The roland TD 30 has an ambience only button that I use a lot. I never noticed that the 50 didn't have it until now. Same with turning off the snare wire inside of the td30, although the number snares you could do that too was extremely limited. Those are welcome additions in the new update
Oh, I had no idea! I've never had the chance to use a TD-30 other than briefly on a shop floor, totally passed me by. I knew about the snare strainer though and it's always bugged me that the TD-50 didn't have it, knowing that the 30 did previously. Looks like there were more steps back than I initially thought with some TD-50 features. Thanks for the info!
The snare strainer control with the foot switch is huge for me. I had that on an earlier module, I think it was the TD20, and I never understood why they took that away on the TD50. So happy that's back with the TD-50X upgrade!
Got the upgrade today. Awesome stuff. I got mainly for the VH-14D support, and only found out later I could just update the TD-50 from 1.07 to 1.08 to get VH-14D support. But I am NOT disappointed. I think that the 50X is much better overall. Also the coaching sets at the click (metronome) are really cool.
Great video. I only got the TD-50 once the 50X came out. I bought the older TD-50 and the cloud upgrade when that became available, so I only know what is available with the newer module. Coming from the TD-17, I really do love this module but I'm sure it'll take me some time to get used to it. The TD-17 was pretty easy to use right out the box, my module before that was a TD-6. I can't wait for you to update the sound packs you offer. I use a side snare and I am looking forward to your snare pack being upgraded.
Thanks Max! Glad you like the 50X! Yeah, it will take some time to learn your way around it but it should be satisfying once you do! By my snare pack, do you mean my Snare eLements Pack? If so, that already works with the TD-50X as it's just samples, not kit files!
I want to do hybrid on my tama. I want that really good punchy sound on my kick bass. I can't get it out it of my octapad-30. I really don't use the whole kit from the pad. I mic my drums. I mainly use congas slap, low, high, and a few sound effects.
Great video! One new feature I noticed in the manual is the additional USB input channels and the corresponding settings marked as PAD DIRECT IN / LOOPBACK. In short out allows one to send audio directly "into" a pad, and then have use the module's audio processing as if that audio was locally generated (mixing, eq, overhead, room, etc., etc.) This seems to expand the module's use into a powerful mixer with 10 hardware outputs, great for VST users. Possibly also for layering sounds with the LOOPBACK feature. I'm sure you can fill a video or two on just this feature. 😀
Thanks! Yeah, I've seen that feature and was really intrigued when I saw it in the manual. I know that I'll really need to get stuck in and see how it works in practice before I talk about it. If it works as well as I hope, you're absolutely right - it will be at least a full video's worth!
Thank you for another 2021 video excellent content I guess all upgrades are limited to what is under the hood we moved over to triggering BFD to expand on the sample stock available the Machine Gun sound for example at 6.20 of the video still sounds synthetic at this point in the evolution of Roland. I was listening to modo drums new audio modelling that is breaking new ground with the brilliant idea of changing the character between the left and right sticks individually. Play an acoustic hi hat and you definitely notice the tone between your left and right stick hitting opposite sides of the hat giiving a different tone, instead of a ti ti ti you can hear ti ta ti ok it's subtle but to anyone playing jazz /funk etc you need to go deeper to hit that level of realism. On the downside we are finding that getting the BFD to work with the Roland VH 11 is difficult to say the least so what is the answer? what we all really want is to turn on and play without a shed load of headaches learning curves and manual reading Anyone out there that has an E kit that sounds great and triggers perfectly Please what's your setup
compared to the 50 its great out of the box, a lot more playable. I'm really excited to hear what Luke does with the originals premium and this module!!
I was going to wait to watch this video before installing the upgrade but since it actually seems to be reversible I wasn't so concerned. I find that out of the box it is way more warm and natural sounding. With some tweaking the presets can really shine compared to the original. You touched on the best points of the upgrade in the video. WAY MORE sounds to work with. Great introductory video!! I am a lunatic and have ordered the digital hat already. Does anyone know how the VH14D is working with VSTs ( specifically SD3 ) ? I'm desperate to learn if a hi hat bell articulation is achievable with the new hat. Hope all is well with your family, thoughts & prayers.
Great info as always Luke! I downloaded the TD-50X update a couple of weeks back, but have not applied yet as I've been working on an album using some Drum-Tec kits, which I'd lose if I upgraded. Should be able to do it this week. I also agree your last kits are your best - love the Yam RC kit in particular - look forward to hearing that on the TD-50X! :-)
Great video! Glad I found your channel. I saw in one of your videos that you sell sample packs which a user can import into the module. About 10 years ago I bought studio time and sampled my own drum kits. I was wondering what software you use to build your .TD0 kits. Rather than importing my samples one by one and layering inside the module I’d like to build the kits using a better interface and then just drag and drop like I did with the sample packs I bought from your site.
Thank you! I don't use software to build the kits, I create them entirely in the module. For the 50X, importing samples is less of a pain because of the folder import option, but either way I just do that as necessary. Assigning everything manually as I tweak is all part of the process for balancing things correctly.
Thanks for the explanation. I have a Roland TD-30 kv. Do you think the upgrade is worth it, I have no digital pads yet, but I would go for that in the future eventually, just don't know if I should spend that much money or go for a more affordable module like the TD-27. I really would like your opinion. Best regards.
Bro, Your videos are great . Thank you . Question - I have a TD50X connected to Logic via USB and headphone out jack from my module and I use SD3 sometimes .Thats my setup for recording. I always have issues with my headphone volume , volume is very high than drums sound from module or SD3. If I reduce the volume from phones knob at module, The overall volume is reduced. The same case when I reduce the volume in my mac. Do I need to change anything in the output setup for routing
Mate, great video! I think it sounds miles better. Won't belong and the new generation of usb kits will emerge. Lets see who's gets there first🤔, give it a few years! Can't wait to hear your take on the kits when you get round to fiddling with the 50x. :)
Yes, unfortunately. The 50X uses completely different sounds and some new settings so any kits built on the original 50 won't work. Are your kits ones that you built or ones that you purchased?
what is better module. TD50 original vs TD50x ? I upgraded from TD50 to TD50X. I'm wondering if I should roll back again. Is the TD50X definitely better?
Personally, I think the 50X. It has more features, more sounds and therefore more flexibility. I prefer the 50X sounds too and it's easier to get cleaner results out of them on their own or layered, though there is one snare on the original 50 that I liked because of its wild overtones. But overall, I think it's much better now.
Great video and even watching this I really don't believe this is worth the money! I own a TD-30 module and run Superior Drummer 3.0 and this still crushes this, IMO of course.
i think drummers get a good look into the world of mixing drums here, its all about the rooms vibes, esp when making music or recording a song, unless of course your under a tree thats waiting to be turned into a guitar, e drums are eco
Hi Just upgraded TD50 software to the TD50X. Much improved sounds but can anyone tell me where the Mic's distancing is for the cymbals/hihats please. The shells are on Tab Basic 1, but not to be seen anywhere on the cymbals or hihat? Any help much appreciated
The mic distance for cymbals no longer exists in the same format. It's a shame as I used that a lot. It's been rolled into the overheads settings instead now, with distance and width controls in there.
Question for ya Luke, I've been up and down all the forums, youtube, manual, etc. I cannot figure out how to use the 32 tracks for USB multitrack recording in Logic Pro x. Can you advise ofon how to set that up to where we can record using up to 32 tracks?
Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately I've not got Logic so I can't make a video about using it with the TD-50X. I might be able to make one for other DAWs in the future, but it's not one of the areas I explore often.
Nice video, although I am totally electronically challenged, I watch these things. I can turn my module on and do a few things also have a TD30 running audio into it for the extra triggers. The X upgrade was even a challenge for me, but it is done! I welcome the new sound of all the Bass drums, most are powerful whereas the TD50 alot of them lacked punch. The overall sound is better also, not sure if that is just because the presets are tweaked? The downside for me is I now run 2 hi hats piggybacked off a Hosa GPP-359 and my second is a CY5, its perfect I have 2 fully functional hats off one pedal, what do I do now if I upgrade to the Digi HH??? Back from a mid90s layoff about 7 months now my focus is playing, I hate computers and now my drum set is one, lol. The fact that the X now has 32USB ports instead of 10 bears no meaning for me although I know it must be good right? I appreciate all the videos you guys make and subscribe to anything good I see. Hopefully in a few months I will push some drum covers out and show that I practice what I preach. This whole electronic Kit gig is a talent in and of itself when I push further in that direction it will be guys like you that make it possible for me with your videos, thank you!
Lovely drumming! .. I find Roland sounds extremely cheap and digital. Very used to superior drummer 3 with ‘Decades’ expansion. That’s another planet. I use TD12, but just to trigger pads.
I upgraded recently and I‘m experiencing some nasty machine-gunning on snares and toms. Especially when doing double stroke rolls….Like WTF Roland??? 😳

They ruined the reggae kit especially the snare, was the first kit i went in and modified, more jazz and funk presets was welcome and youve hit the nail on the head for ambience only and fade options, was always hassle managing fade between samples and td10 foot switch technology is here at last haha all in all a good upgrade for not an unreasonable amount.
The reggae kit is definitely different, yeah. I agree that it's good to see a nice variety of jazzy/funky kits. And yeah, I think it's a pretty significant upgrade for the price. Shame that a few features are recycled from previous generations that probably should have been there before!
That reggae kit is absolutely horrendous on both modules, neither has an authentic roots sound or feel, Seems like once again this genre of music has been overlooked by Roland....
@@thedeevineswebenquiries I agree, theres so many different flavors in that genre its hard to be generic, i like a half dozen reggae kits knocking around, the snare and hat is what i focus on with some percussive elements in it, laid back- sunshine reggae, morgan heritage, ub40, tosh, marley almost all different kits needed if your trying to replicate exactly, half my kits are roots stuff, the other half more modern.
@@MrMikeydrum The problem is the Roland reggae kits/samples have never fit ANY of the different sub-genres of reggae (roots, rub a dub, lovers, dancehall, bashment etc), they have always been absolute garbage. Roland probably don't even know these subgenres exist! Listen to the reggae samples played above by Luke (absolute no disrespect intended from me to Luke btw). You couldn't possibly use them, over a reggae bassline, even if he threw down a perfect swung or syncopated hi-hat one drop riddim. They still sound/feel rock influenced and the only music I could only ever see them fitting in is a Stewart Copeland / Police-esque style groove but that’s just cross over reggae which lacks any authenticy. I’ve always felt that Roland have always thrown in these terrible kits in as a token gesture and to 'tick the box' that that this genre has been covered. For me Luke (again no disrespect!) is what I think Roland would probably define as a ‘typical end user’ and that there is where the problem lies - they solely cater to that market only. Their samples have ALWAYS been geared towards rock/metal, indie, modern music etc, (much to my frustration) and to me they seem to be blinkered to anything outside of this remit. I get it - they are the most popular genres - reggae isn’t, however when you are paying £000's for a drum module which has the capacity to store hundreds (potentially thousands) of sounds there's really no excuses, there really should be way more options - not just for reggae but all genres. You can pull up a stool and play any genre on a acoustic drum kit, it should be no different on an electric one. Most of Roland kits are modelled to sound as authentic as possible to the genres of music they are created for. For example Roland must have listened to the greats like Bonham, Peart, Grohl and many other big names and used their sounds as a base to create their own. Even if most samples are not perfect out of the box, with a bit tweaking you can get something very similar to acceptably fit in well with the music from these great artists. What did they do with reggae??!! Unless you live under a rock, everyone on planet Earth has heard a Bob Marley song. He’s no doubt THE most famous reggae musician ever - do you think any them samples Roland created would sit well in any of his songs?? Ask any reggae drummer and they will probably tell you the Wailers' drummer Carlton Barrett (RIP) is arguably the most talented roots reggae drummer that has ever lived, often imitated, never duplicated - go and listen to his signature sound on any BM track or find an isolated drum track on YT, there's loads of them, he's absolutely phenomenal. Would it not have made sense to use the most popular reggae artist music and the best reggae drummers' sound (like they no doubt did with the rock/indie drummers mentioned above) as a starting point to create more on point samples? Why on earth can’t they use some of the millions they must have in their R&D budget to get in authentic Jamaican musicians/producers in to educate/guide them to produce a few decent, authentic kits to cover most reggae sub-genres and satisfy the users who play other genres outside of ones above. Yes for the record I have played in many indie/rock bands and currently play for two soul and funk bands too, but at home I want the ability to play the music which is part of my heritage authentically. The only real option at the moment is to use e-drums to trigger Plug-Ins like EZDrummer with an expansion pack like reggae EZX which is a shame really when you've spent £000’s on a drum module which just doesn't cut it.
Absolutely no disrespect taken, and I agree with your points. I most likely am the typical end user for Roland's demographic - I mostly play stuff on the rock end of the spectrum, and the demo of the reggae kit is lifted from me playing along to a Police sound-alike track. I plan to try and make more genre kits in the future and I'll reference as much genuine material as I can if I do end up trying to tackle a reggae kit. I've got a few samples that might fit the bill but I'd have to make sure it didn't come across as a fudge.
Charging 200 after buying the hardware. And STILL there is no proper CLICK function. No time signature, be ware!! If you are into odd meters above 9 beats then prepare for a massive disappointment.
Sounds way too processed for me. This is not anything like the real deal for me. I own Superior, EZ3 and AD2. AD2 is the real deal for me. Forget all those polished plastic sounds from Roland. AD2 has the soul.

I always think that the toms sound like hitting cardboard instead of drums.
Charging 200 after buying the hardware. And STILL there is no proper CLICK function. No time signature, be ware!! If you are into odd meters above 9 beats then prepare for a massive disappointment.
Hey my name is roland no cap😂
Too bad i dont have a another child to sell to buy this drums
Sounds way too processed for me. This is not anything like the real deal for me. I own Superior, EZ3 and AD2. AD2 is the real deal for me. Forget all those polished plastic sounds from Roland. AD2 has the soul.
200 bucks for snares off? Fuck.
Of course - there are no other changes at all!
@@TheeDrumWorkshop Nothing worth 200 dollars.
Thank's for this video very useful, but you speak really quickly...
