I have an M1 Ultra, and when I use input monitoring in Logic, I experience significant delay, even without any effects. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but onboard DSP still seems really good, even with M1 Macs.
@Mopsie You’re not meant to use input monitoring when using an Apollo. Monitor through the Console app and turn software/input monitoring OFF in Logic!!!!!
Great video, thanks! Can you please tell me how important it is to bypass the built-in preamplifiers? I'm going to buy some good expensive preamp, but my card has combined microphone and line inputs. As I understand from the reviews, there is no way to bypass the built-in ones. Should I buy a preamp or will the built-in one reduce the quality of the external one? I have an Audient ID14 MK2
@@EdThorne ok thanks i just got this interface but since i dont have a usb c i have to use the usb A format just asking if it changes the sound of it.. but thanks for confirmation
@@VST2323 As explained in the video, what's more important, is whether the USB cable is gen 1, 2, 3.1, or 3.2. That affects the power transfer which will affect the headphone amp.

I'm considering the id14, will i be able to apply mono so that the audio input in windows combines both microphone signal without having to use dsp or additional software?
You can’t combine mic signals on any audio interface, that’s not how preamps work. You can link inputs to become stereo on the Apollo, but then they would be panned left and right. You need software at some point to mix the channels together for your output pathway (master bus, headphones, Loopback, etc).
@@EdThorne I'm looking for a bit of a niche usecase where i want two microphones in two different rooms to be mixed together to a dual mono/mono configuration that shows up in windows sound devices directly via usb for use with a software that doesn't provide any setting to mix microphone down to mono. I tried the scarlett 4i4 but that sends the microphones to left and right, and if i choose 1 channel in the device settings, it only sends 1 microphone. Arethere no affordable hardwware that could do something like this in the audio space? I'm completely new to this so sorry if this could sound a bit dumb. tl;dr I want to record live vocieover of gameplay through a softwware called nvidia shadowplay and keep the centered microphone voiceover and not having to swwitch mic physically when i play on my tv or desk setup.
Interresting how the apollo smoothes out the harsh signature of the music in the loopback test...the audient sounds very kitchen radio like, but the apollo adds a nice pillow effect. I actually prefer the apollo loopback to the mastered file, as it has way more soul and makes it sound much more interresting. Maybe 30-50 passes would make a good compromise of fidelity and vibe?
The point is to amplify the effects of the signal degradation caused by the components. It’s an non-real life test but highlights the subtle difference in conversion and preamp influence.
Oh, one more question please!!! In your Audient iD14 review video (I think it was the non-MKII), you said we'd need to plug in the power supply in order to use the Phantom Power. But is this "MKII" model the same? Can I record with my condenser mic (Audio Technicha AT2020) which needs Phantom Power) by using the USB Thunderbolt connection on my computer??? Or must I use the power supply? (I use a Dell XPS 15 9560 PC laptop which has Thunderbolt connectivity, by the way.) Thank you for any help mate!😅😆
Thanks for the great video. I interested about not id14 , id44 Audient and the original cables interfaces is 2.0 ...its better to buy other cable USB C-A 3.2 for a great quality ? Headphones Monitoring ? ( I used Beyeardynamic 700 pro X).. Its Amazing why originaly cable not a 3.2
Can someone tell me if the Apollo DSP is necessary for someone who composes in a DAW using a MIDI keyboard with VSTs? Or is this really aimed at non-MIDI instrumentalists (e.g. guitarists/drummers)? Does the Apollo handle the VSTs already on my computer, or does it only handle its own company plug-ins?
So I have ID14 mk II and it’s connected via external monitor’s usb 3.0 hub. Therefore I looked for A to C cables and got ones with “3.0” specifications…nevertheless- I’m getting that distortion at max volume on my HD600. So I tested the ID14 connected stright to MacBook with a thick Thunderbolt cable- and distortion was indeed gone. Now - I would never need this much volume. Question is - does this distortion appears only when on max volume or it’s there even at lower volumes but is just harder to hear?
Thank you very much for the video, I will buy the Audient iD14. I will only work with mixing and mastering and recording vocals and guitar. I'm starting now and I think it will suit me very well according to your video. I really liked your image quality, which camera are you using?
Great video. I have a question (I'm a beginner sorry) if I need to send signal audio from my Strymon Iridium in Line mode to the interface, do I have to select something in the interface software for select Line input rather than mic? I need to use a 6,3 jack from my Iridium to the interface. thank you
The Clarett+ probably has fractionally better converters and preamps but the HP is weak and it doesn’t have monitor control software. Go with what’s more important to you 🙂🔥
Muchas gracias ayudame 😅😅😅
I think the ZenGo is a fantastic interface, and serious competition for both of these devices. The preamps are probably cleaner, and the converters are very clean and detailed. You can use more plugins on each channel strip with the Antelope over the Apollo because their plugins are less DSP intensive when used as inserts. The Apollo has Unison technology which physically re-configures the impedance and gain staging of the preamps to replicate the analog hardware they're emulating - and it does this very well! The Apollo is still more advanced in terms of monitoring (although the Antelope is probably the second most advanced system I've seen), but the ZenGo allows you to record a wet and dry copy of each input channel which is awesome! I may do a full comparison video on all this.
The preamp quality is almost the same on all audio interface currently. But the apollo is not only an audio interface it is mainly a power full DSP which handle in real time many power full plug ins. If you are not interest by UAD plugin for sure you better keep your money. But check the quality of the Bass amp or Guitar or reverb uad plug in, it can change your mind.
I don’t use plugins . I use external for everything . I just believe the real deal sounds better than plug ins for my opinion. So I rather go for the Audient
The specs on the chart are wrong Mic input dyn range: - Apollo = 118 db - audient =113 db Mic input Noise - Apollo = - 127 db - audient = - 129 db With Apollo you basically pay the software and the DSP capabilities.. But there is not much difference in the Hardware compartment.. Thanks for the video, well done
I noticed the same thing. Something wrong about those specs. Audient ID14 MK2: Mic input dynamic range is 113,1 dBu (J. Krause...), no 101 dBu as Ed said. But otherwise good info.
Thanks for this video great work. I have a problem when recording gibson explorer with passive T500 magnets, my signal clip though no matter how I set the gain pots. This is not the case when I record Harley Benton P bass. Do you connect the guitar directly to the card or do you have some DI to reduce the input signal? Do you have this experience with any of your guitars with passive electronics? What pickups did you record with?
Thanks, I hope the video was helpful. I don’t play guitar so can’t comment on pickups. Are you using the Hi-Z input on your interface for the Gibson? And are you using an amp sim before it?
@@EdThorne Yes, I connected the guitar direct to the front instrument input. But the signal clips without any additions to the signal and without amplifier simulations.
@@Projamusic The instrument input should have a Hi-Z selector switch to introduce a higher impedance circuit for hi gain inputs such as your guitar. A DI box can also do this.
Hi! I'm being offered an Apollo Twin Duo (heritage edition), but no "X" at $540. Should it be the MK2 or previous version? Would it be worth the money? Thanks.
When using Ableton Live 11, will the Apollo leverage the onboard DSPs for processing Ableton virtual instruments and plugins or are the DSPs only limited to processing UAD plugins? Thank you.
Hey great review. I have a doubt. You say to choose an interface with usb 3 to improve headphone monitoring. But the Audient one is only usb2.0. When you do the test you compare different cables, not protocols. So in conclusion, it's better to use the usb C cable instead of the usb A? Is that what makes the difference? Thanks!
@@EdThorne But a usb 3.1 cable into a USB 2.0 interface you mean? Is this cable included or you bought it separately? I assume they include two usb2.0 cables (one type A and one type C) thanks!
Hi, thanks for the great video. I am looking everywhere and can't find the answer to this question. I am using way too many VST instruments, have 6-7 Kontakt windows open along with Superior drummer etc. My question is this: Does the DSP in UAD Apollo or any DSP sound interface support the computer processing power while using VSTis, or DSP only gives support to CPU ONLY for the mixing plugins like UAD plugins?
How to use a Guitar Instead of a Mic for Inserts (Sends & Returns)iD24. I connected my guitar to use it with a Compressor Console, but the sound went Off!
Hey is it because of how its played or did the Apollo sounded more expressive and better than id 14 in DI input test? this kind of worries me if i should get it or not.
I ordered my audient id14 mk2 and after watching this video I think it was a great choice. Obviously Apollo is better but it's not necessary in your home studio. It's such a great alternative! I'm a little shocked how fast technology is going forward. Thanks Ed for you comparison. It was really helpful. Greetings from Poland! 😁
do you still use it with no problems? I want to get ID4 as I don't need more channels, but I`ve heard many people having different malfunctioning problems with Audient line and bad technical support
These are two of my favourite interfaces but the reality is, although the Audient mixer app is fantastic, the Apollo monitoring functionality is far superior. The ability to monitor through UAD plugins AND print these to your audio with zero latency is unbelievable.
Awesome review with great production values. The only thing missing is a test of the Apollo headphone output. Rumor has it that it’s too weak to drive 250 ohm headphones and above. I know the Audient can deliver in that department (both via USB3 or the old generation w/ external power supply), but the Apollo Solo/Twin headphone output seems almost like a taboo topic with very few online discussions and no real consensus. I’d hate unboxing a premium interface only to find it barely audible in my BD DT-880 250 ohms, especially knowing the Audient can handle it.
My comparison of the headphone outputs is at 8:26 in the video. There's very little difference and both can handle high impedance headphones well, although you will need most, if not all of the output. The Apollo headphone is not affected by thunderbolt power transfer because it is mains power supplied, so there's no need to do that test.
@@EdThorne its not wrong it just sounds funny to me😁. Im from Croatia and we dont speak English here so I dont hear english version of my name that much often. Dont worry about it ❤️😁.
i've heard that the Audient ID14mkii doesn't work on OS Big Sur.... is that true? i have a macbook pro M1 and i would love to purchase the device, it would be a pity not being to do it because of software incompatibility
I think that’s the point, Apollo Twin only cost more because of DSP and Functionalities + it’s an Apple device lol, so you know how that go but sound quality is about the same
Had an apollo but purchased an id44 later. I prefer the warmness that the mic pres add. That is confirmed in the 100x loop test here which would never represent real world situations. As well, I wouldn't ever describe it as signal degradation as the Audient pres are well known to add warm color which is something some people look for on a recording. I found the uad sterile without adding a unison pre. Uad is a money sink when adding proprietary plugs so i jumped ship. All in all, they are both great though. The comparison here is a little misleading. You can't really compare pricing as outlined as you will be spending much more on the uad for plugins to fill out its capabilities. The audient is a basic soundcard without the added expense. Great video. I did bounce back and forth between 15:50 and 16:30 and there really isn't that much a difference in sound between the 100 pass tests. To me at least. The audient really is a lot of bang for the buck.
You don’t need one with either. iD interface have 10dB of digital gain available on each channel in the iD mixer App. Some UA Unison preamps have up to 72dB of gain. Plenty.
Absolutely. The 103 is a condenser mic which typically has a high output and the iD14mkii has 58dB of preamp input gain which is loads for a condenser. Plus, there’s an additional 10dB of digital gain available on each channel in the iD Mixer App. That’s a great recording combination 👌🔥
@@EdThorne Ed you're a star. love the quick response also! Also another question: Shall I use this combo on FL Studio or Logic? (Soley for Recording rap and singing Vocals, mixing and mastering to an already made beat, and would prefer to stick to the stock plugins on both DAWS). Which one you reckon?
@@TeionZ I’ve been using Logic for 15 years, and I haven’t used FL Studio so I can’t really comment fairly but Logic is considered up there with ProTools and used in professional studios for many good reasons. See if you can get a demo of both and see which feels best. Logic probably has an instrument sample library larger than all the other DAWs put together too, it’s immense!
I could perceive the depth of the Apollo on the bass guitar test- more depth than the Audient, maybe not a deal breaker but if you listen close enough, you might hear- or rather, feel it.
Yeah, and the bus processed drums had much much clearer high end with the Apollo. You could really hear the hi hat come alive, as the audient sounded a bit more dead and sterile in the hi Department. Imo.
Does the Apollo sound three times as good? Does that improvement get lost in the crappy playback of earbuds, cellphone speakers, etc? Most folks are listening on systems that are barely "good enough", which from a budget/practicality point of view indicates an interface which is more than good enough is plenty. I think the iD14 & iD24 Mk II models are the obvious no-brainer choices at their price points, and punch well above the "good enough" weight. Put the money you don't spend in room treatment, get the sound ID reference software yourself, upgrade your headphones, get a used FMR Audio RNC and start integrating some analog gear, I hate waves but the Nx Ocean Way Nashville & Abbey Road studio emulations are brilliant. All of that will have a much more profound impact on the quality of your music than the choice of a $300 or $1,000 interface.
Honestly the only way I could see myself going up from my Audient ID14MKII would be to go to an Appolo system - but that's not something I can justify until music is my day job and not my night job
I’m looking to upgrade my FR Solo for my live-streaming piano on twitch. I am overwhelmed and have thought about at least six interfaces but can’t make a decision. Looking for something wit midi, at least 2 inputs preferable more, sterling sound with good headroom that doesn’t clip. Hopefully this video might help me out. Watching now.
The UA Volt might be of interest. Or if you need a LoopBack feature for streaming, check out the Evo by Audient - don't be fooled by it's price - it is one of the best performing interfaces!

Hey Ed. I've been comparing an Apollo Twin X Thunderbolt with an Apogee Symphony Desktop. As clean as the Apogee is, I actually quite like the slightly more open sound of the Apollo vs the somewhat 'squashed' sound of the Apogee (almost like a dynamic mic sound-at least to my ear). Plus have had the issue with the Symphony where sometimes when I unplug, and come back after a time, it fails to be read by my Mac and I have to restart the interface. However, my question is whether you know anything about the audible slight popping when increasing or decreasing the gain on the Apollo... seems to track exactly with each level up, and crucially it gets recorded! I searched a bit and see others have had this exact issue, with no solution. Sometimes I need to ride my gain while recording, so this becomes a problem. Wonder if you had any thoughts...? Cheers.
Hi Matthew. I know exactly what you mean about the squashed feeling of the Apogee interfaces. Re the gain popping, just out of interest, why are you changing the gain mid-performance? And, are you using a Unison preamp when this is happening?

No. Only the ad/da chips can affect that.

Go by how many inputs/outputs you need over price.
@@EdThorne sure thing 😊

Can U tell me where i can hear the complete Track od the Backgroundmusic?

I'm glad you mentioned the phase shift on the x100 Audient. It made me wince.
This was 50 (or 100 passes, I can’t remember).
its great, man!
The converter comparison test has me a little confused. Is it like holding a mirror up to a mirror to see the reflectivity quality? 🤔
The point is to amplify the effects of the signal degradation caused by the components. It’s an non-real life test but highlights the subtle difference in conversion and preamp influence.
@@EdThorne Makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Your efforts are appreciated! 😀👍

(I use a Dell XPS 15 9560 PC laptop which has Thunderbolt connectivity, by the way.)
Thank you for any help mate!😅😆
The MkI required the power supply to use phantom power. The MKII is fully buss powered.
@EdThorne Oh, brilliant! Thanks for answering mate, I appreciate it 👍 🙏
This is such a great review! Loving the Audient !
Thanks maaaate! The audient is awesome. So good for the money.
Thanks for the great video. I interested about not id14 , id44 Audient and the original cables interfaces is 2.0 ...its better to buy other cable USB C-A 3.2 for a great quality ? Headphones Monitoring ? ( I used Beyeardynamic 700 pro X).. Its Amazing why originaly cable not a 3.2
Just ordered the MKii yesterday (:
Nice. You won’t be disappointed.
Would you consider reviewing the Sound Devices MixPre 3 II?
Thank you very much for the video, I will buy the Audient iD14. I will only work with mixing and mastering and recording vocals and guitar. I'm starting now and I think it will suit me very well according to your video.

Great vid! Thanks a lot man!
You are very welcome, thanks for watching :-)
What do you think about Antelope. They also have onboard plugins i believe. Thanks for the excellent video.

Great information here, thank you!
You’re welcome. I’m glad it was helpful 🙂
Almost a $600 difference for a Similar sound ! I’ll go with the Audient !!!
I'd say save up $1000 more and go for the apollo. It's more of an eco system than just an audio interface.
ahh but if you're a vocalist you'd be missing out on the most amazing feedback of your life. real time autotuning and mixing is heavenly
The Apollo is much better. Don't be fooled
I don’t use plugins . I use external for everything . I just believe the real deal sounds better than plug ins for my opinion. So I rather go for the Audient
The specs on the chart are wrong
Mic input dyn range:
- Apollo = 118 db
- audient =113 db
Mic input Noise
- Apollo = - 127 db
- audient = - 129 db
With Apollo you basically pay the software and the DSP capabilities.. But there is not much difference in the Hardware compartment..
Thanks for the video, well done
Double check the labelling on the chart👌 (Also check which models you/I am referring to)
I noticed the same thing. Something wrong about those specs. Audient ID14 MK2: Mic input dynamic range is 113,1 dBu (J. Krause...), no 101 dBu as Ed said. But otherwise good info.

Thanks.
You couldn’t tell a difference in sound using your sennheiser 650? Would there be a difference if used an affordable dedicated Dac and amp?
When using Ableton Live 11, will the Apollo leverage the onboard DSPs for processing Ableton virtual instruments and plugins or are the DSPs only limited to processing UAD plugins? Thank you.
Audient iD14mkii vs sll 2+ wich one I should buy?
Personally I’d go for the Audient because the monitoring is better. But arguably the SSL comes with nicer plugins…
ID14MKII is Industry recommended.
Thanks!
Yeh I tried a USB-2.0 and 3.1 cable and there is a power supply difference which affects the amps (only slightly but it was audible).
@@EdThorne But a usb 3.1 cable into a USB 2.0 interface you mean? Is this cable included or you bought it separately? I assume they include two usb2.0 cables (one type A and one type C) thanks!

You shouldn't need a DI box with an interface - that's what the interface is for.
Wow the loop playback was very surprising.
It's only for UAD plugins

Do your prefer the mk2 interface instead ok x version of the Apollo interface
These are two of my favourite interfaces but the reality is, although the Audient mixer app is fantastic, the Apollo monitoring functionality is far superior. The ability to monitor through UAD plugins AND print these to your audio with zero latency is unbelievable.
Can you compare with usb pre 2 and why the price is too high ?
I can drive my 300 ohm HD650's

It works fine on Big Sur and M1. Software too 🙂
I didn't perceive a huge sound quality difference between these two contenders. Either one will do the job.
Absolutely ! would certainly prefer id 14 mk2..a bang for the buck..
Audient iD14 with Cloud lifter or Apollo Twin without cloud lifter? (Asking suggestion for my SM7B)
You don’t need one with either. iD interface have 10dB of digital gain available on each channel in the iD mixer App. Some UA Unison preamps have up to 72dB of gain. Plenty.
Hey! Can the AUDIENT iD14 mkii be sufficient enough to power the NEUMAN 103 at an optimal level?
Absolutely. The 103 is a condenser mic which typically has a high output and the iD14mkii has 58dB of preamp input gain which is loads for a condenser. Plus, there’s an additional 10dB of digital gain available on each channel in the iD Mixer App. That’s a great recording combination 👌🔥

Also another question:
Shall I use this combo on FL Studio or Logic? (Soley for Recording rap and singing Vocals, mixing and mastering to an already made beat, and would prefer to stick to the stock plugins on both DAWS).

Should I sell my Audient iD14 Mark ONE for the Mark Two?
Nah, I wouldn’t bother.
Buy one more. It is not Ferari.
