This cover goes out to Sean Sammon who, in one fell swoop, managed to -
- Sell me this bass.
- Get me to leave my room on a weekend and hop a plane to Florida.
- Restore my faith in the kindness and generosity of people.
For these things and more, I thank you Sean.
I've wanted a Wal bass for a very long time. Since 1985 to be exact, when I learned it was the bass Geddy used to record the Power Windows album. At the time, I’d never heard another bass sound quite like that, so clean, twangy, and focused. It wasn’t until 1991 when my wife, Lynn, and I were married, that I’d have the opportunity to play (and perhaps purchase) one. The only store in the country that happened to actually stock a few of them was the Bass Centre in Los Angeles, Ca. and, as fate would have it, we just so happened to be traversing the California coast on our honeymoon. I went into the store with a signed permission slip to buy one - A Black MK1 with Gold Hardware, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. I was so tethered to my $300 Ibanez Roadstar II and it’s crude, homemade ramp system that the Wal just seemed to take too much effort to play. We even visited the store again on our way back up the coast, just to make sure, and I, once again, left the store empty handed. Fast forward 25 years and the fever hit again…hard. Over the past year and a half I went on a nostalgic collecting binge, acquiring some of the basses I owned as a young player (the ones I liked anyway) as well as a few basses I’d just always wanted to own. It's been a great experience and, fortunately for me, my tastes in instruments were never terribly extravagant. The Wal was never supposed to be on that list of “basses I’d just always wanted” as I’ve always had strong feelings with regard to what the maximum amount I would pay for an instrument would be and the Wal well exceeded that number. Nevertheless, in a fever state, I sat down with Lynn and said that I needed to speak to her about something, to which she responded, “We’re getting a Wal, aren’t we?” I then assured her (once again) that this bass would be the last one.
Edit:
(It seems that my story was longer than the space RUclips allows for such things, so I had to cut out the whole description of my trip. I just left these two portions of the yarn because these sentiments are more important than the details. I may just do a video telling the tale or post the story elsewhere for anyone who might be interested. Suffice it to say, there were a lot of things that could have gone wrong but none did. It took me completely and utterly out of my comfort zone. And, most importantly, at no time was I duct taped to a chair. I fill in some of the details on this video - • Mayor of Simpleton Bas... )
Sean Sammon, who sold me the bass, is the former bassist and founding member of the band, "Puddle of Mudd".
I came away with a few things from this experience aside from an incredible bass. For one, I learned that I could travel unchaperoned and manage to not screw up too badly. I also learned that, sometimes, when something seems to good to be true, it can be both - good and true. And finally, I learned that there are still people out there who follow their heart and to whom profit and financial gain are not primary motivations as evidenced in, not only Sean’s actions, but in something he wrote on my Facebook page which pretty much summed up the whole experience, "She looks good Troy. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I did. Its not always about the cash. It's a vibe thing. You are spot on...It is a rare thing these days. Think about it...its better to make a friend then make a little more cash and no appreciation for the bass. So I do expect new Red Barchetta video. Don't be a stranger. Talk to ya later."
I really do love the bass, but I will always treasure experience I had getting it.
If you’ve made it this far, please continue reading just a little further…Sean Sammon is currently working with the Emma Moseley Band and if you would check them out and show them a little love I would be grateful.

Of course, the song is "The Big Money" off of Rush's "Power Window" album which came out in 1985.
Just think...Geddy is SINGING and playing this bass line simultaneously. Wow! Talk about multi-tasking.
I think I have OCD because since June I have been going into my garage and playing this song along with track one on ASOH again and again - I can see how many takes each night bc they record as MKV and show time (60-80 times a night maybe) - Not bass and singing but alex's guitar/vocals (mixed voice) note for note - Geddy not only plays this effortlessly, but he wrote the music (with alex whoever did what on this I have no idea). I am trying to paint by numbers just one track and in that time they probably recorded Hold Your Fire. Singing and playing this is easily possible, singing good and playing is hardly possible, and singing/playing/knowing you wrote the song out of thin air makes Rush Rush and me some D-Bag on RUclips pouring my heart out over a year old comment.
And playing synths when the solo begins
@@AmadeusRFL While playing moog taurus bass pedals.
singing, while jamming on bass,AND playing keys with his feet... geddy ain't human
RUSH has been my favorite band for decades. For many of the reasons you all point out
The pure speed of this bass line, combined with the fact that geddy sings at the same time simply blows my mind.
I love Power Windows, it's one their best produced albums with a lot great songs.
Me too... totally agree!
it seems to me, you cant really fully apreciated geddy lees playing until you watch one of your vids
roman14032 or try and play these lines yourself
Eeeeeeexactly
I don't even play bass but I find myself coming to his videos for years now whenever I get a good rush buzz on and think to myself "this is why I should buy a bass" - his audio mix is perfect which really makes watching them have replay value to boot
I totally agree!!
Someone would need to be deaf to not realize Geddy is a world class musician.
Geddy plays this ridiculously awesome bass line while singing, live too! none better.
AND synth pedals too. Check this video...something to behold (Geddy: Double-neck bass/guitar, vocals, synths/pedals. Alex: Double-neck guitar/synth pedals. Neil: Drums.percussion...they're like 6 people on stage!!)... ruclips.net/video/VuHS-gjMiVw/видео.html
Amazing player:):)
@@johnclements6408 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Geddy said that his work on Big Money is probably his best.
I would have to agree with him on that.
My drummer says to me "Man you play alot of Octaves" Ged builds alot of his patterns or runs off Octaves. Big Money is the song that caught my attention back in 85 at 14. Excellent job!
Nothing wrong with octaves. Thanks.
"caught my attention back in 85 at 14." I had the same exact experience!!!!!
I always knew Geddy was amazing but to watch covers of his creations really hits it home. Thanks!
Thanks!
Jesus Christ the tone is spot on, that is an incredible instrument
Blaspheming Jesus doesn't help you.
@@oreally8605 but it helped this channels comment section at least!
@@MistinIndia it's blasphemy sir. I know you're a rush fan, and Neil is akin to atheism but in the end you may regret it.
@Shallex sorry Sir, I do. And you can too.
@Shallex "No one is blinder than he, who will not see." Maybe this will help gotquestions.org
This song and this whole album will forever remind me of summer time, camping, beer drinking outdoor summer fun!
Awesome! Sounds like a great time.
It just amazes me how Geddy Lee comes up with these bass lines...just out of this world! Great job on this video. I really appreciate it.
Me too! Thanks!
Cant imagine how did Geddy Lee does this and sing at the same time ...
You and me both.
KILLER my fav geddy bassline , cheers to the greatest band of all time
Awesome! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Another overwhelming bass-line by Geddy, Troy.
Truth.
One of the Geddy's greatest bass lines!!
I agree!
You now look at peace brother with your ultimate bass..
That's how it feels.
kudos one of Geddy's most insane bass lines
Thanks!
THIS IS THE COOLEST FUCKIN COVER I'VE EVER SEEN,, with the bass MAGNIFIED over the other tracks... PHENOMENAL BASS PLAYING...
Thanks.
Troy. A thousand thumbs up. I stumbled across your videos on my fifty first birthday. One year to the day after you posted your first video. Thanks for the totally rocking gift.
Aw, thanks for the nice comment.
Just a little note. I'm 55.
Whenever I need to show people who are new to Rush how good Geddy is, I always come to TJH's channel and just start spamming them with videos haha.
Very well played!
Haha... please send them my apologies. Thanks and take care.
THat´s what I´m talking ´bout !!!!
Awesome bass playing... difficult to learn... wonderful to hear !!!
Congrats !
Thanks a lot.
I'm speechless, frankly. Not only a great instrument, but an even better story to go with it. Congrats, Troy! And as usual, great playing!
Thank you very much.
a cinderella story on a tumble of the dice :D
Bloody marvellous!!
Thank you!
I can tell by the way you rocked this one you loved Rush still even when they got into their early to mid 80's sound, one of the coolest transitions and eras for theband
i think Power Windows was one of their best
Yeah, one of my favorite songs off of my favorite album.
@@TJH3113 what kind of bass guitar is that? And how much does it go for? By the way I love all your videos!
Brian1967 Brian , it is a Wal bass. In most cases, they are made to order in England (2+ year wait) and are pretty pricey... even for a used one.
Congrats on the Wal man! If anyone deserves one, it's you.
Thanks, that was nice of you to say.
That part at 3:11-3:12: just beautiful!
I can’t imagine how much that Wal set you back, but they have the best bass tone I’ve heard. Your playing is amazing; I’ll never be able to play like that. I now have more respect for Geddy than I already had, because that line is busy as hell!
Actually, Sean Sammon sold it to me for far less than he could have gotten and I sold it back to him for around the same, as was our agreement from the start. I recouped a portion of my travel expenses when I sold it back to him. They are cool basses, but I don't think they've ever been worth what the price they were being sold for, even back in '91 when they went for $3,000 new.
I'm sure Power Windows wouldn't rank in my Top 3 Rush albums if not for the wonderful and rich sounds of that bass... dear god it's good. Sure, Alex and Neil's playing and sound were top notch on the album too, but Geddy's bass playing never sounded so vibrant and alive outside of Power Windows, such an underrated album.
I agree.
This sounds just like the record, I'm happy for you!
It does sound very similar, doesn't it. Thanks.
ruclips.net/video/h-ERSOfWzNs/видео.html
I think it's fair to say I'm obsessed with the bass in this song. Just so... funky and perfect for the late 1980's.
Yeah, it's one of my favorites as well.
Oh my, this guy shreds!!!
Thanks!
Please do more covers of Power Windows with this amazing instrument! The sound is wonderful. Great job!
I am overwhelmed by your talent 😂
You're too kind. Thank you Robert.
Finally got a Wal!!!! That's awesome!!!!
And for only half my soul. Thanks.
Certainly one of Geddy's more kinetic lines, wonderfully -- and accurately -- reproduced here in full glorious Wal-ness. One of your best videos yet, Troy! Thanks for posting.
I agree and thank you.
Geddy got funky in this jam. Tight and Twangy. Power Windows tape got worn out in the 80's forward!! I love the bridge in this song. Very dreamy. Amazing cover as usual Troy! If Geddy ever needed a fill-in, you'd fit the bill and be in the front of the line!
Yeah, he did. I'll never forget the first time I heard it. Thanks a lot.
Wow, the tone off that bass is unbelievable! Excellent playing, sir!
Yes, it has a very strong, unique voice.
All right man. Perfect bass track of this classic RUSH tune. Incredible how Lee can play and sing this song. Marathon is another amazing bass and vocal work. Congratulation man.
BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!!
I really like the accurate tempo speedy and snappy high ghost notes. Thank you for your work being accurate in note choices to originals!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Great Job! Brings back my college years!
And that's a story most players can relate to as well!
Even though I know Geddy has almost exclusively played his Fender Jazz Basses on stage for this song and so many others for years, this song really needs the Wal to sound just so. Good on you for getting one.
I agree 100%. Yeah, it was a cool bass, but it came and went.
@@TJH3113 Wait you sold the Wal??
Listening to Power Windows and wondered if anyone on RUclips could get even close to Geddy. Watched a few that were really good, but this is the only one where he totally nails the feel and tone. Amazing job!
Thanks a lot.
The other day The Body Electric came up on my iphone while on shuffle and I thought about you. I was going to request that you play it (I didn't realize you had covered it years ago) and then I saw this and it did so much more than satisfy that itch. This is the most amazing cover I've ever seen or heard and it's very personal to me. I can't get enough of it. I remember the first time i heard this song was on MTV and I was captivated by Geddy's bass playing. Thanks Troy! You're amazing!
Wow, very nice of you to say. Thanks a lot.
By the way, it's me, Dan Shimmyo. I wasn't sure if you knew me by my youtube account name. Plus I have 3 accounts... I've watched this video like 4 times and I want more!
Man, I love your playing and the stories you share with each video.
Thanks for all the entertainment and inspiration
My pleasure! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
What an amazing sound off that bass...really punchy!!.....its like listening to Ged's bass in isolation its that good!!
Yes, they have a very distinctive sound to them. Thanks!
AWESOME
Thanks Eduardo!
That tone. it just nails it!
It really does, doesn't it?
That's a great story. Your Wal is clearly in good hands.
Thanks, I hope you enjoyed it.
Dude, your bass playing is incredible. So crisp and precise.
Thanks so much Dixie.
my Gosh Troy phenomenal performance.
Thank you.
Big Money was my least favorite on Power Windows for a long time, but in the last short while its become one of my favorite Rush songs, period. Funny how it sometimes takes the 100th listen for it to finally click. Thanks for sharing this Wal version, Troy!
It's always been one of my favorites, but we all have our favorites, don't we?
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I'm Speechless! Unbelievable playing.
backshop1 Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard..
What a tone awesome
I’m glad you liked it, thanks James.
Incredible! I yelled "whoaaa" at least 10 times. And that bass is also incredible, that must be your jewel. You truly rock, Troy!
Cool. Yeah, it's pretty exciting here right now. I'm very pleased with the way it plays and sounds. Not many things in life live up to expectations, let alone exceed them. Thanks a lot.
Man, you really make it look so damn easy to play! You really do love Rush & Geddy Lee as a bassist. Geddy is becoming 1 of my favorite bassist of all time. I love Jaco, Boosty, Entwhistle & Jack Bruce & others but Geddy was or is extremely special as a bassist. Truly 1 of a kind!
Thanks so much! Yes, Geddy was my oldest and longest influence on the bass.
Dang that bass sounds great. I'm a big fan of jazz bass tone but this bass sounds great. Geddy would like it too.
Great Story, Great Cover. Great Bass.
Thanks, thanks, thanks.
That was just awesome Troy. Great playing - I love the crispness of the notes, would love to be that precise with my playing - and the Wal is a thing of beauty :)
Thanks a lot.
Wow... Superb playing!!! Geddy is IMHO the best performance musician ever.
Thank you! I agree.
Thank you for all of the time and effort that you have put into your playing.Geddy is one of those players that has really propelled the art of bass playing. My biggest influence is James Jamerson from the Motown studio band The Funk Brothers, I have found that studying the technique of players such as Geddy, James, and T-bone Wolk will dramatically increase a players skill level rather quickly. Thanks for sharing your skill with the bass players of the world, I can only hope that the young cats of today won't solely rely on watching to learn a complex line, but will develop the ability to hear the line to interpret it as well. Thanks again for sharing your talent and for the wonderful tone! Best Wishes, DQ.............
Perfect!! Beautiful bass guitar you got there. And the mask wall .... Awesom video👍
Thanks a lot! Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
Awesome!!!! Congrats guy!!!
Thanks Rodrigo!!
Amazing story ! Amazing bass ! You really deserve it !
gotta love the sound of the Wal!!
I'm really enjoying it.
The best Rush bass cover,congratulations!
Haha, I'm glad you think so. Thank you very much.
OmG of the Olympus !!
Your choice of covers it's right on the money, you're amazing bro !
Thanks a lot!
Wow...major RUSH fan here...and Power Windows is in my Top 3. But this makes me appreciate this song a lot more and Ged (and you too) and his talent...wow...just wow...
Thanks a lot.
Sweet! Thank you so much for sharing, you are very good, sir
Thanks for watching.
Getting a Wal has been one of those that has eluded me for over thirty years. From the first time, much like yourself, in 1985, I've wanted one. Of course at the time, being in my teens, I would never have had the money...not that I really do now, but it's one of those that I could work some OT to obtain. The trouble now, I've never even seen one nor have I even heard of one coming up for sale in the Midwest. I supposed when it's the right time, It'll happen, but until then...
It was a dream come true when I got this one, but I only had it for a year or two. I certainly enjoyed my time spent with it, but it did not become one of my favorite basses and I got tired of stepping over it to pick up a different bass.
@@TJH3113 it's funny to read this as you're not the first to say that. Many talk about the weight of the Wal that really puts them off, and now with the sophisticated electronics, if one wishes for the sound, it's able to be done without having to drop $5g's.
I honestly believe this bass may have been my old Wal. I had this exact spec model (and I mean exact) from about 1998 to about 2007. I sold it to a guy in the UK in Wycombe, Bucks. And then ??? I always wondered if Wal bought it back to resell. What are the odds? Do you know the full history Troy?
I have tons of pics.of me with it.
Loving the Wal
Now that is a truly beautiful bass!!
Red is a bit flashy for my taste but it's still very nice.
Great story and killer bass... Saw Geddy play his during Hold Your Fire Tour.. Ah, memories....
Thank You!!
It was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@TJH3113 I love Rush! I’ve been a fan since Hemispheres I’m 57. The awesome thing of RUclips is finding isolated tracks and then live performances like your emphasizing a track.
I have a RUclips channel. I understand the value of someone watching my videos and making a comment.
Thanks again! I’ll look around for more stuff you’ve done
You play this so well with so much finesse! I love seeing someone cover Geddys stuff that can really cover Geddys stuff!
It really shows Geddys humble, and often overlooked genius talent !
Thanks a lot!
ive just been watching these all weekend - seems like i do that once a year - something about hearing the bass line to every rush song ever made - thanks for the dedication and catalog of work
I appreciate that you’re playing the period-accurate bass for this song. The Wal’s tonal range is just incredible and you make it really sing. As a teen listening to this album I wanted a Wal so badly…until I found out how much they cost. 😊
That was really the entire reason for getting this bass. After I covered most of the Wal-era Rush songs with it, I sort of fell out of love with the bass. The cost, I think, is a part of the reason that I moved on from it. I just don't think any instrument is worth that much. To each his own... I have a couple of basses that were quite expensive, but they were built especially for me by a person I highly respect and that makes them quite special to me.
@@TJH3113 You’ve got the skill to put an instrument like that to good use, and until Geddy does his own series, you’ve also got the authoritative series of Rush bass covers on RUclips. Still a sizable investment! I just checked prices and I don’t think either of my cars are worth as much as a Wal bass. I get along fine with my humble Yamaha, and really I’d need a lot more skill before anything fancier would make any sense.
I always thought the bass was incredible on this song!
That's because it is!
WAL & Geddy = awesome! :) Cool playing, great colour ;)
Truth! Thanks.
Ok man... I mean this when I say it. You are one of the best bass players of our time...
Oh jeez...thanks? I'm really just a halfway decent mimic is all.
@@TJH3113 haaa! Hardly.. that'd be what i do .. 😁🤘🎶
I have to add my congratulations to that of others.
I've wanted a Wal for around the same length of time as you did.
They really do have a sound all of their own: it's just so....woody.
On the one hand I'm deeply envious, but on the other, if anyone ought to have a Wal as nice as that one then it's you.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I yelled "he's got a feckin' Wal...woohoo!"
Perhaps the nicest part is that your long wait was finally brought to an end in such a nice way, with good memories associated with the instrument right from day one, which will be with you every time you play it.
Sincere congratulations mate.
Thank you. Everything you said was nice of you to say. If someone went through a bunch of back comments they'd be able to come up with many quotes of me saying, "Yes, I'd love a Wal, but I'll never have one because I think the cost is just too much to be spent on one instrument." My mind is a funny place and a switch got flipped or something and here I am. But, as you alluded to, for me, the story is bigger than the bass and that's something that money can't buy. I stuck upon a sentiment in an earlier response and I like it so much that I'll repeat it here - I think the story revealed as much about just how distrustful and cynical I am, as it did about how open and generous Sean was and I hope to use it as a catalyst to change my way of thinking a bit.
Thanks again for your comment and congratulations.
Congrats. Great story, great bass, great cover!
Thank you very much.
I'm glad you chose a bass line with subtlety and space to debut your new bass. Sounds like buttah!
Yes, I do believe there is a half note in there somewhere. Did you say "Buttah"? That's the code word! Send help!
Excellent cover as usual. Have always loved the Wal bass tone.
Thanks. Me too.
Amazing work, again. Great story too. I've loved Wal's from my love for Justin Chancellor from Tool. Amazing tone. I can't believe Geddy plays and sings this stuff... what a guy. Great work!
Thanks. I've never listened to much Tool but hear a lot of love for the bass player.
I always value the notes to your videos, and really want to thank you for past concise and informative covers of so many different bands and songs, and eagerly await whats to come. I love so much of what you do and what you've done that I went and got all the Crisis music I could find, and really draw from it as a musician but primarily as a bass player. I am so happy for you that you have come to own a Wal, especially one as stunning as in this video (its almost like Geddy's red one!) Moreover, to read and in a way live your journey to acquiring one, as a young Canadian growing up in the 90's and early 2000's listening to Sean Sammon on the radio with Puddle of Mudd (primarily the song "Blurry" which was in heavy rotation at the time,) but primarily soaking in all things Yes, Rush and Kiss (thanks to my incredible father) I look eagerly forward to the day when I come to own one too as it is my dream instrument! Although I myself do not own one I am a part of the Wal bass owner and appreciator community on Facebook and encourage you to join their page if you are on Facebook.
With much gratitude and respect,
Ben
Thank yo so much for the wonderful comment. I really do appreciate it. The group I joined was the "Wal Bass Owners of the World Unite"
It's right on. Good job!
Thanks Brutha! Very kind words. I hope you are happy with the Wal. You got it for all the right reasons. Keep Rockin. A great bass for a great player. Sounds great . It's a good one. Don't be a stranger.
Thanks Sean.
Never before now listened to this track. Two notes in- that's gotta be rush. Thanks g for doing this cover you rock!
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Oh my god!!! Wal!!!
Might be interesting to do a video where you discuss things such as what you talk about in the description and show all the basses you have. It would be interesting for me.
This was great, Troy. Great cover, great bass (GREAT tone!), great story. Thanks for sharing!
What a bassist man...even on songs that aren't Rush's most famous his bass lines are INCREDIBLE. You really do an awesome job capturing the spirit of Geddy's playing which I think is awesome, thanks for the cover as always!
Thanks.
I'm nailing this at 1.25x with the Wal Bass I just bought from Geddy. In other words, I'm slowing down your vid to learn the song on my 1984 Guild Pilot.
Whatever works! I no longer have the Wal, but I still do have my Pilot!
Zeronerve, I would say a Spector NS2A. I thought that was the closest I’d ever get to a Wal’s tone and character... until I got the Wal. As much as I enjoyed the Wal, there was something about the Spectors that I actually preferred. I no longer have the Wal and have 6 Spectors. NS2A’s can be found for between $700 and $900.
That is awesome. The sound is spot on!
Thanks. I think it is too.
Fantastic cover! And bass! ❤️
Thanks David!
Got that distinctive Power Windows Wal Bass sound (almost fretless sounding). I am going to put up two bass vids -- one Geddy, one not... okay - I am thinking about them now. I will write them down. Okay. Now I will see if you do them in the next month.
Great story, great cover!
Thanks a lot.
Well done. I was listening to Big Money and was wondering if anyone would attempt a bass cover. You did it, man!
Awesome, thank you!
