FIXING My $4,000 Saturn Sky REDLINE Codes P0010 And P0011

- Опубликовано: 21 фев 2019
- I bought an incredibly cheap 2007 Saturn Sky Redline convertible that's in unbelievably good condition. It's powered by the direct injected, turbocharged and variable valve timing LNF 2.0L Ecotec engine. The VVT isn't working on the 4 cylinder power plant thanks to a camshaft position actuator solenoid malfunction. After hooking the code reader up to the car I was seeing codes P0010 and P0011.
P0010 - "A" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)
P0011 - "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
Fixing the VVT solenoid is a simple and quick job you should have no problem doing at home. In my case I only needed the intake camshaft solenoid.
The only tools needed for the repair are a small screwdriver to release the tabs on the solenoid connectors and a 10MM socket with an extension.

I'll let you guys know when the Dorman part fails, probably never will but I'll make a video to prove a point 😁
Link for the grease? I cant even pronounce it!
I’ve been disappointed with the aftermarket in general, except for certain reputable third party suppliers. I found TRW brand VW Disc brake pads wear and perform better than VW OEM pads at a much lower price.
@Formula Firebird amzn.to/2NobFam
is it better then 303 aero protectant?
Most people have parts of Dorman quality on their cars and don't even know it.
Just wear your seatbelt though.
Always quick and efficient and great camera angle, especially for those of us, who like to see your upper body instead of the work being done on your car
My God, Amber is wondrous...drives a stick...respects donut-ability...positive attitude toward endless car-enthusiasm. Pleasant in all ways. And all w out complaining. You struck platinum, my friend. Godspeed, you lucky b@stard!
Punching above his weight class. 😉
Most impressive part of this vid? You could find the 10 mil.
Right? You'd think there was a national 10mm epidemic. (I just put my tools back when I'm done)
I buy them by the gross.....
Pro-Tip: Never ever use Dorman parts if you love your car and/or don't want to do the same part replacement twice. The few bucks you save is an illusion. The AC Delco OEM parts at O"Reilly's only costs $7 more versus the Dorman.
I really appreciate you videos. You explain things quickly and straight to the point. This video was great except the camera was mostly focusing on you instead of your hands where you were removing and replacing the parts. Please keep that in mind for your next video. Keep up the excellent work.
Nice, quick, (hopefully) cheap, and easy fix! That rocks! Just ordered some of the Honda grease for my seals, thanks! M3 threw an SRS light today, I’ll have to film that fix.
Lol the garage remote would’ve been faster.
It’s in another car 🍻
It would've been cool if the camera was actually showing what you were working on instead of just you from the wrists up...😏
My new favorite channel...Every episode I'm asking just how many cars does this guy have!
I always loved the orange backlighting in Saturn interiors
Always fun to get a good price on a fun car and fix it fast and cheap . I usually use Rock Auto for parts because it’s cheaper and you can choose who made the part . Best of luck with that car .
You did the job without losing your 10 mm socket! You da man, JR!
Thanks for mentioning Shin-Etsu silicone grease. We’ve been dealing with a leak in a 40-year-old hardtop with frameless windows, and I’m going to treat the seals of my 2012 Mustang convertible (the “garage queen”). Plus, I think it might help fix a squeak coming from my elliptical.
I’m still bummed that I missed out on the deal you made on that Sky, especially since it was in my backyard (I’m in Rogers/Bentonville). But then again, I don’t have the amount of time you have to work on these rides and get them running properly...thanks again for the tip!
Nice tips, look forward to your future vids...
Nice easy fix, can’t wait to see the upgrades.
I'll have to agree with the lady in the video, I used to hate convertibles, but ever since I bough a MKI convertible I fell in love with them.
Cool - didn't realize these videos were so recent. I was just looking for Solstice videos since I was looking into buying one myself (and obviously this and a Solstice are pretty much the same :)).
I ended up doing both on my 07 HHR but the code was exhaust as well. Not a horrible job. The air intake is bolted down above the solenoids so somewhat a PITA to get to but worked mint.
I have been lucky with my 2008 redline. Have not had anything go wrong. Just love it. The ride is real ruff. The Saturn dealer told me it was so you can take a curve at 60mph. Like I would try that. Just love the looks of it. It would help you if you had a camera person. Have a great time.
Thanks for the tip on the honda shin etsu grease!
That stuff rocks, use it on any top seals and they'll stop squeaking! 🍻
That 2.4 is notorious for camshaft actuators breaking. I did both the Intake and Exhaust camshaft actuators on a Pontiac G6 with the 2.4 and fixed it for $80 in parts and 20 minutes
You need a Pimp Mobile like the one Hoovie just showed off in his 1976 Cadillac Eldorado video. #SaveTheLandYachts
Great video. Lots of information.
Ha! My mom's base model NA '07 got the same codes. Replaced them with the cheapest Rockauto parts I could get and they did great. One of the easiest repairs ever.
Common issue, easy cheap fix. Good video.
I really wanted one of these when they came out.
Nice work John, especially getting that nasty brake fluid swapped out, many overlook that.👍
Dude it was so bad that traction control applied the brakes once and they didn’t release. They finally work right after getting bled! Plus new brake fluid feels amazing 🍻
I used the duralast from autozone in my hhr ss. I have about 20k on that sensor, no issues yet. Even easier to change than the sky/solstice set up.
cant believe that thing is even a saturn. im sitting here with my saturn sl1... this sky redline is a whole new world
Thanks man, yuo är really positive, that's nice!
Nice ride!
Thanks Rod! 💪
Glad it was an easy fix.
Wow, what an easy fix.
Love the Sky you need to put a LS in it.
I keep 4 of each of those solenoids in stock at any given time. The 2.0 and 2.4 are always running through them .
That's one sweet Opel.
2010 sky. 1 of 8 built. I sat in all 8. Remember this car.
I love how auto parts store claim they can only hold a part for a minimum amount of time...
How many people are going to come looking for a obscure part for a equally obscure car at any given time?
Conversely, if the part is "held" and is the last one but a customer walks in wanting it...
It's 010 and 011 you're a god damn gm wizard, harry!!!
Honestly vvt solenoid codes can usually be fixed just by cleaning the small filters on the solenoid usually they are just clogged and havent actually failed
Changed these in my old vvt 2.2 ecotec and now I have a solstice gxp and sounds just like yours when you drive lol the whining noise
Amber, the Kapa cars ( Sky and Solstice) BEAT the pants off the Miata on road race courses in SCCA racing events!
Good to hear! Makes me love my sky even more.
Looks like its real easy to work on. Guarantee if it were a german car, that actuator would have been buried behind the timing cover or some such nonsense and required you to take the whole front of the engine apart.
Great video
I am intrigued by your scan tool . I have some scanners and I have CAT ET for heavy equipment. How reliable is this thing and where do you get it to try it. Thanks John
I always liked those cars
Come on I would like to see more videos of the Fiero. I also wish I had the money to buy it from you. I really need a great gas saver.
We usually change the,oil first, clear the code and see if it comes, back. Dirty oil will cause both codes.
The oil was changed on this Thursday, I probably should've cleared the code and ran it through a drive cycle 💪
Ok i know we see those codes alot and sometimes its just diryy oil but they do tend to fail
Wow I really want this car.
another win with this sky.
Sometimes if the engine has lots of sludge it will make them go bad quickly after replacing them. It may need an engine flush as well.
what about the Caddy XLR? its a drop top? Infiniti G37/Q50, etc
Nice work, but can you make the video closer where are you working in the solenoid
Really common issues on Ecotec motors. GM has a TBS and updated solenoids for this issue. Time for intake, turbo back exhaust, some tuning amd more boost. Fun cars to drive but I am not a Saturn or GM compact guy.
lol back in 2016 i bought a pontiac solstice gxp for 4k and the first issue i had with it almost immediately was those solenoids
I wanna buy this car but no the Redline version, does the car still having parts, is cheap to maintain monthly?
"All you need is a 10mm..." Man...guess I can't do the project then.
😂😂😂
Same thing on my HHR SS. Delco all the way.
can you spell the name of the grease you used on the seals for the convertible top to stop the squeeking ... thanks in advance
Just to remark to everyone who is admonishing aftermarket part suppliers / manufacturers like Dorman all I can say is it's a $4,000 used car that doesnt always need new old stock parts.
I dont recall if he get lifetime or limited lifetime warranty or nothing. It really doesnt matter. It ain't your money.
For myself I tend to stick with the AC Delco or Motorcraft level of replacement parts unless it's a GM/Ford only replacement part that I cant get. Also the car needs to be worth it for me to spend the $$ on it.
Beleive me those GM wheel hubs in the 2000s suck and still continue to go bad.
Exactly, I buy whatever is in stock preferably with the lifetime warranty. I'm gonna laugh when this solenoid lasts 50,000 miles 🍻(at least those wheel hubs are only $80-120, change enough of them)
@@WatchJRGo I've used these actuators and they're not as good as the Genuine GM part...I have nothing against Dorman. .. but with this particular fix I have truly noticed the difference in these particular parts
Which scanner do u have I’m looking to buy one which do u recommend
I noticed you said you had a hard time cleaning the brake dust off of the rims. Let me know if you're interested in a way where you can just wipe it off.
its a beauty
Weird flex but ok with the Siri activated garage door
Quite literally the best thing ever when on bikes.
That is a cool car, and not many of them were made. Only 35,000 were built before the end of Saturn, and of those, only 11,867 were built were Redlines. Of those built, less than half were manual so at best 5000 of those cars were built. It is actually a pretty rare car so in pristine condition is worth quite a bit more than $4000.
Avoid Dorman! I've had 3 or 4 parts (all I ever bought) fail immediately. Spent the extra bucks for OEM replacement.
hi. do the exhaust solenoid and the intake solenoid have different colors? how do you know which is which?
I was recently looking for a sports car. I love the look of the Sky but found the engine was a problem. So I got a Miata NC instead
Do a video of your automated house.
You might put that thing on a lift and check the rearend for a leak out of the vent
Where did you get those nice floor cabinets behind you?
I prefer the look of the VX220 atleast it has a E-type style opening hood
Is the intake and the exhaust sensor the different or are they interchangable?
The HHRSS does not have that blanket. It's really loud when running and hood is open. Sounds like a huge valve tick. It's ok tho as it was like that as new.. I bought it new....
Just a note that some closeups to what you're working on would help. Otherwise great vid
what do you think about the obd reader?
Hi there l have one question. My sky 2009 have not eny check engine but this car shake to much. Can you help me
Smart guy
Replace both solenoids and change the oil with the correct weight and you should be golden for miles.
I think the Pontiac looks better on the outside but the Saturn has a nicer interior.
I sold five of those last week.
Well this happened to me a while back, thing is does anyone know the part number for the ORIGINAL part? Also i got P0010 not P0011 so which should i replace? Thanks.
What year and how many miles on this car?
What kind of grease?
Looking for the crawler videos ! Or did you shitcan that project ? Nice car for 4 grand !
Haven’t even got call back from the machine shop yet. I was expecting a week turn but we’re way past that now 🍻
How do you find deals like you do ? I guess some people have a gift for that !
How bad does that top leak?
How much was the part?
What kind of grease did you say you used on the weather stripping?
Shin Etsu, it’s great! amzn.to/2HjKMlQ
You should put a ls motor in it
What is the exact name of the software you use for your OBD II unit? I heard you say Dashboard, but there are a lot of packages named that.
Thank you.
It’s called Dashcommand also a lot of people like Torque 🤙
Thank you. I have Torque, but the interface you showed looked more flexible.
Shanutchu grease?? Could you please help me with the correct spelling so I can order some? Thanks!
Shin-Etsu
Ask for the cargill discount at oreilly, they have a deal with them and our local store never asks for any proof that you work there...
Kind of says something about the doorman quality when the bolt isn't even the same size as the OEM Bolt you know if it was from another company it would be the same size bolt
You were supposed to oil up the new solenoid and o ring.
You forgot to coat the accuator in oil. It helps seat it...
Friends don’t let friends buy Dorman.
Did u detail your face?
More Amber!
What knife do you carry?
Kershaw Volt II amzn.to/2Eqc8Wr
