  • 1984, the year of many interests and fears for Americans, from fears of a nuclear attack still remaining to a love-hate relationship with consumerism, American films explored teenage life in all its aspects. Night of the Comet takes the idea of what if two teenage girls were the only survivors after the passing of a comet turned everyone to sand. It’s a post-apocalyptic world, and no one is safe, really. Today we look into Night Of The Comet!

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: What Happened To This Horror Movie?

One thing I rarely see mentioned about this film and it's popularity is with the marketing and timing. This film was released at the end of 1984. I was just a young kid but I still remember the anticipation of the real Halley's comet on the way to arrive in 1986. Talk of the real comet was in our science class and on television. So in 1985 Night of the Comet was big. Me and my brother watched it so many times. Then we got to see Halley's comet too, and thankfully we did not turn to dust.

The writing was particularly good in this film. One of my favorite parts was when Kelli Maroney's character is recalling how one of her friends was flunking algebra and trying to keep her parents from finding out. The way she broke down realizing her friend was gone and how something that can be important at the time becomes trivial was brilliant. It's a shame she isn't better known.

Didn’t know the name and thought of it often growing up. Discovered it again in 2015 when someone uploaded the whole film to RUclips. It was exactly as I remembered. You are about a year older than I am, so I remember what you are talking about as well as the age context. It's funny, growing up in the 80's, we had no idea how amazing this particular time period was, because it is all we knew. We didn't know how awesome it was until things started to go to shit in the early 90s or maybe later for some. I was 5 in 1980, I was 14 in 1989, these years I remember well and with much fondness. Every year had amazing movies and music, tv seasons were long (22ep) and it was of a far higher quality, morals were still taught, and kids were still disciplined at school and at home. I could go outside to play at 7:30am and come home, when I heard my mother yelling my name (that sound traveled like a fucking mile) for dinner. Summers were amazing.
My God, if I die and can do it all again, that would be just fine by me.

It is quintessential 80's but instead of detracting from its appeal it only heightens it. The two female leads were also great in it. Katherine Mary Stewart was fairly well known in the 80's but both actors should have had much bigger careers than they did. I love that this movie is finally available again. Both factors that probably help the movie stick into our brains, even as grown men 35+ years later. As for the movie itself, I think it was simply brilliant for it's time, especially the feeling of post-apocalyptic desolation it gave you. Everyone liked to explore an empty mall on a Tuesday too. ;) However, I always thought there could have been a bit more radiation mutants or zombies in the movie. The dudes at the mall were kinda just like mutant jokers with sunglasses on, which was a little dumb. Other than that, I'd still give everything else an 8/10.. well done.

This film is so underrated! I remember me and my brother walking to video spectrum and going through the bins looking for scary movies. We came across this gem and I’ll still rewatch it to this day. Definitely give it a try.

I was living in México and my dad hired cable TV in 1988. One of the first movies I watched then was this one, I was 8 years old and it blew my mind.

I saw this on cable back in 1985. It was cool and scary at the same time. Actually, Sharon punched Kelli in the face. The mall employees that kidnap the sisters were creepy. The two little kids were annoying.

I have always loved this film ever since I saw it shortly after it first came out. I have watched it more times over the years than I can begin to remember. I actually rewatched it a few weeks ago when I rediscovered it on Tubi; it totally stands the test of time. I was thrilled to see this channel’s glowing review, which reaffirmed my memories of this wonderful classic (in my opinion). I would definitely recommend this film to viewers, young and old, looking for a totally enjoyable film experience. And YES!, the music is awesome.

I was 8 in August of 1984 and I remember that being the first summer I could see movies on my own. Ghostbusters blew me away. My father was not one for censorship, and loved all the 80s slashers. I loved this movie, mostly because it has Sci-Fi/Horror elements. I had never seen anything like it and when it his endless rotation on HBO sometime in 85/86 I watched it every-time I could. It had the strong, female leads without the gratuitous nudity. Creepy zombies that could talk and not just eat you. But the scariest parts were the empty shots. I had just seen “The Day After” and it was like the Comet atom-bombed LA without destroying the buildings.
These scenes in the Radio Station were awesome. I always thought this was a criminally underrated movie. I am glad to hear it such a success at the theater.
