Hey Ed Hope you're doing good It'll be really helpful if you do a giveaway... For people like me who couldn't afford! It will be very useful for us to make more music Thank you
It's obvious how much planning you put into this comparison. I feel like every question I would have asked you already knew ahead of time, lol. Great work!
I enjoy that UA is giving people tools to MAKE music and not learn mixing too much. Back in the day we used such minimal gear from just Tube amps, slow compressors and Noisy Eqs and with this harmonic content it will change how the musician hears themselves.
I’m glad you regularly bring up the functionality of being able to adjust the mix (daw output vs mic levels). For me, this is an absolute requirement in an interface (on the hardware or in the software); my old guy ears need it. It amazes me that most reviewers fail to bring it up. It strikes the Volt off my shopping list along with the Motu M2. The M4’s got it but at another price level.
5-pin MIDI is a must for people who are playing electronic music live with a number of different modules/synths. Having 5-pin MIDI on board is a major selling point for me, (one less box to bring to a gig) and one reason i’ll be picking up this interface.
Great review Ed, I’m an Apollo owner but the thing you dismissed is probably the biggest selling point for me, midi ports , I’ve got a JV1080 and a Yamaha Disklavier Piano which both use old school midi, I’m looking forward to hooking them up, the piano’s in another room so it’ll be interesting to try the volt pre’s as well👍
If you have use for them then that’s a good result. UAs research suggested more people would use the feature than mine did. Glad you like the review. Thanks for watching.
@@EdThorne whilst technology moves on , “allowing” for old school I think is a good move, I mean so much love for old school analogue and tape atm , how much old gear Is kicking around not being used?
I think it’s a good sounding interface. And Vintage mode feels more real than the SSL Legacy 4k mode or Scarlett’s Air mode. You should do an aliasing comparison and destroy SSL even further 😜🤣🤣

Hi ed great video may I ask what headphones you are using in this video. Just got the mdr7506 for monitoring and can't stand them looking for some options outside of dt770s
I was using the Adam Audio SP5s. VERY detailed headphones but very prominent at 6 and 10kHz which is uncomfortable for recording, and inaccurate for mixing. I always default back to my Sennheiser HD300 Pros for tracking vocals, and HD600 open backs for mixing!
nice review Ed!, I bought this audio interface and i cannot be happier i just love it very well built, it doesn't move easily. I use my rode nt1 and sounds lovely, the TRS and Headphones outputs sounds just great. I'm happy with it. I'll keep it for a long long time
Great video, Ed, thank you! I'm a voice actor, and I love me some mics and interfaces. I've tried a lot in the past (Focusrite Itrack solo, steinberg ur12, Audient ID4/ID14/ID22, but the three I'm currently using are the SPL Creon, Centrance Portcaster and MicPort Pro 2! The SPL has a similar form factor to the ID22, with a warm sounding pre that I like. The Centrance units are ultra portable, and have excellent pres as well. These new units look very promising for the price!
@@EdThorne Currently just the Sennheiser 416 and Gefell M930, but I've tried the Rode NT1, Sennheiser MK4/8, JZ Microphones J-1, CAD e100s, Lewitt LCT 440, and the Neumann TLM 103 trying to find my perfect VO mics, but I think I've found them! I'd love to try the Rode NTG 5 or Austrian Audio Mics, though. The reviews have been stellar!
@@sdaeley17 The OC818s are beautiful. A very smooth, even, modern sounding mic. The JZ V67 is THE best mic I’ve heard (give or take a U87). Can’t go wrong with an SM7b (I use one for all my videos). And check out the Earthworks ICON (a better sounding, less gain hungry Alt to th 7b)👌
Ed Man I've been blessed with so many interfaces you wouldn't believe!!! 1 Zoom U44, 3 Zoom U-22s, The Zoom H8 RECORDER, Apollo x4, (arrived last week), the focusrite Scarlett 2i2, focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (on back order), Tascam Dr-100 Mkiii, the Zoom H6 all black, Zoom H4N Pro, Zoom H5, Sound Devices Mix Pre 6ii, and I'm positive I'm forgetting something! And we won't even talk about the 32 microphones I have acquired this year alone! Large condensers, small condensers, Dynamics, ribbons, tubes...this time last year I was in the hospital fighting for my life! So thankful to just be alive. I celebrated my 65th birthday last Monday on November 15th. I said all that to day I have my eyes on the Universal Audio Volt 276 or 476. Thank you so much for the great information I really appreciate your channel very much...
Ha, I'm in the same boat my friend. Used just about every interface under the sun from the cheapest of the cheap to the highest end. I recently changed countries and found myself stuck with a mackie onyx, so am looking to grab a volt as soon as it is available. Glad you're still around, and all the best to you and your music!
@@EdThorne I was gonna get the SSL 2+ but you seem to be saying that either the uA volt (476?) or audient ID44 seem to be the way forwards. Need for vocals and DI guitar / bass
Just got the Volt 267 from Thomann. I thought I was having a bad product, with 100% volume in a monitor station had the signal clipping. BUT you sir made my day. The signal is NOT linier, so that makes sense, thank you for this video. Best regards
Hi Thomas, I’m glad that eased your mind. I’ll be honest, I was wondering if that was just an issue with my review unit and if I’d get hammered in the comments for it, but apparently it’s not just me. Mutual relief🙂
@@UniversalAudio Ed for the win yes, I have to come here pestering him with questions as you guys turn off the comments on your videos....wtf? Not a great look for people who might be considering your products...
I'm rocking an OG Duet Firewire (with breakout box) by Apogee that I found recently at my local record store for $50. It was a pain to find its ancient software but I finally managed to get it working and connected with Logic. I dig it. It does exactly what I need it to do, which is allow me to plug in and record my guitars/bass/keys.
@@Gigmeister1 Right! I especially dig its metallic utilitarian look and feel. Especially the breakout box (which upon research was for the Duet 2). Its just cool looking. I actually changed to a Scarlett 2i2 (2nd gen) because I've upgraded my laptop. I'd like to keep the breakout box but I'm struggling to find a use for it without the main Duet interface...
I'm currently using mostly a Roland GO:Mixer Pro and sometimes an Alesis Multimix 4 - they work, the Roland has a lap mic input as well as XLR which is handy. I record keyboards (digi pianos) and vocals and I have the same issue with both (and with any keyboard I use) - very low line level signals; I have to crank the line level and overall levels to get a usable level going out to my iPad or pc, so I've been looking at upgrading (with the hope that this won't be an issue for me anymore). Been looking at the Focusrite when someone told me to look at these
If you learn how Console works properly you will never regret your decision to buy an Apollo. 👌 This should help: ruclips.net/video/0DZM9y6tmBQ/видео.html
If you still have the volt, it would be intresting to compare the vintage pre and 76 comp with your hardware gear like neve/warm and warm audio 76 comp to see how different they are.. (or not).
Awesome work! I really enjoyed both this as well as your comparison video. I really like the idea of having an analogue compressor for colouring my tracks and I was wondering if this one could work as a mastering compressor too? Or is it just more worth paying the extra $ for a cheap beringher compressor? Also, would you consider this an upgrade in terms of recording quality, comparing to NI komplete audio?
Hi there, and thanks. I’ll be honest I didn’t like the NI when I reviewed it 2.5yrs ago. Volt is definitely one of the best sounding in this price range. I’d suggest getting a designated stereo compressor for mastering, it’s unlikely you’ll match the gains exactly on two individual preamps, and you may introduce phase shifting if their EQ curve isn’t identical. I’d also avoid anything Behringer, personally. Check out the Warm Audio Bus Comp, that’s great for the money.
In my case I have an ampeg, so I guess I don't need a virtual plugin for that. Trying to decide between this and Antelope or audiofuse. I'v'e been researching a while, I need help !. I need to know what the back panel 3, 4 inputs are good for on the volt 476, a mic preamp and gain for the rear channels would be great on desktop unit, everyone has a microphone on a desk these days and we want to hook it up on the back of the unit, makes sense for headphones and guitar to use the front since those will be only used from time to time.
Hello Ed - great video. I currently record on a 10year old scarlet 2i2 usb-Interface and want to upgrade my setup to a more professional one - have the chance to buy a used apollo solo for 400€. Would you recommend doing so (I’m a Mac user) or should I rather get a cheaper competitor (e.g. Audient Id14; SSL2+ Or AUD Volt 276) and save some money? Thank you in advance!
I’ve been using an RME FireWire 800 for about 8 years. It’s a bit of a dinosaur these days but sounds great. Upgrading to a new iMac and will be getting a new interface so I don’t have to deal with compatibility issues. Curious about this volt.
Hi Ed, I bought the id14 a couple days ago based on your reviews (still returnable). I use it for my guitar and an sm7b. Which of the two would you prefer and why? Is the volt your new recommendation below 300$?
Hi Nick. To be honest, I can’t decide. I think overall, the iD14 having ADAT expandability and the iD Monitor routing app makes it more appealing to me. But the simplicity of the Volt and compression would make it a great travelling interface. They’re both great. You’ve definitely not made a bad choice 🙂
I have focusrite 2i4 gen first which have been using it for the last 5 years and now I am thinking of upgrading it. So what's the point of having a console of a slightly higher standard but at a lower price? Is it worth to go with volt 476 or apollo solo or rme babyface pro ?
The interface I will always recommend is the Apollo Twin X, if your budget can stretch to that. If not it depends what your needs are that the 2i4 is providing?
Currently using a older Scarlett interface with a UV twin 710 mic pre. I want to upgrade interface and get rid of the twin 710. And get the 2 76. Would you recommend?
Hi...thanks for the video. I use scarlett 2i2 2nd generation with a ipad pro connected to a midi keyboard. I use VST plug-ins for live performance and the latency is very less. How is the latency with Volt 2 with my setup? Thanks.
I'll stick with my Motu M2 (which I LOVE), at least until UA adds loopback, and drops the price a bit. The compressor didn't seem like it smoothed out the volume much (waveforms look identical??). Thanks for the review. :)
The waveforms are very similar. Only when you impose the fastest setting can you see a difference. The compression is a little more obvious on guitars and keys but I couldn't demo this at the time of doing this video.
I agree with you about LUNA integration -- I only use LUNA now (came from PT), and have multiple Apollo units, but would love to have a Volt in my mix room to use for overdubs as a different flavor.
@@billyhughes9776 keep me posted bro, I had a few Apollo’s in the past I have the volt 276 but thinking bout getting another apollo, which ones you have?
Hello , thank you very much for your passion and your time given to us, that's insane ! I also own a wa-73 eq, do you think I can bypass the preamp from the interface but still use the compressor from it ? Again, thank you for this !
If you were starting out, would you go with a Volt 276 Studio Pack (Volt's bundle with headphones and mic) or Audient iD14 and spring for a decent mic? (I already I already have a pair of AKG K-66s)
Ed, I'm about to buy an audio interface next week and I'm between the Id4 MKII and the Volt 2, what would you choose? They are both very good and I want to make the best decision. Thanks for the review, your channel is amazing!
if comparing those two, I would get the volt 2 as it has midi controllers in the back (for basically the same price) if you choose to explore your musical journey more in the future. I would get what your looking for plus something extra that may come in handy in the future. Hence why I switched from Scarlett 2i2 to a motu m2
Hi Carlos. As Arto above has suggested, consider what your need are. Personally, ADAT is more useful to me than MIDI. I really like the Volt though. I’d suggest the 476 for I/O flexibility.
It seems to have a UK filter. I didn't detect any accent in your signing. Kiddin' -- I just purchased the Volt2 and am anxious to test it out - great review as always!!
If to choose for home guitar recording via line-in only, and monitoring purposes which would be best choice? 1.Scarlett 2i4 3gen 2.Universal Audio VOLT 276 3.SSL2 4.Audient iD14 MKII
Dear Ed, I have used a MOTU Audio express for years. It still works, although some lights no longer work. The UA Volt 476p has caught my attention. Mainly because of the ability to re-amp your signal, including the 610-style preamp and the 1176-style compressor. I watched your video about this. My question is: if I switch to the Volt, will that mean a sonic upgrade for me compared to my old, trusty Audio Express? Thank you in advance for your advice!
Vintage mode and the compressor will offer some nice recording variations but if you already have four channels for recording a piano (close and wide/room stereo for example)I’d say there’s no need to change.
Do you think that the SM7b would need a cloudlifter on this interface? I’ve been debating with myself for a while if I need one when I get this audio interface. Great video btw I’ve been looking for an more in-depth user review on this device!
I recorded all the voice audio in this video with my SM7b… admittedly at full gain but I was 12” off mic and speaking rather than singing and projecting. It’s strangely got headroom and made absolutely no noise at full volume. I mentioned this in the video 🙂
@@EdThorne Cool! Do you think if you were singing into that mic rather than talking would the gain setting would be about the same or less? Thanks for the reply
@@mosesmusazi it only has 55db of gain, most interfaces in this class are 60db or higher, which is really what you need to meet that -12 threshold for the sm7b. The UA Volt is using dated tech, probably a cost saving measure but you can find better preamps if you ask me.
Question: I've got the Volt 176 and rotating the monitor knob on top doesn't seem to lower or increase my mic monitoring levels. Isn't it supposed to do just that?
If you have software monitoring on in your DAW and your mic audio is coming out of the speaker it will. Although you probably want to avoid this because it may cause feedback.
Amazing video and review. How does the Volt compare to the Apogee Duet 2 sound quality wise? I love my Duet, but I recently decided to purchase a synthesizer and unfortunately the Apogee has limited inputs.
Thanks, Jay. The Apogee Duet is a considerably more expensive interface, likely because it has better parts and converters. The pres are flatter, I dare say lifeless - but some desire such neutrality. A better comparison would be Duet 3 (new version) VS Apollo Twin X.
@@EdThorne Aside from recording into the box, like general audio quality coming out of it for listening back to music played through my computer, would there be any difference in audio quality?
@@jayway1116 It’s likely the Duet would sound better because it will have better converters. The difference may only be minimal though. The Volt sound great regardless, it’s not a flat, lifeless interface like I find the M2 to be.
I purchased an Apollo solo heritage bundle and a 2021 Macbook Pro M1. Life got busy and I am just now getting ready to record. I am wondering if I should grab a Volt or stick with my Scarlett solo for mixing on my older Mac Pro (El Capitan and waves 9.6). I will track guitars, bass, and vocals on the MBP through the Apollo and MBP but I have a lot more plugin options for tweaking the mix with waves (Not going to pay for the upgrade) on my other machine. Final mix/mastering back on the MBP 'cause the UAD included plugins are just better than waves.
It’s the same converters in the Volt and Scarlett so the difference won’t be huge for monitoring. However, however UA have integrated the converters, the Volt monitor outputs do sound better and the HP is better too imho.
I only listened on my phone.. but I found the vintage and compressor settings a bit harsh. I tend to trim 4-6K on vocals and guitars as this is always the ear biting harsh area for me..where everything builds up...guitars vocs Amd drums/cymbals. So I'm not sure I might be inclined to just use the clean setting to let it sit back in the mix more. Add vintage plugins I can tweak after the fact. I was hoping they would be the selling point on this interface for me but now I'm not sure. Great review thanks
Hello Ed!! Your reviews are top-notch and give me a hard to deciding on which interface to go with since you are so detailed about your reviews. I am currently a bedroom music producer making beats and recording my vocals but im looking to delve deeper into mixing. Which audio interface would suggest I get that is budget-friendly between the Volt 276 and Audient 14?? Thank you for your feedback.
Thanks, Henry. If you mix on headphones check out the Topping E2X2! The DAC/HP amp is far superior to these, however I prefer the preamps on the Audient/Volt. It’s a tough one. Maybe buy all three and see which your prefer and send the others back…
Hi Ed. I'm seriously considering an exchange audio interface. I use at Present a Motu 2408 mk3. Which has served me good. It is giving trouble. Sound is dropping in and out so I suspect its the interface. I have had it from new approx 9 years. Thanks for the video. Good as usual.
I’d only suggest upgrading if you can stretch to something with noticeably better converters/preamps. In this case, probably not. If you can afford an Apollo, probably yes. But like I said I’m the video, a mic upgrade may be the better decision 🙂
Hey ed thank u for the review but i got a question, im considering ordering 476 but i need to work with to headphones or three at a time, so can i plug the second headphone to a line output ?
I was considering on waiting for these to come out however I already purchased a Motu m2 after returning the Scarlett 2i2. Considering UA is trying to fill the gap in the lower priced audio interfaces, esp still being usb 2.0, I don't see the need for these interfaces. If I become more serious with recording, id def upgrade to the higher end UA interfaces (arrow, apollo). I just don't see the need for these esp when there are soo many other competitors out there already offering the similar thing.
UA are wanting to offer something different in this price range (built compression and definitely a vintage sound). I think it’s good fo consumer choose but I agree it’s a saturated market. I can’t recommend the Apollo’s enough if you upgrade.
Currently using a FOCUSRITE Scarlet 2i4 (First Gen). I'm looking to dedicate it for my old Kurzweil K2000 into my current projects (It still sounds great). I love the fact that is has two inputs, midi in and out as well as USB C, all in a compact design. I'm anticipating the reviews on its DAC capabilities before I pull the trigger.
Hi Ed. By mistake I push 48v button while having my Shure beta 58A dynamic microphone connected, though all gains and volume were at minimum(don’t know if that matters). It was just for 2 second since I realized and turned the device off immediately. Do you think it could have damaged my microphone?
Using a Scarlett 18i6 1st Gen. It might be time to go new. I certainly don't need the inputs I used to . I'm getting a lot of DPC latency, undiagnosed and Focusrite claim it ain't the interface. I wonder, would a new interface just solve my issue? The 276 look great
Question. I know the UAD Arrow had issues running on buss power meaning a laptop needed it's power supply connected. Does the volt run well purely on USB?. Thanks
Hi Peter, the Solo needs a USB-C (3.0+) cable to supply 100Watts of power. USB 2.0 cables only supply 60Watts which isn’t enough for these devices. The Volts run on USB 2.0 with enough power 🙂
Can you mute the monitors sound and only monitor through the headphones? On my Focusrite Solo 3rd for example I have to turn off my monitors when I record since it's a home studio and the mic would pick up sound from the monitors. Thanks, I would really appreciate a response!
What @universalaudio said. It's really cool they reply to comments on this video! It should be the same process on your Scarlett btw, turn down the large monitor dial which won't affect your headphone volume.
Great video! I am super confused between SSL 2+ and Volt 276. I like the fact that SSL hosts 2 headphone outputs, monitor mix knob and also the included vocalstrip plugin. Where as the Volt hosts the 76 compressor onboard which is really handy. Which one do you prefer, and why? Thanks!
@@pathikmaniyar Sorry, I thought you were referring to the monitor speaker knob. Yes, you’re correct the SSL does have the USB-Input blend knob. You can achieve the same effect by balancing your DAW output level with your input level (dictated by the gain of course).
The best interface in this price range for high-impedance headphones is the Motu M series. This performance fine, but better suited to low impedance headphones IMO.
Hi there, I wasn’t aware they’d updated the Clarett, thanks for the heads up. The Clarett+ looks like it has newer converters and is now fully USB-C bus powered. The old model had very good converters and required a power supply to operate phantom power. This is a good upgrade but the features remain the same. Very solid interfaces. Noticeably better than the Scarlett’s for sure: ruclips.net/video/IkuuxFvNB_g/видео.html
Currently have a Tascam 1608 which I stopped using . No future support for my MacBook. So I bought an ART quad iv . Th phones out came faulty so looking at returning everything and getting the 476
I have a focusrite Scarlett and an Apollo solo and a presonus 24c,which I pretty much chose bc of the midi connect. If I could have got the same A to D conversion (if it is in the Volt?) and the good preamp and compressor in the Volt, I would have just kept the focusrite skipped the 24c and Apollo solo and spent the extra money on a faster computer. The DSP you get with the Solo isn't enough to really do much more than if you just had a faster computer, in my experience. Their plugins are great; but not the only great ones around.
The plugins are great but other brands are catching up, I agree. The Solo is fundamentally flawed with only one DSP chip. IMO the Solo should have been a one input device with two DSP chips.
Is the A to D conversion on the Volt on par with the Apollo Solo? My Solo turned into a one in, after a few months, when the one input broke. So, I've been mono on the input anyway, but I probably wouldn't have bought the thing if it wasn't at least a 2 in (originally!) I didn't realize that most modern computers can already handle recording in through a couple of plugins already. Which, as you mentioned, with one chip, is all you are gonna get anyway.
did you notice after you plug your XLR in it is impossible to pull it out? You will never have access to use that channel with TRS Quarter inch input. I have 2 Volts a 4/76 and a 2/76 my XLR cables a permanently locked in. They have no release tab.
Over the years, i’ve owned alot of the entry-level/budget interfaces to use as my mobile setup when i’m travelling. I’ve owned the scarlet, audient id44, audient evo, ssl2+, and motu m2, and after hearing this demo, I’d 100% recommend the Motu out of all at this price point. Although the analog circuitry of the compressor and vintage function may seem cool, I see it more as a gimmick, similar to the 4k button on the SSL interface. There are free plugins and stock DAW plugins that are far more flexible and sound better at compression and thre “vintage” sound. If you like the sound of the interface, go for it, but dont be suckered into buying it on the vintage mode or compressor. The software bundle it comes with will get you further than those. Aim for an interface that gives you the amount if ins/outs you need, has enough good-clean preamp gain, good latency/direct monitoring, and enough juice for your monitor and headphones. I’ve been buying gear for the better part of 20 years……Dont get reeled in by the ginmicks. Just my $.02
@@DieTabbi If you absolutely want a hardware compressor, there's a ton of options, even inexpensive ones like the FMR RNC go a long way. But honestly, there are a ton of free plugins that get the job done quite nicely, even the stock ones in most DAWs perform pretty well. It's just my opinion that a compressor circuit added to an entry-level interface is not a selling point that would make me pay more over comparable interfaces. I'd rather buy an interface that performs equally as well in the primary duties of an interface, for less money, and use a free software compressor or either buy a dedicated hardware comp. I have a lot of gear in my home studio (not much that's considered budget or entry level), so I'm not trying to bash this interface, just giving my opinion since I've been down the road of getting caught up in gimmicks or hype when I was first getting into pro audio equipment.
@@tonygunz21 thank you for your kind explanation. I am new to all this stuff. I want to replace my GoXLR mini for a descent audio interface. I have a XLR and headphone planar magnetic and 250Ohm which needs more power then the GoXLR has. I don‘t know software compressors, that why I asked for suggestion.
@@DieTabbi Sure thing, no problem. I haven't used this UAD, but I see they offer a cheaper version without the compressor circuit. That may not be a bad option, but I still can recommend the Motu overall. It has all the features I needed, sounds good, and is built very solid. The SSL2+ checked pretty much all of those same boxes, but didn't have enough juice in the headphone amplifier, which was a dealbreaker. The Audient ID14 mkii is also likely one of the best contenders in the sub $300 price point. I've had the ID44 a while back and really liked it, just wanted to try other things out. I liked the Audient Evo as well, but it felt like a toy, and not having separate knobs for different controls wasn't the best for me. For what it is, it was pretty cool though, and very small so easy to take wherever. Try downloading a free LA2A style compressor to learn. That's probably the easiest style of compressor to use, just two knobs.
just got a volt 2 to connect my computer to my mixer for audio tracks, it actually sounds really good. the output meter sucks, not much headroom on the meter, it would be nice if you hit red on the meter it would stay red for a few seconds. its hard to tell if your hitting red or just yellow, but for the money, if you dial it in it sounds really good. connects to ios too. sounds way better than bluetooth, thats why i bother rather than using bluetooth.
I’m using an Audient ID44 on the desk, and two Audient rack pres, and a focus right rack pre vocal chain unit, with comp limit, de esser, EQ and other goodies in the unit. It’s a total vocal chain in one unit. But I use it for more than Vox. I’m happy with it.
@@EdThorne it’s the Focusrite Platinum 9 VoiceMaster Pro, optical class A pre-optical expander-vintage harmonics-optical comp-tube/drive saturation-EQ-de esser, it’s kind of a Swiss Army knife. I still do a lot in the box, but everything gets, a little kiss of it, kind of takes off the digital edge. But I especially use it for vocals. I patch in guitar pedals too. You can monitor without latency when tracking Vox. Very handy all in one unit. A fair price too.

Cool man. If it’s useful to you, that’s a win 🙂
Didn’t even know there were modern non-digital alternatives lol! Thank you, great content & subbed !
The 5 pin midi was a godsend for me as I use analog synths and love having the flexibility of sending midi to the synth
Same for me! It was actually a selling point for me.
I was looking for a interface and never heard of this. But this review really spoke out to me.
All UA stuff is great. These are their budget friendlier, non-DSP processing interfaces. Great interfaces.
i'm using a Roland Duo Capture EX (with VS preamps)
I personally believe it's doing more than expected from it.
Love your video.

Thanks, David. I hope it was useful 🙂
Great review mate. Not gonna lie having the option of the vintage PRE and 76 comp is a very nice addition for tracking. Quite clever from UA tbh
I think it’s a good sounding interface. And Vintage mode feels more real than the SSL Legacy 4k mode or Scarlett’s Air mode. You should do an aliasing comparison and destroy SSL even further 😜🤣🤣
@@EdThorne I think the chances of UA giving me a volt to play around with are pretty slim. More chance of me being liked on gearslutz 🤣

I'll keep it for a long long time
Amazing. Glad it was helpful.
Thank you for the very good presentation of these two devices!
You’re welcome. I hope it helped 🙂
Thanks, Sean. That’s a lot of devices. What mic(s) are you using?
@@EdThorne Currently just the Sennheiser 416 and Gefell M930, but I've tried the Rode NT1, Sennheiser MK4/8, JZ Microphones J-1, CAD e100s, Lewitt LCT 440, and the Neumann TLM 103 trying to find my perfect VO mics, but I think I've found them! I'd love to try the Rode NTG 5 or Austrian Audio Mics, though. The reviews have been stellar!

The best interface - is the one you have when inspiration takes you.
I have an original Apogee Duet FW and it works fantastic with my iMac running Big Sur. Their converters are hard to beat!
Been looking at the Focusrite when someone told me to look at these
I have been using Scarlett 2i2 1st gen for years now but I’ve just upgraded to UAD Apollo Twin X and I think I’m going to enjoy the new change!

I am Currently using the Black Lion 2x2 Interface. ITs a solid piece of gear! The Volt definetly has my attention.
The BLA2x2 has incredible converters and HP amp but I hated it otherwise. Love Vintage Mode and the compressor on the Volts.
@@EdThorne thanks for the advice and for taking the time to reply. Keep up the great work!

Great review. Thanks.
Hi, I’ve replied to you other comment. Thanks for watching 🙂
Been waiting for mine forever.
It’s worth the wait
The Audient is way better than this Volt interfaces.
Thanks.
I don’t play guitar so latency isn’t really an issue for me because I use the direct monitoring. @juliankrause has done measurements in his review.
Thanks Ed for mentioning the fact that the audio interface does not have a loopback feature.
Love the review! Also… was beginning to think I was the only person who owned the SP-5’s. 👀
Thanks, Daniel. Yeh they’re not common, I suspect because of the price. I’ve reviewed them in this video: ruclips.net/video/UP_lwLUppHw/видео.html

It’s definitely a massive contender in the price range… if they spent more time on user options they could kill it
It seems to have a UK filter. I didn't detect any accent in your signing. Kiddin' -- I just purchased the Volt2 and am anxious to test it out - great review as always!!
Great video. Very interesting !
Thanks, I’m glad it was useful 🙂🙏
If to choose for home guitar recording via line-in only, and monitoring purposes which would be best choice?
1.Scarlett 2i4 3gen
2.Universal Audio VOLT 276
3.SSL2
4.Audient iD14 MKII
Dear Ed, I have used a MOTU Audio express for years. It still works, although some lights no longer work. The UA Volt 476p has caught my attention. Mainly because of the ability to re-amp your signal, including the 610-style preamp and the 1176-style compressor. I watched your video about this.
My question is: if I switch to the Volt, will that mean a sonic upgrade for me compared to my old, trusty Audio Express?
Thank you in advance for your advice!
the wood enclosure looks fantastic
Have you tried the sm7b with a CloudLifter? I love the extra gain before my interface.
I have not. I’ve never needed one. I can see the appeal though 🙂
Currently using Audient ID44 curious if this simplicity is better for tracking stereo piano.
I'm just getting into recording guitar and figured I can't really go wrong with the Volt 1.
It’s solid. Let us know how you get on with the software/Softtube amp sims👌
@@EdThorne I appreciate it man! Thanks for the advice.
@@EdThorne I appreciate the feedback my brother. Not a lot of people take the time. 👊🏽
How does this compare with the IK Multimedia AXE I/O? I’m new to this and looking for a recommendation. Thanks
I haven’t used the IK interface. They didn’t respond when I reached out to them about a review.
Maybe buy all three and see which your prefer and send the others back…
@EdThorne Thank you, Ed!!! I will go with your advice. Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for your response.
I'am choosing between Duet 2 and Volt 276 - what would you recommend?
Hi Ed. I'm seriously considering an exchange audio interface. I use at Present a Motu 2408 mk3. Which has served me good. It is giving trouble. Sound is dropping in and out so I suspect its the interface. I have had it from new approx 9 years. Thanks for the video. Good as usual.
Thanks. I’m sorry your interface is on its last legs. The new EVO16 is a great sounding interface for the cash.
I've replaced my motu2 because the windows drivers are horrible I just ordered the volt 476p looking forward to it
I'm still using focusrite saffire 6 usb, do I need to upgade? will i benefit when getting the Volt 2?
I’d only suggest upgrading if you can stretch to something with noticeably better converters/preamps. In this case, probably not. If you can afford an Apollo, probably yes. But like I said I’m the video, a mic upgrade may be the better decision 🙂
Hey ed thank u for the review but i got a question, im considering ordering 476 but i need to work with to headphones or three at a time, so can i plug the second headphone to a line output ?
I don’t believe so.
No, but you can split the headphone out to feed multiple sets.
@@UniversalAudio Thanks, guys.
@@UniversalAudio well, i did figure it out but still need to thank you for taking care of your customers 😊
Exactly
UA are wanting to offer something different in this price range (built compression and definitely a vintage sound). I think it’s good fo consumer choose but I agree it’s a saturated market. I can’t recommend the Apollo’s enough if you upgrade.
The Volt series is USB-C, not USB-A (2.0).
The Volt is supplied with relatively old converters. They still sound good, but I'm surprised they didn't go with a newer model.
Hi Ed. By mistake I push 48v button while having my Shure beta 58A dynamic microphone connected, though all gains and volume were at minimum(don’t know if that matters). It was just for 2 second since I realized and turned the device off immediately. Do you think it could have damaged my microphone?
No, you're good to go. Dynamics ignore phantom.
@@UniversalAudio thanks for your response

Awesome. Enjoy 🙂🤘
What do you think of it?
Using a Scarlett 18i6 1st Gen. It might be time to go new. I certainly don't need the inputs I used to . I'm getting a lot of DPC latency, undiagnosed and Focusrite claim it ain't the interface. I wonder, would a new interface just solve my issue? The 276 look great
Question. I know the UAD Arrow had issues running on buss power meaning a laptop needed it's power supply connected. Does the volt run well purely on USB?. Thanks
Hi Peter, this is not true. Arrow/Solo can easily be bus powered by a laptop without an AC adaptor.
Sure, simply turn down the monitor level.
@@UniversalAudio Thank you! I saw that there were 2 different knobs for the monitors level and the headphones level but I wasn't sure.
What @universalaudio said. It's really cool they reply to comments on this video! It should be the same process on your Scarlett btw, turn down the large monitor dial which won't affect your headphone volume.
@@EdThorne Nope, unfortunately if you turn down the main knob it will also disable the headphones output, even with direct monitoring turned off.
Thanks for the video. Do you think the volt 1 is better than the focusrite scarlett solo 3rd generation?
Yes.
@@EdThorne thank you 😁
Upgrading from my old Behringer umc-204hd, because these also have MIDI out, which is great for hooking up synths for a live show.
Thanks!
The Volt also has a monitor mix knob and comes with loads of plugins. Personally, I prefer the UA.
@@EdThorne okay, Thanks! But how did you say that Volt has a monitor mix knob? It does have a direct monitoring button, but not a mix knob I think.
@@pathikmaniyar Sorry, I thought you were referring to the monitor speaker knob. Yes, you’re correct the SSL does have the USB-Input blend knob. You can achieve the same effect by balancing your DAW output level with your input level (dictated by the gain of course).

Anything on the Head Phone Amp output impedance?
Hi, I have a headphones 250ohm, what are you think about connect with this interface
The best interface in this price range for high-impedance headphones is the Motu M series. This performance fine, but better suited to low impedance headphones IMO.
How do you feel about the new focusrite claret 2pre+
Hi there, I wasn’t aware they’d updated the Clarett, thanks for the heads up. The Clarett+ looks like it has newer converters and is now fully USB-C bus powered. The old model had very good converters and required a power supply to operate phantom power. This is a good upgrade but the features remain the same. Very solid interfaces. Noticeably better than the Scarlett’s for sure: ruclips.net/video/IkuuxFvNB_g/видео.html
looking for an Ai to match my schiit stack and hifiman headphones. looking to get a electrovoice mic just not sure the correct interface to go with ^^
Having the 5-pin MIDI in and out was a deciding factor for me. It'll help me use some of my older gear with the Volt.
Currently have a Tascam 1608 which I stopped using . No future support for my MacBook. So I bought an ART quad iv . Th phones out came faulty so looking at returning everything and getting the 476
Ah, that’s annoying. You’ll love the 476.
Great Review...
Like apollo... Does Volt have a console??
Thanks, Adina. Sadly, it does not. There’s a few features missing I talk about at the end of the video.
Hi Ed, dummy question... this comes with a usb c to usb a included, can I use a usb c to usb c if I have one? Yeah, right? Thanks! Sterling work!
Yes 🙂 And thanks 😊
did you notice after you plug your XLR in it is impossible to pull it out? You will never have access to use that channel with TRS Quarter inch input. I have 2 Volts a 4/76 and a 2/76 my XLR cables a permanently locked in. They have no release tab.
No. All my Volts are fine. Sounds like bad XLR ends. Try Neutrik connectors.
Just my $.02
You may see it as a gimmick but to my ears it sounds nice.
And which compressor should I buy for the Moto or any other without software compressor?
Nice review. Dude, you look like a young Toby Stephens, the English actor
Great review. Only thing I don't understand is WHY would they only provide one headphone output
Thanks. Most interfaces under £/$300 only come with one HP.
That’s a tidy set-up 👌 What are the hardware units in the Vox chain? 500 series?
@@EdThorne it’s the Focusrite Platinum 9 VoiceMaster Pro, optical class A pre-optical expander-vintage harmonics-optical comp-tube/drive saturation-EQ-de esser, it’s kind of a Swiss Army knife. I still do a lot in the box, but everything gets, a little kiss of it, kind of takes off the digital edge. But I especially use it for vocals. I patch in guitar pedals too. You can monitor without latency when tracking Vox. Very handy all in one unit. A fair price too.
I’m currently using motu m4. How good is the volt compared to the motu? Plz let me know
I haven’t used an M4 but I’ve heard great things. It’s probably not worth swapping unless you want the vintage mode sound and built in compressor.
I currently have a Peavey PV6 and that's why I'm seeing this review! I'm interested in the volt 😢
