Steve wrote this song because this really happened to him. In several interviews he's done, he said he was 18 and working at a recording studio as a recording engineer trying to get into the music business. He got off early from work and went home to his apartment he shared with his girlfriend at the time. His girlfriend wasn't there. He said he was looking out the window, and his then girlfriend pulls up with this other guy in a Corvette. He said they started locking lips. When she got to the apartment, he asked her what was going on. She tried to convince him that he didn't see that happen. Anyway this really happened to Steve and he wrote the song. The Na, na, na, na, na at the end is his way of taunting her. Whoever she was and heard this song, she knew it was about her and what it all meant. Pick any Journey song during the Steve Perry era and you will not be disappointed. Steve delivers 1000+% every time. His live performances are better than the actual studio recordings.

@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT
_it was for revenge_
First time hearing that story. i'm sure whoever she is has regretted cheating on him as i'm sure she is not as well off as Steve is. What a fool she was. 💯🤣😱
Lol, count the Na Na’s.
Back on the 70’s and 80’s when some got what they had coming to them, people we would sing..
Na na na na na, na na na na na na. He just changed the melody but the numbers of Na’s are the same.
Nothing like getting back at your ex through a song. And boasting about how successful you are. That is poetic justice.
Always loved the childish schoolyard “Na Na, Na Na” right after “Now it’s your turn, girl, to cry!”
So perfect and I think it’s missed on many who hear it. It’s just perfect!
Agreed. It makes me smile every time.
Not on Me! Luv IT :-D
I told my son this, and he was shocked. I said, yeah lots of people don’t get that. I always thought that was clever.
@@TheCatandCrystalWitch I actually used to hate this song purely due to the extended NA NA, Na Na Na’s back when it was new till one of my buds was like “dude, he’s making fun of her. For a looooong time.” And I was like “oh…….yea, that makes sense now. Okay, I like this song now.” Lol 👍
I'm 57 and didn't catch that until you mentioned it! Duh on my part! Thanks!!
Have you done "Lights"? That's my favorite Journey song. Steve Perry has one of those golden voices. Fantastic group. Neal Schon is a fantastic songwriter and guitarist.
OMG Lights /Stay Awhile live from Osaka 1980! It's fantastic
I’m with ya on that! My family had moved to the Midwest for 3 years. Then moved back to The North Bay area(Santa Rosa) I was 15, and the first weekend we were back, I got on a bus to San Francisco. I was listening to a headset, when we topped the hill and I got my first glimpse of the city again. Just then Lights came on and I lost it. I was so happy.
I love love love “Lights”!
I swear, Steve Perry's vocals are so freakin' diverse, he could sing any genre! 💜🔥👏💜
You know it's a great song when you can groove and rock to the NaNaNa for over a minute and still love it!!!!
Steve Perry's voice can't be duplicated no matter how hard people try!!!
Never thought about it that way before, but - you are so right! Think the "na na na" part might be my favorite part of the whole song.
You are right. Steve Perry has the unique and amazing voice. I absolutely love it. ❤️
There is an Asian guy that has the same voice believe it or not! Heard him on UTUBE with Steve. Wish I could remember his name. I was in shock. Sounds exactly the same.
Amen!.
Mother Father Sister Brother live performance is FANTASTIC The range Steve Perry hits will give you chills.
One of my ULTIMATE favorite bands. Steve Perry is one of the vocalists I admire and look up to as a vocalist myself. He is exquisite!❤😎👍🏻. They don’t call him “the Voice” for nothing.

Did you know Jon Bon Jovi is the one that dubbed Steve "The Voice"?
"Girl Can't Help It"..."Send Her My Love"..."Lights"..."Don't Stop Believin'"..."Only The Young"...all these were hits for them that I don't think you guys have done yet. I used to put their Greatest Hits CD on when I went to bed to fall asleep to...ha. Love Steve Perry's voice!!
Faithfully, Open Arms, Lights, Don't Stop Believing, When a Man Loves A Woman, The Party's Over, Wheels in The Sky....I could go on and on. All great hits.
All of these ❤
All good ones. Especially Lights!
Agreed. Especially "Lights" and "Faithfully". Awesome choices!
All the above but nobody ever says Stone In Love and that is such a good song I loved him I loved every single song and I just thought this would be different to Jam 2
greatest American vocalist ever!...those are all great songs, but I prefer the b sides
A Must Hear from Journey… “Send Her My Love” & “Who’s Crying Now” and “Lights” are truly insane. Steve Perry’s voice and the jazz side of their music is one not to miss. Trust!
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Don't Stop Believin' " !!! Steve 'The Voice' Perry.
Yes!!!❤
I just rewatched the last episode of The Sopranos 5 minutes ago. Lol
JAY N AMBER THIS WAS 1979 THE GOOD OL 70s
That acapella harmony at the end gets me every dang time. Next up should be "Feelin' That Way / Anytime" with Steve and Gregg sharing vocal duties.
I seriously hope they react to that one!
@@magneto7930 That acapella, need to be followed with "City Of The Angles"
Excellent choice !!!! Lights & Anytime also !!!
One of Steve Perry's best vocals with Journey. Song is too short, and you didn't get how it goes into City of the Angel's add on. Lights, Stone In Love, Who's Crying Now, and Lovin Touching, Squeezing are a must listen to
City of Angels is awesome!
The amazing thing about Steve Perry is that he is technically flawless, yet still can make you feel every emotion in a song. As for his range, there are songs where he reaches G5 and A5 notes. On "Lay It Down" off the Escape album, he goes straight up to G5, then cascades back down through a whole series of notes perfectly, then jumps straight back up to the G5 and plays with it for awhile before going into a long bend on a lower note. The man's not of this world!
Ya gotta do Journey live, to really appreciate their incredible talent. Please react to "Mother, Father" live in Houston 1981. Steve's vocals, and Neal's guitar shredding will blow your minds! 🤯
Naa
This is TH EREAL JOURNEY, FRIENDS! IN THE 70S, IT WAS A SMORGASBORD OF GREAT TUNES, BY TTHE 80S, IT WAS LIKE WATCHING THE SINGLS.
Robert G, this is live.
Yes Robert!!!!
Also whos crying know from Houston is fire great guitar solo also
The man with the golden voice… Steve Perry. 🙌🏻 Reiterate what a few others have already said, Mother, Father live in Houston ‘81 is phenomenal. His tone is unmatched. Great reaction y’all
"Send Her My Love" is an awesome Journey song, sung live at an outdoor stadium, if you get that video.
Yes it is great too!
Steve Perry is the greatest male singer ever! This song was based on a true story. Steve Perry caught his girlfriend at the time with another guy. You should react to their live version of Still they ride, Patiently, and Mother Father. You will be blown away!
They were amazing live! Steve Perry’s voice is just on his own level. 😂 Not many can sing like him.
Saw them once in San Francisco. What I remember is Steve Perry's soaring voice....and white linen pants. With the lights behind him....*sigh* What can I say. I was in my teens, it was the 70's, and he was sooo romantic....and gorgeous!
Saw them twice back in the early eighties and they were outstanding!
@@mauramanning852 saw them in 82 or 83. Still one of my all time favorite concerts. Wish I had kept the tee shirt, but I think, like the album, that I literally wore it out!
@@mauramanning852
Too funny! 😂
@@vernhoke7730 Three times, late 70's and early 80's. All at the Seattle Coliseum.
Don't forget his contribution to USA for Africa's "We are the World," one of the great vocal highlights that stood out even among Ray Charles, Tina Turner, and all those other legends.
You guys would love their song Any Way You Want It!
I love a lot of Journey songs, just love them, but "Any Way You Want It" might be my favorite. It's definitely in the top three or five, ha.
Definitely! A song Jay would love to hear. A harder rock song from Journey
@@nancysmith8626 it's so hard to pick 1 favorite Journey song when they have such an outstanding list to choose from but Any Way You Want us my choice for #1, also.
Steve Perry said that at the 'We Are the World' sessions, Bob Dylan came up to him and said 'You got some pipes kid..' The greatest compliment he was ever given in his words.
If you watch the full making of videos, you will see that Dylan had to rehearse his part over and over in special sessions to get it the way they wanted it.
Steve just walked up and sang his part like falling off a log.
Journey is ICONIC! ❤
Amo
My sister had this song on a record, and we used to blast it over and over again. SUCH a fun song! It starts off all sultry with that bass and drums, and Steve's amazing vocals are gorgeous, and then you've got the "na na's" at the end which are really fun to harmonize with. So glad you both liked it!! This is definitely up there in my top 5 Journey songs, for sure.
I have to mention "Stone In Love" by Journey, as well. You will enjoy it also as many others songs mentioned that you have not heard. Oh "Still They Ride" is also a wonderful song by them nobody has mentioned yet.
Yes. Two of my favorites.
Still they ride is my favorite!!
Was really never a Journey fan in the 80 or 90's.. But they've grown on me in the past 10 years.
This song is pretty much saying "Hey, Karma's a b!tch."
When you guys saw the title and assumed it would be a love song I started to laugh. This is my favorite "revenge" song. Listen better to the lyrics. I love how the 3 verses have different scenarios of Lovin Touchin Squeezin -- 1) each other 2) another 3) another on her. That chorus of taunting her like a child in the playground with the "Na Na Na's" is awesome. One of my favorites from them. You have to do a song that spotlights better Neal Schon's guitar. I recommend "Anyway You Want It". Amazing vocals and a blistering guitar solo. Or "Stone In Love". Also a banger!!
Journey is still around with another singer but no one can replace Steve Perry.
My absolute fave journey song👏👏👏👏
Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury are the two best rock vocalists of all time in my opinion. Great song and great reaction!
I would add Chris Cornell, as well. The three greatest.
Paul Rogers - Bad Company is up there too
Dio.
Klaus Meine - Scorpions
Well said!
As a teenager during the 70's, not only did I love Steve Perry's voice but his hair!!! He had the most beautiful hair!!
I used to think he was Native American!
I loved his butt! Lol!
@@TheDivayenta He got his hair from his Portuguese parents.👍
@@louieflash7190 indeed. Same with Nuno Bettencourt! Gorgeous Portuguese hair!
Yeah, loved his hair, I thought he was Native American as well til found out he wasn't.
A producer ran Steve Perry's voice through an auto tune program to see just how perfect Steve's voice was. As it turned out, the auto tune actually made his voice sound worse. It couldn't improve on perfection.
💯
One of the best bands of all time. Love Steve Perry and this song is crazy good. His vocals are just amazing here.
The transition from this song into City of the angels on the album is one of the most memorable of my childhood. Awesome album. Awesome concerts.
The AOR radio days, when they would play a whole album on Sunday nights. MTV killed all that
i can't hear these two songs separately from each other. when this song ends i immediately want to hear "City of the Angels." BRB, gonna go listen to the album in its entirety now, lol
MUST watch "MOTHER, FATHER" live in Houston by Journey. It will blow you away! Best live performance ever!
It wasn’t until I heard a cover of this song at a club in Chicago that it home that I realized this is a blues song. Straight up blues.
Steve's vocals r so phenomenal. Sounds better live than recorded. Their song "Mother, Father" live has to be one of my ultimate favs. His vocals in it r so incredible. Thanx so much, stay groovy, Peace
Yes, Steve's performance of this song during a concert in Houston may be the best live male vocal performance I have ever heard.
Classic early Journey! 🤘🏻 That, "Na-na-na" line, so clever..."Na na nana boo-boos"! 🤘🏻😄
Love how they cut out all the instruments at the end and you can really hear how amazing those harmonies are
This
There is not a bad song sung by Steve Perry. His voice is what made Journey what it was.
The Eagles, Washington D.C., 1977. "Take It To The Limit", with bassist, Randy Meisner on vocals. It is one of the great live performances in the genre.
PLEASE DO NOT MISS IT!!!
Have you heard his solo album? I had it in the 80's, but need to revisit it. I remember it being pretty good.
@@JoelWelter Actually, I have not.
@@geneticrex Heart's On Fire, I think was the big tune for him.
The Voice is just who he is...plain and simple. No need to question how or why but to accept and enjoy the ride. Now I need to pop on my Ipod and listen to all their hits, lol. Deep dive indeed.
Other greats from them...Stay Awhile, Don't Stop Believin', Any Way You Want It, Who's Crying Now, Lights, Send Her My Love, After the Fall (you want to hear a fabulous note, he's got a doozy for you), Chain Reaction, Stone In Love, Patiently, The Eyes of a Woman, Be Good to Yourself, Still They Ride, Feeling that Way/Anytime (two separate songs that usually would run right into each other), Girl Can't Help It, Once You Love Somebody, I'll Be Alright Without You, Why Can't This Night Go On Forever (another great hit it and hold it note near the end).
You gotta hear "foolish Heart" from Steve Perry. Just an absolute moving song.
This song was Journey's very first Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late summer of 1979. The song peaked at the #17 spot. By the way, this song was Steve Perry's debut as the new lead singer of Journey back then. What a banger of a song indeed!!!
You guys are hitting all my suggestions today!
“American Girl” by Tom Petty is a MUST! Will definitely have Amber dancin in her chair! ❤
I AGREE!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
"Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" was written by lead singer Steve Perry. It's a gut-wrenching tale of love-gone-wrong, with the desperate opening lines, "You make me weep, I wanna die," and an extended fade of "na na"s, as there are no more words to describe the pain. Perry didn't make this stuff up: according to the liner notes for Journey's Time3 compilation, this was a true story. He watched through the window as his girlfriend at the time got out of a Corvette and gave the driver a long, loving kiss goodbye. He calls this song "love justice."
You hit a home run with this one. Steve Perry’s voice is mesmerizing. Love everything about Journey. Although Steve left the group, they still play to sold out audiences. Thanks for your reaction to this. 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦
Except they missed the meaning of the song
A classic. Have always loved this song.
I’ve been dying for this song!!!! Amber, J , ACDC PLEASE!! Ride on!!
It took a long time for me to realize the entire last half of the song-Na na na na-is the same as what children say on the playground like HA HA HA 🤣 it’s been my favorite part of the song since because I’m still a child at heart and, damn it, it’s fun to see adults have some childish humor every now and then ❤
So many great tracks. Send Her My Love is my favorite. Saw them on the Escape tour in 1981. Phenomenal concert.
Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury. The two best voices ever Steve can’t beat Freddie’s showmanship though.
💯
I knew you'd love this one guys & if you love this song, then you gotta react to their Mother Father song, his vocals in that is awesome like this one too.😎🎸👌
"Lights" is a whole vibe. "Open Arms" is an amazing love song. Steve Perry's voice is just 😍!!
Love Journey. Steve Perry could sing to me all day and night. Great reaction. You should do more Journey reactions
Who's Crying Now is another great song by them, but seriously you can't go wrong with any song by Journey!
"Don't Stop Believing" is my favorite then this one. Steve Perry's voice is liquid gold, he's special!
Part of what makes Steve Perry great is how emotive his voice is.
Still They RIde is the best of their songs I think. Amazing vocals.
Journey and Foreigner were 2 of my favorite bands when I was in high school.
Journey is a fantastic band, very popular band🔥✨💥
I am heart broken 💔 about Jeff Beck’s passing, please play some of his incredible music. I’ve loved Jeff since the mid 60’s & will until my dying day!
RIP Jeff Beck 🎸💎❤️🩹🙏🏾. Check Jeff & Beth Hart at Kennedy Center Awards honouring Buddy Guy ☮️😻🇨🇦
AWESOME reaction pick love Journey! Steve Perry once stated in an interview that growing up, Sam Cooke was his idol and we can see the influence he had on Steve hearing the soulful side of his vocals. Listen to Nothing Can Change This Love - by Sam Cooke, and you we AMAZED by the similarities between that and this song!
Perry was quite the heart throb in the 70s and 80s. Always plenty of ladies at their concerts back then. Saw them live at Notre Dame back in 83 on their World's Apart tour. Great memories.
Journey was one of the best concerts I've ever been to!!! Steve Perry live ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. It starts with the girl he loves us loving touching and squeezing another... Then moved to the one she's now with us loving touching and squeezing another. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Still waiting on something by Ricky Nelson....one of the biggest stars of the 50s.
This was the 1st journey song I ever heard. I wasn't even 10 years old yet, but they have been favorites ever since. Plenty to choose from but my next ones would be "Stone in Love," "Feeling that way/Anytime," and "Just the same way."
Journey is one of the greatest bands ever. Best song is "Lights."
Their best lineup for sure. Feeling that way/anytime, Same way you love me. Those two are fire!!
They usually play this now towards the end of their concerts and includes an 5+ minute epic instrumental with dueling guitar and piano solos. Love it!
Wish you kids could have grown up with 80’s music
Yes!! This song is so great. Steve Perry’s vocals! ❤❤❤
Yesss!! Original Journey is EPIC, I've been to various concerts of both singers. Love Journey!! Thank you for reacting to them!! 👋
When I was a teenager my best friend and I would ride our bikes singing this song! Often, we would take turns riding with one of us on the handlebars, while other one pedaled!! Shout out to my best friend ever, Peggy Ipp..... & deceased bro David Ipp! Love you always and forever! If I recall correctly, we counted the nananana's even! 144 if my memory is correct!🌞🕯️👋💜✨🕯️ TMI, yet, I lost something valuable to the WHEEL IN THE Sky Album!! 🌌✨🌛
Their live performances on Midnight Special are epic.
He was always called THE VOICE ! He's handsome PORTUGUESE.
Yes! Turn the lights down low on this one, for sure. 😄
I remember being on the bus for school band trips and at least one of the several cassette/CD players would be playing this. One time, a chaperone came down the aisle of the bus and asked us what did we know about this song. She looked like she didn't want us to listen to it, while a male chaperone yelled from the front of the bus "Turn that up!" 😆
Check out...
"Send Her My Love"
"Girl Can't Help It"
Steve Perry was the ultimate package back in the 70s and 80s. He has an atmospheric voice and was sexy a front man for Journey! Great song!
Next up, listen to Journey's "Lights!"
Jay n Amber plleeeeease keepem in The 1970s BABY
"Mother Father" is a must for any Journey fan! In an interview Steve stated vocally it was the hardest song he ever did. It is imperative that your watch their performance from the Houston concert live! Steve takes his talent to another level and so does the band!!!
My favorite Journey song!!!😍😍😍😍 Steve Perry trained as a tenor for opera!!!!
The absolute top tier of rock star vocalists, performers who use their vocal instrument at the pinnacle of perfection, contains only two artists; Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry. They set the standard.
1965....Mel Carter...."Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill Me". Soaring vocals with no boring repetitive na-na-nas like in that Journey song or "Hey Jude"....just pure talent.
Nothing will ever top his voice with Journey. I highly recommend you listen to their song LIGHTS. A goosebumps song.
Any song that allows Steve Perry to hit those high notes is an epic song!
Saw them in concert back in the day...nothing like Journey
I love that the na-na-nanana-na was basically him teasing and gloating because the other guy did to her what she did to him.
You should check them out live at Houston, 1981 during the ESCAPE tour. They were at the top of their game. MOTHER FATHER, WHO'S CRYING NOW, STONE IN LOVE are 3 great performances from that concert. Also, SEND HER MY LOVE from the FRONTIERS album is a must.
Yep, growing up in the seventies, all the girls wanted to be with Steve Perry...and all the guys wanted to BE him! Live performances are awesome with the energy and the entire band gives a great performance every time! We have a local band called Hybrid Ice who partner occasionally with someone from Journey. They do a terrific job, and I love their original work. But Steve Perry, always phenomenal!
Record producers talk about the importance of "air in the mix". Rock records can get muddy with all the lower-register elements (kick drum, bass, crunchy fuzztone rhythm guitar). You need cymbals, tambourine, upper octave keyboards, screaming lead guitar and, yes, if the singer can soar above everything with a strong, clear tenor, hey! We smell a hit!
This was first Journey song I heard. I was like 7yrs old at the time. Military brat and my family finally get back to the States. I bought a compilation album (each track was from a different act) and this song was on it. So was a duet was Stevie Nicks called "Gold" for the life of me I forget the guy's name in the duet.
John Stewart sang Gold with Stevie Nicks.
Amber & Jordan, U guys have to react to Who's Crying Now (Escape Tour 1981: Live In Houston) (Journey's Best Hit Of all time). U guys will not be disappointed. Do it Live!!!
His voice still gives me goosebumps. One of my favorite songs from them.
LOVE Journey! High up in my faves of all time! As well as this song and”who’s Cryin’ now.” This 1981 Houston concert is phenomenal- the best! My opinion.✋🏼
Much love always-❤️🔥💙✨
Good song that shows off Stevens vocals. Gregg Rolie on Keys is so good Steve Smith’s first album on drums and he shines. I’m personally an Aynsley Dunbar fan and dig his style but Steve Smith is a top flight drummer with great foot work and a jazz flair So good.
One of my favorite songs by Journey is "Stay A While". (And I love everything Journey, even named my daughter after them). There's just something so soulful about the way Steve asks this girl who he is so in love with to "Just stay with me a while".
They had a couple memorable midnight special performances. “Feeling That Way” was also awesome.
My favorite Journey track. I'd sing this to my son when he was a baby, to put him to sleep!
LOVE this one. It's one of those rock & roll songs you can dirty dance to. Always wakes up the party. Do Open Arms. You'll both dig that one. Very raw and emotional. Stellar vocal performance.
No no one sounds like Steve Perry ! He's has his own sound same with the band .Brilliant
To get this same vibe, you may need to stay in the same era with Journey, pre-Jon Cain/keyboardist. This one is with Gregg Rolie, one of the original founders of Journey, who was also in Santana and sang lead vocals on Black Magic Woman. Anyway, they have a few songs they sing together as Steve was being assimilated into the band. Certainly worth the listen, "Feeling that Way/Anytime", "Just the Same Way".
Mother, Father is one of my fav Journey songs! Live in Houston 1981.
