- Don't throw away your dead dry old orchids. You can bring them back to life. If you happen to have have damaged or sick orchids without crown or leaves al all. This situation when orchids can loose their crown called crown loss and became as a result of many mistakes of orchids care such as crown rot due to overwatering, parasites such a scales, influence of very low below 10 degrees Celsius temperature. In most cases orchids thrown away in to the garbage and not so many people know that there is a chance for orchids to rejuvenate. And monopodial phalenopsis orchids stems can produce keikis on what is left after crown loss. Just investigate your plant before throwing and if damaged orchids still have some healthy roots it has a chance to regrow. #OrchidsCare #orchids #Phalaenopsis #OrchidsForBeginners #PhalaenopsisOrchids #orchidaceae #orchidrepotting #orchidroots #orchidlover #phalenopsis
Aerial roots of the orchids like a roots of other epiphytes don’t really need substrate because they can absorb water and nutrients from the air. Aerial roots covered with sponge like looking tissue-velamen. They also contain chlorophyll and participating in photosynthesis. That fact make leafless orchids keep growing without leaves. Roots aren’t growing into substrate , but rather out of or on the surface of substrate using it just to attach themselves to it as for support. Having this knowledge I created simple way to save damaged, crown-less, leafless orchids.

I was given a very abused orchid and I was about to throw it out when I found this video! She has been in intensive care for a couple months but I think she's going to survive and thrive! Thank you for posting this video.
Did u work?
a moment of silence for all the orchid homies I've thrown out over the years. RIP

🤣 for real!
LOL! me too.
We didn’t know 😭
Guys please watch how I got rid of them successfully:ruclips.net/video/0aioauAQ5uo/видео.html
A followup video showing the orchid that was brought back to life would be very convincing
@Pete The orchid with keiki at the end looks like a different orchid from the beginning which had fewer roots
@@sunflowerhk100 Spot on, that's what I saw.
It works, but in reality, if a person can't keep an established orchid alive, they've got no chance of keeping a keiki alive from the point the plant is at there!
I had a dead vanda throw a keiki cause I hadn't got around to cleaning out the pot & had just left it hanging outside where it had died. Keiki suffered the same fate as the adult did
So, it was not the same orchid.. she was like lying ?
I've made my collection on that.
You put your orchids in mosspital.
🤭
My husband always brought me home orchids (mostly Phals.)from his work after they were done flowering because the plant service they used would throw them away! I got so pissed when he told me that and he started bringing them to me. I got almost all of them to reflower for years. I also go to garden centers and buy the most pathetic looking orchids and african violets and nurse them back to health. Wonderful video!!!❤️
I just tie the to trees and they do great! (Hot, humid climate)
I had an orchid that died from my inexperienced mistakes. First, I almost killed it by overwatering. By the time I got it back to good health, I was too scared to overwater it again, but I believe I ended up killing it by allowing too much time in between watering and it got too dry. I thought it was dead for good after all the leaves dropped, and the roots were all dried hard like sticks. I set it aside because I was going to use it in a terrarium because it made a good dead fallen tree by the little stream. Anyway, I noticed one day there was a tiny leaf popping up from the dead base of the plant, just off to the side. I looked closer and it was a fully formed baby orchid growing, with new tiny roots starting to poke thru. I never watered it, and was careful when misting the terrarium to not get it too wet as I didn't want it to get all floppy and rot. Looks to have gotten just the right amount of moisture from the terrarium and light bits of misting. I couldn't believe it. It was "dead" forever. Like, months. Plants always amaze me.
Thank you so much for this video! Thanks to your guidance I was able to bring my mother-in-law's orchid back from the brink of death (I'm not exaggerating!), and it's been growing new roots and leaves for about 6 months now. But it hasn't produced a flower stalk. It lost its one stalk during its near-death experience; I'd love to see it flower again now that M-I-L has passed away.
My condolences on the passing of your mother in law.
@@Classyflowers Thank you. :-) Can you guide me in getting it to flower (getting it to produce a flower stalk)? Thanks again.
Here the video explaining why orchids do not produce blooms: ruclips.net/video/ZtFlCfeFebQ/видео.html
I have had an orchid for over a year now that refuses to die, no matter the crap it goes through! All the roots died, it got moldy, it got dry, all the leaves fell off. I swear I thought it was dead a dozen times by now. I started propagating it in water, and now it’s finally starting to grow new flowers! I can’t even believe it tbh.
Good I got one she's almost 20 years from my mom she flowers very slow but always alive 👍
I’ve thrown out many healthy orchids and I’m sorry! 😢
I have one that is almost the same, almost ten years, after years last year finally gave me two keikis. Hope soon can see flowers.
I have the same experience with 2 of mine is why I can't believe anyone actually killed an orchid.
How did you propagate in water? You just put the dying orchid in a glass of water?
I am asking, because I have an orchid that is just struggling. It is always on the brink of death and I don't know why? All my other orchids are doing fine. I am now looking for a way to save that struggling orchid and finally get it to be stable 👀
Iv done what you are doing I never new this but iv just regrown the roots new leaf I’m so happy
A friend gave me 2 orchid plants when they were blooming, and I have been watching your videos so I can learn how to grow them right.... I happen to have those 2 glass Vases !!! Exactly like the ones you have!
Fantastic, it looks like I've finally found a real how to grow orchid channel.
I could listen to you talk plant science all day.
How cool! I’m so excited as I watched a tutorial on orchids last spring after the valentine blooms were all done and now I’ve got what I pretty sure are 2 flower spikes coming off of it! It’s my baby and I’m so excited!
How is your orchid doing now? :)
YOU are a Godsend...
I was just now watering all my flowers and saw that an old orchid was looking punnie
I was thinking about letting it go... I will give this a try.
Thank YOU so much for all your great knowledge and sharing this wonderful video.
my orchid got too cold when I was unable to go home from my parents house after lockdown hit, paired with the heating being broken, and she looks absolutely dead but I haven't had the heart to throw her away since I love her so much and I was so sad about her. I'm really hopeful about trying this, thank you so much !!
did it work?
hows it going? We *need* to know!
Can you share the result?
I had one that looked absolutely dead, but I kept watering and moved it out of the very sunny window it had been in, it is now sprouting a tiny leaf.
It would have been nice to see the before and after of the actual orchid, It would help to see the journey.
I once had a miniature orchid sitting on my window sill in my kitchen. Of course, it had beautiful blooms on it. Later, as expected, the flowers died and I cut off the spike. After a while, I pretty much ignored it. Eventually, I decided to throw it away since it had fallen into the sink a couple times, and I had given it up for dead. Luckily, I looked at it before I pitched it, and low and behold, it was starting to grow a very small new leaf. It survived for quite a time after that and grew a few more leaves. Never flowered, but was still really cute. Sometimes, they are tougher than you think.
Cool 😎 I just picked up my second orchid today and it is a miniature
amazing how people can know things like this 🌷👍
Lots of orchids are history under my watch. I cannot get one to live, and I love them.
Cant imagine how many orchids I’ve thrown away😔
Me too,sad
Sadly, to get them to flower again you have to have the right light and plenty of space if you want more than a couple.
There are a few things to remember.
🌊 For watering put them in water so you are bottom watering them.
⛔Do not get the crown wet.
💧Water every 10 to 14 days.
Let it dry well.
🌬Make sure the water gets out, good drainage is crucial.
🌤It does not need direct light.
🏞If you forget any of these remember how and where they grow.
🏔They grow on other trees a d they get good rain two times per month and they don't need soil and they need tree barks because they grow on trees.
🥀When it blooms and the flowers fall off cut the stem right under the last flower and above the next nod so it will shoot out a new stem for blooming.🌹
I don't fertilize mine, because they are not my plants, but I believe you can fertilize them in growing seasons, and for when they are blooming or should bloom you can give them some Orchid or African Violet fertilizer.
Do not stress to get them to bloom, they do it when they want to, and check your house for humidity and temperature. Those are really important.
Paula from Mexico, it is now 5 months. There are two babies, one is starting roots, still very small. The moss isn’t doing well because it doesn’t get direct sun. It gets light from window. Some days I take the plant out and put the vase outside in sun light for maybe half hour, bring it back in and put plants back in.
great idea thanks

Great video! I've been re-obsessed (always loved them since I was little) with orchids (especially phals) recently, and I love finding so many cool orchid people on YT now!! Happy to add you to my watch list :) ✨💚
It’s are so resilient it’s amazing what they can do
Very very informative. I had no idea that a dead orchid could be revived and multiply.
I'm a newbie but it seems orchids are very sensitive, at the same time they're actually very hardy. Never knew I could regrow
they are actually rather hardy, the problem is most people keep them in pots when out in the wild, they use their roots to cling onto trees. i once saw someone who hung a tree branch from their ceiling and had their orchid grow from it, i thought that was really clever and also an interesting addition to their home
@@byggrynsgroet gotcha. I live in philadelphia so the pot has to be it's home. It's doing much better I've got loads of blooms too! Thanks
Yeah, very difficult to grow in such a format in the home and actually be able to provide adequate moisture, depending on the variety
@@jpcreativeimagery it's just an add ice orchid. I've had it for two years and now it's not dormant. I must be doing something ok
@@byggrynsgroet thanks for telling me to do with that giant piece of driftwood.
This was some great information but alas my poor orchids went to file 13 a couple of weeks ago. I hope that I have better luck in the future. Thank you for sharing.
Hi from Western Australia and happy new year 2021. Thanks all of that info. I rescued my neighbours old "dead orchids" he had trown to the tip. Now 1/2 doz folk around our little town share what was once his pride and joy. But never having been an orchid grower mine survive more by good luck than good management so I will check out some more of your sites 🙏💜
Such a professional video and explanation! I've been doing this similarly with Anthurium with quite some success
If using live moss helps them recover, is it also good just to keep them in live moss once they are adult plants?
I grow all my phalaenopsis in a glass vase in best spagum moss available....Very successfully....
@@bevcar9982 Like New Zealand spagnum moss?
Thank you for your advice. I was successful in reviving my dead orchid. I'm curious with the next step is. I assume I replant it in orchid bark?
when I first started getting into Orchids, I'd buy the 'dead/discounted' orchids from places like Home Depot. I only lost one to fungus (and frustration, admittedly) out of a dozen, so it was well worth the time and money. They're surprisingly hardy plants, stubborn, and lovely once you learn to listen to them.
I too entered into orchid growing through specimens sold on clearance at home improvement centers. Just last week I brought home two for $3.00!!! Once they were freed from their packaging and the old media and dead tissue were removed, along with a few days rest, they are already beginning to thrive again. Of course they have both passed through their flowering phase but their leaves are plumping up and their spikes are still healthy.
Of the 22 orchids I have brought home under similar circumstances, only 1 has taken a fatal turn, and that instance was entirely my own fault. I dropped her and her case shattered.... subsequently she developed crown rot in an unseen injury at the base of the crown. Prior to this accident, she was in prime condition.
I’m hoping I can reclaim something from her root ball which still survives.
@@VetsrisAuguste - Spikes? Your orchid has spikes? I have only had a few, but none has been spikey. They have air roots (may have a fancy name that I don’t know of in English) though. Is that what you mean by spikes? Curious... ☺️
@@lottatroublemaker6130
I was referring to the flower spikes (inflorescences) which had faded before I bought these on clearance. They are no longer in bloom as I mentioned above, but they are still quite verdant (the spikes) and the nodes have active bracts so I have left them
alone, opting not to cut them.
It is typical to refer to the inflorescences as “flower spikes” or “spikes” (for short) when discussing orchids in English.
My earlier comment was mostly to do with the general good health of orchids that might otherwise look unhealthy to the untrained eye and not necessarily to do with the overall progress my new Orphan Orchids’ growing cycles. I was tagging onto what had been said by @Lavinia De Mortalium
@@VetsrisAuguste - Thanks a lot, learnt something new about orchids (and English) now! 👏👏👏🤗
@@lottatroublemaker6130 you are welcome.
For additional clarification, the term “flower spike” is not limited to the topic of orchids. Any flowering plant that produces multiple blooms on the same stem will have the term “spike” applied to its inflorescence.
Thank you so much I really appreciate your time the this was most helpful and useful too.
Thanks so much exactly what happen with my orchid going to try

@@emilehoffmann hey, unfortunate it was too late. The crown and the roots were dessicated. If you have at least one green root, there might be a chance
Hey I really hope you can help me with this!
I only have sphagnum peat moss and orchid substrate (pine bark, pine bark hummus, sphagnum peat moss with mineral fertilizer)
Is there any way that these or a combination of these would work with this technique?
Thank you so much in advance for your help, this particular orchid is very important to us!
Thank you for your excellent and most informative video. 🌸
Paula from Mexico. I am doing this, it is about 4 weeks now. I have a few nubs. One is beginning to look like a plant. It is very small, but I can see the forming of leaves. It was a Phaleonopsis that was given to me almost dead. It loss all the leaves, so I thought I am going to try this. It is growing very slow.
Orchids are sloths of the plants world, just be patient they will grow.

@@Classyflowers That is a perfect way to describe them! Just starting my orchid adventures - I have one spiking that I managed to keep alive while knowing nothing about their care. I just purchased my second one. Hoping to learn just enough to make this one flourish.
I wish I knew everthing you do about Orchiads! My fiancee bought me a 40 dollar beautiful dark blue and dark purple one and its was fine, reblooming from the same pot.. and when he went of town, the petals fell off and I am still devasted! I did what ur video said althought I had to work with what came with it, Im havent gotten around to the clear pot and correct potting soil which I am going to do, but the leaves are big and beautiful at the bottom and when I took it apart it has a black rotten band around the outer and I cleaned it, cut all the dead roots off and I even got bark pieces anyways my mom told me to cut the healthy green stake and it had buds on it, so I cut it... and nothing else so far, it does have a new leaf bloomed on top of the other leaves.. Im trying so hard to keep tis orchard alive and I havent seen it bloom back yet..
I have moth and phalebopsis orchids. Not sure what to cut off because I can't find any white roots so I went ahead with this anyway and praying to mother nature that I can revive my babies
Some of my Phal. orchids had the same problem.
The adult ones could grow back naturally (I attached them to trees). I'm gonna try this for the younger ones. Thanks!
Now looking up for your spagnum moss video.
I read you can buy it from a florist
This is an explanation of why am I orchids never seem to die at all they just seem to grow again but I'll be trying this method very soon cuz it's cool
My orchard is in critical condition now 😭. Thank you this video. 😄👍
Thanks for this. Over a week ago I threw out a couple of Phals that had been severely infested with mealy bugs (I may have also gotten depressed and stopped watering them) and died.
Three minutes into your vid I got up and checked outside where I threw them, and one was still alive! It's doubly impressive as it's been in the low 40'sF at night and not that warm during the day. I brought it in, cut off all the dead stuff, put it in a plastic bag with some water, wet the whole thing and poured out the excess water, sealed the bag and put it on my plant shelf for now. I don't have any sphagnum at the moment; hopefully it'll hang on until I can find some.
I'll bet you a nickel it's *not* the one I liked better. :-D
Didn't find...does that mean you pick touy own wild Spagnunm?I did, but its roots smeeled really badly of mould. I cut them off and took the crowns. Will that do, will they grow new roots, or will I have to buy from the florist's? Maybe it has also too much acid, radioactive rain...?
Did you put your whole P plant inside the plasic bag and seal it, or just the root part leaving the top/shoot/growth place out of the plastic bag? Can it grow roots with just plain water, no nourishment? Thanks.
How is it now?
@@saritakhan2394 It died, of course. My own fault. I just don't do orchids anymore.

Cassy I have an orchid that is extremely important to me and my family. My twin brother had bought it for my mom 6 years ago. Very sadly He passed away, every year around our birthdays it would bloom and would warm my mother’s heart. But recently it has gone down hill. If you could recommend anything for my specific plant that would be so appreciated, if there is a way to contact you. Thank you for your time and videos ❤️
It depends what is wrong with your orchid. Can you be more specific
All the big leaves slowly died but in the middle 2 little ones sprouted luckily, but it’s been over 8 months now and they haven’t grown. I keep thinking it’s about to start growing and doesn’t. I’ve taken it out of the wood mulch sub straight and observed the roots which looked like they had rotted but a couple small ones were still alive. I re potted it with some spagnum moss on top around me the orchid, with the wood bark mulch below. I wish I could show you a picture. 2 small leaves about a inch long and a little leaf’s trying to sprout in the middle. Does this technique in the video work with dead sphagnum moss you order online? Thank you very much for your time if you read this thank you.

Thanks so much for this video. You have saved the life of my 11 year old orchid. The original roots have re-hydrated and new leaves have grown out of the original crown (plus a flower stem is budding on the other side) rather than growing a whole new new baby plant. I'd love to hear what you think about foliar feeding of orchids and in this case it wouldn't be exactly fully or it would be feeding the roots using a foliar spray
I'm wouldn't qualify myself as someone who has green fingers but that may be changing. I have 3 orchids that are ready to flower for the third time, so I must be doing something right. I make sure they get sunlight, not direct, and every 7 days, I sit them in water, not too much, to which I add a little liquid fertilizer specially for orchids. It seems to be doing the trick. Fingers crossed.

Us: step by step and make it complicated.
Asia: we just cut any dead root or branch and put it on a wet cold place for a week or two..
That's true, i put a used bottle with a little hole in the bottom, then i gave soil and water and then I hung it on the orchid. It's work, my orchid is alive again😂
Loved your video but I'm convinced I have a black thumb. So black that my husband laughs that nurseries see me coming from afar and plants just hide from me. I can't figure it out. They just die. 😢

Aloha, living in Texas is much harder than Hawaii to grow orchids.
Actually it is true, Texas would not have enough humidity so would be harder, in colder regions you will have issue with lighting but can be resolved with lamps
It may be harder die to lack of humidity but there are ways around it. Run humidifier facing plants. Place them in a fish tank. They even have new glass displays that control temperature and humidity. Keeping them happy can be tricky sometimes but it can be done.
