You probably kind of were. There used to be a lot of UI mods that used hidden chat channels to distribute information to other users with the mod. So if someone with the mod is in the area when it spawned, they could have alerted and sent the location to people who were AFKing for it.

I farmed them in Silithus back then on the biggest german server. All you needed was a hunter with eagle eye and a few chars with herbalism placed in the area, i also had two accounts back then, there were no ticks or addons. The hunter was also placed behind the tavern so i didn't have to wait 10 secs for logging onto the herbalism char that was on the same account.
There was one china farmer hunter who did this 15h/day in Silithus and two or three other people who did it regularly, also a few clowns literally riding in a cycle 12 hours a day. Sometimes there also were bots but the good thing was that you could kite them to Ungoro down the wall where they got stuck. It was interesting watching them, they get around every obstacle these days only the walls around Ungoro could hold them back long term.
There was nothing more satisfying than having your dwarf rogue already dancing on the last lotus spot when all the china farmers arrived too late.

I think the luckiest I ever got in Classic was when I was Black Lotus hunting, I had an entire night of no luck, warring with the Horde and bickering with my own Alliance, I decided to log off for the night right next to a spawn point. I logged in early the next day for a short sesh and there it was, waiting for me. Literally woke up to casually find a small fortune right in front of me. Had a great day that day

I took over the Burning Steppes with my guild to get some lotuses once. We had a massive battle against the horde faction that normally kept it locked down. After a vicious back and forth battle across the entire zone we finally drove them out completely...only to within minutes have their alliance alts flood into the zone to contest every spawn point.

But then it's ruined by what Sandbox games also have and shouldn't, which is players just using the limitations of the game baing a game to spoil the fun.

@Professor Thinker More like you're the dumb one; unlike you we got lotuses doing that. Forcing out the faction that controlled a zone with PVP is being driven off by every definition if they had to crawl back with inferior numbers of alliance to run around trying to contest our raid. Then I got us into the frost juju market because the profits when the items dropped per raid member made black lotuses irrelevant and funded guild provided flasks for the rest of classic.

Everyone forgets that in Vanilla there were herb nodes in AV (as well as land mines) that only spawned once at the start. There were a couple of Black Lotus each game. Blizzard eventually removed these nodes so that people would "PvP" in AV instead of picking herbs. We never got this in classic.

I played on Firemaw and I remember the cost of the flasks were double the cost of the Black Lotus. Gromsblood was an easy farm at Dire Maul with my Warlock, my Warlock was Herb and Mining. The Stonescale oil was easy as I just popped an audio book on and fished at night when nothing much was happening on the server. So I ended up half farming and half buying from auction house to make flasks, I make 2 Flasks and sell them, I bought 4 Black Lotus and made 4 Flasks, sold them and bought 8 Black Lotus, and so on and so on.

@@timross1568 That apperantly used to be the case in the old days. But with classic it's at least not the case anymore. It is the same boss we are talking about - Mushgog. I have tested with my friends about the "...would cause herbs to respond every 3 minutes if you didn't kill him." theory for, well, obvious financial reason lol.
Sadly it only spawns the herbs once on that fixed timer. (unlike how some suggest is on a random timer, at least in the case of classic server) You can not pick the herb, keep the boss alive, and make it spawn more lotus. Or else I would be able to help myself with abusing it, dumping a bunch of lotus on the market, making people ask question, and made it an open secret.

When we were lucky on rare occasions we had the zone to ourselves and stacked quite a bit of lotus. Most of the time we were racing to get the next spawn. Occasionally we had to fight. Most of the time it was toxic PMs or zone chat trying to get in our heads or discourage our efforts if we missed a spawn. I'm pretty sure those mafias were selling them for RMT. We were stacking for future raids.
    Good times!

I found 4 black lotuses during my time in vanilla classic. The first, was within literally 5 minutes of hitting 300 herbalism in the burning steppes. As soon as I saw it, I ran over, started to pick it, and had an opposing faction hunter attack me. As a rogue, I blinded him, picked the lotus, and got away. The second memorable lotus, was when I had finally succeeded in completing the benediction quest for priest in EPL, and literally as I was riding back to lights hope chapel, proud as can be of my shiny new priest exclusive staff, and I spot a black lotus ready to be picked. Couldn't have been a better time, I'd struggled a fair bit with the benediction quest and I was just so relieved to have it completed, the lotus was a nice little cherry on top.

I remember in nov 2019 when the battlegrounds were added, almost everyone was grinding BGs. Myself and a few guildies completely neglected the pvp grind and instead embarked on the lotus grind. Because everyone was busy locked away in battlegrounds, and also because of the holiday season, the Lotus zones were pretty much deserted for a couple months. We used the hunter eagle-eye trick and we each had 2 lvl 60 herbalists, so we were able to lock down both silithus and burning steppes. We were able to get probably 90% of the lotus that spawned in those zones between nov-january. Once people were finishing their pvp grinds and it became apparent to the average player just how valuable lotus were going to be, competition for them spiked hard in late january and we couldnt get them nearly as easily anymore. Once we started seeing dozens of lvl 1s in the lotus zones a month or two later we knew our lotus days were over. Regardless, I was able to build up a stockpile of 350 lotus during those months and never had to farm gold for the rest of classic after that.

During the later stages of classic it got so bad with the prices and the lvl 1 bots on my server that our guild resorted to creating our own "cartel" in epl. Guild members who wanted could join, we had a shared timer, people were responsible for checking 2-3 spawn points. It wasn't a fun time or a flawless system, but it sure was better than the feeling of having to fork up 200-300g for a lotus sold by known bot-cartels. Luckily Blizzard added the change to how lotus spawned not long after we resorted to this method, it was probably one of the best changes they did during classic.

i farmed lotus in classic, spent at least 1k hours solely doing so. each zone spawn was independent so they could spawn at the same time, only 1 per zone, they were initially on timers that allowed them to spawn 45min-1hr15min after being picked, so there was a 45min window where it would not spawn then 30min that it would spawn. each zone had roughly 18-25 spawns in them. successfully picking was dependent on 2 things basically, if it spawned near you, and if you were looking fast enough. you'd use a hunter with eagle eye macro to chain it across zone and your minimap with herb find on would show it. tauren had 100% pick chance, and it was extremely frequent that multiple ppl would show / fight over lotus at the same time. if you got the pick they sold at some point on some servers for 200g, with multiple char across multiple zones this was the best gold farm in the game. it was incredibly rewarding and i miss it.
this then got patched later in the game i want to say during middle / late phase 5 (AQ) to where the timer was now random 10-60min, with potential for multiple to spawn in that window. ive never seen 2 spawn at one time, but i have seen them spawn quite quickly. it honestly made farming more difficult and tedious bc with old timers it was more predictable, and new timers forced farmers to search more frequently for them.

After I picked it I would play on another character for ~35 minutes then go back to my hunter and spam eagle eye. I had a unique spot in the center that would get me to any spawn within 2-3 clicks.
I remember the excitement of seeing one; and the thrill of trying to be the first one to get to it. When I spotted the lotus, only a few times did someone pick it; one time a warrior tried but agro’d all the banshees. My hunter of course had pet and FD. And it was very often that someone would arrive after I picked it. There were hardly any hunters doing herbalism. A lot of the Chinese gold gamers/bots were mining RTV

Before the quality of life changes there would only be one lotus per hour +-15 minutes. I would perch up on a high spot and utilize farsight and continuously scan the spawns during the spawn window. I had a 90% chance of getting the lotus and would get 7-13 per day. Others took notice then started using alts with Eagle eye which was superior. It got so competitive I made a agreements with alliance to share the zone if they killed the Alts camping the zone.
