I like the belt system but as he points out it is arbitrary and each coach is different. A blue at all schools will not be equivalent. I read some folks talking about belts and I'll drop my .02¢ as a random guy on the internet. Focus on learning the art whatever it may be.. train, listen, pay attention, ask for help, and ask questions. The belts will come when you've done the work and learned the lessons not a moment sooner.

dude, its so important that you roll with your professors/coaches/instructors. Rolling with them is basically them allowing you to show what you got, offense, defense, neutral, 50/50's, etc. Mine specially will tell me what's good whats a dead-end, micro-adjustments when we roll, and its such a confidence boost to get a direct feedback.

I trained 5 - 6 days a week when i first started. the thing was i was huge on bike riding, would ride about 16 miles a day for about 3 years before i started BJJ. it was a huge help with learning fasted since i didnt have to worry about conditioning at all (kinda)
but a black belt told me to chill TF out and come around 3 times a week. and it was the best advice for me....work hard guys, just dont kill yourself trying to move up. BJJ is a full of advancements through out a lifetime.

Specifically today, I got the chance to roll with my instructor. While rolling, I could tell he's feeling me out and letting me go places, seeing if I'm watching frames and balancing. He said while rolling that he liked the control at levels across the body, called out my transitions from positions to submissions, and the consistency of my effort throughout the roll. We rolled for about 15-20 minutes non-stop and the entire time I felt like I was being quizzed, and I WAS! Bottom line, roll with your instructors, talk to them, ask questions after you roll about positions, and show consistency.

    @Skye-ij7jq 2 года назад +16

    Summary 8:15
    1. Do the work
    - critical mass of training - drilling, working on the moves, live rolling
    - commit to consistent training
    - start with a couple of days of training a week and build up
    - don't go too hard in the beginning or you will burn out and loose motivation
    2. Ask coach for feedback
    - learn at your own pace
    - some moves are easy for you, some are not - get clarity from coaches
    - coaches priorities different things (curriculum, competition, etc) - be on the same page with the coach
    3. Focus your training
    - take coach's feedback and work on it
    - it might feel like you are regressing (it might be in the short run), however, in the long run you will be a better well-rounded grappler

Started with 2 days a week. Then upped it to 6 days a week. With 2x a days. Now I’m at 4 days a week with two 2x a days a week, so 6 sessions a week. With a medium level of weight lifting. Have noticed a massive improvement. Body learns the movements better and my body/mind is never worn out.

I went 7 years without training (marriage, kids , work etc…) I now picked it back up with my same teacher a month ago. I’m humbled that he told me I’m right around the corner. I did BJJ for Eleven years (started at age 5), and always kept the same schedule. One hour a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. I started in the kids system and then joined the adult system at age 13. I always had extra water in my bag with some protein bars, and always worked on my conditioning. I always watched videos on the moves I need to work on, and I also would ask my Professor for a little bit of help. After 11 years of training, I finally got my Blue Belt today from my Professor, and damn does it feel good. When you train for years, and you get your first Adult Belt, it hits you hard. It hit me pretty hard because I had a goal since I was 13, and my goal was to get the Blue Belt before I turn 17, and I achieved that goal, but I didn't think about how hard it would hit me. Well, Now that I have my Blue Belt, now it's time to go for purple before I turn (someone give an age, please).

Been training for nine years, and I'm still just a purple belt. Doesn't mean I'm bad by any means, I'm actually one of the more difficult purple belts in my city, but I think that my instructors simply wanna see more from me and so I'm patient about it. I've met so many purple belts that get theirs in like three or four years and to me, they're not purple belts. If they can't move me... Then something's wrong. I believe that the only way to get belts faster is if you compete and win constantly in higher belt divisions. Like if u a white belt wrecking purple belts, then you'll be a purple belt within less than two years most likely and that is absolutely more than fair. Results on the mats that are displayed are worth more than the belt itself.

How often do ppl take classes on a regular basis? Is 2 normal or more likely 3?
I did 8 years of shotokan karate and I am looking for something new. I just hope it wont be as hard as I expect it to be in the beginning since I am experienced in an martial art - even tho its style is far away from bjj.
