    My Canon mx492 has done a barely acceptable job for my home needs and prototyping for my printing of cards for games that I am designing; however, my new laptop refuses to communicate with the printer and I never got the wifi functions to work with my Canon, so I am looking to replace it with a new printer now. I appreciate your comparison review and this specialized review, which has given me the confidence to drop the cash on this printer for the upgrade. Thank you!

      @anthonython1413 night and day difference for my needs. The connectivity JUST WORKS per my experience. Computer sees the printer, printer sees the computer, they shake hands and play nice. As for printing on specialty paper, it has done well so far with thicker card stock but I always am careful to do a test print or two because it seems like I need to dial in the definition or contrast randomly from one project to the next, but I don't really think that is the printers fault. Short answer, I would totally buy it again given the need

    Nice review. Thank you. I am looking at printers for my wife and this one looks good. I have a question. When printing a multi-page document, will this printer do automatic duplex printing? In my mind, this means printing 2-sided by itself without manual intervention. If I have to print one side and then flip and refeed the pages I do not consider that auto-duplex. Some companies advertise their printers as a duplex but require the flip and refeed technique!?! The waste ink cartridge sounds weird; I never heard of anything like that. Are there other Epson printers that don't require that, or how do you handle that? Thanks again.

    Hi, I am a UK viewer of your video, which is very helpful. As you appear to be knowledgeable about printers, do you have any advice on my dilemma. I am looking at the XP7100, the XP8700 and the Canon PIXMA TS8350. In the UK the Canon sells out frequently, but the reviews on all 3 printers are mixed. I know there is no perfect printer, but of the 3 , which would you recommend. The fact that you have the XP7100 probably answers the question. Many thanks Terry Davis

    Nice printer as I am replacing my 12 years old Artisan 810, but the XP 7100 scans are 'skewed', meaning the pages are about 10% crooked and somewhat distorted (stretched/pulled from the top right corner and up). Using the ADF resulting much worse. All my pages are crooked - like someone is raising their left eyebrow. This is a big deal to me since I do more scans than print. Hope this is an isolated case and not a design defect. Nonetheless I returned the one I purchased. Will try another one when the price is right

    You mentioned faxing in the start of the vid. I got this to replace a XP-810 that has the print pad error (that's OK it's old). But this new one does not have built in fax from what I read (did not unbox yet), so I plan to scan my docs into a PC and then use a USB to phone line fax modem for the few occasions when I need to fax. Is that what you meant at 1:14 "if I want it to fax I can do that also"? Thanks.

    • @pianoplayer8226
      @pianoplayer8226 2 года назад

      Just an update to my own comment. I did pickup a USB fax modem and tested it out with Windows 10 fax and scan, after scanning in a document from XP-810 (still did not unbox my new XP-7100). I found the fax and scan program VERY awkward to use, very restrictive on file type(.tif), so much so that I am going to hang on to my XP-810 for fax sending only, even after I unbox my new XP-7100. Fortunately I have an unused telephone jack in another room my house and a space to put the printer for fax only use.

    • @pianoplayer8226
      @pianoplayer8226 Год назад

      Another update the 810 finally died and would not even allow faxing. So I leaned how use the Startech fax modem with PC and scanning with the new printer. Works just fine as long as you save as .tiff file..

      The part of the door that flips open is also tray two. In other words, you must slightly lift the printer up from the bottom and gently pull out the tray. It will not pull out unless you lift (tilt) up the printer from the bottom. In other words, the weight of the printer rests on the bottom of tray two - which will not come out unless you physically lift the printer up.
      I how this helps you. I had the same problem; and I just bought this printer a few days ago, myself.
      Helpful note/hint:
      Also, FIRST, pull out tray one; then you can more easily see and grab tray two.

    • @evandrinks
      @evandrinks  3 года назад +5

      I think the photos it produces are nice for occasional home use photo printing. When comparing the quality to 6 color models, there is a noticeable difference. My recommendation would be to consider the Epson Expression Photo XP-8600, XP-970, or HD XP-15000. I use both the XP-970 and XP-15000 and the photo quality is substantially better than this model. I have not personally used the XP-8600 but would expect similar results. Epson currently has the XP-8600 in their clearance center if you are willing to buy a refurbished unit. For landscapes, you will notice better light tones, like light blues and greens with the XP-8600 or XP-970.

    • @evandrinks
      @evandrinks  3 года назад +2

      @@ealmihraby This printer would be my #1 choice. However, it cannot use a continuous ink system. If you wanted higher quality photos, then an XP-8600 would be a slightly better choice. It does not have an auto document feeder, it can’t fax, and will not work with a continuous ink system. If you want to go for an XP-7100 then now is a great time to (if you live in the US). Epson US currently has some refurbished units in their clearance center for only $80 rather than the regular $200 for a new printer. The refurbished printers also usually include XL ink cartridges rather than the “Initial” cartridges. What I do is use the original inks to print a photograph that has a variety of strong colours when I first get the printer and after those inks have run out, I install compatible inks, I then do a print of the same picture and then compare how they look, I have never been disappointed with the compatible ink picture, there really has been no difference, except in the cost of the genuine ones. • @evandrinks
      @evandrinks  Год назад

      So, if you are looking for a dedicated photo printer that does not need to scan or copy, then there are several options that I would definitely consider. In certain countries outside the United States, the Epson L805 is offered by Epson, and I would highly recommend it. I have one, and it does a fabulous job of printing photos quickly and at a great quality. If the Epson L805 is not offered where you live, then I would consider either the Epson XP-970 or the Canon IP8720 which both print larger sizes compared to the L805. The Canon can print larger photos, but the Epson has other advantages. The Epson features a touchscreen, and also utilizes a maintenance tank for waste ink. If the Epson's maintenance box fills up with ink, then the box can be easily swapped out. The Canon would need to be sent out for servicing. I generally think the Epson would last at least a little bit longer than the Canon, but Canon's IP8720 is usually a little bit cheaper. Have a great rest of your day!

    Problem is, Epson tried to squeeze far too many features into this printer, making it unnecessarily complicated to use. Even the paper trays are annoyingly troublesome, besides being cheap and flimsy. It takes a lot of tweaking in the preferences boxes to get anywhere NEAR the vibrant color and crisp black text that HP delivers naturally. Also, it's very difficult getting the correct black ink cartridges. Standard capacity black cartridge (not 410 XL) cannot be loaded on this printer, even though they sell them to you! I've owned my XP 7100 for about five months now, and it seems to me they let this one out of the gate before getting all the bugs out. This is my first venture with any printer other than HP. For pro quality prints, they have never been surpassed. I'll never stray again.

      This printer definitely does have many features, and I can see how it may be complicated to figure out. Standard capacity 410 cartridges can be used for black. I think you might be confusing the large pigment black with the smaller photo black. They are two separate inks. Traditionally with Epson printers, you often have to complete alignments when setting it up, but you have more control over the process compared to HP. Some HP printers have auto alignment, but sometimes they don’t do the best job.

      @@evandrinks We're not trying to fly to the moon here. Changing ink cartridges should not be, and has never been confusing, except with Epson. Standard capacity black ink cartridges DO NOT fit in the BK ink (NOT PBK) slot, which ONLY accommodates double capacity = 410BK XL. This is a major grievance and complained about consistently on many forums across the Web. A printer's job is to simply PRINT, do it well and quickly. It should not need to be pampered, coaxed or "understood." The fact that the XP 7100 has a 328 PAGE PDF USER'S GUIDE (!!!) attests to the fact that it is the end product of some over zealous and confused minds.

      When I insert a thumb drive into the printer's USB port the date stamp is always 2017. Even with the current driver update I have not been able to locate the date setting to enter the current date when the pdf scan is saved to the file. Have you encountered the same problem?

      @@texteacher7706 Hi. Wish I could help, but I have never used a USB drive with this printer. I keep things as simple as possible and control everything from my desktop computer. Hopefully, there's help to be found somewhere in the 328 page User's Guide. Best of luck to you!

      While I like the HP laser printers, I never had any luck with the HP inkjet printer. I always found the HP inkjets to be awkwardly designed and unreliable. I love EPSON inkjets - I only have to replace them when I am tempted to upgrade for new features.

    I have this printer and hate it. Loses wi-fi a lot. Also expensive ink and if it starts to dry up you can't print, even in black. Have to replace ink at least twice a year. Going to go mega tank or eco tank. Done with cartridges. Just FYI

    I own this printer. I will never buy an Epson product again. I'm out of yellow ink today. Actually I'm not it is clearly half full but the chip on the ink cartridge says I need more so it will not print... not even black. Yes I clicked black only, yes I changed it to black only in preferences ect.. read all the Faqs. It used to let you but since last firmware update it will not. Scam company. Essentially disables itself for no reason and keep popping up links to buy ink.

    This printer is useless if you are out of color ink and just want to print in black!

    • @evandrinks
      @evandrinks  2 года назад +1

      It is true that you will not be able to print at all if one color runs out. That will happen on most inkjet printers, besides some printers from Canon and HP that use integrated printhead cartridges. The printer does not allow for printing as the printhead could be damaged if one color is out of ink. I can definitely understand your frustration.

    I was disappointed to see you mock, the U.S.Postal Service and its hard-working employees. I was a letter carrier for 5 years during hot, humid summers, and chilling cold winters in Michigan. I suggest you get to know your letter carrier and those who work in the post office nearest you. You may want to modify or retract your silly video.

      Dear Tim,
      I apologize for how I conveyed my opinion on USPS. I have retracted the video I created as I understand your concerns, and I do not feel that it conveys my message in the right manner.
      Thank you for voicing your concerns,

    Top notch printing quality but has mechanical issues. Half the time the control module that pops out will not return. Its a real pain. Also drops wifi connection from time to time. That may just be my network.
