HOLY STACHE BATMAN!
"Should you train every day?" - My mind and spirit say yes. My body and all it's injuries say no.
My mind is like yes. My broken finger - also yes. My pulled rotator cuff- nah bruh we need some time off. but this is a democracy so we are taking our ass to class.
I can't imagine taking up jiu jitsu, pre-youtube era. You basically only learned when you went to class.
I'm sure they had resources like internet and books you could learn that way too 🤷♂️
I used to have a joe moiera vhs. And there was half a page in a monly martial arts magazine. There was also only 2 black belts in the uk when I trained.
The BJJ boomers did things the hard way. When you see a black belt with stripes who isnt Brazilian. Think about their journey
And when you met w friends ect. But yea. How about learning anything pre internet. The library...
I first started BJJ back in 2004, and it wasn't bad. RUclips definitely helps though.
@@dieselx999 nope... we just went to class and rolled.
46 years old and started BJJ this July. Trained 1 or 2 days per week till now. After seeing this, I will up it with at least 2 days extra and find ways to improve on the days I am not training. Having a demanding job and being a father, and a husband, my time is rather limited. Still, your talk motivates me to time manage better. Thanks man!
As a fellow Fireman and a Royce Gracie 4 Stripe Brownbelt , the honeymoon period is over for me , I found this very encouraging thank you, I will continue to advance forward
Did you get your black?
Lets just take a moment to admire this mans stance. Tight elbows, active hands, ready for anything at all times. he's ready to arm drag your ass at any moment.
Great video, Stephan, great advice. Keep up the great work. Thanks.
Keeping it real. Thank you brother.
Thank Stephen! This was the question in my mind.
Badass trip Coach!! Please post a full vid on your trip if you haven’t
This is a very good video and is nice to see you enjoy the outdoors.
Much respect!!
I dig the new look keep it
Awesome video!
That video is applicable to every aspect of life
Great advice, IMO let your body speak to you, work some gym training in, get with other senior members do some drills on the side, drop into a judo school, work on your throws and foot sweeps, mountain biking for cardio, let injuries recuperate, family comes first too don't forget.
Amazing journey. Congratulations!
I absolutely love your outlook Stephan and philosophies. Keep on keeping on brother. 😃
First: The mustache is awesome! -- Now to the rest. I agree that everyday should be geared toward the goal. However, I am also in agreement that training in BJJ does not always mean being on the mat or doing something physical. I train three times a week (Purple belt) on the mats. To make up for my time in between training, I exercise every day (bike riding, walking, tennis, etc.). I rarely get tired when rolling, even when I train in the competition classes as a result. -- Also, I review techniques and more importantly, I try to learn concepts by watching video and by mentally rehearsing each day. I find this helps me to keep up with the guys that train every day. I keep waiting for the guys to fly by me that train all the time, but I find that my system keeps me prepared. If you pair this with the idea of just keep showing up, I am always able to see progress because the attrition rate in bjj is so high.
@@terenceharris5610 I agree Terrence. I think 3, maybe 4 days, is the sweet spot for many. I've seen many guys burn out because they trained so much (injury/etc.). Also, my philosophy is to just keep coming.
@@mouthguardcomic This is exactly my thinking. I'm still a beginner and I train twice a week (will try to up this to three times), but for the rest I do just like you.
Out of curiosity do you still feel like you've improved? Maybe you're a black belt by now :)
@@jsv8898 Yes, I still feel like I've improved and my statement holds true for my experience. I'm a brown belt now and many of the guys that were training at the time of my comment (3 yrs+) do not train now and many of those who were training every day or almost every day do not do so now. In fact, none of them do. You can blame it on burn out or life for any number of reasons. However, many of those who had more reasonable schedules seem to be training still.
I still review grappling concepts and videos everyday and it keeps me sharp and expands my knowledge. In fact, I learn more due to that. There is no way to maintain my knowledge by just going to class. I also use grappling dummies (TeJay brand and also a Grappling Smarty) that are very realistic and help me think through things when not in class.
"The damn boat ain't gonna paddle itself"
Awesome mustache dude!
Yo Stephen Kesting just read my mind with this video 💯👍
enlightening
Got the same rash guard.. still my favourite
9:00 good question. How tf do you get sponsorships so that you can go work on your butterfly guard? 🦋
I'll give you a couple of quid if you wanna take the bus to a gym two towns over .
WHOSE GONNA CARRY THE BOATS
Really feeling that horseshoe moustache Stephan!
Do you have a set curriculum for BJJ?
I m Just starting this type of sport now (18) Is It good 4 days at week,2 days bbj and 2 days MMA?
Epic stash. Gets Chuck Norris seal of approval
Hey man do you have a school in Toronto?
I was so gutted when my dog needed an ACL replaced....
Huge procedure, needed 2 days off BJJ, devastating.
According to your analogy of 1 unit = 0.25 units after one week, I believe the equivalent example should have been 4 steps forward 3 steps back. You can tell what kind of husband I am
Is it me... or is that stache getting.... BIGGER. Stop feeding it.
Nice Stach Man 👊
Stephen's looking like the neighbor from Office Space
Your dog needs an ACL replaced?!? Who are you Palhares??😂😂
Most likely no, in my experience. 4 days with a home drill day and some film during the week is the sweet spot for me.
That elbow 😭
Check out the biker stache!
The MANSTACHE!!!!
Damn he reminds me of Paul Teutul with that beard.
I'm 33 years old, can I start a BJJ classe and have my black belt in it ?
Think of your journey, not the destination, Grasshopper. The answer is yes, but maybe you should worry about just making it to blue belt, which it seems only a small fraction of white belts ever achieve.
Short answer: yes. Long answer: depends on your level of determination/dedication. A classmate of mine got his BB this past December...he started around 47 and is 62 now.
The question is: should you practice everyday in order to audition for a Village People tribute band?
Wuajajajaja
The answer is no. Its well determined that if you want to advance at something the brain and nervous system needs periodic breaks and rest. Learn any instrument to observe this phenomenon.
With that new moustache, you look scary enough to never have to worry about using jiu jitsu for self defense. lol
Garry Tonon vibes
Yeah exactly why I can't train today, my dog needs an ACL surgery
The ‘stache ....
Jeezus!
But didn't Stephen get rhabdo a few years back cuz he wouldn't take a day off ?
Do You know of a Good BJJ gym In Montreal??? BASICS...
every day is a bit much. four times a week is perfect imo.
I wanted to train everyday, but sometimes theres no partner to train. Im thinking about buying a dummy, maybe it will be the only way. :(
Have all of you who have passed judgment on Keating's facial hair canoed 1,000 miles, or nah?
Train 5 or 6 days a week but dont roll every day
My girlfriend trains BBBJ everyday.
And her boyfriend?
Two months too early.
Cringy beard :-/
Only sissys cringes
