Rush - The Big Money bass and synths cover

- Hi everyone. Back with another Rush cover after quite some time! I had wanted to redo a better video/playthrough for 'The Big Money' from Power Windows, as it is probably my top Geddy bassline along with YYZ and I thought it would be fun to do some synth stuff for it too. This one took quite a lot of work and that's partly why it took so long for me to find enough time to get it all done until this past week. Hopefully it is worth the wait!
I have made several additions/changes to my rig since I last recorded a video, so this is the first cover featuring my Sansamp PSA-1, and my Neural DSP Quad Cortex which I added quite recently. Now that I am fairly settled on my setup, I will do a video soon going through how I use all my equipment together to get the different elements of my sound. Basically, this video is the PSA-1 for my distorted sound, the GED-2112 for a clean DI bass sound (with most of the low end) and my Trace Elliot for the higher slappy and twangy sounds all brought together in the Quad Cortex where I can tweak the various components with eq and compression etc.
The synth parts are all made and recorded with my Groovesynthesis 3rd Wave. That industrial 'ping' sound in the middle section was always a really interesting one to me, so I had a lot of fun making the patch for that one. It's also a great demonstration of how well the synth does virtual analog sounds with the brass parts of the intro! There are a couple more layers of synths I recorded but didn't film - mainly a lower level choir pad that I have going through the brass intro/outro sections, and some brass swells during the chords. I couldn't work out how to get the choir patch exactly how it sounds on Power Windows, but I think it ended up being quite a nice sound anyway so I was pleased with the result. I also didn't attempt doing my own versions of some of the sounds which Rush just sampled and triggered, just the parts that were more like 'traditional synth parts'. It was already a lot of work as it is :D
I recorded two angles for my bass playthrough to mix and match, but the lighting for the front on camera was quite poor and it didn't come out well. I decided to just use it as a mini cam in the corner and have them both running at once to save myself having to re-record everything again. I hope it's not annoying to have 2 videos going at the same time!
I have some recordings from my tribute bands first gig which I will upload as soon as I finish editing them, so expect those soon.
Hope you enjoy this one! A top 5 Rush song in my books

Just when I thought I couldn't love Geddy any more...
Yeah one of his best lines I think! Thanks for watching
Totally
Killer sound my friend!! Thank you for a new sharing!🎸
@@RickHardcore my pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Wow, just wow!. I've seen people actually write that Geddy is not that good. My God, it just that there are rarely any full length video showing his hands. What a masterpiece of bass playing. (Let alone singing while playing it).You performed this to perfection in not only the left hand but the right which is the secret sauce Geddy adds to his tone. Well done sir, well done.
Thanks for watching. Anyone who says Geddy is not that good doesn't see the bass in the same way as I do that's for sure. He is my favourite player and no one has ever got a tone that I find more exciting than Geddys, and no one writes bass parts like he does. I suspect I will be on a lifelong quest to get something approximating his Different Stages Jazz bass tones haha
I think it's time for a "Workin' Them Angels" cover... that would be insane
@@jakeb934 I was planning on doing driven next! I'll see what I'm feeling like doing when it comes to recording. I will note your suggestion though, its a good song
Please keep doing these covers... gives me so much more insight to how complex Geddys basslines are and how amazing this band is. Great playing Sir.
@wurger13 thanks! Plenty more coming ^^
Also loved how you incorporated slap and flamenco in there! I'm blown away
@Mattrino101 thanks! I really love geddys modern stuff so often use the live versions for my interpretation of the part
@@hemibass Keep up the good work, Geddy's work from Counterparts and on is some of my absolute favorite. love that flamenco
You play it with just your index finger and it's a perfect cover!Thank you!
@user-ig6im6qu9d thanks! Yeah that's my main finger for my right hand. Glad you liked my playing
It's such an aggressive bass line. Your tone is spot on. Well done and great video!
@@darinhelfend9523 thanks for watching!
The aggressive attack on that bass is truly impressive!!
@@linctexpilot8337 thanks! I hit the thing as hard as I can haha. Glad you liked it
probably my favorite rush song. As a fellow bass and key player, I say well done on this hard masterpiece of a song.
@@danielcorker992 thanks! Its a top one for me too. Amazing bassline
Wow that was amazing!! A very agressive bass sound and attack. You played it just like Geddy Lee. Your video was well put together. Please do more of these and thank you,
@@wilddrum78 thanks for watching! Glad you liked it. I have plenty more planned :)
a top three Rush song for me, you killed it!
One of my favs too. I think top 5 for sure. Thanks for watching
A routine for me: Hemibass uploads a new video. I click without a second thought.
@@drayiii980 haha thanks. I appreciate your support :) hope you continue to enjoy my stuff!
Amazing right hand attack. Many folks can play the notes, but that power is pretty unique. That Precision is crying for mercy by the end!
@@philminotti6870 haha thanks. My bass has taken a bit of a beating over the years. Seems to hold up though :) thanks for watching
Uh, that's a Jazz Bass?
You absolutley murdered that track!!!I love this song so much, especially the bass. I got into Rush a couple years ago, and they're my favorite band by a longshot now. Love this entire album, its underrated in my opinion. Take care 😁🤘
@@nedmac624 thanks! I put power windows top of my rankings with moving pictures. Its a total masterpiece. Glad you liked the video
You are truly blessed with talent!!! Unreal Sir.
@disingermetalwerks7975 thanks, very kind of you. Glad you liked it
Good God! I played a Rick 4001 in a Rush cover band in the 80's and I was pretty good, but your smoking hot, like others have said: the strength and attack is off the charts!
@@TheRealThomasPaine1776 thanks! The approval of another bass player who plays rush is always a great thing to hear :) glad you liked it
And to think Geddy is singing while playing these bass parts.
Yeah. Especially this song! It's such a busy bass part. Thanks for watching
Just .. Wow
Thanks :D Glad you liked it
Absolutely Amazing, Quintessential Magic!
@@npeart1 thanks so much!
Man, you nailed another one!
@@tmb3131 thanks. This is certainly on of my favourites and one I play a lot
Geddy Lee é um gênio!
If that translates to 'Geddy Lee is a genius' then yes, I agree :D
That's incredible! Amazing bass playing buddy!
Thanks!
very nice with the new camera angle, how was your first gig?
@@Ikkipepsi cheers! I'm planning on investing in a decent camera phone so hopefully can record a couple of good angles for future stuff. Gig was really fun thanks! I look forward to sharing some of the videos when they are done
Wow!!! I truly envy you.

Damn that was tight! Very solid bro. And that tone is spot on.
@@erichholler3466 thanks! Much appreciated
Killer cover!
@@ultimatebasses thanks! Glad you liked it
Killer playing!!...I wonder do you recoil from the thought of arthritis and other hand ailments creeping into your playing? I know Ged talking about the tendons in his plucking fingers acting up. You're still a young chap anyway. Thanks for your videos man.
@@_stardust62 thanks! I don't really think about that. I guess it might happen one day, but it might happen even if I played softly. I just try and get a sound I like and if its unsustainable for the long term, I'll adapt when I start getting pain I guess haha
Unreal dude..
Thanks for watching! Got more planned soon so stay tuned :)
Love it! Great song! Well done,
I just put a preamp in my jazz bass-LusitHand double NFP jazzplate. It is a low pass filter for bass-which happens to be what is also in a Wal bass. It isn’t exact because I don’t have those humbuckers-but it sounds great. Gives great sound like on the wal albums. Good job though! As always, nice attack on those strings!
Thanks! That sounds interesting. How close can you get it to that 80s Wal tone? I kind of try and combine my favourite features from both sounds with my tone. I like the punchy response of the wal but I want the distortion and grit of Geddy's later Jazz tones. I have Tom Brantley rewinds in this bass and they sound awesome
@@hemibass I feel pretty confident in how it sounds, at least in my late 70s jazz lawsuit bass. It has a filter per pickup, and that bridge pickup filter gives a very clanky sound-with a LOT of treble. The neck pickup filter can give you an insane amount of low end. Like my earbuds are rattling amount of low end. I’ve gotten a funky rickenbacker tone too tbh. It’s super versatile. If you mix and match each filter with each pickup dialed in, you can absolutely get the wal sound. Not exact-after all, it’s not a wal. But close enough to the ear to be almost unnoticeable. There are some good videos showcasing it here on yt as well.
That treble of the bridge filter can be super punchy when mixed win that low end of the neck filter. Especially with your playing style. It has a bit of punch, but with those pickups you got, it could be even more than mine. I believe he has a pedal version of the preamp? Not super sure, but he might. A lot safer than drilling out room for the preamp in the bass too.
Peter Collins RIP. Great stuff. Power Windows box set please!! 'Is money good or bad? It's both!' NP.
@@chrisdavies73 yeah, sad news. He produced two of my favourite sounding rush albums - Power windows and test for echo - and I think geddys bass always sounded amazing with him. Thanks for watching my channel
@@hemibass I still think the drum sound he captured on HYF is phenomenal personally!
@@chrisdavies73 I agree. And power windows has so much stuff going on, but every single thing is clear in the mix
Not forgetting the cowbell in-jokes😂 Apologies, been smoking 😉
Another amazing cover! Thank you!
@@jonnyfive8319 my pleasure. Thanks for watching!

@@DerekTJ thanks :)
Great cover of an incredible, but somehow underrated song. Your technique is so beautiful and hypnotic to watch. Geddy to me is one of the very few musical masters in all of popular music. Very, very few musicians can be said to have truly mastered their instrument as he has. What I especially love about his playing is the way he makes very melodic bass lines sound incredibly rhythmic at the same time, because of his aggressive attack. It’s because of that duel melodic and rhythmic space that Geddy occupies that Rush sounds so full for only a 3-piece.
So Geddy was already playing flamenco at this stage in the 80? A further question, if I may: how is flamenco on the fingers? It looks pretty brutal.
Thank you for an amazing upload.
@petertromp8786 I agree. Geddy is one of the all time greats at bass. He played with a combination of fluidity, melody and aggression that I've never seen anyone else do. He didn't do the flamenco stuff in the 80s, but he started to incorporate it into older songs on the later live tours. His live stuff from the 90s onwards is the stuff I really love, so I tend to copy that style in my videos. It used to be very hard on the hands, but its ok by now haha. Thanks for watching
@@hemibass Thanks for the reply. I rate Geddy even higher than Peart for technical ability and total mastery of instrument, although the 1-2 mega punch of Peart being an all time great drummer AND lyricist is obviously the reason Rush soared to the heights they did. I love Peart’s lyrics even more than his drumming and the way Geddy sang them with conviction and sensitivity while playing the bass at perhaps the highest level we’ve ever seen in rock music is still something I cannot wrap my head around.
I really hope Geddy somehow gets to see your videos, because I believe he’d truly enjoy them.
What’s your Top 5 Rush songs, by the way? Mine are Xanadu, Closer to the Heart, Jacob’s Ladder, Nobody’s Hero and Earthshine, with Distant Early Warning very close behind. Man, Rush’s entire discography is just pure gold.
Thanks for your time.
@@petertromp8786 I think my top 5 would be YYZ, Time Stand Still, Limelight, Subdivisions and The Big Money but there are lots of others I put in that same bracket. I think if I had to pick 5 that would be my list though. I hope Geddy would enjoy my videos, but I'm also very happy when Rush fans say they enjoy them :) My pleasure, thanks again for watching
@@hemibass Those are all great choices, but I especially love how highly you rate The Big Money; Power Windows is a Top 5 greatest ever Rush album for me (along with Moving Pictures, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres and probably Counterparts, or maybe Signals, depending on the day). The Big Money has probably my favourite Alex Lifeson guitar tone of Rush’s 80s period.
Power Windows is just such a melodic and polished album, with very nice, aggressive playing, despite it being a supposedly more subdued “80s Rush synth-heavy album”.
I can talk Rush all day. Thanks for indulging me.
Perfection as always, love the synths!
@@Smashies thanks! I'm pleased with how they came out. Thanks for watching

so damn good!
@@Jeff-2112 thanks!
Just wish I had more than 2 thumbs up to give you..
:D
Wow, did Geddy slap that way on the Rush original?
@@Shred_The_Weapon not like this, he played a much punchier style on the wal more over the bridge pickup. But he did play on the jazz bass a bit more like this later on! Thanks for watching
Awesome ! Can you tell what were your settings on the PSA ?
Thanks! Its got a little bit of drive with the lows and highs at about 6/10 and the mids at about 4/10 (the distortion controls). Its nothing too crazy in terms of distortion, just enough to get some dirt behind my clean tone
@@hemibass thanks man !
@@maximeputigny1135 No worries. I will do a video about my gear in more detail and I can show the settings exactly. It's a patch I probably won't change much because I'm very happy with it
