Margery C. Carlson Google Doodle

This was an assignment for my Advertising Illustration class last semester--make a Google Doodle!
I chose to highlight an amazing botanist, Dr. Margery C. Carlson. Born in Illinois in 1892, she earned her PhD and became the first female professor at Northwestern University. Carlson’s specialty was rare plant species of Central America, and on research expeditions she traveled with her life partner Kate Staley around Mexico in their yellow truck (which they named “El Caracol” because they lived out of it like a snail). She continued her traveling research into her 60s, and when she died at age 92 she had discovered 15 new species.
