can be a result of past negative experiences or fear of failure.
    - People with ADHD may have been humiliated or excluded for their mistakes as children.
    - Anxiety and panic can lead to last-minute completion of tasks for individuals with ADHD.
    - It is important to remember that everyone makes mistakes and to treat oneself with understanding and perspective.
    - Keeping a journal and focusing on the positive aspects of each day can help shift away from catastrophizing thinking.
Keep a pad of paper next to your bed to do a brain dump or create a “Worry Motel” to write down your worries.
    - Younger kids can decorate a shoe box, write their worries down on pieces of paper, and put them in the shoe box.
    - Adults can get worries out of their head and decide in the morning which ones to address.
    - When catastrophizing, engage in a "what if" process to understand the underlying fear.
    - Address the fear of not being able to manage a situation or pull through, rather than getting caught up in clutter.
Finding the right medication dose for ADHD and anxiety can be challenging, as it requires trial and error.
    - Some medications that help manage ADHD are not ideal for anxiety.
    - The medication process can be frustrating and many people give up due to the difficulties in finding the right medication and dosage.
    - But for people who find the right medication balance, it’s worth the effort.

Add a bit of dextromethorphan (eg Mucinex DM, Robitussin, or Delsym) in to get some antidepressant boost. There's a company that took bupropion and dextromethorphan, both generic drugs, and combined them into a single ER pill and released it for $1000/mo. But, if you're already on bupropion, you can make the combo yourself. I've heard that it's actually pretty effective.

Too many people -even professionals- take a "have you tried to not worry so much?" approach to anxiety. What helped me was to try and put some space between the thought and emotion. If you can sooth yourself, great, but if not, lean i to it. Write down your fear, what could go wrong and what are the consequences if it does. It may seem counterproductive but if you ride the wave of fear, you can kind of steer where it goes and lead yourself back to calmer waters.

I am on medication for my anxiety, but not for my ADHD (my body has a weird relationship with stimulant medication). Before the anxiety meds, I had horrible insomnia. The idea of "putting thoughts away," no matter what the method, was impossible for me. I used to relive nearly every mistake I've ever made, planning possible reactions to catastrophes that hadn't happened yet, and sometimes, just mentally completely renovating my home (that one is just the ADHD, not the anxiety).
Once I got the anxiety under control (sertraline is my friend, your mileage may vary), I have enough "bandwidth" to use the ADHD tools that I have been adding to my "survival kit" most of my life. While I long suspected that I had ADHD, I never realized that my level of anxiety was suffocating me. I was diagnosed with both the ADHD and the anxiety at the age of 57, a little over a year ago. Getting treatment for my anxiety is the best thing that I have ever done for myself.

I deal with (well, attempt to) anxiety and depression. Your videos usually hit some part of me, but this one was another that really hit perfectly. I'm at the point where I get totally frozen from the anxiety and assuredness that I am going royally screw things up on a daily basis. I used to try to explain it to people as voices or thoughts. That just muddled the understanding. They would typically go on about not listening or playing loud music to drown out the voices. They don't understand that it is not literal voices but feelings and thoughts that are there no matter what.

There was a lot of bullying and other issues that contributed, but I've finally realised that these were (at their core) an anxeity response, not a trauma one (or at least not the traditional sense). Although late diagnosed, coming to terms with my ADHD and the depression and anxeity co-morbitities, has been fundamental in my understanding of myself and how I engage with the world.

The explanation of the source of anxiety in neurodivergent kids makes me wonder if there's an overlap between Anxiety Disorder and CPTSD. I've got diagnoses for both, but I don't think there's tooooo much of a separation between them - CPTSD is the symptoms resulting from constant excessive stress, and my anxiety largely comes from.... constant excessive stress.
One of the linguistic problems of mental health is that labels make it seem like each little thing is its own thing, but most of the labels we use are just descriptions for a set of symptoms. The solutions I need for "Anxiety" and "CPTSD" are not going to be separate types of things, because they're intertwined issues.
Good interview cut, thank you for sharing!

Such a great topic. Prior to being diagnosed w/ adhd, my anxiety was through the roof and maybe why I lost so much hair and I'm a woman too, so that sucks. Anyway, after getting meds, it's sooooo much better, but now I'm late a lot more often and lack motivation that I used to have. I tried stopping meds, but the anxiety was terrible and I had such a hard time remembering what I was trying to do, so I'm back on meds. I need to find new tools to get to work on time and other things on time. Or maybe get a different job.

I have that same problem. I can't get to work on time to save my life (or my job for that matter...). I started realizing that a big reason for why I'm late is because I don't like my job and I subconsciously avoid the thing making me uncomfortable until urgency overpowers the avoidance and I rush around to get out the door to try to get there on time. Even alarms aren't working, I turn them off and go back to what I was doing.

I have been diagnosed with many things and adhd is the latest diagnosis but I also have an anxiety diagnosis. When I think about it, it started full blown 10 years ago after a traumatic experience, but I had periods of anxiety as a child especially in school as early as kindergarten feeling left out and when I was around certain people. Adhd meds definitely reacts to my state of mind. If I feel anxious, then I feel anxious on the meds, but I have been able to take a pause, distract myself and calm down in a way that I can feel reasonable on meds where as prior to meds, this could NEVER happen, especially in a busy store, I would be swallowed by the sensory stimulation, stares of people wondering wtf was wrong with me. I also have had over 10 years of therapy so maybe that is still retained in my mind (breath, pause, sit with uncomfortable emotions) and the traumatic memories are still there but I can see them from a distance instead of being swallowed up by them. I believe if children are properly diagnosed, they could probably avoid so many psychological ad social problems throughout their lives.

I have issues with anxiety all the time. The past few months I've canceled attending scouting events with my daughter, to which she's had to miss out (though she's said she doesn't mind, I have trouble believing her... I hate disappointing her). Also I've missed church over it. Most recently I was asked by our presiding county commissioner (who is a personal friend of mine) to sit on the local county history board. I gladly accepted, however when I was sent the link online to go through the formal process, I saw that I'm required to submit a resume. I hate writing, and I hate having to try and create a resume. I agonized for several days trying to write one, and just gave up. I called my commissioner friend and told him I change my mind about being on the history board and I was declining the position.

I have to laugh at how starting this video caused a wave of anxiety in me 😂 I can hardly think of a time where anxiety wasn't a feature in my life. One of my worst that I've had since childhood is an overwhelming awareness of my senses, and that I actually exist, and that one day I will cease to exist. I used cartoons to "forget," since I wasn't looking at another living being, but when there were no more cartoons on at night (grew up with 20 channels of cable tv), I would get next to no sleep. I still get that feeling every now and then, but I'm far more effective at brushing it off. OH! As for stimulants... I've used caffeine as my stimulant of choice, and it *reduces* my anxiety 😁

I have massive ass anxiety because out of my sight out if my mind I am always anxious to forget something. Since reminders also stress me out since I struggle with task switching/sudden interruptions idk what the hell to do outside of not having anxiety but letting everyone down.

    • @HowtoADHD
      @HowtoADHD  Месяц назад +2

Yeahhhh reminder and notification fatigue can be brutal... and struggles with task switching definitely doesn't help. Coaches and therapists may be able to assist in helping you find what strategies work best for you - and neurodivergent communities are often a great place to see what has helped others that might be worth trying and seeing if they work for you too! ADHD Support groups are a thing as well and some places do them virtually! And hopefully one day we can do an episode specifically on task switching.

@@HowtoADHDWell, it kinda goes a bit more so into auDHD territory and strategies that help me are often PDA strategies when ADHD strategies can make it worse. Unfortunately there isn't as much about and for auDHDlers and PDAlers

Yeah that's a mood, I think that's why I like reaching out to the community. There are some out there that have managed to figure out what works for them and just being able to talk it out helps me in some way... if it doesn't help me personally then I at least know I'm not alone in the struggle... that I can talk to people who just... get it.

@@toni2309I feel you because I'm in that mix as well. Personally, I've found only certain types of reminders to stress me out/irritate me. For me, another person reminding me or an alarm going off makes me hate life but writing down something or putting up a visual reminder in a place I'll pass by every day but isn't in my face all the time helps. Have you found that certain types of reminders are worse than others or do you get anxious constantly with all of them?

    • @sarahcb3142
      @sarahcb3142 Месяц назад +1

@@toni2309The other thing I do is sadly I've had to limit the number of things on my plate. So if I have tons of things planned with no downtime I get super overwhelmed. But if I limit them especially if I'm having a bad week I also get to limit the amount of mental space I need to remind myself of what I'm supposed to do. This sadly means I often have to opt out of fun social things if I've got work, and appointments, and projects during the week it's not ideal but it's the only way I can function.

I dunno, I have anxiety like nearly 100% of the time so there's not much help in noticing the signs of anxiety. I also think that a good amount of my anxiety is preemptive, like worrying about other people's perceptions of me or getting sick (again) - lots of things I don't have control over. CBT doesn't work for me either

This is a silly question, but I'm noticing there's a lot of advice that involves writing things down.
It sounds like a helpful idea, but whenever I try and practice things that involve writing before bed, I always end up loosing the book/pad I'm writing things down in, or it gets covered by clutter and I forget that it's there.
It's such a minor roadblock but is there alternatives or advice to avoid that? I guess the bigger task is to get less cluttered but that feels like a bigger goal. 😅

Great video Jessica! For many years, I always blamed my stuttering for make me suffer (teen years). People told me that I was fluent perhaps I hesitated here and there but was not a big deal. I always asked myself why I get so anxious in a situation when I had to speak. Then, I start to speak and nothing happens (no stuttering).... 3 years ago, I discovered that I had ADHD ( I am in my 40'S). The anxiety of speaking when you have a little stuttering problem can be multiplied by 5. I wonder if there is a study for ADHD and stuttering to explain this link... I took me a decade to get over it, but now I accept my anxiety/little stuttering better. It is still a challenge today. I hope I will find an specialist who will help me to react and feel better when the anxiety comes. Jimmy For Montreal :) ps: I will see the full vid. THanks.

With my generic Vyvanse I do notice some anxiety some days. Some days I just feel like I'm in go mode where taking deep breaths feel required. Other days I hardly notice it and can drink coffee with it. Im only on 10mg as an adult because the higher doses cause issues.
I think the manufacturer makes a difference. When held to the light one brand will be about 1/4 full where another brand will be 1/3-1/2 full both same dosage. I know it's filler but I do notice a different in how it effects me day to day.
I don't like the days I feel always on edge luckily it's not often.

Regarding the idea with failures and stuff,, I've found it helpful to ask myself and write down the, 'okay, worst case scenario, what happens?' And a lot of the time, it's not actually too catastrophic,, and even so, when you have that worst case scenario and it is bad, then it can help put you in a situation where either, you have a lot of things you didn't know how to approach, but one of them is way worse of a worst case scenario, so now you know that's your priority, or you have a plan in place of, "okay, worst case scenario comes to pass, how do I handle it?" Which often then leads you to things you can do to minimize the impact of that worst case scenario, either if it does go through, or to prevent the worst outcome for a more moderate, not ideal, but not catastrophic outcome,,,, it really helped prevent me from ruminating on it as much,, also important to note with it what you can change or control,, if its smth you cant impact, onc its iut if your heaf and you realise you cant actually control it, it can help you to stop worry about it as much, as theres nothing you can do, and for stuff you can impact, then its more clear what can be done and what is not as catastrophic as it appears
(ive included a minimally edited(so i dont dox myself or someone irl) list below with some examples from a day i did this, and i found it really helpful,,, theres a lot here, bc i was really stressed, which is what led me to using it, but you could prolly do it with even one or a couple things too and itd be helpful!)
*[If i dont get them done by their due dates was the worst case scenario i was running for each of these iirc]*
Watch *[videos of choreo for a musical i was in]* -I forget smth during the rehearsal or mess up and they think badly of me
Career presentation *[readings for class and a powerpoint about one of them, the readings are what the just skip refers to]* -just skip the others and bs it
Pilot *[study]* resources-I ask an extension and maybe get part marks off 5%
Daily check in *[question to ask participants for research study, actually ended up using this one and it was fine, so clearly a not actually worst case scenario once i wrote it down, so i stopped worrying,,, reflections 1 and 2 that are the next 2 points are the same]* -I remove daily check in or write very simple(ie, on a scale of 1-10 physically how are you feeling, 1-10 mentally? Are there any factors related to today that may impact your singing/ practice(ie, recently sick, didn't get much sleep, have a test/assignment due that you're worried about, tired, unprepared)
Reflection 1-put a simple "how did you feel during this practice as compared to other/your average practice? Did anything stand out?"
Reflection 2-write the same as the other reflection but just with a list of the variables and "how do you feel this impacted your singing/practice?" On a scale of reduction in quality, to no effect, to improvement in quality,, also a note about "have you ever tried any of these on your own?"/a do you fidget type thing
    Comp recordings-I rush choosing takes
Assignment 2 acoustics--I check in with *[prof]* about alternate plans
Collab/vid edit-i get kicked from the collab or taken off the editing and tell them I'm sorry but with school I haven't had time
*[International exchange trip application smth or other, (i dont exactly remember what part this was since I had just written the country name)]* -consequence is not getting to do the trip,, would like to avoid,,, could also be not having time to do the *[scholarship application]* ,, would also like to avoid
*[Song to get music of from uni prof for music festival]* -ask *[voice teacher]* later if I could get it
Other festival scores *[aka music books]* -i have to say sorry and show them we've bought them?
*[Song i wrote]* score alignment-put in a note saying it's different *[the audio was a ver w dif insts than the score]*
*[Song i need to record]* -takes longer
*[Dance for a song I need to film]* -takes longer

I especially get really bad anxiety when my birthday comes around. As a kid, we could only ever have house celebrations, just my mom, dad, and sister. I didn't have my first feiend party until i was 16. A bunch of people did show up, but it was mostly my sister's friends. I've only had one other birthday party where a bunch of people showed up and that was at 22 because a close friend of mine and her sister planned/hosted it and they were known for their parties, so a lot of their friends showed up. Every time I've tried to plan one, one person might show up, but most of the time no one does. I really wanted to do something big for my 30th birthday this year but the closer it got, the louder the voice telling me "No one will show up, who wants to feel that kind of rejection on their 30th birthday?" This same fear is what keeps me from inviting people over or out period. So i just ended up cancelling everything. My husband and I just got a babysitter and went to see the new Ghostbusters movie instead. A big party may have been nice, but it was just as nice knowing i at least have one person that always wants to spend time with me.

I want to ask something, so last year in the summer I was finally able to have a therapist and I was able to speak with a psychiatrist. She asked me why I thought I might have adhd and I told her everything, she said i definitely might so she gave me a paper to fill out for ocd and she said that it may be both but more anxiety. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to keep on investigating bc my insurance couldn’t cover it anymore but she said that I may have either OCD or ADHD or anxiety but I just don’t show it as much on normal days. Especially because she found out that the pills I would take help people with ADHD and I told her ever since I had that new pills, I’ve been calmer. I also realize that I just can’t stop moving my feet or legs even if I’m not that stressed out and when I sleep I tend to twitch very badly and wake myself up sometimes so I just want to know bc I don’t think my parents believe in that.

Me too! But the teachers labeled them as "temper tantrums" which was really damaging to a young girl's psyche. Like no? I'm not having a tantrum? I'm having trouble breathing and I'm crying uncontrollably. Scoffing at me and telling me to knock it off is going to make my anxiety attack brought on my social circumstances worse not better.
I'm now a preschool teacher and I see kids struggle with the same emotional disregulation that many of us ADHDers do. Many of my colleagues react with that same level of disgust that my teachers did towards me and my panic attacks but I now have a ton of empathy for these little ones. Most of them will one day be able to master their emotions and be able to regulate them but for now they can't. And even if they never do, even if they have panic attacks as an adult, it's important to have empathy and realize they aren't giving you a hard time they are having a hard time. Most of us would have done anything to change that back when we were kids. I'm sorry you had to go through panic attacks as well.

Second Opinion! ... Along with learning more about other ADHD / AuDHD people's experiences, which might remind you of, "Actually, yeah ... I Do That!"
      ❤️‍🩹🧠
My initial few-minutes over the phone with my first Psych doctor had similar results when I first realized and mentioned I might be Autistic. She didn't seem to think I was. It turns out that, not only wasn't I familiar enough with recognizing those "yeah, I do that" traits, but also that ADHD and Autism had been conflicting with each other in my brain and I had been concealing my struggles for so long that I didn't seem to "fit" the criteria. It was after learning more about others' experiences that I began to understand myself better: "I have both ADHD and Autism, and the struggle is real."

@user-es3xe4de4c -- I strongly second everything @rebeccamay6420 said. Educate yourself so you know how to present your worries and noticed symptoms (and when/how you mask), get a second opinion (and third and forth etc. if you must; too many "professionals" still think girls can't be autistic, that ADHD can be "outgrown" and many other idiotic things) from a hopefully more experienced and informed doctor. Making flashcard reference notes for the appointment can help if you're afraid you'll forget, just be sure to include on them personal examples of how noted symptoms manifest for you individually (ex. of how symptom disrupted your work/school success, social/family life, etc.) so that your diagnosing doc doesn't think you're reading from a drug-seeking script.

@Cheesepuff8 -- Or maybe it's a viscious cycle. Our symptoms cause near-constant stress, the regulation of which requires near-constant spoons usage (which is especially exhausting when not medicated and so everything you do is on "manual" mode in your brain, even just existing), which causes fatigue, which itself means less spoons to spend coping around our symptoms and regulating our stress, and the knowing of this causes more stress and self-regulating, which means we have even less energy still to use to manual-mode our way through our day and so we are even more at the mercy of our ever-worsening symptoms, which causes stress...

Is it bad that I have 11 symptoms of ADHD

    • @susa5846
      @susa5846 15 дней назад

Why should it be bad? I guess most people watching this channel have signs of ADHD or a diagnosis. If you have "only" 11 symptoms I guess you're new to the issue OR you didn't recognize everything because it is hard to see on one self. OR you're recognizing everyone have sometimes a hard time. What is right. But with ADHD that is everyday effecting your life, giving you a hard time. If you live like that your whole life like me you won't see differences, because you only know it like that.
And you can find some really good solutions that function for yourself if you're one your own but may not work e. g. with other people like family, work or school.
And some can mask very effective. I e. g. was always good at school. I would always answer questions because it helped me staying awake and focused. I loved tests and couldn't understand why others feared them. I always had good marks, the teachers loved me. Got diagnozed with 40 years. I can sit still. But it came with a cost even I didn't see. I was masking so hard I wasn't aware I was masking. I tried medication and it really helps with my axciety and to have an easier day. But it doesn't solve the ADHD.
So no, it is not bad to find symtoms of ADHD. It is a chance to look for better solutions. I hope this may help you. Have a nice day! 🍀
