I live in Northern VA and used to go see these guys in the late 80s and early 90s at the Birchmere. These guys were bluegrass perfection as far as harmonies go. Mike Auldridge on dobro, John Starling, Ben Eldridge amd Tom Gray…almost brings a tear to my eye watching in 2022.
i can't listen to this song by the scene without getting a lump in my throat. i sure miss John Duffey, Mike Auldridge and so many other great musicians who have passed on. as you listen to your old favorite's from the past, it can sometime put you in a blue mood. may they all RIP.
The Seldom Scene was my favorite bluegrass group, and this is my very favorite of their songs. Duffy, with his magnificent mullet, was a stocky man who curled around his mandolin until it became a part of him. His playing was brilliant and his high tenor voice was beautiful and unexpected. Mike Auldredge, with his gorgeous wavy silver hair, made me weep when his dobro soared above the others, and this song is a good example of that.
This takes me way, way back. For me the journey started @ the Red Fox Inn in Bethesda MD. Now it's probably a parking garage or the foundation of a highrise; but back then, the early 70's it was a Bluegrass club & if you went there you went to *listen*. For us it was "The Country Gentlemen" on Thursday nights. Then one Thursday the Gentlemen didn't show up, it was these "Seldom Scene" guys, we had no idea who they were but the waitress told us to stick around, it would be worth it. It was. It really was. "Wait a Minute", "Rider", a few more gems & we had a new favorite band! Then one Thursday the "Scene" didn't show up, it was a new band, "Hickory Wind". Again we were about to leave but again the waitress assured us it'd be worth our while to stick around, and once again we did. Sure enough, by the end of the 1st set of "Appalachian Gypsy music" newgrass more than bluegrass, string band music flavored with jazz and country western, these guys *listened* to one another! Virtuosos, their picking seemed effortless, the instruments were played in ensemble fashion. Each instrument blended with and complemented the others. With the right kind of ears when Hickory Wind were ON, you could pick up hints of the Old World roots of bluegrass, Reels, hornpipes, the gypsy string sounds. Yes you guessed it, we had a new, new favorite band. They put out 3 or maybe 4 albums, I only have 3. I wonder what happened to Sam Morgan, Bob Shank, Pete Tenney, Glen McCarthy, Mark Walbridge? I hope they're still playing ... I don't mean any of this to detract from The Seldom Scene, as if anything could. No, just call it an old guy reminiscing.
Mr. Gray, you are one of the greatest bass players to ever walk the earth. I would pay millions to see you with the original lineup of The Seldom Scene. I appreciate all of your involvement in bluegrass.
As i have said prior, These boys will live forever. They will always be in the minds of us as long as we live, I am 77 yrs young and i listen to them all the time. Thank all of those that made bluegrass music what it is today.
Tom Gray... thank you for all the memorable nights at the Birchmere. Seeing John, Ben, Mike, Phil and you weekly was a treasure. This song was always a special time in the show. John Starling was always great to see also.
Just a guess on my part but was it your Father (or perhaps your Grandfather ?) who Mike spoke of when describing the man who first got him involved in music ? Mike was a treasured friend and, in my opinion, the greatest Dobro player the world has ever known. You were right when you called him "a sweet guy" unless you got him to talking about politics. I still treasure our ancient conversations. It used to bother me when he referred to himself as a "Short Timer" but here I am at 67 and I begin to understand more and more.
One of the VERY BEST Bluegrass bands that ever existed playing one of the most beautiful Bluegrass songs ever written. John, you were such a good guy. I agree w/ Jim Epp in that you ARE sorely missed by so many of us who loved your style. It was a pleasure knowing you
A follower of Seldom Scene since I first heard them in 1974 and couldn’t wait to purchase their LP ‘ Old Train ‘. What a delight it still is and an enthusiastic listener to their music and Bluegrass ever since. Thank you Seldom Scene and God Bless.
Oh, God. Tears! The angels are singing. Herb Pederson wrote this gem. John Duffey is incredible. He channels Bill Monroe. But there is nobody like him. Holy Cow. Check out the line up now as well. They are amazing. One suggestion. Like Tony Rice, I think that they should do a whole album of Gordon Lightfoot songs. Thanks for posting!
Thank you for your contribution the world of music! I'm ever grateful for the chance to see you again, so a very big thanks to youtube too! It was, and remains forever as real, "Feel good music", for sure!!
Will never forget all the times I saw them do this at the old Birchmere in Alexandria, VA back in the late 70's. they played every Thursday night.I don't think this crowd was ready for Duffy' sense of humor!
Thanks Tom for posting this great tune . One of my all time fav Scene songs. I think I have just about all your albums and am pretty sure I was in the audience for this Tommy Hunter broadcast. Tommy Hunter was and is a great Bluegrass music fan. Remember the years you guys appeared at the Bluegrass Canada Festival at Carlisle , Ontario? I still have a few photos from the 1976 Festival. Keep well. Sorry to just see hear about Mike's passing. You guys have so many fans up here in Canada.
Merci d'un petit français pour ce moment de bonheur. et surtout un grand merci a ce groupe de blugrass pour ses 5:40 qui ont arrêté le temps Quel est l'album ou je peux trouver ce morceau.. ?
I just saw you Saturday night play with Randy Waller in Lucketts. Thanks ! The Kirk that was playing the bass gave you a great compliment.........said I'm playing the bass and Tom Gray is in the audience , something is wrong with this picture. He did fine ...... as did you.
I'm 70 years old.I still remember buying Seldom Scene vol. One as a 19 y.o.
Loved you then guys, love you now and always.
I loved the early Seldom Scene. Nobody can beat Auldridge on dobro and Duffy on tenor and high lead vocals

I’ve heard a few different versions and this is one of my favorites
I can listen to Duffy's tenor on this song forever.

Every vocal and instrumental element offers something magical to this song; listening to it this time, it's the bass line. Oh my it's amazing!
Tom Gray's bass holds it all together....so sweet....I keep coming back to this tune.
I'm here because we heard Mr. Tom Gray sit in with Darin & Brooke Aldridge tonight at the Drum & Strum Warrenton VA 💙
Rips your heart out. Such a great song. Beautiful
Still watching. this tune and John Duffey never gets old!
We sure miss you, John Duffy.
The dobro in this version along with the harmonies is nothing short of heart wrenching...

Yes, "perfection" is the only apt adjective that can be used to describe their performance.
Still the Best!
Very few groups could match that harmony!
