    I just opened up my studio for booking at my current office space where I usually just make beats. I've experienced latency with my scarlett 2i2 3rd gen and some static/vnyl noise coming out on vocals. I am still on a budget as I am currently spending $ on bills and other products. Im not really focusing on sessions with bands where I need so many input connections. The Mic I'm currently using is a Warm wa87. Is there a Audio Interface you recommend to use for now to upgrade from my Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen if the Apollo Twin is out the picture?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 года назад

      Hi Luis,
      The static/vinyl noise could be preamp saturation if you have the input signal too hot. It's always worth checking the mic cable too. A noticeable upgrade on the Scarlett preamps and definitely converters is the Clarett. The pres sound great, arguably better than the Apollo's, as you can hear here: ruclips.net/video/IkuuxFvNB_g/видео.html And it's priced pretty much in between the Scarlett and the Apollo Twins.

      @@EdThorne Thanks Ed, I have an extensive experience in these things having been senior engineer at Roland UK and working at Yamaha and Alesis UK (I also modify DAC circuitry nowadays). I feel that as a marketing ploy the M2 is made to enhance the low end at the expense of he high (this is very easily done by changing capacitor and resistor values after the DAC. I feel that the Audient may well be cleaner and more true to the original signal. I don't see the point in adding colouration to the input like the Volt and SSLs do (way better to do this with Software which can be undone later in the DAW).

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 года назад +2

      @@EdThorne That's weird, I've watched hours of comparisons from different channels and I don't perceive that. Unfortunately I was locked out of the UK due to travel restrictions early in 2021 and now live in Brazil, we don't yet have a fully working Amazon where you can buy multiple interfaces and return free of charge; here, you only ever get 3 months guarantee even on new products, and once they are in your possession it is hard to return and get your money back. I trust your opinions over those in other channels, so I will be keenly awaiting your views on the M2 before pulling the trigger on the ID14 mkii.

    • @joeylo
      @joeylo 8 месяцев назад

      I just switched to the ID14 from the Motu. Loved the M2 BUT I noticed…the higher I put up the headphone volume…the more distortion/degradation I got on my inputs. It’s very very subtle, but it’s happening nonetheless. At first I thought it could just be my unit but after sifting reddit/the internet I saw I wasn’t the only person with this problem. Like I said it is hardly noticeable…something you need to be listening hard and “testing” for but regardless, I don’t want it to be there.

      Tough one, they all have different strengths. I think Clarett is the best in terms of preamps and converters, plus it’s ADAT expandable. The iD14 is competitive because of the price and ID monitor app. The Solo has Console, which is by the far the best monitor processing app on the market. So it depends what you need.

    I'm in the market for an audio interface I used to have an ID14 the original version and the A-D conversion was truly excellent but the D-A conversion was just good. I tested it out alongside my Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 100 and the Cambridge Audio sounded clearer than the ID14 DAC. I don't have the ID14 anymore I sold it a a couple of years ago and my Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 100 is finally on it's last legs. The audio keeps cutting out and I have to turn it off and turn it back on, i've had it about 8 years so it's lasted well. But my biggest dilemma at the moment is, is the ID14mkII D-A converter as good as the Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 100, but that is a question no-one can seem to answer as no-one has both of them.

    I have the SSL2+. I did not like it for a couple of reasons. The buttons for 48+, Line and Hi z are super wobbly and give false contact, as soon as you pose your finger on the 48+ button, it activates or deactivates, same with the line button where it makes some noise if you play with the buttons a little to the sides, the construction of the ssl2+ it's just not the best. You just sold me the Audient. I wanted to ask you, The ssl has this gray knob for controlling the volume but it makes you decide on to what to hear the most, the Daw or the mic, does the audient hace the same? Or can you control the daw volume and input volume independently? I would really appreciate if you answered, i have not heard any of that on any video that ive seen so far!

Assuming that most of people (specially pop, electronic, rap/trap) will work at 44.100/24bit or 48.000/24bit, around 256 buffer size, "producing/mixing on the flow". What are the best options of audio interfaces in terms of RTL (round trip latency) Aiming for less than 10ms on those values? Or even, Do I need an interface? Cuz I saw the benchmarks and all audio interfaces will deliver around 12 to 14ms in 44.100/24bit and 256 buffer size. Eh, been there, done that; got the M4 when it came out of the Covid shadow a few months ago. I love doing vocals with stereo track backing. So I thought, well, I can connect my cell phone or tablet out via a split 1/4" cable to the Line inputs of the M4. NO GO. Those Line Level inputs can only take inputs from Line Level outs like from mixers. I thought, duh, I already have a mixer with USB (Mackie ProFX6V3); why the heck do I need the MOTU M4 then? So I regretfully returned it to Sweetwater. Fast forward a few months, and I just got the Audient EVO 8 from Sweetwater. To my delight, I can use two of the 4 Combo inputs to connect my cell phone! I just run the Auto Gain for those two lines. Oh, I can push the buttons on Lines 3 and 4 and make a stereo input! Hot dog! Then I plug in a microphone and I'm good to got. And even better, I can save all the settings on the EVO software mixer as a preset, so easy to bring up the next time I decide to record a vocal.
      Just one thing: I have to turn the Mic Preamp volume all the way to the max to get a decent mic volume with the EVO 8. But what is SO STRANGE, is that on my DAW (Cakewalk), I add a Reverb Plug-In, then turn "Echo" on, and wow, I almost fell off my chair! The Mic sensitivity went up 300%, and I could even hear the creaking of my chair! Seriously I have to sit still so my chair won't creak while recording! Unreal; no idea why this happens but hey, no complaints, I'm delighted! Though, I must say, the Mic Pre-Amps on my ProFX6V3 are much more sensitive.

The M4 is the perfect unit for me in this price range.i suppose I could use my phone with my outboard pres but I literally can't ever see myself doing that! Thanks Erand. The reason I don’t bother with latency timings is because I use these interfaces with direct monitoring, through which there is no latency. I do think this was tested on USB 3.1, not Thunderbolt 3, which makes latency problems virtually inexistent. If you're concerned about latency for such powerful VSTs as Serum, than you should definitely invest in a computer with Thunderbolt 3 if you haven't already! I just want to know this,...Can this iD14mkii allow me to utilize an EQ for my mic? I want this strictly for my Voice Over work and nothing else and all I want is to be able to EQ the mic through the interface to get the sound I want BEFORE I start recording. Basically I'm asking is there at least one simple plugin that comes with this device that allows for voice EQ?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  Год назад

      No. This interface does not have the required DSP to process the audio before it hits the converters. For this you will need an Apollo Twin or Neumann MT48 interface (these are the ones I recommend).

    • @EdThorne

      It’s got a Thunderbolt 3 connection (same as USB-C). Thunderbolt 1&2 are the square shaped connectors.

    • @rumar4u
      @rumar4u 3 года назад +1

      Just so you know, the only benefit from using Thunderbolt would be more data = meaning more channels. With USB 2.0 you could still have 32 channels In/Out @ 192Khz. In terms of speed it depends on the controller of the PC and the Interface.

    I'm no expert by any means, but it seems like he is downplaying the weaknesses and up-playing the strengths, i.e., it distorts, but it doesn't matter, and the headphones required almost full power, yet somehow doesn't distort? IDK.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  Год назад

      The outputs on all interfaces distort at a deafening level - ie, it doesn’t matter because you won’t be mixing anywhere near that level. And The headphone amp requires almost full power with high impedance headphones which need more power to drive them, as most do. With low impedance headphones, again, the output can distort but at a level way higher than you would practically need. This is common on all interfaces.
