I believe it was a valid question but the fact that he asked that meant that he didn't believe her to begin with. Which kind of brings us back to him undermining a lot of what she said the entire episode. People keep bringing up cancer and how you can't self diagnose that. Well if someone came up and told you that they had cancer you wouldn't be like "and a doctor clinically diagnosed you with that" would you?
I believe that Amanda was feeling like he was belittling her and undermining everything that she was saying and she probably just got nervous and wanted to get away from that part of a conversation as unscathed as possible. Rejection sensitivity is a real thing.

I minored in psychology and one of the first things my abnormal psychology teacher told us was taking the class will make us think we have the disorders we learn about; but what defines a disorder is that it disrupts our functioning (friendships, relationships, work, etc.), Furthermore we learned about the diagnosis and treatment process. One of the most important things we learned was the differential diagnosis process. There are disorders that present with similar symptoms and there is a process by which you determine which of the multiple disorders it can be. In my mind she went looking for an autism diagnosis and made one for herself. But she does not have the proper knowledge or training to do a proper ddx. Not to mention, no one, not even a doctor can diagnose themselves with anything. She should have kept the same language and said that she believes she is on the spectrum. To be diagnosed means someone with knowledge, experience, expertise, and credentials has diagnosed you.

    • @RachelNHarrison
      @RachelNHarrison Месяц назад +49

And a diagnosis is not a ticket to avoid accountability. An actual diagnosis comes with action - possible therapy, medication, etc. But also self awareness, better knowledge of self and how you present in the world/ how people experience you. And while we shouldn’t be people pleasers we can adapt to function better. She seems completely unwilling to do that.

All of this! it pains me as a clinician to hear influencers and armchair psychiatrists/clinicians online dabble in the business of self-diagnosis because they are often taking bad behaviors and attributing it to a group that’s already heavily stigmatized. It’s not lost on me in her self-diagnosing, Amanda went to the more appealing “high functioning” part of the ASD spectrum versus say calling herself the less sexy “sociopath” or “borderline personality disorder.” And this is why self-diagnosis is a slippery slope. People want something to blame for their troubles and to wrap their bad behavior up with a nice bow. But, rarely are they willing to a) do the inner work and correct the problem if it lies with them and b) accept the unappealing parts of treatment that don’t make them look good.
Lastly, what Amanda is doing spreading by misinformation of a $10K fee is the same thing the articles written about her said, which is she rarely wants to be wrong and finds any and every excuse for the lies she tells. Even a person who shows signs of Autism or mental health issues is capable of taking accountability.

I am a mental health counselor & long time Amanda fan. Anyone can look up symptoms and self diagnose. That's one of the problems nowadays. Untrained ppl think they are Clinicians. I went through years of schooling, hours of training, licensing, learning the DSM, & continuous workshops to have the ability to diagnose. It isn't something you can ascribe to yourself because you feel you have what you read. There are many criteria that a trained professional can distinguish that a layman can't. Yes, the DSM is still evolving as the profession uncovers more about the brain & human behavior, but we are trained individuals none the less.
Gathering information & insight into oneself to gain some understanding & relief is welcomed. But Amanda not labeling that she was "self" diagnosed undermines my profession. You can't claim being diagnosed when you aren't skilled or trained to do so. That's like saying I was diagnosed with Cancer & you have never been to the doctor. Like what the what???? 😮

Also wondering where Shannon even got the info that led up to asking about her autism. Then she later admits she’s self diagnosed. Diagnoses are given by a clinical specialists and it can be harmful to assume you have something when it might be something completely different. It’s best to seek an expert so you can find ways to treat and manage the concern. It’s not fair to blame Shannon when you were not honest with the response and now feel victimized. There are many valid reasons that people DO NOT get an autism diagnosis. I am diagnosed as autistic and within the autistic community there is much support for those without a diagnosis. It is and should be personal choice, but it’s important to understand why people DO NOT want a diagnosis.
      1. Recent studies have found that over half of people diagnosed autistic who disclosed their diagnosis to an employer report that things actually became worse for them, not better. This included discrimination, ostracism and ableism.
      2. Money is a big factor when accessing a diagnosis, those not in the position to access a diagnosis should not miss out on support.
      3. Autism assessments are very sexist, with assessors excluding women for wearing make up or having a boyfriend, or not being obsessed with traditionally autistic stereotypical interests like trains and history.
      4. Autism evaluations are racist, noting that black autistic people are often misdiagnosed as being defiant or borderline, often ignoring sensory difficulties or social differences.
      5. Eugenics is a huge one, during the height of the pandemic in the UK autistic people received an automatic Do Not Resuscitate Order. This meant if a diagnosed autistic person became unwell we would not be treated as a non autistic would. Effectively saying that our lives were less worth saving than non autistic people. This was a government policy, we are deemed less then. Studies have found that autistic people are often given less support when facing serious medical difficulties because we are considered less than.
      6. Autistic parents, or families with autistic children, are often targeted by government agencies, for example being overly policed and more often having their families investigated and children removed from their care.
      7. Ableism is huge, people underestimate you or treat as less than or different. This goes from systemic issues all the way to employers and family and friends.
      8. There are many things that having an autism diagnosis stops you from doing, for example, if autistic Australia will not let you emigrate there. A UK professional recently had his application rejected to move there for his work due to having an autistic son. Your options become more limited.
      9. Studies have been done that show when autistic people advised on their job application of their diagnosis, even with the exact same information, they were less likely to be given an interview for the job.
Whilst a diagnosis should provide you with more protections and opportunities in reality that is not the case. Also, the support and adjustments made for autistic people should be available to ALL PEOPLE. As many people may never consider themselves autistic and therefore never pursue a diagnosis. It also relies on children having parents and families that will have the knowledge, time, energy and perhaps finances to pursue a diagnosis.
If you want to know more I recommend following @drdevonprice, @neurodivergent_lou or @livedexperienceeducator, @neurowild_, @nigh.functioning.autism

Their book is good but there is a section of DBT that's missing in their book that would actually have been more helpful if included. ND Lou and Nigh Functioning are prolly the best accounts you listed. Some of the reasons you listed apply mostly to Autistic people with very substantial support needs **.
Money isn't an issue but for Amanda as she's a SAG member and if she went to get assessed she'd have it covered by their health insurance. Self-diagnosis on its own can be dangerous (the initial comment points out why). That's just step 1 and it should be done responsibly. It's important to work with a trained, qualified clinician to figure out what services and supports are needed.
The evaluation, the assessment and/or Autism criteria aren't sexist or racist. Some of the clinicians providing them are.
** Severity is based on social communication impairments and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior. For either criterion, severity is described in 3 levels: Level 3 - requires very substantial support, Level 2 - Requires substantial support, and Level 1 - requires support.

@@beingauthentic1234 As an autistic, I understand these points, especially being a black woman myself. However stating that you are formally diagnosed and not being diagnosed by a clinician is dangerous for those who are autistic and decide not to get a formal diagnosis because despite the drawbacks, you can get special accommodations, get necessary resources and properly approach therapy. There are so many symptoms of autism that could be something else and not be autism at all.

However, my point is that some people cannot get a diagnosis, and that others do not pursue a diagnosis because it can be harmful and have negative consequences. So much recent research points to this, for example, a recent study that shows doctors work less on seriously injured or unwell patients if they are autistic which results in poor outcomes or even death. Or another study which showed results of over half of diagnosed autistic people reporting negative outcomes after disclosing their diagnosis to an employer and regretted doing so. As I said, you are welcome to your opinions.

Fortunately, through my therapist, I was able to get in touch with a program that offers an evaluation for him through medicaid. YAI... still waiting to schedule an appointment. I have been dealing with this since he was 2, and now he is about to be 8.
Most insurance does not cover the evaluation. I had insurance and had to get off it to get medicaid for the YAI program which I only found out about when I had to get a therapist because I was having a rough time navigating my sons behavior.
What saddens me is that I as a parent , see my son and knows what he struggles with and having been told through various channels that he is but because there is yet to be a clinic, people roll their eyes.

I’m a black clinician and mental health is honestly one of the fields where there are a variety of black providers. In addition, a lot of black clients request to work specifically with black providers. Self-diagnosing is not helpful because there are a lot of symptoms that appear in other mental disorders, mimicking similarities. It is also important to take in consideration all the factors that may contribute to the person’s symptoms…..including ruling out any medical or substance use history that can change behaviors. Without that knowledge, it can lead people down a rabbit hole of convincing themselves that they may have one specific disorder. In addition, diagnosing comes from what the person is reporting as symptoms. This is not to say that Amanda may/may not have Autism, it’s just not helpful to self-diagnose without the full understanding of recognizing what criteria classifies as certain disorders.

Iyanla said it best: Your delivery can diminish your message. So If she is doing the work, especially as a black woman like me, and wants to be understood and heard, you have to make it palatable. Even if someone comes at Amanda in the wrong tone, she will focus on that and not the message. It’s something we all need to learn as humans. I also say te: the autism diagnosis, she knows what traits resonate with her; who am I to speak on it. However clinicians are the ones who came up with the spectrum …so relying on them to diagnose you is kinda the way to go if that is what you are relying your self diagnosis on. If not, why rely in any of their studies only when it suits you. That can be a dangerous road to tread. Its kinda speaking in circles. However l, it’s her body and health and she knows what is best for her. All in all, she does lack accountability to a huge degree we all do to some degreee, but I like her more than not.

I think it's hilarious how Amanda Seales ruined her own redemption in the eyes of the public less than 12 hrs after her interview dropped; and she did it HERSELF 😂
Mo'Nique did the same thing, but at least it took like a week or so. Basically, you have a poloraizing figure go onto Club Shay Shay to speak their truth. From there, most of the people who didn't like that particular person begins to change their stances. However, that person's true colors come on contradicting the persona they had during the viral interview and the public turns on them again.
In Mo'Nique's case, the facade was shattered once the drama with her son became the public topic of discussion. In Amanda's case, any good will that people had for her went out the window due to her lie of omission regarding her 'diagnosis.'

People are prone to bias which is why it's important to get an outside professional to validate a diagnosis. Ideally everyone would have access to required care and supports but that's not the case. Amanda has access yet chooses not to utilize it. That's irresponsible. Especially for someone with a following as big as hers.

@@UnpopularCharisma you didn't just call me allistic 😭 I was clinically diagnosed with ADHD like 20+ years ago which precluded an Autism diagnosis so I had to wait until after 2013 when the DSM-5 allowed for co-occurring ADHD and ASD diagnoses. Eventually I was clinically diagnosed with Autism (Level 2 - requires substantial support) years after that. I am not against informed self-diagnosis at all so idk where in my comment led to that conclusion. The Autistic community you mentioned exists both online and offline. You'll never know what the consensus is for those who are offline unless you interact with them. Some of them are too busy tryna learn sign language or access effective accessibility tools like AAC to be concerned about self-diagnosis. I actually agree that Amanda shouldn't have said anything unless she was willing to disclose she was self-diagnosed.
While I nor anyone else owe others an explanation here goes a snippet: I have always struggled with speech and still do, I prefer text & before that writing, I used to have harmful stims that led some people to believe I was possessed, my thermoregulation is so off I have no idea how to dress for what my body temps will be like, there are times I've disrupted quiet spaces bc I was so cold that my teeth chattered uncontrollably, I have to shower sitting in a chair bc without it I could hurt myself, I have to have premade food bc cooking is dangerous for me, I have to wear ear defenders in public even if they cause me a bit of pain bc the pain that comes with high volumes hurt way more, I don't like the earbuds as they don't feel right, I watch everything with CCs on so I can process, I have passed out in public due to certain vitamins in my body dropping for reasons unbeknownst to me, my life is not made easier due to being AuDHD (Autistic with ADHD) so it's incredibly hurtful that you'd make an assumption in the way you did just bc my vast understanding of autism doesn't match the social model so often parroted. I know what autism is to me and I understand it's different for every Autistic person but for you to go around makin' the assumptions you have is not okay. Please be better about it in the future.
Also, who said Autism was a disease? Certainly not me! I'm pretty adamant about it not being referred to as a disease. Yes, it's a neurotype but it is also a disorder. I know people have their issues with that word (disorder) but autism DOES impair life in one way or another otherwise why even self-identify in the first place?
ABA is not the only treatment for Autism. Speech therapy, DBT, physical therapy, and some others I'm forgetting atm are other treatments. Also, all ABA is not training Autistics to be "normal people" . I used to believe the same thing but that way of treatment was more heavily applied in the past. Yes, there are still some practitioners who still go by the old practices (highly problematic) but there are some improvements in ABA. Like it's helpful for Autistic folks who have self-harmful stims like headbanging to receive ABA. The old practices were to do 40 hours of ABA per week but now it's more like 10 hours. No need to turn it into a full-time job.
Anyhoo, again I don't have an issue with informed self-diagnosis. My issue in this particular situation is that instead of stating, "I recently self-diagnosed my Autism" she chose not to disclose the self-diagnosed part until later. All that she said in her IG live could've been similarly stated in the podcast interview. There was a real missed opportunity to discuss aspects of what goes into informed self-diagnosis, the barriers to clinical diagnosis, the stigma still attached to autism, etc but NOPE. AND during Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month no less.
It's funny how I supposedly don't know what autism is tho. For such a comment to come from another Black woman really stings.

Why is she the only person who can educate or inform? The truth seems to be her version in every situation.
Also, I can't listen to 3 hours of her. She needs intense therapy instead of bleeding all over people. God bless those who support her. You've found your tribe.
As brilliant as she proclaims herself to be. She should have created space where she is the boss and creating spaces for other long ago.

She said exactly this is the interview. The truth and her truth are usually the same. She does no wrong in her eyes, which is problematic.

@_Ridethemaverick I have found in life that if I am occupied taking my own inventory, that keeps me busy.

She lost me after that autism diagnosis talk. I knew from when she said it she was lying. My son has autism and even though it is a spectrum, I know she was not affected by it the way she claim. I see my son and other at his ABA therapy session and his school. That’s not anything to play around with.

@@Locdluuvthat’s why I said it’s a spectrum and I highlighted the others with it at his ABA therapy session. by the way it doesn’t cost 10,000 dollars you just have to go to a psychiatrist and ask them to do it, on the internet y’all be so quick to respond to someone without fact checking or understanding what someone is saying.

@@HiTechHeadthe parroting that's done online is frustrating and for me dysregulating at times.
$10K is maybe what a private clinician charges but even that's an exaggeration.

She’s an adult. Not a child seeking a diagnosis. It’s actually difficult to find someone willing to diagnose and treat an adult. And yes, apparently expensive? Lots of autistic adults in the comments talking about it. You should check it out. Learned a lot

Day one of medical school we are taught not to self diagnose. And these are the literal experts we’re talking about. You can say you think you have it but that’s about it. And it doesn’t cost $10,000 to get evaluated.
