Just a thought: the potential in each of those drum kit presets would be represented in a personal and familiar way to the viewer if Nick played perhaps a (slight variation) of one of the many unmistakable drumbeats associated with the popular historical tunes that everybody recognizes instantly.
Is there a video for setting up and recording internal inside of the module Midi And audio and then opening or transferring over to computer for Mixing? This I would like to see. Please, Because on the TD50 module I had to Mix songs sitting on my Drum set. Not Cool. So I had to pull the TD50 Module off the drum set and bring it over to my Mixing desk via Midi just to swipe out different Instruments to better fit my song track. I really wanted to use my sound design that’s in Roland TD 50 and NOT USE DRUM SOFTWARE.
Price: 7.5k
Year: 2021
Main Feature: Best Machinegun Drumsound around the World
Price: 8.3k
Year: 2024
Main Feature: being slaved and used as midi for Superior Drummer
@@oshikiri999EXACTLY! 😂 this is gonna be the next upgrade for Super Drummer 3.0 and it’s gonna really sound alive now!
the drums sound the same like they did 20 years ago. Can we get some more realistic sounding drums in those modules???
I see no reason to get roland other than the latency and quality of the kit. Running this through a vst must be amazing but its hard to fork over that much cash for something to run through superior drummer 3
@@jadedbreadncircus9159 Yeah, those toms are harsh!
@@rblew131 $11,500 down here in Australia .... Hard pass for me ....
Its better but those toms omg. Why they still do it like that.
A lot of the sound depends on which effect/“kit simulation” he’s got the module set to. It’s worth noting, that the module can be customised too though!
Still sounds like Neal Peart's early solos with e-drums. C'mon Roland, it's 2021, can't we do better than this? These things aren't exactly "affordable".
agreed. Why can't we get those tom rolls to stop sounding like al alesis SR 16?
@Andrynor Ω can you use ez drummer on them ??
My old TD-12 sounds better than this 80s sounding module. Why haven’t they improved their sounds after all these years?
Exactly. The sound doesn't match that price in any way.
I'm always expecting Nick to break into some Spock's Beard bits on these demos.
Always love your videos....really looking forward to the "next in-depth, nitty-gritty details" of the td50x
I love the pads but the sounds aren’t much better than my TD10 from 1998.
I have a TD-10. It's frikking beautiful.
I have a TD17KVX
Man Nick I love watching you play ,buddy you Rock thanks
Unfortunately the toms still have the ‘machine gun sound’ after all these years and don’t sound acoustic. That’s why I use drum sample software Superior Drummer on my old TD 12 kit.
i exactly the same
With timing and chops like that, almost any drum kit would sound decent. I don’t even play drums, I play bass. I clicked on this video out of curiosity, but stayed for the drumming. Lol
😎🥁
Awesome. I still love my Td17kvx with drum tec live drum sample sounds that I purchased from their website.
I watch for Nick.
The kit he’s playing doesn’t matter. He’s a great drummer
Still has that machine gun like sound even after so many years. 0:18 - 0:21
Agreed
Roland videos sound better in that matter... Maybe they ask drummers who play in official clips NOT to play several strokes in a row on the same pad to avoid machine-gunning?
@@j.b.c4998 i mean aren’t electronic drums supposed to be able to do whatever an acoustic drum can? you don’t usually limit yourself in playing certain drums. in fact floor tom rolls are quite common.
Yeah they should call it the Al Capone kit, sounds like one of his machine guns!
@@coloaten6682 🤣🤣🤣
The thing that always pisses me off about Roland kits is that the latest ones are exactly what electronic drums SHOULD be, yet it comes with an insane price tag.
Which one? I wanna buy it asap
other than being in a successful touring band as a drummer...you have the best job in the industry!!!
This is a better job. Touring is brutal.
Always love the drumming! I grab my best iem's and turn it up!
You’re my favorite drum reviewer! You do such a thorough job!
In the 90’s I was playing a kick kat, dauz pads and Visulite plastic cymbals through an Alesia D4. Technology has progressed (along with the price tag).
love this drummer...
😁❤️
Roland you KickAss!🤘🥁🤘
I have it's little brother (TD-50K2) and it's amazing 😀
Seems just like the guitar multi-effects processors of the early 2000's. Lots of bells and whistles, but none that you would actually pull off at a gig. Guitar modelers are so good now that you can't even tell them apart from a real tube amp, yet here we are where an electronic kit can still be picked out immediately even before the second measure. I don't get it and I sure as heck don't get the price tag.
Sad but true. 45 seconds into the video I was disappointed by the snare sounding like it was coming from FastTracker 2. If there's anything else going on there except a handful of samples with a quick crossfade it sure isn't working.
So I could probably afford this in 20 years when the price comes down! Rock ‘n’ roll! Thanks for the great video Nick!
I need this in my life
Great Drumming Nick !!
Thank you for an absolutely masterful objective review. Especially grateful you actually played the thing. These is a growing trend on RUclips where reviews of musical instruments and gear are largely spoken. That, to my mind, is completely pointless.
really like your Sweetwater videos - well done!
Much better demo than Roland's. I'm looking forward to the TD50X upgrade to my TD50 module and the new VH14D hats. This kit is a great option if you want something super nice to practice on, have lots of options for sounds and not bother the neighbors. We have recorded some great demos with this kit.
Absolutely me too! Sounds expensive... LOL! 2 sets of hats will be cool too.
Thank you Mr. Nick D’Virgilio for this wonderful presentation ! X🤘🏻X
this hi hat looks amazing. Big black spot on all e drums
Thanks, Nick. Excellent demo. I'd like to see a hi-bred approach, TD-50 with acoustic snare and cymbals.
Of course he loves playing these drums.
Nice job, Nick!
5:56 - Sounds like the opening to Casey's Top 40.
Amazing video, sound is superb!!!
Thank you Sweetwater, so far at this date and time the best demo of the VH14 Hi Hat as even Roland has not put out a quality demo vid on the details!
i feel like drum plugins sound way better than electronic kits, these sound like they have 1 sample per velocity area, no round robins, which is what gives the real feel of sampled sounds
It depends on the module, some of them have real samples with multi-velocity and round robbins, 2Box for instance (128 samples per articulation !)
@@j.b.c4998 the one time i worked with a 2box was on a metal tour and we used it just for the kick, we had it set as 1 shot sample because you know... metal.
i tried a TD30k module once and some kits were better than others but when we plugged the midi out to our studio pc with ez drummer 2 it sounded way better
@@DavideGuerri Concerning EZ drummer vs TD30 it doesn't suprise me. For metal, indeed, one shot may be enough!
TRUE. They still can't nail the toms sounds, for some reason they still sound robotic. EZX sounds are way better.
Absolutely. I know they've improved over the years but to me they still sound like some of the awful/artificial 'general midi' sounds I was using back in the late 90s. I have no idea why roland doesn't just buy or partner with the AddictiveDrums or EZDrummer teams and licence the sounds etc. Very odd.
For $7500 it should make the user sound like Thomas Lang. :)
Killer man!
FINALY!!!!! A drummer who realy plays the drums..... instead of all the jazz-fuzzy drummers who just jabs with a loose wrist. Thanks!!!
For $9000.00 you need to include the hi hat stand and the snare stand.
Great in depth review. Just one question though, why does Nick keep saying the ambience fader is something new for the TD-50X module? It's been on the TD-50 module for years.
Thank god Roland is including a 2nd tom in the new series. Having only one tom for the flagship model was a huge misstep. Glad they corrected this.
hahah gotta love this guy and his approach
Not a fan of some sounds they chose to display here, like the Hi-Hat sounds for instance, but some are decent. Pretty sure a deeper review into the presets and samples would help bring a better idea of how good it can sound. I've heard digital drums that sound pretty realistic. Even digital plugins like EZ Drummer can have great sounds on it. Something that always seems to give away a set of E-Drums is when you do fast rolls. The snare here doesn't make it too obvious, but the toms really have that digital characteristic.
I really like the looks of this set and all the technology it features. Good dynamics on the pads, the muffling Cymbals and different hit spots, the module seems to be very advanced with all the sound effects like, compression, ambiance, and pitch shift.
7:06 That was some sweet Jazz, though.
Sounds amazing. Love the hihats.
I really want to get this drum set! :)
Check out the Efnote kits. ATV 2.0. I love my ATV kit but the Efnote module does all the things.
My Future kit
I own a TD 20K it makes it everyday!
🖖🏻🇫🇷😎🇫🇷😎🇫🇷🖖🏻
That's right...Act Now...Get yours today for the very low, low price of only $100,000! All kidding aside, despite the price, it's another great video from Sweetwater. Especially Nick's playing that's always enthusiastic and enjoyable.
Can it sound like my DWs collector series? That would be great 😊
I swear, the Tom sounds in the Simmons SDS1000 sounded more realistic than the Rolands do 30+ years later. Might as well MIDI this up to a Mimic Pro and get some decent toms.
Td-27 superior drummer 3 AND a new M1 MacBook Pro. There i just saved your a million dollars.
Just started playing with experimental type group and thought that having a set of e drums would be nice as acoustic drums don’t exactly sound good with electronic music and having different sounds would be nice. I erroneously thought they would be not too bad as far as cost went maybe 2000.00 or something did not expect 6500.00 dollars. Looks like this will take more research than I thought lol.
I wonder if they can take a bounding every night. They sound pretty good but still I am partial to the acoustic kit. Since they are triggers they are fragile.
The fact that this is what $5k buys you in crazy discouraging. Nick D’s playing is stellar as always though. At least there’s that.
Were they going for a retro 1st gen edrum sound?
Utterly amazing but it still sounds like an electronic kit especially the toms
Great review. Question: Can you use a pedal switch for a snare throw-off? I have it in my TD20 and TD30, but the original TD50 did not have that feature.
Hey, Raymond. Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately no. Nothing has changed in that regard.
I hope this helps.

This one definitely sound as Roland usually sound...completely different from what you can ear in the roland's new demo video of the TD50X! I suspected that the sounds in that videos where deeply processed in a DAW...and now we have the proof!!
Exactly what I think!
@Ed Who is going to use a DAW on stage?? More latency, more crash risks, a laptop which can fall, damaged or be stolen, etc. The only advantage of using a Roland module with its factory sounds is precisely to avoid all these inconveniences!
What I mean is only that the new sounds are not so good as they want us to believe...but they are the usual sounds we know from years! If I had to deep process them (in a DAW or in a PA mixer) to make them at least usable I prefer to start from better and realistic sounds...as the ones of the Mimic Pro for example! No way to pay to have this upgrade!
@@marcogiusfredi6552 Totally agree with you!
The digital HH/Snare/Ride is a massive selling point. Roland needs to improve their out of the box samples obviously and they need to build in multi sample triggering to provide nuance which will eliminate machine gunning. If they did that, they would be untouchable in the electronic drum market. The main thing that drives me crazy about Roland [as a long time Roland fan], is that they never put everything in one kit. They always take something away. We have to pay premium prices for their gear, so they should treat their customers better.
Feel seems greatly improved, but the sound can't touch AD2 or SD3
Great improvements in triggering, sensors, hardware, realistic feel when playing..... but after all these years still machine gun effect and poor sounds. I wonder why don't they join a good company like Steven Slate, Toontrack, XLN audio or so to load their sound modules with decent samples.
hmm... I need to get this for myself & son.
In before:
"It's expensive"
"It sounds like a machine gun"
"*insert $500 kit here* sounds better"
Blah blah blah
LOL! You are so right!
That's the problem. I will receive my VH-14D in june but i have to upgrade my TD-50 to a TD-50X to have the full potential of the hi-hat (positional sensing). I have one sound i like with the TD-50 (studio A) and i'm afraid i will loose that one sound and not find any i like in the TD-50X. So far, all the new sounds i heard of the TD-50X are bad. I just want one real acoustic sound and even in 2021, this seems so hard for Roland.
Yeah, the sounds don’t impress me! I think the mimic pro is still the best module out right now.
Check out the Efnote kits. ATV 2.0. I love my ATV kit but the Efnote module does all the things.
Nicce sound. Beautiful. Snare, ride, kick, hi hat - very nice. But toms...
One can only dream....
Ugh. Ok, so y'all please tell me what I need to make this work with Superior Drummer 3. Do I need the module? I need a laptop and SD3 software for sure.
Is this better than the Alesis strike pro se? Both are ridiculously expensive
i need!!!!
I am stepping stone to those who further criticize the sounds of this very expensive and recent model. Many of the presets on the TD50 are underwhelming as well as the ones on the TD30 that I have. Only 1 preset is good, and you also have to intervene with various controls. But is it worth paying so much for so little if we exclude the convenience and potential of this machine? There would be one aspect that is never shown that would lead the 50 to be a really good choice: hearing it with user-uploaded sampled sounds. What functions of the control unit affect these samples? So yes, we can forget the presets and work on the best!
whatever Nick plays, i wanna buy. He makes the kits he play sound so good.
Damnit, I want a “digital snare!”
Does the VH14D still use a pressure clutch like the previous generations to detect open/close or does it employ an optical sensor like the ATV hats?
@Ed - If you cant grasp why it matters then obviously you don't currently own a TD50 so move along.
Hello, Chris! At least at current, Roland has not elaborated much on the technology used in the VH-14D other than it has multiple bow sensors to support positional sensing and improved touch muting/choking. I'm certain there will be more info to come once these start arriving.
Thanks for the interest!

Now this is a absolutely great drum kit, don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome! But I just have to say that there is nothing that beats a “real drum kit” nothing beats a real, authentic sounding drum kit, and that’s simply because it’s real. Now I own a Alesia nitro mesh electronic drum kit and a acoustic pacific drums drum kit, and the difference is just not comparable. The e-drum kit just sucks compared to the real drum kit and that’s just because it’s real versus fake in this case, but this is by far one of the most advanced and “real sounding” drum kits, and I got to say, I would love to own this but, I can bet you right now that this kit is worth way more than my pay grade, and I get payed $15.00 an hour. But man would I love to own this! Great job Roland and great review Sweetwater! You guys rock! And you guys always come in handy when I need gear!
Upppp well yep, hahaha I knew it! This kit is a $7000 kit, of course, come on now, who’s goofing to by this? I mean seriously! This is insane! I can buy John Bonham’s signature drum kit for half of this! Wow
Electric kits are necessary. We can't all practice on a full acoustic kit and as a gigging musicians having access to an electric kit is incredibly useful for venues with sound limiters which are becoming more and more common.
Liked for playing, Roland drums sounds are so one dimensional
How can it be there is 9 things but only 7 cables put in and the snare is not in the snare?
I have the td 50 set as well is the 200.00 upgrade worth it?
Great kit, great demo, great drumming Nick. However, the sounds have poor dynamics and Roland needs to address this.
I feel the same way.
Yeah, I thought the same. The notes in the tom rolls sound very uniform, like they're "triggered". I mean, they technically _are,_ but obviously they're not supposed to....
Bought the first edition of V-Drums and another set a few years later. Nothing changed sound wise. Same shit year after year. Machine gun sounding snare etc..
Is there a mallet kit on this? That’s the only thing I miss as far as drum sounds go on my TD-30KV. I love mallets on toms and cymbals and I really miss being able to get that sound. Especially mallet swells on cymbals.
Hey, soarornor. Thanks so much for reaching out. Unfortunately, no. Not from the factory. There are, however, some cool 3rd party sounds that you can upload, you can find them on the internet.
I hope this helps.

Nice kit, good sound at all except the last floor tom that reminds we have listen an e-drum kit so finally we choose to play with software to achieve the perfection of natural drums sound!!!This thing that is crazy is that this kit costs too much to have this sound from an floor tom as a flagship of Roland!! Guys at RND maybe take a look at this sound!!
ALL toms sound like crap, as if they have only one trigger. This kit is a digrace and an insult to drummers.
im wondering if this has the same bluetooth option as the TD27 to play along with music?
it does not.
@@andybdrumming2191 that sucks. Thanks.
Nice kit..If used with Toontrack’s Superior-drums.
I was wondering why the TD-50KV was on sale pretty much everywhere. Sigh, guess I'm gonna need some extra scratch
I'm not sure what to get this or the yamaha dtx10k what do you guys think?
Sounds good, but I still hear that same sound twice in a row problem. Especially on the toms. The physical modeling tech still needs some round robin features.
Very educational. But menu walk thru would have been nice.
Top end kit and it still doesnt sound like real drums. Why doesnt Roland use the same sounds as the new wireless DW set ? I want to buy a top end kit but i want realistic sounds that sound like a top end acaustic set. How can i acomplish this ? And has there been any changes in Roland sounds since this video was made two years ago ?
soooooo giveaway for one of these?? pls
What type of audio gadget are best for e drums. Stereo with equalizer.? Bass amp? Tnx
Hey, Jofhrey. Thanks so much for reaching out. It depends. You can run this through a house PA for a live show. They also make a drum monitor:

I wanna get this so bad…so many good things and it would work well with what I’m wanting to do, but I CANNOT get over the sound of the toms. They just sound very obviously electronic. Everything else sounds so good and the toms just stand out in a bad way unfortunately. In my humble opinion of course. If anyone agrees, is there a way around it? Or a way to fix the sounds so they sound more like a mic’d up drum kit?
Acustic drums: "look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power"
Does it have velocity sensors? I don't like the machine-gun sound.
Love the video! Price at 10,000+$ CAD overly priced
How acoustically loud are these drums in the room? The bass drum looks like a regular bass drum that would piss off the neighbors. A lot of people want electronic drums so they can play in areas where they can't make as much noise as they would like to and a loud bass drum is definitely not an option. Thanks.
Snare, cymbals and hihats are convincing, however toms are still so '90es. But it is a great kit.
Maybe it's just me but it almost sounds as if the triggers have been set too sensitive and the responding sounds are therefore maxed out all the time on the snare and the toms. I think that if you setup trigger levels properly on any edrum kit you should actually never truly reach the mamimum value (midi velocity of 127 so to speak) because only then can you be certain that you are not exceeding the maximum. If that happens you'll lose a lot of nuance since all hits will be exactly equally loud.
