Marnie's Bio:
Canadian pianist Marnie Laird, praised as "…a technically immaculate, probing and authoritative protagonist" (The Miami Herald), enjoys an active career as a collaborative pianist, chamber musician, and soloist. Prior to founding Brooklyn Duo and Brooklyn Classical, Marnie spent three years as principal pianist of the New World Symphony in Miami under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. In high demand as a pianist in New York City, she worked with several opera companies, including the Gotham Chamber Opera, and was also on staff as a collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School after graduating. Recent performances have taken her to Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Merkin Hall, where her performance with cellist Matthew Zalkind for the Concert Artists Guild competition was broadcast live on WFMT radio.
Originally from Vancouver, BC, Marnie has been the recipient of numerous Canadian awards, including top prizes from the Canadian Music Competitions, Canadian Music Teachers' Association, and the BC Arts Council. Wonderful performance once again.. your performance perfection is at it's peak equally as your own beauty...
Two Thoughts:
1. You play beautifully!
2. I can't imagine what a nightmare it was getting that piano in that room.
So I was curious on that question too and asked my piano teacher and she said you can take off the wheels on the bottom of most pianos and roll it on its side.
Obviously the house was built around the piano haha
If only I had the problem of how to fit my Steinway into the house :)
That's why you pay to make it someone else's problem
It’s not a nightmare it is a joy to get that piano anywhere for a musician.
I CAN PLAY THIS EASILY!!! The video I mean
Hatcx _ 😂😂
best comment
well I CAN PLAY THIS ON MY grand piano...uh, as long as its plugged in and Ive got the internet up and going, paired with my QRS system...i have a Boston/Steinway 6 G piano...is a poor girls Steinway, but still awesome!

Funny!!
Teacher: you only have ten fingers
Beethoven: I can’t hear you

Hello everyone and thanks for watching! I've always loved playing this Sonata and I had so much fun working on it again and finally recording it. We just got a pair of new mics for the piano and we're SO excited about the difference in sound. (Listen with headphones to get the full effect!) Let me know in the comments if you'd like to hear me record the other movements too. Hope everyone has a great weekend :) -Marnie
Yas please record the other movements too!! Your piano playing is so flawless!
@Teresa Katalyn That's so nice, thank you! And I definitely dedicated LOTS of hours over the past few months to practising this sucker. ;)
Brooklyn Classical
Yes! Please keep playing! You are the best pianist I've ever heard! 💕 Xxx
Brooklyn Classical for sure you should keep playing, it's amazing!!
Brooklyn Classical please do it! Sounds great!
This one of the most accurate tempos I've ever seen played.
Valentina Lisitsa?
I don't like it at this tempo, even if it's the good one, I prefer it a bit slower to appreciate it well
@@bullridermusic2054 I agree with you. Valentina is better.
great, but what about the sound?
@@alex1chang1 nah lisistsa plays like a robot there's zero feeling in any of her playing kempff plays this significantly better
It is now April 2023. This piece played like this by Marnie, without sheet music, says it all. May your life continue to inspire and bless all whom have the privilege of watching you and hearing you and Patrick make beautiful music together for the remainder of your blessed lives. Stay as sweet as you are. Blessings all ✝🕊

Stunning. My Grandmother was a well known pianist in Winnipeg, she would have been brought to tears watching this. She passed in 2014 at 91
Lovely to see, hear, and feel the power of your talent. Brings me back to sitting next to my Nana, on the piano bench as a youngster. Thank you, Marnie!
ML&R, from NW Sask☘️
I cant read this while listening
Stunning is the perfect word! WOW. I'm so thankful Marnie can share her gift like this!
This is (in my opinion) EXACTLY how this piece should be played - full of expression and perfect examples of rubato in key moments. I have started re-learning this piece again and when i finally have it mastered i hope it won't be a million miles away from this version. Bravo!
BroadwayPianist Watch Valentina Lisitsas Interpretation :)
The ztreygh I also adore Valentina's interpretation :)
And are we going to hear it sometime?
I agree
Damn, valentina is like wow.... I have a crush on her
The tone on that piano is absolutely beautiful!
My first thought was the unsatisfactory tone of the piano. Ideally there should be a sense of untapped richness, of space. This one, though lovely, sounds limited, as though it's trapped in a space.
Yes indeed!
I agree, beautiful tone indeed! It's light and gentle but also super buttery, just exquisite.
Just Steinway and sons
Sounds like it has soundboard problems actually, and too soft of hammers
You are so worthy of that piano..God bless you
Eli Shem.... Nice beard 👍🏻
And you are so worthy of that beard.
This performance is seriously underrated. The delicate touch is absolutely amazing and the recording quality is superb.
truly
performance underrated.
I am a Pianist myself and to be honest, I have been away from the Piano for a long time. I just didn't feel like I was getting any better. And watching this makes me wanna play again and try harder. Thank you for showing your talent to the world and be an inspiration.
Never give up!!!! Sorry for the late reply but how did your practice go? Did it pay off?
KouseiXDTOne Deaf
Ditto that
Take video every month, definitely help noticing the progression
Her superb talent shows in everything she performs. Even when she's playing background to the cello her mastery stands out.
You're a great pianist
Thank you!
The cleanest i've ever seen.
Coco _ thanks :'v
You need to listen to more recordings then lol
still lots of things to work on only playing it doesnt make it perfect
Beethoven was a genius who revolutionized music and brought it into a new era. He represents the crossroads between the classical and romantic musical eras. While the notes here are relatively simple to play the tempo is grueling and requires hours of practice to coordinate the finger movements with the rapid timing. This is a performance I would show as an example to musicians wanting to master this movement. Magnicficent!
This was an amazing performance. The tempo was a great speed, the dynamics were flawless. Beethoven would have been proud👏
INSANE skills!!! To play this crazy piece by memory, tells me that you love it. There's never a day where I see a bad performance from this channel.
its muscle memory
Playing this piece from memory is the least difficult part about playing this piece.
I'm thinking about getting a piano and getting back in. I want to learn this one. It'll have to be by memory , like all the classics I played because I can't read music. I play by ear. I figured 1st movement took a year to learn. Probably 2 on this one.
@@SuperDobieGirl
If you can't read sheets, watch Synthesia videos. Much easier than by ear.
Guido Anselmi that is a bad habit
Finally someone who doesn't mess up the score by trying to show off! Best piece I've seen played in a long time. Amazing work!
i get back here from time to time. this one is one of the best versions i have ever heard. you can hear every single note distinct and clear... this is so pleasant
Me too!
I'm astounded by the fact there isn't a scrap of sheet music to be seen that is amazing skill
I've watched every 3rd movement video on youtube and this is legit. So legit. Inspiring stuff.
MIKFLX haha same! i agree with you completley
have you seen Valentina Lisitsa? by far the best cover of this piece.
Valentina Lisitsa is by far the best! :D
Watch Valentina's. That's the best one.
Breathtaking. I remember being proud when my piano teacher said I nailed the balance between my left and right rands in the first movement, and that was after 10 years of lessons. The pedal work and dynamics in this performance are absolutely insane for a piece that’s so complex.
Dude she’s insane ... her tempo and feel of this ... amazing
Probably one of the most expressive versions I’ve ever heard. God damn this is good
Beautiful touch. Never feels rushed, as many other performances of the 3rd do. My favourite performance of this piece by far.
O
I have watched this video 50 times in the last two weeks. By far the best I have ever heard the 3rd movement played. No one else even comes close to your speed and style. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
The intensity and the way she is engrossed is so soothing
Tempo is spot on, anyone who says otherwise knows naught. Pedal underused, but that's her unique interpretation. Overall, amazing performance!
This piece was not meant to use much pedal, for the concept of pedal was still completely new during Beethoven’s era. Besides, too much pedal and this movement of the sonata easily becomes muddled and unclear. It’s not an opinion
I’d say there was a little too much rubato in some sections, and tempo variations. Beethoven is most of the time metronomic, with little stretches of time here and there for musical inflection. But it’s definitely not as flexible as Chopin. The tempo in this performance was great, but there were many tempi throughout.
Go on, then show us how it’s done…. ;)
By far the most amazing interpretation and performance of this piece I’ve heard.
I've heard many people play this piece and i can safelly say nobody can play it like u its just bloody brilliant
Fast and heavy fingers! The best version Ive found in youtube. Congratulations!
I love Moonlight Sonata, especially the 1st & 3rd movements and you did so well!!!❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭 I am also a pianist and have always wanted to play this, but I gave up. You've inspired me to try again! (:
Yay!! ❤️❤️
Britney A. If you can play this, you should be able to play everything
Aramovies // Aram Isaac thats true. ive been learning this for months, its no easy task.... but, if you work hard and keep at it youll start to see yourself improve! never give up
Aramovies // Aram Isaac nah, not really... this actually looks pretty easy compared to hard Chopin or Liszt pieces... I don't think you can play everything after this but you can play everything after mastering Chopin or sth
I can play this but I can't play everything so yeah...
This brings together Gould's clear structuralism and some more Romantic lyricism, neither rushing it nor slowing it down in a sentimental, pompous fashion (like many pianists do). Perfect!
One of the most pulsating pieces in the piano repertoire rendered with stunning clarity. I can't help but imagine it reflecting the crescendo and diminuendo in Beethoven's psyche.
Absolutely stunning! To play such a difficult piece so delicately...just beautiful.
Fantastic! I've always felt this third movement as if Beethoven captured the spirit of Bach
see, this is what I love about music, you can tell she’s really into her playing and feeling so many emotions, it’s so amazing watching someone experience this through playing. I love your technique so much, i’m definitely subscribing.
Marnie you fed my very spirit as you played. Here I am years after your live performance, but the intensity and passion speaks volumes. I would love to watch you live!!
Wow. I'm speechless. This is how I would play, in my dreams!

Still the best.
OMG!! GIRL!! THIS WAS THE FIRST SONG THEY PLAYED IN YOUR LIE IN APRIL!! You are the best!! Teach me your ways 🙏
I cannot not hit the like button on seeing anybody playing 3rd movement! Max respect 🙏🏻
I was listening to it at half speed. Amazing to hear all the notes played so accurately. At normal speed, I get chills because it is so amazing it’s hard to comprehend the level of skill involved. I love this!!!!
I've watched this so many times. It is actually the most amazing , impressive piece I have ever watched. Such talent ❤

I thought the same hahaha
I agree, this is was beautiful and insanely impressive, but, I think that you should see Valentina lisitsa. Her's is breathtaking.
La campenella is the best hehehe
this is incredible! i've listened to this over ten times in a row. im not even kidding. keep up the amazing work, i hope to see more of your videos soon! ❤️
That is so nice, thank you!
ivana m Jesus you spent 1 hour of ur life listening to this kinda sad really
Xavi Ricardos and now i'm back a year later listening for another hour! but you probably spend hours on end everyday on your phone or watching tv or writing rude comments or something else pointless, so watching a beautiful and inspiring video is hardly sad compared to that, no? the only sad thing here is your hypocrisy
Beethoven is the ultimate master of all time, and you are playing the masters music perfectly.
That was very smooth. One of the best I've heard and seen on the youtubes. Not a version where the whole thing is rushed as if they're in a hurry to go to the bathroom or the rice pot is overflowing on the stove. Very enjoyable thank you very much for sharing.
6 minutes of music memorised and played amazingly, how do you even
I finished learning all of the notes to this months ago, and I still cannot fathom how one can play it this well. This is the best playthrough of this piece on youtube, hands down!
Absolutely astounding ! Thank you, You and your husband bring much joy to all who listen to you
This is the best performance ever recorded of the best piece of music ever written.
Absolutely stunningly played. So mesmerising. I'm learning this now and can't wait to master it!
Magnificently masterful. Loved the articulation and the fact that you played the softer more round bits as such. A lot of people tend to smash down those broken chords to get faster and forget that the softness and smooth flowing sound of the piece is really what makes it go to life.
This is one of the best performances I have ever heard of this piece. Very accurate tempo 👏👏
More unrecognized talent... This deserves atleast 10 million views
Wow... I never knew she was this amazing... when I first saw their duet videos, she didn’t play anything that was hard, and now I see this... she’s a pro
Beethoven would be so proud of you. Outstanding!
This is like near perfection best ive ever seen among most who have played this. EVEN THO I AM 3 YEARS LATE I just needed to say this
I bed, just like me, when you started listening to this, this wasn’t the “Moonlight Sonata” you expected. I’ve heard this melody before, just didn’t know it’s the Moonlight Sonata as well. Brilliantly played!
Only a MILLION votes. My God. There should be at least 5 MILLION... Back this outstanding performance with at least 4 million more votes.
Votes? What are you on about

More impressive than her quick hands is that she used no sheet for this piece. Amazing memory! Also I love that she is not tired before playing for 5-6 minutes.
Not using sheet , isn't that hard. I mean if you practice a lot (She did for sure) you keep every single note in mind. Nevertheless a really good interpretation Of this piece
Tbh I like playing by ear I’m pretty terrible even though I should be better but I legit can’t read sheet music easily it’s too hard.
I am 16 and have been working on this piece for the past year for my recital that is next week. I can say from experience that the memory is definitely not the most challenging part. The amount of technique used in this piece is astounding and the memory just comes naturally witht the amount of practice needed to perform this piece.
Payton Evans It’s definitely the advanced technique that presents the most difficulty. The muscle memory happens by itself as you practice - you don’t really need to put effort into memorizing a piece for that reason
This is one of my favorite movements by Beethoven. Thank so much for an excellent perfomance.
Beethoven would have been so proud of you !!!
Absolutely Amazing!
beethoven was brilliant
1st and 3mvt of moonlight sonata is truely from heaven
WAW! I love everything about this! The performance, the production, the piano, the pianist! Utterly fantastic! Just amazing. Really inspiring me to get going with the 3rd mvt! Thank yOU!
I don't know about music. However, I listened to all interpretations of this piece and this is how I wanted to hear it
Amazing in this piece i can see the history, I can watch Napoleon Being beaten in Waterloo
DAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMM!!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOD! Nailed it.
WOW! Great job! The recording was clear and finger were on fire. I could listen to this a thousand more times...and maybe I shall.
hard to separate Marnie from the music she-it is beautiful - Regal - romantic flawless.

What you do is amazing. Very smooth and touching. Thanks for this great video.
this piano sounds amazing and so does the pianist
LOVED this. I'd say this is my favorite recording of this movement. Brilliant technique and excellent voicing. I'd be over the moon excited if you did Busoni's transcription of Bach's Chaconne.
Wow...that was beautiful. Thank you
Beautiful playing, thank you!
yes marnie please record the other movements. given you have provided the best clair de lune on youtube any recording from you is a joy. alan
Thank you so much, Alan. What a lovely comment!
