- Happy Birthday to Geddy Lee.
What can I say? He’s truly one of a kind and my biggest influence, by far, on the bass guitar.
Gene Simmons got me to pick up the bass. Geezer Butler opened my eyes as to what you could do with a bass. And Geddy has kept me playing all these many years later. I never seem to lose interest in learning, relearning, and playing his bass lines.
Well, this one caught me unexpectedly. Fortunately, I happen to have a small stockpile of Rush re-dos in the vault. Since this song came in second place in the last “viewer’s choice poll” I thought I’d go with it and hope that you enjoy it. I think that the bass part under the guitar solo is especially tasty.
The song is “Open Secrets” off of their “Hold Your Fire” album which came out in 1987 and was part of my favorite era of Rush.
I’m playing the 80’s Spector NS-2A.
A few other quick nuggets…
- Earlier this week, on the 27th, was the 33rd anniversary of the release of Madonna’s debut album. You have no idea how close you guys came to getting a cover of “Borderline” but, I just couldn’t bring myself to post it.
- I’m way behind in responding to comments.
- I came dangerously close to getting a Wal bass.
Am I the only one that's amazed at how Geddy Lee writes these intricate bass lines song after song, no matter how obscure? And, then to see how fucking well Troy plays these tunes that shows us how incredibly his style conforms to Geddy's song after song. I mean, fuckin wow. Troy, if I could contribute a vote for best RUclips bassists, I would. Hands down. Nice work!
No, you're not the only one.
I'm humbled by the second half of your comment though. Thank you for kind words and generous compliment.
TJH3113 I meant every word of it. I appreciate your response.
This cover made me realize how much I was missing out on this song, I don't usually listen to Hold Your Fire. But wow, this blew me away!
Great. I hope you enjoyed it.
Masterpiece.....Best Hold Your Fire Álbum song.....
It is, isn't it?
Great Rush song from one of my favorite Rush albums! Thanks for doing this one!
Agreed! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
It sounds beautifully clear and articulate. The Spector really suits your style of playing (and Geddy's lines, too).
Thank you kindly.
Super underrated, I hardly hear anyone talk about let alone play this song at all. One of my favorites you're great as always.
Thanks a lot.
One of my favourite rush songs, great cover! :)
Thanks a lot.
@@TJH3113 it's 2020, I hope you bought that Wal bass to help you through these times! Keep playing! :)
Right on! I'm a drummer and have always admired the bass guitar. I bought this album when it first came out and was immediately appreciative of this track, I played it over and over again, and still do to this day, so I know every insruments part. Well done A++
Very cool!
I’m glad you liked it, thanks!
Was just listening to Hold Your Fire an hour ago, this is definitely one of the top 3 songs on the album. Great cover and tone as always
Excellent. Thanks a lot.
Love to see all the active and passive Rush fans marvel at this "obscure" song. Always a favorite and was humming the bass line in my head when it occurred to me: Troy has probably covered it already. Twice. I clicked on the last one "in my rational point of view" because its probably more polished than the first!
very gifted like Geddy, i watch & listen in awe how Geddy sung & played at the same time , i know other people do it , but this fast playing is awsome !
Thanks so much. Geddy is one in a million!
Hold Your Fire and Power Windows are right up there with some of my top Rush albums. This song is certainly one of their overlooked masterpieces. Great cover!
Truth! Thank you!
I have to agree. Those two albums recieve a lot of hate, but I love them dearly
My top 2 Rush albums!
I always loved that busy bass during Alex’s solo.
Great job
Me too!
Thanks a lot!
Loved this cover!! I listened to Hold Your Fire on a Sony Walkman with a 3-band EQ, until the Dolby couldn't cancel out the white noise from excessive play!! I entered Army Basic Training at Ft. Sill, OK in July of 1987, and always remember this track and the others from that time. Happy Birthday Geddy! Loved how smooth the bass is in this song. Really stands out during their synth/electronica prog stages. Bravo Troy! Awesome job as always!
Thanks a lot for the great comment and the kind words.
No matter what bass u play they all sound amazing!
Thanks for the kind words.
The Wal Bass is an alluring beast. I don't know what the circumstances of you coming dangerously close to getting one were but if it were me I would have been a weak man and caved in. You truly are the stronger of us all. Keep up the playing man. You're the best of Rush on RUclips by far!
I higher offer was accepted, though I was not far off and was actually contemplating just buying it, but , even though it was offered at a very reasonable price, it was still a lot of money and, as I've said to another commenter, "I was more relieved than disappointed that I did not get it."
Thank you for the kind words.
+TJH3113 As awesome as it would be to see that bass in your hands, I don't think it matters what bass you have with your skills. Truly inspiring my man. Thank you for the reply and thank you for the amazing videos.
Remarkable Troy!!!! I love Geddy Lee. :-)
I tell my sons that a lot...sometimes you just have to let it go right? :-)
Thanks. Me too.
Perfection
Thank you
Wonderful! I love 80's Rush.
Thanks! Me too!
The bass line to this song is just insane! Imagine singing over it and actually writing these bass parts??And this is why Geddy has been and always be my favorite bass player.
It is, isn't it? No thanks...could you imagine? Mine too.
This period of Rush was not my favorite, but you have opened my eyes (and ears) to some outstanding playing by Geddy. Great job.
That's cool. Thanks a lot.
Great job again! I can see why folks who were raised on Fly By Night or 2112 might not have liked the 80s Rush - but if you are a bass player, how can you not like this??? I've always loved the whole part, but that stuff under the guitar solo is nuts.
Geddy just goes off all over the place and you once again did it justice. Two thumbs up, 11 out of 10, gold medal Troy!
Thanks. Totally agree!
Happy birthday to Hold Your Fire... a great and I think underappreciated album.
Thanks for the reminder, Daniel. This album was the last gasp of the synth era.
Thank you for keeping me awake all night!!!! Superb!
My pleasure. Thanks!
I'd like to second Clyde's comment about Troy being the best youtube bassist currently posting these type of video's. I haven't seen anyone better. I love the way he brings the bass lines on these songs to life. He's good for my practice too as everytime I watch one of these video's I have to go off and practice. :)
Besides reaffirming the fact that you are are unbelievably talented, this video also shows that, in order to replicate the way Geddy Lee played live on the most recent tours, you really need to learn songs across their discography. This reminds me of the way that he solos at the end of Leave That Thing Alone during the Time Machine Tour--the phrasing is like a whole different bassist if you only learned the earlier albums before.
Yes, this was my favorite period of Geddy's playing.
Heard it was Geddy's birthday, and came straight to this channel. Sure enough, another gem to entertain and amaze. Easily one of my favorite channels. One last note: Lemon Song.
I saw it on Facebook and wasn't going to pass up the opportunity. Thanks a lot. A lot of people ask for The Lemon Song.
I love that bass line. Troy nailed it again... as usual. Best wishes.
Thanks a lot.
wwow! the solo... Going through the deeper cuts!! :)) And new videos...
Yet another underrated Rush song. This song sounds like it's from the Power Windows album. I wonder if it was a leftover song and they put it on the Hold Your Fire album. During this period, Rush was killing it song writing wise. They could do no wrong. Great to see up close how this song was played on bass. Thanks!
Not underrated my me. It does sound a bit closer to PW than this collection of songs so you might be right about that. I agree, I think they were at their pinnacle with these two albums, particularly PW - writing, arrangements, lyrics, technology and production were all absolutely top-notch. Thanks.
@@TJH3113 I also think the Power Windows/HYF/Presto run was the best Rush ever did (production suffered on Presto, but the songwriting is so good I don't care), and I feel like those records are finally starting to get the respect they've always deserved.
@@ischmidt There was not a bad album from Signals to Presto (including Presto), imo.
Great cover to celebrate Geddy's Birthday. It always pays to watch your videos until the very last second. You never know how your going to end the video :)
Thanks Constantine. I had to go to the end to see what you were talking about. Sometimes I get carried away. Haha.
I can't play Bass, but I am amazed I can hear Every note you play and realize how intricate Geddy writes his music. You make me appreciate ALL Of it and the memories come RUSHing back !
It's always nice to hear when non-bass players appreciate the videos. Yes, Geddy put a ton of nuance into nearly all of his bass-lines.
@@TJH3113 I always wonder how YOU can pick out all those individual notes. It is a mystery to me. Or I guess that's just what a musician does. I did that on my own with electric guitar but never pursued lessons and all that. My big fat fingers are probably meant for the Bass anyway. 😁
Its funny. I started on 70's Rush, and it'll always be my most nostalgic era. I had a hard time at first getting into the 80's era, but wow, I got into it all right. Hold Your Fire is a FANTASTIC album, as is Power Windows. Nowadays when I listen to Rush I almost always put on something from 80's. You did an amazing job with this song, I've seen all your videos over the years, and often revisit them. I've even showed my mom a few of them, Camera Eye and Digital Man, two of her faves. Thanks Troy! You are awesome
I could watch you play all day!
You need to find a better hobby, but thank you for saying that.
Great song. Great performance!
It is, isn't it? Thanks Alan!
One of my favorite songs to play from Rush. Hold Your Fire in general is probably my favorite album from Rush to play bass to. Very underrated album. Thanks for this upload!
Its been a year since the last show in LA and the concert withdrawals are overwhelming...
The more I listen to HYF the more I like it.
What's not to like?
The best bass lines of Geddy Lee. Amazing work!
Thank you.
Just Amazing! Thanks for sharing your love of the Bass... and Geddy!
One of my favourite from Rush and that's an hard choice
It is a hard choice, isn't it? I still go with Power Windows myself.
Irmão quero te parabenizar. Vc já toca há uns anos no You Tube e sua Evolução é Gritante. O Sr está Gigante. Continue firme. Esse Spector está timbrando demais. No original Geddy Lee usa um Wal Bass Mk1. Que fechou a fábrica e reabriu uns anos atrás. Abs.
Muito obrigado. Eu tinha um Wal por um tempo, mas o vendi de volta ao cavalheiro de quem o comprei, como foi nosso acordo. Há certas coisas sobre os Spectors que eu prefiro ao Wal.
I was hoping you would post a video today, knowing it was Geddy's birthday. This one definitely did not disappoint. Hold Your Fire is one of my favorite Rush albums because the bass is so prominent and busy in the mix on a lot of the songs. That guitar solo section is quite the stretch.
Thanks a lot. Yeah, I don't know how he came up with some of those lines he played under the solos. Lotta notes.
I've totally overlooked this bass line! Wow! Not gonna lie - as much as I love the Geddy Wal bass sound and how it fit together, I always thought HYF and Presto just lacked balls in the guitar and especially the bass. Some of the best songs there are done a disservice, IMO. That Spector's sound is what I feel those albums SHOULD have sounded like. The synth era stuff is actually probably my favorite, and I love how Rush beefed them up on the recent tours. Really enjoyed giving this one another listen.
Hey, everyone's opinion is valid. What you like, is what you like. The Wal was a dramatic departure, in terms on cleanliness, from what his bass sound had been on previous albums. Unfortunately, I think the pendulum swung too far in the dirty direction with Counterparts and beyond. Thanks a lot.
Very impressive mate. Nicely done 👌
Thanks a lot!
@@TJH3113 you’re welcome. Loved the bass since I was a lad. Only wish I’d bother to learn rather than just envying others. Favourite ever bass player has got to be Mark King from Level 42. Unbelievable player. Take a listen if you never have. Their earlier albums have amazing bass. Other great bass players I have to include are Led Zepplin, Rush, Pink Floyd, Duran Duran and Talk Talk to name a few.
As a kid who loved Yes, Genesis, Rush and Pink Floyd in the mid to late 80s I hated Madonna back then. Now, I'm not too ashamed to say, I'd like to watch your Borderline cover. There a few of her songs I now enjoy. Forgive me? lol
Same here.
I agree, I hated Madonna for what she represented back then - total style without substance, but I always thought Borderline was catchy tune. And, I always enjoyed the challenge of learning a good keyboard/sequenced bass line.
You are forgiven my son.
TJH3113 Speaking of good sequence bass lines, Hyperactive by Thomas Dolby...
@@TJH3113 She had her moments. "Live To Tell" is simply a fantastic vocal performance, and the producers/studio musicians she worked with definitely knew what they were doing.
Regarding sequenced bass lines, Geddy himself did one for "Scars", of course.
Awesome cover!! Love that tone and your style fits like a glove -- thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for the very kind words, I really appreciate them. Take care!
Nice work!
Thanks!
incredible bass line has this song, Geddy sings and plays at the same time even more incredible !! haha, congratulations Troy, you play every note perfectly, you're fabulous.
It does, doesn't it? Thanks so much.
Excellent as always!
The Professor didn't write a whole lot of songs about love, but when he did, they were more accurate and realistic than most love songs.
Very true... "Ghost of a Chance" and "Speed of Love" are two other good examples of that.
XD!!!! Thank you!! I feel the same way about Geddy lol though I'm only a 4 year player. You dominate the Tube! Keep them coming Troy. They videos inspire and help me learn the songs as well. The ones I can play anyway lol.I'm surprised you haven't done...In The Mood lol.
You made my day!! H. B. Geddy! This time sound better than your video on Mar 26, 2010.
Excellent. I think the sound quality is a bit better myself.
I got goosebumps at 5:37 and on. Great job! And, Happy Birthday to Ged!
The song ends at 5:37, what are you saying? haha. I know where you mean. Thanks.
+TJH3113 my apologies. Correction: 3:37. Heheh. Nice catch. I Need bi-focals.
Seriously man!
Your playing is absolutely amazing. ❤👍
Thanks a lot!
Sounds exactly like Geddy
Wow, a great cover, spot on!!
Thanks a lot!
Amazing!!
Thanks.
This is another song Clockwork Angels will be rehearsing soon. I’m so glad I can always count on you to keep me right Troy. 😃👍
Awesome! Glad I could be of service.
Sensacional como sempre!!!
Obrigado como sempre.
Love seeing that Peavy behind you. Can’t tell if its a T-20, T-40, or Foundation.
Actually, the bass on the left was an Ibanez RB850 Roadster II and the bass to its right, a Guild B-301. I did have two T-40's at one point but I've since sold them. They are fantastic basses, I just didn't find myself playing them very ofter.
Awesome job, Troy! You make it look effortless, but as anyone knows, Geddy's bass lines are never simple. The 80's era of Rush was by far my favorite time as a fan with Power Windows probably being my favorite album. Great job as usual!
Lovely bass and lovely playing, as always :) Did a quick Rush-cover myself today. The way that You approach yours (or, at least how I feel that you're approaching them) is a huge inspiration playing wise! :) All the best!
Thank you very much. Same to you.
One of my favourite Rush basslines! You nailed it
Thanks a lot.
I remember this being the album that turned me away from Rush for a while, I just didn't dig it at the time, but man, watching you play that line and listening to Alex's guitar part makes me want to revisit this record. Happy B-day to Geddy!
This period had that effect on a lot of Rush fans so you're not alone. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks a lot.
Top ten deep cut, great job
Thank you
This is some of your best playing. I absolute love the song and your playing and tone.
Thanks a lot. I think this bass's sound really lends itself to this material.
Love this one!
Thanks.
Glad to give this one a thumbs up, you really nailed it.
Amazing bro🔥🔥🔥
Thanks 🔥
Killing it on the Spector!
As with ALL your videos You post onto here Troy.............You RAWK that bass!!! (EVEN IF,you HAD decided to play that ridiculous Madonna song INSTEAD!!! LOL.) So Myself, and everyone ELSE on here,THANKS-YOU DEARLY for deciding to Play THIS ONE instead!!! Haha. Of course, this song, comes off one of my FAVORITE Rush-Albums (Which, for some reason,NOT many Rush-fans seem to enjoy Hold-Your-Fire Songs!?!?) Granted, this isn't my FAVORITE off this album but just watching YOU play it,makes me smile nonetheless!!! :)
I've always enjoyed your videos, but today i plugged my laptop to my bass amp,
man you have no idea how i enjoyed every F note on the E string (1:36 etc)
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot. I hope nothing blew up on you.
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. The lyrics hit me at a personal level and as a bass player of nearly 40 years, I’m still blown away at this bass line. How difficult was this one for you to finally get down out of all the Rush songs you learned? I’m curious..
Yeah, this is a great one. It’s been some time since I’ve heard it. My playing style was most closely aligned with Geddy’s for these two albums- Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. So they came a bit more naturally than a lot of their other material. I listened to the song and it’s pretty straightforward. It gets a bit crazy during the guitar solo though.
Awesome job...
Thanks a lot.
looks like you had to concentrate on this one - heh.... Beautiful man!
I've got to concentrate on everything these days. Thank you.
Damn this song is beautiful. I need to give HYF another shot.
It is, isn't it? I think you really should.
Fantastic cover - yet again! Love the playing at the 3:40 and 5:10 marks and your tone is awesome. I play too but nothing close to your skills.. thanks for the inspiration.
I was the 300th like, Do I win a prize? lol. Once again Mr. TJ, masterful!
The balloons only drop on the 100th "Like", sorry. Thank you.
Bass sounds gorgeous. I'd forgotten the great opening lyric: it went right by me, at the time it went over my head - Neil Peart
Thanks.
Awesome job Troy, one of my favorite rush songs. Only Neil could convey such powerful lessons in a lyrical way. If I could make a suggestion, I'd like to suggest The boys in the band by gentle giant. It's a long one, but I would really love to see it.
Thanks a lot. True about the lyrics. I though these two albums were some of his finest work. I've never listened to GG but I'll try and check it out. On a related note, my brother in law owns the guitar player for GG's old Les Paul Burst. It's worth an absolute fortune.
+TJH3113 wow, I bet! I also would go out on a limb and say that that guitar sounds amazing! And even if you don't do the song, thanks for taking into consideration!
Great job Troy! As usual.
Wonderful Troy, not sure how I missed this or your Grand Designs video, both with the Spector. They really caught my ear as I'm on the lookout for a Korean Spector among a few other possibilities. But after hearing this, I'm pretty much sold on getting a Spector, probably a new Spector Legend 4 Classic.
The tone here was wonderful... do you recall if you ran both pups wide open, or did you favor the bridge? (I know these videos were from last year and you may not remember). The sound from the Spector comes quite close to the Wal-era, which has a bit of a nasal honk/growl that I quite like.
I know that a lot of it is in the hands, but it looks like we have similar right hand techniques. I don't think Geddy played quite as hard back then -- his tone was a lot more tight, clipped, staccato and funky (to my ears, anyway) compared to the looser, harder flamenco stuff from Counterparts on.
Started playing bass when I was 15 and GUP came out, but it was a year later when Power Windows hit that my right hand developed and grew my index nail like Ged. PW and HYF forever cemented my right hand technique, for good or for bad.
Thanks again for the great vids Troy!
Happy birthday toThe Master!
Thx for posting Troy, perfect rendition as always.
Cheers mate! (BTW curious to see a Madonna's cover by you)
Thanks a lot. Be careful what you wish for. I'll probably post it, it's actually a great bass, albeit keyboard bass, line.
Great tune, great job 👏 👍
The pumpkin 🎃 head is cool as fu@%😅
Thanks for the visit! I think that one’s called “Lord of the Patch” and was made by DeathStudios.
Unbelievably fantastic, Troy. What would you suggest I buy as a beginner bass guitar? I may be 47 and starting late, but you've put me over the edge to take it up after this vid!
Aw, thanks a lot. Man, your options are limitless as far as entry level basses go and the lines are really blurred between what is entry level and what is player grade instruments. I'd say to sit down with a bunch and see what feels most comfortable. I understand that, as a beginner, you may not even know what is comfortable or not, but I think you'll be able to get a feel for things. In the store, plug the bass in and play the open strings, one at a time and see how they ring out and sustain. Then play one note at a time on each string all the way up the neck looking for even output and/or dead spots. Take your time. Don't buy for looks.
With that being said, Ibanez and Squier instruments would be at the top of my list. One bass I've played and would HIGHLY recommend would be the Ibanez Talman. They're quickly gaining in popularity and going up in price but the first generation basses are still out there and very reasonable priced.
awesome as you always do!
i dont miss a single Rush cover from you.
(about my english? i'm sorry! i hope i made me understand. hahaha)
Thank you so much. Your english is muy bien and better than my spanish will ever be.
hahahaha thank you! keep the awesome work! i'm your fan!
I love Rush and I have a guilty pleasure for Borderline. Do. It. Please.
Can’t keep my eyes off the masks
Sounds great btw
Love those bass lines during the guitar solo
Thanks a ton!
Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
Amazing as always! how do you have your sansamp set up here if you don't mind me asking ? all the best mate :)
Great job, as always.
Question: The camera is at a slightly different angle and I noticed the picture that is usually behind your head. Is that a picture you shot?
Thanks. No, that's a picture I got at a horror convention. It's a photo of print of a painting printed on canvas, of an eerie looking nun with one cataract'd eye.
Great sounding bass Troy, have you got a tad of chorus or flanger in there? Very Geddy 80s sound, nice work!
Thanks. No effects. My bass might be phasing a bit with the bass on the recording.
Nice base tone man
bass*
I got you. Thanks.
Good cover. I love this song, and album. For someone who likes geddy so much, you sure are such a different player than he is. He has that kinda really nasty very aggressive style of raw playing, and you have that much lighter jazz style of plucking. I like both styles, i just found it interesting how different you are from your favorite bassist.
It may look as if I am playing lightly, but I can break cinderblocks with my plucking fingers.
"Hold Your Fire sucks, man." No way dude, Geddy rips on that album! As showcased magnificently in the above video.
Yeah, many Rush fans feel/felt that way. Myself, I loved this stuff and the fact that they brought out so much material off of Power Windows on the Clockwork tour proves they like it as well.
Wish I had the stumble factor for finding those basses. A wal would be
excellent if they kept up well. Friend I know has an Alembic. So want.
Wow!!! Hey guy, how do you do it??? Congrats guy!!!!
Thanks so much Rodrigo!
when this album came out I wanted a heavier Rush...now that they are heavier, I want this back.
But... Headlong flight. Such a good song mang.
Heavy Rush, light Rush, synth Rush... it doesn't matter to me. All their eras kick ass!
See how that works. The thing is, I think they left prog behind after this album.
And yet they were still of the game. :)
Great playing, and that would be really cool if you got the wal bass. Was it a mk. 1?
Thanks. It would and it wouldn't. Yes, it was an MK1.
I'm such an annoying fan, I know... sorry.... but I have the exact same bass; which pick ups do you have on for this song? Cause it sounds like the J but it has too much low end for that, or maybe its my monitor... I'm confused.
Again, impeccable. Much appreciated.
No you're not. This video is pretty old so I was using the stock "Spector" designed pickups, both full up. I rarely ever select one or the other or do any blending. If I have them set to anything other that full up, I'll say so in the description. The output of the bridge p/u was a bit low on this bass compared to the neck p/u. I recently replaced them with a new set of EMG HZ (passive p/j's) and the output is even lower. Eesh. Still doesn't sound too bad, just a bit mellower.
Thanks a lot.
Fcuk me! That's a fantastic and tricky bass line and you nailed it. I LOVE your sound on this video - a bit of treble, a bit of overdrive, it is SO Geddy. Thank you for another fantastic cover. p.s. @Clydesdale comment was bang on :o)
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you liked it.
