      @vcwomack1 3 года назад +8

      Completely agree! Mine didn’t turn out “perfect”, but that was more due to the lumber, definitely not due to the instructions!
      One thing that I would recommend is to do the process as the video shows: In the SAME order! I did the cuts as well as all of the drilling, countersink, safety pilot holes, etc. at one time as well as sanding the dowels. I did this because I knew that I was having back surgery in the next few days and I wanted everything to be ready to go when I felt like finally hanging the shelves...
      I had to go back and re-do a bunch of things due to this...(again- totally MY fault 100%). But the biggest pain was that I didn’t sand down the dowels enough...”lightly sanding” them was NOT what I considered lightly! Took way more sanding than I would have thought to get the actual shelves to easily slide on and off! So, if you decide not to do in order of the video/instructions...be forewarned!

    Seriously you guys who don’t own tools, go buy a $10 hand saw and a $20 used drill. I own some really good tools but there are so many ways to build something. No one goes out and buys a woodshops worth of tools in one outing, you slowly build a collection over many years. The tools you buy for this project will come in handy in the future, plus you’ll get a better shelf and pride in your work

      Harbor Freight has really great prices if you only need one or two of these tools. I bought an amazing 5” orbital sander for $26. Once you buy it, you can tackle so many projects. Same thing goes for their drills, bits, clamps, etc. You might spend $100-$150 on tools but then never need to purchase them again (or at least not for a long time).

    What I like about your channel is that when you say it can be done using a drill and circular saw, you actually use a drill and a circular saw. Lots of other woodworking channels say the same thing but then build their project with the $1000 table saw and the $500 miter saw and the $400 drill press and mill all the wood with expensive planers and jointers. Good job showing us beginners how to do it.

    Very good method for making floating shelves!!! After a lot of research I decided on this method and it worked great. A couple of things to keep in mind, my home is a older home and has lath and plaster walls so they are not 100% flat and true so I had to do some minor sanding of the attachment bracket, secondly drill the holes before cutting to 1 1/2", I forgot and was a bit of a pain. I ended up making the 1/2" dowels a bit longer, they extended 4" into the shelf. I went with a routered ogee edging on the top of the shelves to get rid of the rounded edge of the 2X6.
    I plan on making more shelves.

      The tools required for this can be gotten for around as much as you’d pay for the shelves, Pre-made. BUT, you can use the tools for further projects :)
      Realistically all the tools you need is a drill and drill bits. You can hand sand it, and have it cut by the store, or spend $30 on a circular saw :) definitelyblook into a cheap drill and circular saw. You could prob find at a garage sale for cheap, too! Heck Facebook garage sale sites. They sell for next to nothing at garage sales and things bc people don’t typically go there for tools
