16:15 funny that you mentioned it. That's exactly what happened back in 2018 while they were trying to figure out what to do with the performance without Yui (it was announced that she wouldn't partake in the tour, later she officially left). I guess they did that because 1) Yui absence from the tour wasn't planned 2) It was assumed that her health would improve and she'd be back at her position in the triangle formation. She never came back, so the avengers thing had to be created. It's funny that they're named that way because, in a sense, they came to the rescue for the group. BABYMETAL had some kind of rebirth with the new album, new costumes and overall new image. It was so odd seeing Su and Moa constantly switch positions back and forth. It never looked natural because, as you mentioned, Mikiko didn't create the choreography thinking about a duo. Obviously BLACK BABYMETAL it's an exception, and it works because they mirror each other's moves in every song. Also, there's no imbalance between the main and sub vocalist. Looking back at those times, I remember Moa saying something like she was terrified any time she had to stand at the front by herself. Having nobody to rely on really made her realize how important the triangle formation was. I can only imagine how she felt after all those years having someone right next to her, and then experience sudden loneliness. IIRC that realization made her respect Su-metal even more because Su always tried to be strong for the sake of the group.
Nice one. This was a Japan exclusive song on the second album, the international release had 'From Dusk Till Dawn' instead - and equally good but very different song. They have still played 'Syncopation' live outside of Japan only one time. That was at the Brixton Academy in 2019. We couldn't believe our ears when the heartbeats started sounding, the whole crowd went wild. Su has said she was amazed that everybody there seemed to know the song already since it had never been released outside of Japan. There are a couple of lucky people who say they were there and keep on telling the story in the comments on reactions - I'm not sure who they were but MartinMetal and myself are investigating since both of us were there, so it is possible we may have even seen them.🤔🧐 On Su being half a second or whatever behind, they often do that where she is slightly behind or slightly ahead in the choreo or doing something slightly different to the other two - I have absolutely no doubts that is always deliberate and was choreographed as it happens in every performance of whatever song it happens in.
I am always impressed with your commentary. As I have requested before, I would love to see Su and Moa's emotional performance in the SHINE LegendM version to you.
Syncopation is a very popular song with the fans, despite the fact that it only appears on the Japanese version of Metal Resistance, and they only play it live in Japan (apart from Brixton Academy, London, 2019). For some odd reason Koba thought that it was 'too Japanese' for the western audiences, so the international version had From Dusk Til Dawn instead, which is odd because FDTD is a much more unconventional song than Syncopation.
I've always loved the build up in this song... the heart beat, and guitar/synth in the beginning... slowly building up that excitement... and then unleashes it with that awesome guitars and drums..... 🤘🦊🤘
Nice one, thanks! "Syncopation" is objectively one of their best songs. And yes, the duo formation didn't work in 2018 so they went back to the triangle formation on their last tour of 2018 in Singapore and Australia with Saya Hirai as the third member. And about Kano, the avenger on this video, not bad for being 14 years old back then and being this one her very first show with BABYMETAL.
It's one of my top BabyMetal songs, and i love the courography. Was lucky enough to see this song performed live at Brixton Academy. The only time performed outside Japan . Grington 300 300 was there as well, not far behind me as we found out when he saw my fancam footage on my channel but never met. We also never saw the two enfusiastic fans who keep bragging about it on RUclips, pointed out by FlugelHorn Old Man in his comments Even though we keep looking out for them 😮😁🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼
Although "Syncopation" made its debut in 2016, this specific performance was from 2019, featuring former Sakura Gakuin member Fujihira Kano as the Avenger (I recall she was actually only 14 at the time; talk about how impressive she was to keep up with the powered up Moa!)
_Suki kirai suki kirai suki_ _Suki kirai suki kirai_ Another banger track, and with the already mature side on Metal Resistance 2nd album. Our queen and princesses are undecided if they are really in love, like a syncopated heart, Syncopation was the song exclusively for Japanese album while "From Dusk Till Dawn" was released for International version of Metal Resistance (of course that's my next recommendation if you didn't already, live at Budokan 2021 is the only proshot version), although later on they performed this song outside of Japan because is a blast with more rock sound rather than metal. Along with Karate, is one of those songs many fans got that anime vibes, for me Karate would be the opening and Syncopation the ending, although it works like an opening too. Till this day those were the only BM songs with that anime vibes for me, but after the new single DA - Shingeki comes out now i got three songs lol In this live version Kano Fujihira is the avenger filling the third spot as a backup dancer, you can see the original trio live at Tokyo Dome 2016. Thanks for another great analysis and see you next time 🦊🤘🔥

I dont know if i'm correct, but if Suzuka seems out of rhythm, it's because she makes syncopated steps Some time ago my dance teacher mentioned it to me, i think it was in the music genre of salsa where it was performed If i'm wrong, i Apologize in advance Thanks for your analysis as always 🙏🏻
There are other songs where her choreo is the same as what the other two have done, but intentionally delayed, offset. For example it's very noticeable at the halfway point (2m02s) of Gimme Chocolate. There are other examples where what the trio does is to create a sequence between them, not unison.
Great analysis and always learn a lot. I like the practicality of how choreographers include certain moves that allow dancers to deal with any stiches they get during their dance routine too. PS. The start of Syncopation is so intense too.
You'll probably be surprised to know syncopation was probably most famously produced by J.S. Bach in the 1600's. He incorporated it into many of his compositions.
It's interesting to see the nostalgic in it. I feel the Japanese pop/rock scenes embraced a lot of the nostalgic things. Maybe partly because of the generation the producers are from. Maybe it is also a culture that still loves the old styles. Of course there are new things around, and the influence of K-pop is also real. But the main stream Japanese idol/pop scenes are often quite very nostalgic. Like how the old forms of musicals are still thrived. How the old forms of sumo wrestling or wrestling are still thrived. The older style of idols and pop are also still thrived. Even baseball. Baseball had been seen as the old type of popular sport to attend to. But it also come back to attracts new young fans nowadays. It feels like if you find a way to let the younger generation interested in a thing you can still keep it going after generations. And that is why attending baseball games is a trend for young girls now. That is why visiting shrines is a trend for young girls now... etc
They wear in-ear monitors Do you think they could be dancing to a click track so no matter what the instrumental is doing, they have an in-ear beat they dance to
They extremely likely have a click track. You can see this in Road To Resistance where su-metal needed to force the audience, who were singing without the band, back in sync so that the band could start playing again. Also since the band does not include keyboard I am guessing they use a backing track for those sounds that the band needs to stay in sync with.
Yeah so this was 2019, so the other dancer was not Yui. If I'm not mistaken it was Kano! At that time she was 15 at that time! If you do not see any red at all in their dresses, it's likely that it's after Yui left :)

I enjoyed that, thank you. I just wanted to point out something, while I agree with you that typically Su doesn't quite sync up with Moa and whoever her partner is, she's normally a little off, I still give mad props to Su for how FAR she's come in her dancing skills. When Su first started dancing in SG, you could pick her out so EASILY because she always had this awkward, almost clumsy "style" when she danced. She looked like she was not comfortable with her body and the way it moved. It was pretty cute at the time, but if you see how she's improved, she looks like a woman who is confident in who she is and is confident in what her body can do and how it moves. She's TOTALLY transformed. So for that I'm very proud of her and how she's improved, so for me, it's easy to overlook. Besides, when I watch Babymetal, I watch Moa and her partner for the dancing and listen to the vocals from Su. Each has their specialty that they excel in. I know you're not really criticizing Su, you were just making an observation, but I just wanted to point out that even though she may be a tad off-sync, she's still improved so much that it deserves mentioning.

Yui leaving and the more pop emphasis of the 3rd album made it hard for me to connect with this chapter of BM. The Avenger concept was necessary to keep the "triangle", as Su was always going to be the lead, but not having the Avengers sing meant that Moa's contribution was relegated to almost just a backing dancer.
