FYI - Your featured artist Katie Ferrara is a Los Angeles musical treasure. Her voice is compelling and pitch appropriately perfect, mic's loves her, she sings great harmony, her acoustic guitar playing is exceptional (and she also plays piano), her songwriting is inspired and commercial (and in addition to her writing, she can do covers all day long and does them well), she is as charismatic and attractive as heck, and she is an incredibly nice, well-balanced individual. So glad you featured her on this product review (I figured she deserved a little more introduction). PS - I love your videos Warren, very cool stuff. -colin

I bought one of these because I was sick of the clinical digital sound of the ua Apollo. It was a great preamp but just didn’t make me “feel” it, it just felt way too…. Idk. Bought the volt with 4 inputs and 4 outputs, and I currently use it in my studio with a Roswell mini k67 and it sounds FANTASTIC. The added benefit of the vintage drive and compressors is that you can actually route your entire stereo mix through this hardware with the drive and compressor ON, and print out your entire mix through it. I’ve gotten some amazing results just using this interface as an outboard compressor/drive/mastering box and it gives surprisingly juicy results. To be clear, I sold my two THOUSAND dollar interface to trade it for this and I’ve never once regretted my decision. This interface frickin ROCKS.

First and foremost: Katie is a marvelous singer and musician!
What I consider great with the UA Volt interfaces is, that they encourage you to commit during recording. In many cases, the initial and most intuitive decision is one of the best decisions, in contrast to repetitive tweaking, which often may not provide better or more intriguing results.
My primary interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd gen), I also use a Behringer UMC204HD (whose preamps aren't bad either) and sometimes I use an older Yamaha mixer (MG12/4FX) in front of the interface.

That convo at around 10:44, about the older days-of a committed workflow with compression-to-tape, it reminds me of a humble argument I once had with an audio teacher, contesting the usefulness of destructive editing in a DAW, to the non-destructive regiment of modernizing updates and the like. I felt there's a similar principle in the mindset of commitment to the sound early-on that relied less on experimentation post-record, and more on the singular practices of "getting there" with less to fuss-with, less to troubleshoot when things get too diminished. Like how the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I'm grateful to see top-tier companies advocating simplicity in their gear designs. I don't see pitfalls of mediocrity in committing-to better sound early on. I see a shorter, straight line to the goal and the suggestive framework for a simpler studio mentality to get things done...
Although there IS the legendary horror story of the TV/VCR combo; if either one goes, you lose both to get it fixed. Is that IN-THE-BOX braintalk or "thinking outside the box?" :D OMG what-if THERE IS NO BOX??

I like very much that we see a small bust of Ludwig Von Beethoven (hopefully everyone is listening to this man's work?) on the studio furniture, and also seeing inexpensive sound treatment which we all could well use like bed sheets, or hand built gobos. I wound up getting a UA 276 to replace an older Focusrite interface which still worked well, but was having some compatibility strains around newer software (e.g. Cubase 13). Also nice that you do the most simple, effective and inexpensive thing to rid yourself of drum bleed - just record the kick drum alone, then bring in the rest. Totally clever, and a great way to achieve sound as you need, all without running out and buying some stupidly expensive new mic, which you have no experience with.
I'm following now for a while and can see this is a valuable channel to learn practical audio engineering and more around commercial music production.

So simple, such great design makes it a pleasure to work with. I think sound quality wise the two are probably indistinguishable, but having the compressors at your fingertips is great feature. They can both power the SM7B, which was my primary reason for upgrading from my old Steinberg interface. Thanks so much for this brief overview. I will start driving the compressor a little harder :)

I like the concept of the UA Volt. I just wish they made a bigger rack mounted version as well. Like an 8 mic pre version with more outputs. Kinda like the Scarlett series ranging from solo-18i20. It's obvious that UA is trying to compete with the more affordable lines of interfaces with the Volt series like the Scarletts, Moto M series, Audient D series , etc, but if they extended the range to more i/o then they would really have the upper hand. The Apollo series is obviously their big interfaces, but its not in the affordable price range. i could see an affordable larger interface by UA to sell like hot cakes. I know i would buy one.

I love my Volt 276 mainly for recording bass directly into the Volt or through a variety of other paths including a DI and an EV RE320 mic on a cab.

Warren, those are analog FET compression circuits in there! I like the output meter. Some interfaces don't have that.

This probably wasn't the intention of your video, but now I feel the urge to turn up those speakers and listen to the absolute incredible Secret World Live version of In Your Eyes. It's been a while. Thanks!

Quad 405 amp and NS10 monitors… surprisingly decent combo ;) Looks like a decent bit of kit and being able to record through compression in a home studio environment without latency or breaking the bank is awesome!

I think the increased workflow and spontaneity of being able to add or take away the settings in real time on the preamp is excellent. Only thing is I wish it had a better IO, very limiting if you already have any sort of interface. Although you can use it as an added preamp for some colour at that pricepoint.
Great video Warren! Always fun to watch, i forgot how badass that song is

I just ordered this Volt 267 from Thomann.
I cant wait to use the built in comp.
I LOVE recording with the 1176 plug-in. But having it IN, is a no brainer for me.
    Best regards
Thank you so much for this video, it really made my decision even easier,

Thanks for taking the time to record with this. I think the 476 almost works for my B studio. However the Mic inputs being on the front (instead of the back) might blow it for this particular setup. :^(

Thank You so much for this....very inspirational!
I am trying to teach myself some rudimental recording so I can record my kids as they practise their high-school music. I have an old Avid Mbox, a small collection of chinese knock-off mikes and am using Garageband while I try to teach myself Reaper. This really gives a feel for what is possible on a reasonable budget (except talent will always be lacking!). This also hits home the old adage where art decorates/transcends space while music decorates/transcends time, hearing this cover was like bumping into an old friend....you end up on the verge of tears for no reason!!
    Beautiful Job!

Hey , everybody. Don't know if this has been discussed. First, thanks to Warren for this effort and demonstration and to to all the other wonderful musicians. Making the tracks available is such a beautiful service. Actually for the manufacturer , too. What do in know, but it's a shame universal audio doesn't send you a test unit. Well. Let's not discuss strange business decisions here. My question is: Does anyone else here notice the artifact on the vocal tracks? Or at least on the BV_01 Track I can clearly hear it. It's rather low level .Not sure about the others. You have to turn it up. But at the end of each sung word there is some weird "ring" at the end. It's clearly an artifact to me. Is this the compressor of the interface. I don't hear it. On anything else and one might easily overhear it in a full mix. I just wanted to know, if anyone else noticed this. Cheers!

I actually just received my Audient Sono 1 month ago. Since I'm a guitarist (from origin...) it makes more sense to me. It's a great practice device as well with all the emulations, and of course the tube pre-amp makes it really nice together with my pedals.

Great video as always Warren! I’ve been using a Scarlett 2i2 for about 10 years now and I’m saving up for an Apogee Symphony Desktop. But having watched your videos for a few years, I know room acoustics are more important. I’m moving house next week and for the first time I’m finally going to have a dedicated room for recording and mixing! So it’s finally time to buy some bass traps, acoustic panels, and maybe a symphony desktop if I have some money left over 😊
