Keen to watch this one as I was a GR user for many years from the GR-20/GR33 through to GR-55 as soon as it came out. The GR-55 was pretty awesome (both the COSM and Synth sounds) and I miss it dearly having sold it as I stopped gigging. Always the biggest problem with these synths has been Roland/Boss's feble attempts at supporting software and the pretty useless pre-set patches. The GR-55 was loaded with around 300 IIRC and I didn't use a single one. The GR-55 was only usable thanks to 3rd party software that massively put Roland to shame (not that they ever did anything about it) and meant you could easily produce your own patches with specific switching. It was easier just to start from scratch. That and Roland generally put the gear out and then despite the users providing feedback on improvements, just never respond. This really does piss users off! Be interesting to see if they do the same, as 10 years later they just won't get away with it.
They removed one of the best features of the older units, the ability to blend/layer these sounds with the guitar (or bass) output. Without this feature to me thsi unit is useless!
Having a few GK / 13-pin guitars, and Boss Guitar Synths, this new GK-5 / serial / digital transition is gonna cost me around US $1500 list to go all in with the two converters, one GK-5 pickup, GM-800. Then you have to decide on the software model, the free version or will I need / want a subscription model? I don't like software subscription models personally. I have so many software products / plugins already; to willingly pay for a subscription it would need to be something I use all the time which is rare; I don't even use my DAW all the time, as I have standalone software apps I can use vs the plug-in version. Probably won't get another guitar synth unit since I still have the VG-88 v2 and the GR-33 using my Godin nylon and a classic OLP electric guitar. Of all the sounds there are, I only use a handful and don't see the need for more. But for those who are new to this device and the unlimited possibilities, it's worth it!
I love how Pete throws his little jokes in there and then looks at the camera. It reminds me of Benny Hill, because he used to do the same thing lol. 😂😂
Guitar synths are the only gear where I trust manufacturer's folks (from Boss/Roland) to do reviews.Because 95% of the usual review crowd on RUclips can't use them properly.
To Andertons: For us who have 13 pin synth guitars already (I have 3), how about a demo of the Boss GKC-AD, the 13 pin to serial converter. We would be more interested in the GM-800 if we 13 pin owners knew these converters work well. Please? Thank you.
What is needed is a 200 series format that we can load 20 presets of our own choosing from the cloud (included in the price of the pedal) that can be used without any GK pickup just our guitar. no whacky car crash sounds or useless scatting just the ones we select. We don't need 1200 tones that we will never be able to incorporate into any song. Just what we want, not what is decided for us. Then add a sequencer.
The VG-99 and GR-55 are the best that Roland could create, both in terms of design, a rich set of functionality and controllers, and most importantly, excellent fat sound! I consider the GM-800 to be a generally unsuccessful option, both in terms of design and in everything else. It was possible to upgrade the GR-55 by removing the 13-PIN cable and adding sample loading capabilities and that would be very cool!
As someone who's been a bedroom producer of electronic music for 9 years and just gotten into guitar a year ago, I really want this. Of course it's easier for me to play the keyboard, but expressing myself through string instruments are just something else. Edit: Just checked the price, and it's double of what I thought it would be. But okay, if I'm thinking about it as a desktop synth and that Boss is a Roland company, then the price is absolutely fair. But now I have to think about if it's actually worth the money or if I can make due with a keyboard synth like Microkorg XL+. Different thing of course. 2nd Edit: Okay, I see that one also needs a certain Boss pickup, which just jacks up the price significantly. Sorry, but that's just over the line price wise for me. Damn it... I see there's also the very affordable older generation Boss SY-200 with mono output (which I don't mind) that doesn't need any special pickups. But that probably also means that it's not as responsive maybe? 🤔😅
Try Jam Origin Midi Guitar guitar synth plugin, works with a normal guitar and cable, through basically any audio interface. For live use it can apparently be used with a laptop and programmable midi controller, but it really excels for recording as you can time nudge to offset any latency after the fact. If you really want to try Roland/Boss try a used GK - 3 pickup, or a built in system like Godin guitars SA series which have Graphtech Ghost pickups that far outclass the GK 3, and for foot pedals, the GR 20 is still the best priced option. When compared to the GR 55, the GR 20 gets you most of the same instruments, and tracks nearly identical while being far more intuitive to configure and setup. This new one seems like a stripped down GR 55/20 that can download/upload patches, not sure if it accepts actual VSTs or new midi sounds, seems like you can just share the ones you edit and mix with other users. If you dont want the orchestral real instrument sounds, the Boss SY series will get you into the techno synth type stuff without any extra stuff.
all I wish is that they'll make 1:1 reproductions of their legendary vintage synths but for this new pickup for guitar. I'd love to see a guitar version of a Juno or a Jupiter or a D50 :) maybe even a bass version of an SH :D
@morganbartfield5457 I have a You Rock midi guitar! So you reckon I should just get the recreations of these synths as is and just plug the You Rock into them? I thought it'd be cool to have recreations of legendary synths for Roland's guitar synth tech
This is great, though after all these years still requires to have that added pick up modification to a guitar. I wish they could come up with a solution that combines synth and regular guitar effects into one pedal. It is cool sounding.
I love my Boss SY1000 abnd have two guitars with the built in GK PU. Happy to see Boss included converters. This unit sounds amazing, and Alex is such a talented guy ( as is Pete ofcourse). I wish there was something similar for nylon strings guitar! I guess the Boss SY-200 is the right one for nylon guitars, but this is so in-depth and its synth engine is crazy!! :O
Man- as soon as I get my jaw off the floor, I'm going to go price one of these. My head is literally spinning with the possibilities this opens. Just bought a Headrush Mod. and the Headrush 12" cab to go with it. I was really disappointed and upset at first- until I figured out it's just the presets- they sound awful. And- that if you add some 3rd party IRs and update the firmware- it sounds way, way better. Now I'm freaked out at how good it sounds. Not every sound in it is perfect- there are still some that sound like a box of angry bees- but most sound great. In conjunction with something like this- that would be one helluva rig imo. The looper on this Headrush is amazing- probably the best I've ever used.

All the possibilities of a synth, and they open with... blues. How imaginative.
As someone who's been a bedroom producer of electronic music for 9 years and just gotten into guitar a year ago, I really want this. Of course it's easier for me to play the keyboard, but expressing myself through string instruments are just something else.
Edit:
Just checked the price, and it's double of what I thought it would be. But okay, if I'm thinking about it as a desktop synth and that Boss is a Roland company, then the price is absolutely fair. But now I have to think about if it's actually worth the money or if I can make due with a keyboard synth like Microkorg XL+. Different thing of course.
2nd Edit:
Okay, I see that one also needs a certain Boss pickup, which just jacks up the price significantly.
Alex is a musical genius, this sort of device definitely shows you how creative he can get.
Alex is a great player but most of this demo is just loud noise making!
that sounds surprisingly good
Saw Alex with Steven Wilson a few times, top-notch player! Synth module sounds great too, lots of possiblitlies. I wonder how it tracks on a bass.
Truly a legend. Alex
normally i hate synths but i think i could lose a few hours with this but I think it should have the pick up included for the price
Whoa! That's slicker than snail snot. I'll get this. 👍👍
Well that was a pretty awesome noise. Love it.
all I wish is that they'll make 1:1 reproductions of their legendary vintage synths but for this new pickup for guitar.
I'd love to see a guitar version of a Juno or a Jupiter or a D50 :)
maybe even a bass version of an SH :D
@morganbartfield5457 I have a You Rock midi guitar!
So you reckon I should just get the recreations of these synths as is and just plug the You Rock into them?
I thought it'd be cool to have recreations of legendary synths for Roland's guitar synth tech
This is great, though after all these years still requires to have that added pick up modification to a guitar. I wish they could come up with a solution that combines synth and regular guitar effects into one pedal. It is cool sounding.
This is impressive. Boss nailed it
Sounds fantastic!
12:43 well done lads 😂
this sounds so good as well
I love my Boss SY1000 abnd have two guitars with the built in GK PU. Happy to see Boss included converters. This unit sounds amazing, and Alex is such a talented guy ( as is Pete ofcourse). He is THE reason for me to buy the SY1000 and most likely I'll get the new one as well. Thanks for a great demo!!
I wish there was something similar for nylon strings guitar! I guess the Boss SY-200 is the right one for nylon guitars, but this is so in-depth and its synth engine is crazy!! :O
What is the guitar he is playing? It is stunning
Damn that is so mega cool!! Wishlist material!! 🤩🙌✨🎸
FANTASTIC Channel. Please keep posting. I’ve bought 4 Amazing guitars from Andertons Music off the back of these informative, very well presented, quality and objective presentations.
so amazing, thank you so much for that much inspiration
Nice review/demo. Thanks
Alex could demo a baked potato and I'd still wanna buy it immediately. Such a fantastic player!
This is great for the creative songwriters. You can write whole film scores on this !
It sounds incredible! What's the tracking like if you plug the guitar directly in with a normal cable?
It won't work without the pickup
Mr Alex is juat amazing😊what a player❤❤❤❤
Dude!!! That opening track tho!!!
What an awesome unit, very fun.
