Thank you for spending the entire first half encouraging to hold onto plastic pots. The plant nursery I was raised on was on the land we lived. We closed the nursery a few years ago, but we still love growing all types of plants and use the plastic pots from when we began the nursery almost 25 years ago. If they are kept in shade they can last a lifetime. If plastic were easing to fall apart it wouldn’t be such a nuisance for the environment. And btw my parents made it a point to buy used pots from older nurseries so most of our pots were already used from the get go. And we raised red mangroves predominately, which need to grow in pots submerged in water. The plastic pots were in murky water 24 hours a day for years and they are still ready for the next planting. And the day my mom and pops sell their home knowing them they will find a nursery or someone too pass all the pots too use again. Thanks for promoting the earth in such a great and comprehensive way for the masses.
I like the roots growing out all over the place. I think it makes the plants look interesting. They seem to like to cling to the old fashioned unpainted clay pots.
I use a metal hanging basket. line it with fly wire(plastic) hang the orchid upside down through the holes of the basket after making a hole in the mesh then fill the basket with a good orchid mix. All my orchids have gone crazy growing this way. They get heaps of aerial roots as well as roots through the potting mix.
Hi Danny. Great topic. I personally cover the ventilation hole when I see that root is aiming to the hole and when it passes I open it again. But of course I have only 50 orchids😂
Most of the orchids are epiphytes, very few are terrestrials. Epiphytes have aerial roots and in their natural habitat, they receive their nourishment from moist air while some roots hold on to the trees. When we grow them in pots, it is their natural tendency to send the roots all around while some may be clinging to the sides of the pots. I would closely examine those roots and if they appear too dry, I would snip them off without harming the plant. It is in their nature, I would leave them alone as long as they appear healthy.
I know this comment is a year old, but I have the same issue and I read a comment where someone said they use an empty glue gun to make holes. maybe not the best idea but worth a shot
New to all of this but I find it simply fascinating! In my estimation the roots are as unique as the flowers. Had my first orchid for a year and just bought a second one. Did my first repot the other day and from this video I can see I did a couple things wrong. Fingers crossed that they survive. I simply love your channel and have learned sooooo much. My thanks 😊

The new one I bought was so sick looking in the M&S that I couldn't stop myself and got it and also made a complaint in the shop about how they were treating their flowers. You said that you're not going to save the Paraphalaenopsis' pot because of the root, but there's a possibility to get rid of the plastic that may damage the root, so you're going to have a bigger hole at the bottom of the pot. But it's still saveable 😃😃 almost zero waste! Thanks for your work Danny ❤️
Washing my plastic pots in the dishwasher (top shelf) cleans and disinfects them for reuse. You can use a bleach solution for disinfection also, but the pot or tool must first be clean!

Hi MissOrchidGirl, I have watched nearly all your videos on vandas, but I cannot find the answer to my 2nd question so I would like some advice. I got a vascostylis plant about a month ago and we haven't had many sunny days so it hasn't grown much. I water it by soaking it's roots every 3 days and leave it to hang dry but I don't see any new root tips growing in the last month. I was wondering what more can I do to stimulate root growth? I also recently noticed a brown spot with a yellow area around it on 2 of the new leaves that are still growing. It seems to be close to the crown. I'm not sure if it's crown rot or not as I haven't dunked the whole plant into water before. Can you guess what it might be? What should I do to prevent it from spreading?

Re: the “superglue”, cyanoacrylates (the type of glue) is actually water soluble, so I’m not convinced it’s great for sealing the ends of the roots. Quick tip: if you ever accident glue your fingers together when using superglue, just put your fingers under running water and they will come right apart. Water will dissolve the glue.
Hi, think you are confusing it with some other type of glue 😋 cyanoacrylate is definitely not soluble in water, it actually becomes solid, it is used a lot in aquarium scaping and it definitely does NOT come off your fingers (or fake nails lol) with water. I would tell you to try it to convince yourself, but maybe don't! Just google it 😁
@@MissOrchidGirl I’ve worked with glue extensively at my job (I’m an engineer) and we had a product recall due to a cyanacrylate being used in a water based application and the parts kept falling off. I had to replace it with a 2-part epoxy. The phrase “Superglue” gets used a ton by people who aren’t familiar with adhesives and they are usually referring to cyanacrylates, but sometimes they mean epoxies (like some Gorilla glues). There may be different classes of cyanaoacrylates, and perhaps our medical grade version (that failed) was different. 🤷🏼♀️
No no, not epoxy, cyanoacrylate. It gets solid and brittle under water, but does NOT dissolve. Never stick your fingers together with that stuff, it's a nightmare! If no force is applied on it at all, it stays bonded like that in water indefinitely. A few of my orchids have come in big plastic pots but when I got to repot them after initially buying them they usually have a small (Shot glass sized) mesh plastic pot in the middle of the moss on the base of the orchid center. Usually the roots grow around the mesh pot. Once I had an orchid with roots growing through the mesh pot. I had to cut the roots because the roots that had grown through the pot were suffering from root rot. Because the mesh pot had centered all the water where it was placed. I usually cut the pot off if it's stuck on the orchid. Sometimes it just falls off after I remove the old potting medium.

Yes, the seedling plug (i.e. the clump of condensed old medium in the centre) often has a mesh pot around it. When the nurseries pot the orchids into bigger pots as they grow, they obviously don't bother removing the old seedling medium and the mesh pot first, they just put new medium around it...

I have a phelonaphis orchid and it has a lot of Arenal roots. It is in a ceramic pot with a lot of holes. What is the best way to get it out of the pot without harming the roots? Do you recommend this kind of pots.

I have a big phal with a flower spike and a branch off that spike, and I was waiting for the last two flowers to drop on the branch off the main spike so i could trim it all the way down, then that branch started growing another branch! it was two inches long before i even noticed, but the other branch is almost completely empty now, and the main spike is also bare of flowers. can i trim the empty spike to a node above where the first branch grows out? or will that kill the new branch growing off the old branch? sorry if it's a little confusing!
If you mean the water that contains minerals and is selled in bottles for human consumption it is not so good for orchids. There are unnecessary minerals in that water which can bild up and lead to root burn. You should use rainwater, osmosis water or distilled water for your orchids and use some fertiliser every few weeks :)
So I saw a video you posted in 2016 about clay pots...does this video mean that you now use plastic pots again for your orchids? If so why did you switch back? New to orchids here.

Hi, I'm not Danny but I think I can answer your question You can leave the roots outside the pot or put them inside, it's just your preference. But beware that the roots outside are aerial roots, so they are used to dryness and a very airy environment. If you put them inside the pot, and water regularly, those roots might be in shock because they never experienced this kind of wet environment before, which can eventually lead to them dying off. But they might also adjust to the new environment. All in all, I'd say it's more safe to leave them outside, but if your orchid doesn't have a ton of roots inside the pot, or you simply want to put the roots inside, just try it!
I have an orchid with pseudo bulbs but instead of growing bulbs horizontally it’s growing vertically. So all the roots never reach the pot or media. It dries out really fast. How do you keep this from happening. I divided the orchid so it would fit in the pot again.

I repotted my phalaenopsis orchids for the first time, some I've had for years. I bought 4 inch pots and orchid soil. They had compressed sphagnum moss in their roots and two had those tiny pots you don't like. I had one losing 3 leaves, I'll see how it's doing now. My question : I have one that even in a 4 inch pot has about 6 inches of arial roots up the stem and 7 leaves at the top, so I ordered 5 and 6 inch pots now, how high can I sink the plant into the pot if I put it in an even bigger pot? Will it kill it to bury the stem? Is it bad to change pot twice? Some videos say don't touch the roots you'll kill it, others say chop away like a lunatic it's fine so I'm very confused and no one adresses this long stem business 6 inches full of arial roots😂 before the leaves, it almost looks like a 🌴 palm tree. They were all consistent flowerer so now I wait.........and hope.
hey, i have an star orchid thing xD i cant figure out what it is. i saw some bulb orchids in ur videos, but for me they all look quite similar. mine has very thin roots and has 3 of this bulb things, and where the blooms where on, the stick is totally dry. it had star like blooms in wine red and yellow ish and the pot is very sturdy, but colored and not see through.... so should i repot it to see how it is? its in a mix of tree bark and coconut shell and i thiiink, im not sure, another bulb has a liittle thing at the bottom behind a dry leave that was directly at the bulb, that looks like a new blooming stick (sry i dont know how its called, like the orchid itself xD ) i put the 2 orchids to the bright indirect sunlight in the shower, and the normal white ?phalaenopsis? orchid is blooming again :) just rain water, if the white one is dry and yes. i think thats all info needed xD
Great video! I have a dendrobium latouria in a 6" plastic pot that doesn't have ventilation holes just drainage holes. The roots are growing above the pot and small ones out the bottom. Do I repot it in a larger pot or keep the same size? Thanks for your help in advance.
I just had the same problem and i found out that I need to repot asap as plant overgrown the plastic and in my case all media (moss) was rotten and plant was strugling with nutrition....I also found out that orchird should be repoted from this plastic to propa pot with drainage withing few months of buying( not imidiatly after buying as plant needs to adjust to new environment..still learning about it.
This is slightly off topic, but still about roots. What can I do to stop roots from rotting away after repotting? I don't have this problem with phals or other orchids with larger roots, but I definitely have this problem with oncidium alliance or something like a maxillaria. Any tips? Thanks!
I have a question. The root of my orchid grew below on the drainage hole and the sleeve of the root is removed leaving a thread like root exposed. Should I cut it?
I'm disappointed you would put a chemical on a plant root when it doesn't seem necessary. You say the root seals itself so why the need to put glue on it. Btw, turmeric is a safe sealant. Also the moss holds water and causes root rot, bark drys out faster.

I always try to reuse pots, its much much easier than buying more on you and the environment
A heated nail is a great idea. I was just using sharp scissors to make ventilation slits in the sides...awkward and quite messy! Thanks for the tip

One of my roots pushed its way through one of it's leaves to get out of the pot. It literally tore a hole through itself to spread out.

@@MissOrchidGirl Im actually not using anything special on them. I cant get orchid fertilizer out where i live very easily so Ive been sticking to water. Bark/mulch is the only substrate i can find too so. Thanks so much for getting back to me :)
@@MissOrchidGirl she is growing a SECOND KEIKI and i DONT know why! I have 4 orchids and shes the only one doing this lmao. The first keiki might have been there right as i bought her, its sorta squished between leafs, but the second one is completely new and i dont know what happened. All of my orchids have this stubby leaf problem btw, but their leafs get slightly better by each one they put out.
I have a phelonaphis orchid and it has a lot of Arenal roots. It is in a ceramic pot with a lot of holes. What is the best way to get it out of the pot without harming the roots? Do you recommend this kind of pots.
Hi Dany! I have a big phal with a flower spike and a branch off that spike, and I was waiting for the last two flowers to drop on the branch off the main spike so i could trim it all the way down, then that branch started growing another branch! it was two inches long before i even noticed, but the other branch is almost completely empty now, and the main spike is also bare of flowers. can i trim the empty spike to a node above where the first branch grows out? or will that kill the new branch growing off the old branch? sorry if it's a little confusing!
I personally trimmed the dead upper part of the flowerspike above the branch on a mini phal and I had no problems so I think you can trim it too :)

If you mean the water that contains minerals and is selled in bottles for human consumption it is not so good for orchids.
There are unnecessary minerals in that water which can bild up and lead to root burn.
You should use rainwater, osmosis water or distilled water for your orchids and use some fertiliser every few weeks :)

Hi Dani, thank you for your fantastic tips. I have a Philinopsis Orchid which has started to wobble in the pot. I re-potted a year ago, to a larger pot and the plant was fine. On watering yesterday, I noticed it had a wobble. The roots are beginning to grow over the top, should I re-pot?
I have an orchid with bulbs like one you showed in this video, don’t know what it is but I have had it about 5 years and has no rebloomed since I brought it home. I have other orchids, they bloom every year, just not that one. I fertilize, the leaves are a pretty green, just no roots. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi, I'm not Danny but I think I can answer your question
You can leave the roots outside the pot or put them inside, it's just your preference.
But beware that the roots outside are aerial roots, so they are used to dryness and a very airy environment. If you put them inside the pot, and water regularly, those roots might be in shock because they never experienced this kind of wet environment before, which can eventually lead to them dying off. But they might also adjust to the new environment.
All in all, I'd say it's more safe to leave them outside, but if your orchid doesn't have a ton of roots inside the pot, or you simply want to put the roots inside, just try it!
I have an orchid with pseudo bulbs but instead of growing bulbs horizontally it’s growing vertically. So all the roots never reach the pot or media. It dries out really fast. How do you keep this from happening. I divided the orchid so it would fit in the pot again.

I repotted my phalaenopsis orchids for the first time, some I've had for years.
I bought 4 inch pots and orchid soil. They had compressed sphagnum moss in their roots and two had those tiny pots you don't like.
I had one losing 3 leaves, I'll see how it's doing now.
My question : I have one that even in a 4 inch pot has about 6 inches of arial roots up the stem and 7 leaves at the top, so I ordered 5 and 6 inch pots now, how high can I sink the plant into the pot if I put it in an even bigger pot? Will it kill it to bury the stem? Is it bad to change pot twice?
Some videos say don't touch the roots you'll kill it, others say chop away like a lunatic it's fine so I'm very confused and no one adresses this long stem business 6 inches full of arial roots😂 before the leaves, it almost looks like a 🌴 palm tree.
They were all consistent flowerer so now I wait.........and hope.
hey, i have an star orchid thing xD i cant figure out what it is. i saw some bulb orchids in ur videos, but for me they all look quite similar.
mine has very thin roots and has 3 of this bulb things, and where the blooms where on, the stick is totally dry.
it had star like blooms in wine red and yellow ish
and the pot is very sturdy, but colored and not see through....
so should i repot it to see how it is? its in a mix of tree bark and coconut shell and i thiiink, im not sure, another bulb has a liittle thing at the bottom behind a dry leave that was directly at the bulb, that looks like a new blooming stick (sry i dont know how its called, like the orchid itself xD )
i put the 2 orchids to the bright indirect sunlight in the shower, and the normal white ?phalaenopsis? orchid is blooming again :)

Great video! I have a dendrobium latouria in a 6" plastic pot that doesn't have ventilation holes just drainage holes. The roots are growing above the pot and small ones out the bottom. Do I repot it in a larger pot or keep the same size? Thanks for your help in advance.
I just had the same problem and i found out that I need to repot asap as plant overgrown the plastic and in my case all media (moss) was rotten and plant was strugling with nutrition....I also found out that orchird should be repoted from this plastic to propa pot with drainage withing few months of buying( not imidiatly after buying as plant needs to adjust to new environment..still learning about it.

This is slightly off topic, but still about roots. What can I do to stop roots from rotting away after repotting? I don't have this problem with phals or other orchids with larger roots, but I definitely have this problem with oncidium alliance or something like a maxillaria. Any tips? Thanks!

Hi, let it be for now, sometimes missing velamen will not kill the root. If it dries up you can cut it ☺️

I'm disappointed you would put a chemical on a plant root when it doesn't seem necessary. You say the root seals itself so why the need to put glue on it. Btw, turmeric is a safe sealant. Also the moss holds water and causes root rot, bark drys out faster.
I have some roots with brown dry roots in the middle but then bright firm roots right after. What do you do in this case?
