Honestly - your efforts are absolutely not wasted, but I think you know that. These are real world comparisons, and though they are done over video one can still hear the differences. I used your comparisons to buy a mic for my stepdaughter who is currently attending the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. As untrained as I am, I still was able to get a huge amount out of your comparisons - enough to make a decision. Thanks. She has a very solid voice with good low end. I went with the TLM49 (vs 103) and for versatility the UA710 as she is also an instrumentalist and has a few other mics like the 102 for that. We'll see. I think it is a solid platform for now.
Thank you very much for the kind words Robert. That really means a lot. And for those who want a higher quality version of the review, I uploaded audio versions to my site so they can be listened to there. Also, I wish your stepdaughter the best of luck at school!
All I know is that with vintage mode and the vocal compressor on I actually am finally liking the sound of my vocals. I'm recording into a Neat King Bee in a mostly untreated space, just using very close mic technique and I am shocked at how musical UA made 6:1 compression sound. Fixed ratio is nothing bad, the LA2A is fixed ratio, just turn up your input or "gain" in this instance. Honestly could do some faster processing though, my Behringer umc202hd avoided pops at lower latency times
Can you start doing a mic test in all your videos with reversed speech? I NEED to know how all microphones sound when you speak into them backwards. Might as well redo all your reviews. Get to it.
I tried to get one of these before Christmas but nowhere had them, so I went for the Audient, and I really love the audient. I might get one of these at a later date.
Hey Bandrew, awesome stuff as always, thanks for your work! It's wonderful to have people like you to rely on for accurate and comprehensive info on gear! Also, thanks for including the info on where something was made.
The wood on the side sold me. but my goodness the layering iinstruments rEALLY make it evident how much a quality compressor while tracking can completely change a recoding... Aside from the ability to actual have a compressor in an audio interface (amazing), this thing just looks cool. Plus its affordable?..... yeah i'm sold.
Great in-depth video. Very nice of you the reference to Julian's comparison video. Your both channels complement each other very well. Thumbs up! PS. Please do a video about Black Lion' Audio's Revolution 2x2. Thanks!
I'll be completely honest. I got a Volt as a gift for Christmas and I really didn't see that much of a difference compared to my Mbox Mini 3, or Focusrite 2i2. The reason why I mention this is because the device is REALLY good, but if you already have a interface like the ones I mentioned I don't think it's worth trying to justify spending money when you're not getting the biggest upgrade. Is it an upgrade yes, but is it going to make your music better? No. More on this later. With that being said, if you don't have an interface and you're looking at getting your first one, I'd skip every interface and buy a Volt. And if you have the money, I don't think theirs anything that beats UAD Apollo. (Based on my experiences with like 5 or 6 different mics + UAD plugins = great all round experience) Only speaking from my own experience. I think sometimes people get stuck with trying to buying gear instead of creating. If you channel that focus on creating, it doesn't matter the gear you have. I dont think a common listener will be able to get guess the interface you used haha. Anyways, Podcastage keep up the fantastic work. Your channel is amazing.
woah, i was going down the vocal chain rabbit hole and then i paused and thought, "wait how good are the pres on the volt i already own?". Turns out, pretty damn close to a $1200 preamp! I can definitely hear a difference, but the volt doesn't sound bad by any measure. I'd say it gets 90-95% of the way there. anyway, thanks for saving me a bunch of money!
I can not believe!! Didn't how will fit all together but after this video l am more than sure-I am just changing my home studio exactly from NT1 with Scarlett 2i2 to Shure SM7B with Volt 276. Thank you. Keep going. Please.
I am a musician and currently own the Mackie Onyx Producer 2/2 and one of the reasons I bought it is because it has a mix knob, allowing me to change volume of mix when recording. I really like this Volt 276 but I see no Mix knob. Don't know if you're a musician or not.
Nice job especially on the verbal part of the intro -- talking backward isn't as simple as just spelling backward, as some might think. Yes, I immediately downloaded it, fired up DaVinci Resolve, and reversed it. Well done!
It's a shame UA didn't provide a separate compressor drive control. As it stands, the preamp gain is the only way to control compressor drive level, but that also controls saturation in Vintage Mode. Practically, compressor drive would have to take priority.
I know this isn’t something you focus on but the DAC on this thing is the same as the Apollos which is a huge pro for me as a reference monitor user because they’re some of the cleanest DACs I’ve heard outside of incredibly high end stuff
recently got an analog voice channel and i'm kind of glad I didn't see this video first. I'd be plenty happy if I went with something like this just for the compressor but there's just something about the modularity of an analog channel strip that really makes the audio sound worth it.
Great review. Would like to suggest a video where you test if the SM7B has enough power when recording on a phone/tablet(Android if possible)? For context, I am a blind musician. I find that mobile recording software are enough for my use case. It also helps that they're a lot more simplified, and are Text to Speech friendly. I was gifted a Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen and found out that it can run the SM7B on it's own(no CL/fetthead) when I watched a Julian Krause review on it. I'm interested in getting the SM7B because other mics can't handle the sound pressure of my loud vocals. I am also not able to sound treat my room. Stay healthy and cheers from Philippines.
So niche case, but may be applicable for some: I was run my interface through a KVM switch built into my monitor in order to use speakers and mic with two computers. I was using an SSL 2 which had a tendency to lose connection when switching computers and required the computer to be reboot. I decided to try the Volt to see if this resolves, and it did. I experience no dropped connections. Headphone audio also sounds better on the Volt, for what it's worth.
I want an alternative to my old Focusrite 18i6 1st Gen. These days I only need 2 ins and 2 outs. Don't need ADAT, or MIDI So, this Volt 276 looks great. Thanks for the review.
