    I was thinking about my next step on from the TD30 and very nearly purchased the TD 50 digital upgrade pack..... I'm so glad I didn't! My journey has been td20kv, td30kvx, and will almost certainly be a VAD706 next... Sure I agree it's an extortionate amount of money, but it's been so long since I played an acoustic kit that I'm committed to the digital route until I retire from drumming. I think it's time to sell my trusty pearl masters and zildjians.
    Thanks as always for your reviews I really trust your comments. A real genuine drummers, drummer.... But in the digital world!

    Very happy you hear you will be developing your kits for the new TD-50X update because they will not transfer over. That is excellent customer service. I’m very excited for the digital hihats. Can’t wait to try them out. Definitely going to be getting td-27 soon now and eventually get all of the digital products. So many people complaining about the price of the top of the line 706 VAD kits. They expect Roland to price its newest technology like it’s an Alesis strike SE. I love the natural finish of the 706. Looks similar to the drum-tec kit. It’s nice TD-50 owners can get new sounds and features to refresh their module and breathe some new life into them.

  • @Rhythmic1
    @Rhythmic1 3 года назад +1

    A few e-drummers are complaining about the price and time it took to release these new products but the cost of R&D let alone ramping up for production had to have been a significant investment in money and time. I really don't think they were holding back on most of it. As evidenced by the extra usb port I think it was all preplanned when they designed the original TD-50. And also I think you're right about the flagship models being a boutique product for status and for drummers with major touring/recording acts. But I have to say making these new features upgradable and available to existing Roland customers with a big investment in their products is a really big deal for people like me. They aren't just throwing us a bone. These are significant updates. Best of all my TD-50 is not out of date yet. I was worried I'd have to try and sell it in a crowded market as all of us scrambled to keep up. Hopefully Roland continues to milk the TD-50 line for all it's worth and we get another few years out of it before a new flagship module is released. I would if I were them.
    Thanks for letting us know you were going to work on making your kits compatible with the new upgrades Luke. I would really hate to lose them.

As you know I have quite a bit of your kits and recommend them quite a bit so have to say Total class act on your part to commiting to help us get them back. Have to imagine this is a bit of monkey wrench as it looks like you were going to put out a new pack for the 50. I have the TD-50kv2 and it’s amazing!!! The digital Hi-Hat is as equally amazing!!! Originally tried the Alesis Strike Pro SE, it was horrible and the 20” acoustic kick doesn’t line up and work with Trick pedals unless you get a kick drum rise or rack to raise it. The 18” kick from Roland is set up to accompany all pedals and works beautifully although it is the loudest part of the kit. Overall I couldn’t be happier with the 50kv2. For those upgrading their existing TD-50....I was under the impression (via a you tube video from another user) that the SD card could be utilised for saving everything in the module before upgrading to X, so you don’t “lose” anything, you just lose the ability to access your old kits and sounds without doing an SD card upload...hmmm...love the idea of more sounds...I programmed a lot of tuned sounds in my TD-9, bells, timpani’s, entire kits of all sorts of pitched sounds, each kit tuned to a particular chord, successive kits related to the one before it, e.g. C. Am. F. Dm. G. Em. blah blah blah.

      Do you mean the new hi-hat? There's been an update for the TD-27 that adds VH-14D compatibility, but it won't be the same as the TD-50X. The 50X has new sounds which accommodate the positional sensing and extra open/close transitions (according to Roland). The TD-27 update doesn't contain new sounds, so you won't get that functionality. So, it will work, but it will work more like a slightly better VH-13, I think (though I haven't tested one myself).

It really wasn't any good out of the box. So far the new Roland sounds do not justify the upgrade and the loss of my precious kits. There's a new software update for the original TD-50 (v1.08) already available that adds support for the VH-14D, but the dinner m functionality of it will be basically the same as any other hi-hat pad (no positional sensing/new articulations, no extra resolution between open/closed, no new sounds), except the touch muting will still work as that's basically just MIDI aftertouch.

      Yeah, it will work but it can't utilise all of the features. The sounds in the TD-27 won't react to the positional sensing and apparently there are optimised open/close transitions for it on the 50X which aren't in the 27. Though I haven't used them myself to verify exactly what differences you can notice when playing.

      I suppose they could make a "27X" style upgrade that allows for improved sounds that support the digital hats better, but I guess it depends whether they think that's a viable option for their mid-tier module. Something tells me we won't see this HH for a while, the new thin cymbals took so long to become available but you never know. As a whole it's a nice jump from the TD20/30 but took so long to get to this point as Roland just adds one thing to a new kit until it's fully updated...not to cannibalize it's self of course. But it feels like the TD50 should have been this but looks like it took drum-tec and ATV and maybe Pearl to finally get Roland to move in the A2E direction and expand their sounds, wonder what the TD60 will be? Yeah it looks good but holy shit that's a lot of dough...but it's for those rich people who will play it twice a month lol Building your own is definitely a much cheaper option and just going with Roland cymbals/TD27 module. That's the route I took after my last Roland kit. But I HOPE the digital HH is actually better in HHC department for playing more of the open/closed stuff...Also hope the sounds are good this time.

      Hey man, Interesting point! What would you do with about 3k budget max!
      I am about to get the TD27 kit (upgrading from my good old TD12KV)!
      Should i go for something else? I never thought about the special ATV, Gewa, drumtec setups because firstly its expensive and secondly often too much of a hassle than just getting the regular td27.
      What would you recommend?

    • @Macho_Man_Randy_Savage
      @Macho_Man_Randy_Savage 3 года назад +1

      @@prod_adrian I'm not much of a budget guy as my kit is a 7pc no compromise, all latest Roland cymbals w/TD50 running SD3...to build a A2E is not hard but you do have to do a bunch of research and then carry out the work and miscalculations can be made and you might have to trouble shoot, mine all went smoothly... If you could stretch your budget to a VAD506, that will give you a TD27, the 2 new thinner cymbals and 2 Digital pads (with a 3rd open for a future VH14D) which are so great and will be a huge upgrade and the acoustic look and presence/size is amazing and will last you for years. And it will all be set up out of the box. Or you could drop to the VAD 503 and lose a tom and cymbal but will limit your kit. Or again you could go thru making your own shells (with a HW bundle and more shells on any color as long as the kit isn't too awkward for rigger installation), getting a TD27 Digital Pack, HH/Cymbals you want to complete the setup. ATV cymbals are okay but they don't cost any less and aren't as nice imho. Rdrums for triggers or just cones and make your own metal base/brackets with 1 or 3 cones per shell and drum-tec for heads. I did mine before the VAD line/TD27 so I was able to dump the money into cymbals and modules to experiment. Now with the VAD kits...it's a pretty good deal tbh and the one I'd recommend lol

    Can someone please clarify what it means when a cymbal is digital? Why is this different from the vh11?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 года назад

      The digital pads have extra circuitry and components inside them that allow additonal functions and do some "pre-processing" of the signal, sending out a MIDI signal. They use a USB cable (a digital connection) to interface with the module rather than a jack cable (an analog connection). The analog cymbals are effectively just sending a sound wave down the cable whereas the digital ones are sending more data.

      It doesn't work that way with good drum kits, except occasionally the snare stand. The bass pedal (or double bass) and hi-hat stand/pedal are very personal choices. You can't expect everyone to want iron cobras, for example. It would be like expecting a nice guitar to come with a strap and amp. That only happens on cheapo guitar "combos" for beginners. I personally would likely hate whatever pedals they included, I'd put 'em on ebay. Selecting the perfect bass pedal for you and your style is the hardest and most personal decision a drummer has to make. I spent hours and hours trying them out before landing on a limited edition direct drive setup. Roland is smart by not including them, that would be awful.
