    Glad to see Roland utilizing that 3rd USB input. when the TD50 module came out with 3 but only used two I knew they were at some point going to use the 3rd. Logically that would be the HH. As is typical Roland they took years and years to do this.
    Any way happy to see a digital HH finally. The biggest thing that I think they need to add now is an actual bell sound on the HH much like on a ride cymbal. That would be awesome!

    I bought mine and will be returning it. The reality is that this is just a glorified VH13 since the open close mechanism is essentially the same, so in reality an analog trigger and not a digital one. Also, the TD27 does not use the full potential of this due to the lack of sounds. It's also considerably louder acoustically compared to the VH10 and sincerely I don't really see any significant improvements from the VH10 so I'll be keep using that.
    I'm gutted, Roland had an opportunity of doing something great and missed out on it. This is not the same jump of improvement that the digital snare or ride were

      The VH10 absolutely sucks. One of mine started double triggering and then broke, got it replaced and now the new one is doing the same thing. It is just not designed very well, and the one piece mechanism means that the stick impact is not absorbed and the pad just wobbles instead. the VH14D is the most accurate, nice feeling e-hihat on the market in my opinion, hands down (except I have never tried EFNote, keep that in mind)

    @laindump911 Год назад

    This video got me wondering, not sure if you would see this, but are you worried about the newer digital roland cymbals for the mid-lower end users? I just feel these USB inputs are going to become more and more common (albeit slowly) and roland will use it to vendor-lock you into their products.
    Also, a lot of older modules won't have it, so budget users will eventually be constrained and pushed into buying newer products that support them, even if it wasn't their intention.
    And one last point is the repairability, using the USB input suddenly makes it a lot more proprietary, you can't just buy a cheapo stereo cable when those USB inputs hardwired into the cymbal go bad.

    As I've mentioned before, digital or not, what matters most nowadays is the sensor and 'optical' sensor is indeed a game changer and won't settle for anything without this for accuracy and precision and ATV delivered it (have not tried Ef-note yet).

    • @sabahoudini
      @sabahoudini 3 года назад

      And yet justin still thinks these are the best hihats in the industry even though they don't have the optical hihat controller. Don't see why optical would be a game changer TBH. It does the exact same thing.

    • @thedrumdoctor
      @thedrumdoctor 3 года назад

      @@sabahoudini Although they achieve the same goal, they are 2 very different methods of sending CC information to a module or a VST. The Roland ‘plunger’ method is mechanical and the optical bounces light off a reflective surface. The Roland system is designed to work with its own software and translate the CC info according to what it expects. When you pass through CC info from a VH-** to a Roland module to a VST, there are discrepancies in what comes out the other end. I’ve watched the CC information in Addictive Drums from the VH and fully closed on a correctly calibrated H/H on a Roland module isn’t note 127 in a VST. I was getting between 119/120 as ‘fully closed’ information from VH/TD-20 setup. As soon as I went optical the Roland module was able to pass through full CC info without being stopped by the limitations of a ‘plunger’ system. It is archaic in comparison.

    • @sabahoudini
      @sabahoudini 3 года назад +2

      @@thedrumdoctor Being an electronic drum designer and software developer I can say that what you are describing is a non issue. What a sensor outputs is a voltage from say 0-3.3v. Or 0.3 - 2.9. Or what ever arbitrary range it outputs. The software just maps the 0-3.3v to go from 0-127. It's very easy in software. I agree that the optical sensors are a great design but I just don't see them as "game changers". Justin has said that he thinks the VH14 is the best hihat out there. Before that he said the VH13 was the best closely followed by atv. Both of these use the same type of sensor. If it was a "game changer" the difference would be so big that no reviewer would ever prefer the rolands.

    • @thedrumdoctor
      @thedrumdoctor 3 года назад

      @@sabahoudini well at the end of the day, it’s what works for the individual. The optical design was a ‘game changer’ for me personally on my A2E setup. I watched the TD-20 and VH-11 fail to pass over the fully closed information to SD3 and AD2, despite the calibration in the module sounding correct. The optical controller did what I wanted it to, out of the box, no fiddly calibrating. I knew it had made a huge difference when a friend of mine who has Roland TD-12 and a VH-11 and uses VSTs said to me, “how come your Hi-Hats sound so realistic now?” after he heard a few recordings I’d done. There is a massive improvement in the information the optical controller is translating for my playing technique, which is all that counts when I’m laying down drum tracks. It might not work for everyone, but I would recommend trying it if you have exhausted all the workarounds with a ‘plunger’ controller. Undoubtedly, there are more people using the ‘plunger’ type than optical, but you couldn’t pay me money to use one again.

      I'm primarily a photographer, with drumming being secondary in my creative life. But, as a photographer, going back to the early 1970s, let me tell all the acoustic drummers out there waiting for e-drums to catch up with the depth of their analog experience: that pivot happened in photography circa 2007 (with the release of the Canon 5D). I shot with film cameras for three decades prior to my switching to digital, and I would not go back to "analog" now for anything! Digital cameras far surpass film cameras in probably 99 out of a 100 data points, with the one exception being some "romantic" quality that digital can't satisfy. But, as a drummer, I am now in the market for an e-drum kit. (I'm likely to go with the Roland V line, because I don't need drum shells to impress anybody hanging out in my basement as I beat on my kit!) Wow ... I am amazed by the anxiety I am feeling about buying too early, before the technology gets better at approximating "the real thing." For me, as a photographer, the "real thing" switch happened more than a decade ago, and it is now only about which digital camera I prefer, not about which one approximates what a film camera "can do."
      In the meantime, I really want to thank Justin and his 65 Drums for helping me in this process. I have found his RUclips channel to be a really sweet and very smart guide to my figuring out my coming new era as a longtime basement drummer.

      Simple comparison, drumming vs. photography: How many top-tier pro drummers use e-drums exclusively; how many top-tier photographers even OWN a film camera?! I’ve had the VH14 hats for a month. They’re terrific but I can’t say they are miles better than my old VH10 or 11 hats. It’s depends on what you expect. For me, they feel like an old shoe, they’re not glamorous but totally dependable like an acoustic set of hats. It’s more the lack of annoyance that I notice.
    The improvements are in the nuances so if fine and nuanced hi hat play is you’re thing then you’ll love them. For the average or beginner drummer though a basic set of e hats will do just fine.

    I can’t believe Roland are still using that ancient ‘plunger’ system for generating CC notes - and charging big bucks for the ‘privilege’. Optical controllers are the way forward and will blow anyone’s mind when compared to the limitations of proprietary systems like Roland’s.
    I recently bought a KitToys/Drone Triggers optical controller and it was a game changer. You want to generate 127 continuous control notes and achieve no-fuss Hi-Hat controller calibration? Then ditch the ancient ‘plunger’ system and go for optical. I couldn’t get rid of my VH-12 quick enough and it disturbs me to think of how many wasted hours I spent trying to generate realistic CC information in VSTs via Roland’s limited proprietary hardware.
    Roland seem to have rested on their laurels in this area and drummers no longer have to spend thousands on their tech to get better results. They are starting to look like the record companies at the end of the 1990s who behaved like Ostriches when the internet and MP3s exploded. I guess the saving grace for them lies in the robustness of their products for touring use. But 99% of the drummers I know don’t play live with full electronic kits and only want an e-kit to try and achieve the most realistic playing experience at home with the least ambient noise. Honestly, you couldn’t pay me to go back to a ‘plunger’ Hi-Hat controller.
