Insignia vibrating or buzzing Solenoid Fix

- After researching the problem it turns out it’s the vacuum solenoid that controls the turbos boost.
It can be tested as faulty by switching off the engine then ‘twanging’ the bonnet release catch in the engine bay. The faulty solenoid basically does a big fart!
Vauxhall were aware of the problem and issued a service bulletin to fix the problem. It involved buying what looks like a second diaphragm that attached to the faulty solenoid. It also involved bending the thin metal pipe that went to the turbo. It was obviously a ‘work around’ fix whilst they developed a new solenoid. Once the new solenoid was available they discontinued the ‘work around’ spare part.
When I phoned Vauxhall about the ‘work around’ part, they confirmed that it wasn’t available anymore along with the old solenoid part. They had he new upgraded solenoid but wanted £74 inc VAT for the part so I decided to have a shop around.
Don’t go on eBay as there are a lot of the older solenoids being sold as the new one. Watch my video to see what the difference is. I bought my replacement solenoid from AUTOVAUX for £47.34 plus shipping. Link at the end of the description.
It’s very easy to remove the old solenoid. Disconnect the vacuum pipes making a note of which connection went where. If you forget then just remember the hose connected to the metal pipe goes into the bottom part of the solenoid.
Disconnect the wiring harness and then undo the two 10mm nuts.
Fitting is the reverse of removal.

Great advice regards the part numbers thanks !
Thanks this helped me so much, and it only took 5 mins to change!
nice video. it helped me. as I already bought a part and luncily it exactly match the new model part number as you advised in your video
Where did you get part from I can not find one
I know this is an old video, but do you know what effect it would have if you fitted the updated part into a system that already had the dealer "fix" fitted?
I had the same issue, so I replaced the buzzing unit for the updated unit, and it solved the problem.
But now it's experiencing flat spots and a DPF warning. After some research it could be a split in the boost hose, or the solenoid has failed again.
After checking to see if the dealer "fix" had been carried out, I couldn't see it anywhere near the solenoid. However, much further along the vacuum hose, there does appear to be something that matches the image in the manufacturers "fix" fitted.
So assuming the fix from Vauxhall was carried out, added to the updated solenoid fitted by me, could this be the cause of my issues?
Hia, we've had ours changed twice in as many years, after just checking under the bonnet looks like we've got the new one, which has just started to make the drone noise, and therefore we are expecting to change it again, ours seems to be happening yearly, will the additional vacuum reservoir with the new solenoid possibly cure this problem, cheers, Mark
I ordered and changed the valve with the upgraded one(pierburg) and after about 2 years it seems like the problem reappeared..I think I ll put the vacuum reservoir this time.
Had anyone else had an issue with the updated part?
Thanks
Sorry for the stupid question but i get this humming noise that tends to happen more when its warmer and it stays constant unless i dip the clutch and rev the engine or put my foot down to accelerate but i dont get any other noise like in the video there. I have an Astra J GTC with the 2.0 165cdti. Also what is this solenoid for? What is its function? Thank you
hello , first clean selenoid valve with brake clean spray then dry it. Last step ; Use silicone lubricate spray into 3 hole, then it stop farting sound.
Hi Innes do you have the Pierburg ( solenoid manufacturer) part No as opposed to the Vauxhall/Opel one
Mick Bourne my wife has the car but when I get the chance I’ll have a look and see if it’s stamped on the part
Innes MacLean thanks
Maybe a daft question, but do all insignias have the digital speedometer? And how do I get it up
On my 2013 you press the left hand stalk button on the end and it cycles through, think the 2nd screen shows speed, mpg etc
Hi did you get any dtc codes or loss of power when this happened?
Hi, no it was just the noise. When I had a Vectra I got error codes because the vacuum pipes were prone to getting nicks in them and letting the vacuum out. If you’re getting error codes regarding vacuum pipes I would replace them. I bought silicone hoses of eBay. Just measure the internal diameter of the current hose and replace with the same. That’s if you’re getting vacuum related error codes.
Is this just a straight swap or do the pipes need to be bent to allow the new part to be fitted ?
Paul Wright it’s a straight swap. Pipe bending only needs to be done if you’re fitting the Vauxhall’s ‘fix’ part which I mention in the video.
Nice Video - I'm getting the "groans/vibrations" particularly around 65mph - was this similar for you?
Calum Kinghorn yes same but I could also hear it at most speeds when cruising and not accelerating.
Calum Kinghorn yeah you can notice it at that speed as revs are low and the cabin is quieter then when you’re accelerating
Hey there, I’ve started to have an issue with mine also. The vac line seems to keep popping off the valve, never done it in the 4years of having the car. The other day it was 3 times it’s came off after going to a couple of shops. I’ve tie wrapped it in place for now. Could this need changing also as I say never an issue until now.
Rlait what looks worn? The rubber hose or the connector on the end of the solenoid? Maybe try ordering a replacement rubber hose. Just get silicone ones of eBay and cut to length. You’ll need to check the inner diameter of the hose to make sure you get the right one.
Innes MacLean nothing looks worn but 2bh there is nothing to grip? I mean the hose comes off the thin silver pipe, the rubber remains on the solenoid.
Rlait can you cable tie it on. The runner must be perished if it can’t hold onto the metal pipe
Innes MacLean yea I pushed the small metal pipe back into the rubber hose then I put 2 small tie wraps around the rubber hose. Seems to be holding now.
I could not Find it on my car where is it ? Anoyones know? 2016 insigna 2.0 diesels 170hp
If this solenoid is working should it still buzz or should it be silent
gumzy1985 no it shouldn’t be buzzing if you have replaced it with a new one. Have you also tried the bonnet latch trick I showed in the video?
I haven't replaced it yet I'm getting this noise when doing the bonnet trick.im getting most vibration from the drivers side in the engine bay
I am about to change my third upgraded wastegate solenoid , in the last 18mth.
don't think they sorted the problem.
Any ideas what else could be causing the problem please.
Take care.
Sketcher 68 did you buy from Vauxhall? If so get it swapped on warranty, is it definitely the right part as I noticed eBay sellers were selling the older part with the new number. The shake of the diaphragm should tell you this.
@@innesmaclean21 i bought the first one , Vauxhall replaced it with a new one under warranty. That one went wrong within 6mth but they wouldn't replace the second one because it was only covered by the warranty on the date of the perches of the first one, which was just over a year old. So I had to pay another £76 .
Sketcher 68 that sounds like a get out of jail clause to me. They should honour the 12m with the new part cheeky sods. Was it the right diaphragm?
@@sketcher68 hi what symptoms did you have with a faulty solenoid? I’m getting overboost but think turbo vanes are sticking again bee turbo only 8month old.
If you flick the latch and it doesnt make the vibration noise does that mean it doesnt need replaced?
KingGamer it’s usually a give away sign that it’s not working properly. It’s not very scientific though. If you continue my get that droan noise then it may we’ll be worth changing anyway.
KingGamer just roads to my last message. Run the engine first so the pressure gets around the system, switch off and then flick it
Just replaced mine mooing sound fronm old one when i turned my ignition off moooo just replaced with upgrade
Do you really have to rev these engines cold like that?
No you don’t
Does the new valve need to be coded in after removing the old one .
daveraffy no there’s no coding. It’s just a straight swap over 👍
@@innesmaclean21 cheers mate thanks for reply , how much was new valve if you don't mind me asking .
@@daveraffy Itd was £58. Stay away from ebay as alot of the old shape solenoids are being advertised with the new part number. The easiest way to tell them apart though is by the shape. The old one has the square diaphragm and the new one is circular (as demo'd in the video). I got mune fropm autvox www.autovaux.co.uk/55575611-turbocharger-vacuum-sensor-as55575611
