  • Marathon - off of my favorite Rush album, “Power Windows”, which came out in 1985. It was the first album to feature Geddy’s use of the Wal bass which belonged to, producer, Peter Collins. While Geddy was waiting for his own Wal to arrive he used a Steinberger on this tour, which sounded great as I remember it.
    There are a fair number of Rush tribute acts out there, some are better than others, but I consider all of them to be noble in their efforts. In my opinion, Rush is one of the most difficult bands to cover. Most I’ve seen on line and a few I’ve seen in person. I’m always a little skeptical until I see a band really play live because so much can be improved upon during the recording and editing process. I’m not a purist either. I don’t really care how many members it takes for the band to recreate the music, so long as they are faithful to it. In late 2015 we had the pleasure of seeing the Rush tribute band, Lotus Land, perform at Daryl’s House. For those who may not know know, Daryl’s House is owned by Daryl Hall (of Hall and Oates) and is a live music venue/restaurant in Pawling, NY. It is also where Daryl now films his show. We enjoyed them so much that when we saw they were returning in November of 2016, we decided to go and see them again. Lotus Land's bassist/vocalist/keyboardist, Christopher Nelson, and I were acquainted on Facebook and I offered him the use of my Wal bass for the show. He actually expressed some interest in it, so I went to the club early that day to drop the bass off. I made sure to tell him not to feel at all obligated to use it if he did not feel completely comfortable. If I were him, with all the multitasking he has to do on stage, the last thing I would want to do would be to pick up a strange instrument. From our brief meeting I can say that I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who is both as gifted and as humble as Chris. He hits all the money notes the bass, vocals, and keys. To do any one of those things well would be considered an accomplishment, but to be able to do all 3!!! One in a million! If you’ve not heard of them, check them out. www.lotuslandba...
    Below is the transcript from my Facebook post about our meeting -
    “We had the pleasure of attending the Lotus Land Rush Tribute show at Daryl's House last night. Of course, they rocked. Christopher Nelson took me up on my offer to use the Wal for a song and, I have to say, it sounded fantastic on "Marathon". Always the gentleman, he was gracious enough to introduce bass (and myself) to the crowd which was a hoot. Lynn and our friends, Dave and Deborah, started cheering but I quickly shushed them. Mercifully, Chris couldn't see me in the crowd to point me out. You don't see these basses around too often and I can't think of anyone else I'd rather hear take one out for a spin.
    We were treated to a fantastic mix by Peter Moshay who has engineered, produced, and mixed, not only Hall & Oates, but everyone from Mariah Carey to Barbara Streisand. He's even slummed it and recorded me once or twice.
    We had a great time. I dropped the bass off for sound check and returned at 7:30 for the show. When we pulled up to the club the parking attendants put us in the last spot in the lot, right by the front door. When we saw the hostess, she told us that our table had been given away in error and we wound up sitting at Daryl Hall's personal table. Oh, and I almost forgot, Lynn and I got the last two pork bellies in the house!
    The food, service, music, and, most of all, the company was wonderful.”

    Well done! From what I read in a guitar magazine some 30 years or so ago, Geddy Lee had a terrible time with this song on-stage. He said at the time this is the most difficult song to play live. He had to practice playing the bass and sing at the same time, to the point where he wasn't even thinking about the bass chords when playing live. Most bass player would simplify the chords for the sake of playing live later on. Not Geddy!!!!

    This is one of the reasons why Rush were so great: they never made it easy on themselves; they always pushed the limits of their talent to see what was on the other side and grow.

    So thrilled "Power Windows" is your favorite Rush album, as it is mine as well! I know some fans don't care for the growth of the keyboards, but I think they did a lot of material that's sonically textured in a really fascinating way on this record. Great rendition as always.

    Every couple of years I have to revisit this Library of Geddy, not just to marvel at the beautiful Canadian musical mind that created these auditory artworks that are Rush bass lines, but also to witness a true Rush fan, a master bassist in your own right; a keeper of the flame, and I truly hope that you’ve weathered the craziness that has been life on Earth for the past few years, and are keeping well!! ✌🏻🇨🇦

      Rush tribute bands seem to be a dime a dozen and only a few really stand out. The make or break is always the singer who I've found is usually some guy with the standard black Fender J bass doing an awful-to-sort of OK imitation of Lee's voice . Power Windows who played the tri state area in the 90s to early 00s were the best one I remember. They made it look easy and the singer didn't make me cringe

    It's one of the greats. It's about nothing and about everything at the same time. Your playing - fantastic. I've picked up the bass after about 10 years just recently, and thought that i can't play anymore. After i found myself next to a proper amp, that feeling changed somewhat. These videos of proper playing don't help, because i continue to struggle with these multi-string fast arpeggios on a shitty amp at home (which conscience doesn't allow me to crank up at home anymore) - i feel like shit. But someday...

    Phenomenal work as usual. Power Windows is my favorite album from Rush, followed immediately by GUP and then Roll the Bones (I'm weird, I know). If you're looking for a fantastic recording of the Steinberger on the PW tour, check out the Visions and Illusions boot; it's a soundboard rip from their show in Philly. The bass is super clear and up front in the mix and that unique super precise twang/growl that Steinbergers have comes through really clearly, particularly in this tune. My only gripe is that the Wal tended to get buried in the mix when played live, the difference in shows from Roll the Bones with the Wal and Counterparts with the Jbass is just astonishing.

    Stellar cover, like usual. I would love to learn how to do that quick string hopping thing (whatever you call it) in the main riff. It's a technique used in virtually all Rush songs, and I don't even know what it's called, but you do it quite well.
    I checked out that link for Lotus Land--seriously gifted musicians!
    Rush's albums from the 80's are my favorites, with the exception of Hold Your Fire, didn't really care for that one.

      Thanks a lot. I call them "triplets" but someone who knows more than me says that they are not...haha. I give a brief explanation on how to do them on my YYZ "tutorial" if you want to check that out.
      I don't mind Hold Your Fire but I much prefer Power Windows to that.

    I love hearing this on a Wal. I'll be honest, I never liked Geddy's Steinberger. The Wal is way better for what Geddy was trying to do in the mid-late 80s. And Lotus Land's cover of Marathon is spot on. I've been listening to their covers online for a while now. I need to make it to one of their shows.

      The Steinberger live sounded pretty good I think. Lotus Land really does put on a great show.

    • @jamesnoble8205
      @jamesnoble8205 5 лет назад

      Geddy admitted many years later that he was never really happy with the 'berger's tone and was only using it so he wasn't knocking things over on stage with the neck of a standard bass

    I found one of these for sale, they want close to 8k for it but am thinking about pulling the trigger. It's a 1999 Wal MkII same specs and colors as in this video, Geddy Lee model.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  6 лет назад

      That might be more than a new on costs. Granted, it's an awesome bass but I have a number of other, and much less expensive, basses that I like just as much, if not more.

    • @SuckerFreeGear
      @SuckerFreeGear 6 лет назад

      Look at the current Wal price list. They are close to 9k now for a base model with no options plus import duties so 8k is a deal.

    • @aarondavid4461
      @aarondavid4461 5 лет назад +1

      @@TJH3113 I think he may have only been popular in Canada in the 80's as he's a Canadian musician. There are quite a few good songs, I think the song 'Cosmetics' has a grooving bassline in it, 'Moonlight desires' is a great one too, 'Dancing on my own ground' has a good upbeat feel too it. I mention him because he has that Rush, Canadian sound to his music and he was a staple on music channels in Canada in the late 80's; I remember drawing with Crayon on my mom's Gowan LP as a kid, probably why I still remember him.

    How cool is that,,, and to sit with the man himself, Daryl Hall. Was it weird sitting at his table did you get Starstrucked? I would have I think. . Did you get to talk to him much? I watch his Show on VH1 whenever I can get a chance. What did you guys talk about if you got to.? HUH? I would have figured your favorite RUSH album being Moving Pictures ??????
