      @@kimberlykinch Besides videos of you breaking down what you're doing and why, I would love another video where you talk about rolling with larger grapplers, but this time specifically talking about techniques and things to do or avoid against them including any small details that you find make a difference. Also I would love a video about you talking about how you structure your training (drilling vs rolling vs technique focus) and mobility and strength training including time, frequency and general rep scheme. It's a common problem for us bjj obsessed to abandon everything to train more bjj, but we need to have balance for longevity and (at least for me) it's hard to balance aesthetic goals and other interests with bjj goals.

    Thanks girl!!! Your videos are never long enough lol. I’m four months into my journey and I feel like I don’t know what to do when I’m rolling. I love drilling because I know what I’m supposed to be doing

      I feel the exact same way!! I’m only a month in, but I am still confused in rolling. It’s been extra hard at my gym because a lot of the ppl are getting ready to compete in NAGA soon. I try to be the best partner that I can so they get really good practice time but I dont feel like it is helping me nail my technique. However, I have noticed recently that I am getting better at escaping from under ppl during a roll. During a roll I’m just trying to survive

      It'll come! The more drilling you do and the more you try to implement those moves into your roll, eventually it will click, promise!

    Oh my goodness…. That first question….sadly that is happening in some schools that some do not know about. It happened to a few people I know in a school I went to, including myself. It was lower belts disrespecting, but upper belt not handling the situation in a rightful manner. One was a white belt who won some competitions and seemed to let that go to her head. In class, the professor added and pointed out, for some reason, that she does triathlons and marathons and jiujitsu….She was a beginner white belt, so I didn’t quite understand why he was making her seem superior to others in class after winning her competitions. It was a bit much from what I had been around from other schools. Usually, it was a congratulations at the most at other schools. On top of that, I heard from other students, she only used force/aggression and did not use controlled techniques to win, and that many did not like rolling with her in class as a partner bc she wouldn’t listen or remember what to do. I rolled with her once, and definitely had to agree. I had to tell her many times what to do next that it was a bit aggravating bc I wasn’t able to improve my game with her having to tell her many times bc her focus wasn’t on the sport. She would disrespect the mat, and not even bow with respect at end of class. Another day, she would not shake hands at end of class. I found out the professor of that school sided with military and ignored other individuals complaints who were not military, yet I am a military spouse. That girl was higher up in rank in the military.
    Anyways, there were underlining issues in that school that I did not fully know about until later. Another was a blue belt who boasted about rolling with women who he groped inappropriately. My husband would not allow me to roll with him when we found out, but I sure wanted to, to put him in his place. I didn’t, though, of course, but he finally got kicked out when others spoke up about him. We really should have not stayed in that school as long as we did. It’s sad of the ridiculous things that occur in some schools….but I guess it being a close contact sport, some individuals have other intentions or need attention instead of focusing on the sport. I believe all of that got sorted out eventually from others that spoke up about that school. I left, though, and am so happy with my school now, but unfortunately, my spouse and I will be moving soon for his work. However, we claim our school right now as our home school. From that experience, my advice is to be aware of your surroundings, and get a feel of what the school is about and how they treat everyone if fairly or not. Give other schools in the area a shot, and see which one fits you more. If there seems to be drama with most the students and the professor does nothing, then steer clear from that school. The focus won’t be on jiujitsu, which will not improve your skills. Make sure the school has a good foundation and will not tolerate that in class.
    P.S. My spouse and I train. Sometimes he is my coach for the day, if our professor cannot make it to class, and he will use me as his partner to show others the technique of that day to train. I believe the difficult part in our situation is that my spouse finds it difficult to be patient with me when we roll, as with others, being that we have known each other for 14 years. My spouse wants to push me more and have me at his level, in which I know he means well, it just doesn’t come out in that handled way, and so I will get annoyed by him being too pushy on me and not as understanding. :)

    Great video, as always! Thank you for sharing so much information for us newbies and soon-to-be newbies😁 Looking forward to your strength training video. I’m a former “cardio bunny” who’s recently fallen in love with strength training 💪🏾 My biggest concern is keeping up with my gym routine while making sure I get enough practice time on the mat.

      Thank you!!
      I know, that my struggle too. I tend to leave strength training to the side to do more jiu jitsu lol. It's a constant battle for sure, welp.

    The Arnicare gel does work pretty well. Used it to get rid of a terrible black eye and it helped turn it from purple to yellow pretty quick.

    I always get so bruised!! Lmao I just kinda deal with it. But at the end of the year I have a wedding to go to and my legs are going to be showing, so I’m thinking I might try fake tanning just to disguise it for that event

    Do you think Jiu Jitsu is good for self defense? Would love your thoughts on that

    • @mariehopes9474
      @mariehopes9474 3 года назад +1

      Yes, for sure. If you are just starting out, you may want to check out the Gracie Academy program that teaches more direct self-defense moves. It will depend in what direction you want your journey to go. I started out wanting to have self-defense, but found myself enjoying the sport of the techniques and wanting to learn more moves than self-defense.

      It depends. BJJ is good and very effective tool for self defense but only against some kinds of assault.
      From my point of view the only bjj is not enough. You need also of some basics of striking to defend yourself effectively. Many moves or positions of bjj (pulling guard for example or being on the bottom) are useless and dangerous in a real fight.
      Moreover take in mind today pure bjj is more and more a sport and less and less a martial art. Most academies focus much more on competitions and sport scores than the self defense aspect.
      If you are interested only on self defense I'd focus more on MMA gym that give you a good base of standing a ground fighting.
