@Ed Yeah I can understand why you would feel that way. I hear that the TD-50X upgrade makes use of the new sensor array though so I’m looking to seeing how things are once I update!
Great video! Love the explanation on the difference in the feel and how it is much closer to the acoustic hats now. The blooper reel? I feel your pain!
I too struggled with the software upgrade thing. I did it. Lost all my user kits but the sound upgrade was worth it. Still waiting on my 14Ds but the 50X software is totally worth the sacrifice. No regrets.
Great to know man. After hearing such great things I have a feeling that within the next couple of weeks (at the latest) I’ll be making the upgrade too. I’m actually really looking forward to hearing the new sounds!
Hey man! What do you mean by "lighter"? And you are absolutely correct - it was pointed out to me today that the VH12s & VH14s are indeed 12 inches in diameter, which is probably why these new 14Ds felt so much larger!
I was most impressed by the ride of the 3 digital pads I tried on the td50x. Great variation in sound across surface and good dynamics. Good feel compared to real cymbal. Also was surprised how good my Td10 still sounds in comparison!😄
Hey man I’m just about to do this from the td50 So I need a special type of SD card Be keen to know And do I need to upgrade to the td 50 x to get the best outa them Or do they just need the basic upgrade to keep the td50 ? And all my cool kits Does that cost money 💰 As the big upgrade is about $300 Australian Sorry for all the questions Thanks 🙏 Nice share on the hats 🎩
hey thx for the vid, I was wondering what the function button on the bottom was for... I'm actually not using a Roland module, so maybe it doesn't make any difference, I'm just plugging strait in to my laptop and using Ableton live. so far it still works great, but I find or wish rather that I wouldn't have to hold my foot down so heavily to trigger the closed sensors, make sense? that's why I was wondering about the white button on the bottom and if that would do anything. thx man
Thanks for the review. I'm waiting on someone with a TD27 module to try it out with it. The TD27 doesn't get the new sounds used by the new digital hat, but it does support it "bare bones". I'm wondering if It's a huge upgrade from the vh10/vh11.
My pleasure! Without updating to the TD50X firmware for the new sample library, I can’t say I’d recommend that TD50/TD27 users upgrade to the VH14Ds if their current hats are working correctly. Whilst they are really nice to play, they’re not a cheap investment and except for the obvious size difference, they’re not too dissimilar from their predecessors (in my opinion). I hope that helps!
its like a 14" vh13 with slightly better triggering. Open/close is not perfect by a long shot. Infrared should have been implemented, like the atv hh. A shame, really, certainly for the price:)
I bought the vad 506 kit last year to put in my studuo for when drummers comes over. Great but only complaint from drummers is that the high hat trigger switch underneath the hihat doesnt respond as quickly as u press the pedal. I watched this video to see of the new hihat was better. But i noticed in the video mitch said as he was unboxing that the foot pedal trigger was never a problem before. So i was wondering if theres something iv done wrong installing my hihat. Because its very noticable. As u raise the pedal up and down theres a delay in the responce. If your hitting the hihat fast u hear one hit too many before the trigger takes effect. I troubleshooted the trigger using the roland manual instructions but had little effect. Anyone else got the previous hihat with the 506 or 306 kit and had similar or better results ?
Hey Mike, awesome that you have a VAD kit! I haven't actually had the chance to try one out as yet with everything going on in the world but I've heard great things. I know you mentioned that you've played around with the settings in the drum module, but I would dare say that perhaps your hats need to be further calibrated. Once I set the calibration for mine (both my VH12s/VH13s and my VH14Ds) they work basically flawlessly. I have a feeling that the setting you're looking for on the Hi-Hat screen is "Offset".
I have the 506 kit as well, same issue. I'm pretty much convinced the TD27 doesn't have the processing power to handle any hi-hats using the processing engine it has. You'll notice the TD27 doesn't get the new sounds for the VH-14D, and I think that's because Roland knows it just can't handle it. It's a shame, because the kit is great otherwise, I love it. Thankfully I'm just a hack that plays open hats most of the time, so I'm not greatly impacted. I feel you though, it does suck.
So good. I like this video very much because it's very interesting. Thank you. You are very confident. Very interesting experience. Always beautiful and beautiful. I like toooooo;;;;@@“””’
@@mitchbruzzese yep, the drum does have a strong endurance. I have it for 4 years and still using it. But somehow I got bored maybe because the set is full of rubber
Have you tried out the new VH-14Ds too? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

The bloopers are great! 🤣 I know nothing about drums but i could listen to you talk about them all day. You make it so interesting.
Worth the wait! Super cool! Well did. Gotta say, the bloopers had me in stitches. Also, JJ Abrams would be proud of those lens flares.
I thought the same about the lens flares!

Hey Mitch, thanks for the review. Do you find the new hh lighter than the vh12 or 13? By the way these are 12 inches ;)

I love the video effects and music during the b-roll of the box. Sounds like problems mate.
Does it have a bell zone in the center
Not exactly, but the top plate does respond pretty closely to an acoustic set of hats.
